We want to take you on an adventure in this issue. Spring is here, and it's time to step outside. Who is ready to explore Cullman with us? Cullman is often described as a small town, but it is actually a rapidly growing city with a small town feel. It has so much to offer - from restaurants, fashionable clothing boutiques and stores to an award-winning parks and recreation department and numerous festivals that bring crowds from around the Southeast and beyond. Col. John G. Cullmann of Frankweiler (then Bavaria), Germany, arrived in America in 1866 and shortly thereafter began to explore the South. According to the City of Cullman, "Cullmann then went back north and began to advertise for colonists. In April of 1873, the first five families came by train to the spot where Cullman now stands. Each was allotted a plot of ground. The colony quickly grew, with American citizens and German immigrants moving to the area. In the middle of 1874, an election was held to incorporate the town. With thirty votes cast, there were twenty-three for incorporation and seven against. It was also decided that the town would be called 'Cullman' after its founder, but with only one 'n.'” Cullman has a rich German history, and we want to encourage you to go out and explore. Lake season is beginning, and with it, all manner of watersports. A popular one on Lewis Smith Lake is, of course, boating. It’s a fun way to spend a spring or summer day, getting out on the water with family and friends. To make the most of your 2023 lake season, however, you need to know how you and your loved ones can enjoy Smith Lake and all it has to offer responsibly. Lake League Real Estate on Saturday, April 29, from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., will host a boaters’ safety event at Trident Marina. Whether you’re an experienced boater or just starting out, this event is perfect for anyone 12 and older who wants to learn more about safe boating practices and the unique features of Smith Lake.

Not licensed? No problem! Attendees who do not have boating licenses will even have a chance to receive one on the same day as the event. But even if you already have your license, there will still be plenty to learn about the rules on the lake and how to protect the lake’s special species. The event will be led by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's Marine Patrol (AMP) Division, whose mission is to enhance safety and promote responsible use of resources on Alabama's waterways through enforcement, education and community activities. Marine Patrol troopers will share their knowledge and expertise with attendees. You’ll learn everything from safe boating practices to the importance of conservation efforts in our community. This will be an excellent opportunity to ask questions and get hands-on experience. The AMP supports the National Safe Boating Council’s Safe Boating Campaign, which emphasizes the importance of life jackets. “Recreational boating and water activities are enjoyed by millions of Americans each year. Boating safety advocates recommend all boaters and passengers not only have a life jacket, but wear it at all times while boating. Regardless of your age or experience level, the data shows that life jackets save lives.”

April is a glorious time in Alabama, and one of the biggest reasons is the opening of the area's many farm stands and farmers' markets. For those of us who don't have gardens (and even those of us who do!), these stands and markets are the perfect places to pick up fresh vegetables, delicious fruits and a variety of homemade breads and jams. The Festhalle Farmers Market in Cullman will open Saturday, April 1, and will be open every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday through October from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. The Festhalle is located at 209 First Ave. NE, Cullman, and can be found on Facebook at facebook.com/cullmanfarmersmarket. A little later, the Berlin Farmers' Market will open Saturday, May 13, and be open Saturdays through Oct. 28 from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. The Berlin Farmers' Market is located at 50 Mt. One of my most favorite times was when my family lived on Smith Lake. There is so much history and so many stories about Smith Lake. You are part of a community, whether you realize it or not. You are all neighbors regardless of which part of the lake you live on and whether you are a full-time or parttime resident. Smith Lake has more than 500 miles of shoreline and is considered to have some of the cleanest and deepest water in the United States. We have this beautiful huge water playground in our very own backyards, so why not explore it? Let us help you plan your Smith Lake trip. My son loved to explore our shoreline. He climbed the rocks, looked for worms and spotted the various types of fish. We loved our boat rides! Smith Lake provides the most beautiful, scenic boat rides imaginable. We found a cool and creative “Smith Lake Summer Bucket List” for all ages on the Smith Lake Alabama Instagram page. I highly recommend using this fun guide on your boat rides. Smith Lake Alabama is a great resource for all the things Smith Lake. Check it out @smithlakealabama. Also check out "Smith Lake A to Z," a fun book you will want to buy for your little one. A few top finds for our family on the lake include the “castle," not only because of its size, but also its beautiful design. It is definitely not something you see every day. This 5,500-squarefoot lakefront beauty was built in the early 1980s. A quick Google search will give you an inside look at the exquisite home design and decor.

One of my personal favorite spots is Indian Head Rock. Our lake home was just a few sloughs over. To jump from this 30-foot rock is just one of the many rights of passage on Smith Lake. Jumping from the spot is fun but watching others jump while you watch from your boat is just as much fun. Big Bridge on County Road 222 (the road that takes you to Trident Marina) is home to some popular artwork. Kurt-NCathy, Back Flips Rule and the Dragon are just a few of all things to see on the bridge. We love the history of Kurt-N-Cathy; it is a tale that will live on forever. Do you know the story? While you are floating under Big Bridge, be sure to stop by The Grille at Trident Marina for a delicious treat and drink. Be sure to check out the beautiful boats in the new showroom. During the summer months, their free lakeside Summer Concert Series is a must! If you want to explore Smith Lake by boat, but don't own one, Trident Marina has pontoon boat rentals, with 24/7 gas for all boaters and boat servicing and maintenance. Smith Lake Park is also another spot to check out, with an RV park, community swimming pool, public lake access, puttputt golf, tent camping and paddle board and canoe rentals. The park also has cabins and pavilions available for rent. While at Smith Lake Park, check out Smith Lake Zip Line Adventures! Explore Smith Lake from the tree tops! There are many amazing adventures to be had on Smith Lake. We hope you go out and explore, wave at your fellow boaters, grab a popsicle from the Popsicle Princess and tell them we said hi! Be sure to pack your sunscreen!

Lewis Smith Lake was created in 1961 by the Alabama Power Company as a result of the company’s construction of Lewis Smith Dam to produce hydroelectric power and improve river traffic conditions on the Sipsey fork of the Black Warrior River and provide recreational opportunities. Construction of Smith Dam began on Nov. 25, 1957. The $29 million project was formally dedicated on May 23, 1961, and named for Alabama Power Company president Lewis M. Smith. The lake is known for its deep, clear water and its good sport fishing. In recent years, it has served as the site of several major professional bass fishing tournaments. Largemouth, striped, white and spotted bass; black and white crappie; bluegill, longear and redear sunfish; and flathead and channel catfish may be found in the lake. Source: Alabama Power Company

THROUGH HER LENS ‘Make sure you really have passion for what you want to do’

More than 10 years ago, Jennifer Murphree made a purchase that unlocked her life’s passion. “I purchased a camera with some money I received as gifts for my high school graduation,” she said. “I took some pictures and some of my family said that I had a real talent, and that inspired me to start my business.” Murphree launched Jen Jen Photography in 2012. Today, she travels around north Alabama and all over Cullman County for her clients, capturing everything from portraits to community events to athletic competitions. She also has an incredible eye for nature. Her favorite parts of her job, according to Murphree, are “showing people how I see the world through my lens and seeing people smile.” Her advice for young people embarking on careers in photography or any other creative field is simple, but so important: “Make sure you really have passion for what you want to do.” Check out Murphree’s work at Facebook.com/ only1jenjenphotography.

Hurricane Creek Park, 22600 U.S. Highway 31 N, Vinemont, cullmanrecreation.org Hiking | Walking | Picnics "The large park, located just off Highway 31 in South Vinemont, is nestled in a 500-foot-deep canyon in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains called Hurricane Creek Gorge. Visitors can spend the day trekking or bird watching along the 4 miles of designated hiking trails that wind through the lush woods, unique rock formations and cliff sides of the gorge. Notable locations in the park that were formed by the weathering of natural rock include Twilight Tunnel, the Stairway to Heaven and Dead Man’s Squeeze. Speaking of rock formations, rock climbing is another widely popular activity in the park. Climbers will find ample opportunities to scale the park’s dozens of climbing faces. "There are also picnic tables in an open area near the main creek for those who packed a lunch or simply wish to take a break. Pets are allowed to accompany visitors but must be kept on a leash. No rangers are on site, so visitors are advised to exercise caution while utilizing the facility. "The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset, and admission is free." “After building a home to sell on Smith Lake a few years ago, I fell in love with designing and contracting,” said Georgia Myrex, owner of Smith Lake Greenscapes and Exterior Design. “I channeled my passion for outdoors and gardening and took a chance on this landscape/hardscape company. Some days, I am amazed that I make a living doing this; not a single day feels like ‘work.’” Myrex says landscaping gives a home character. “I’ve always looked at landscaping around your home like wearing makeup and styling your hair. You can have a beautiful home on a gorgeous lot, but without

some sort of landscaping, it just looks incomplete. A simple landscape with some foliage gives your home or business so much more vibrance and personality. It allows you to display character and style before even entering the door.”

generally ‘warm’ climate, we are fortunate to have a wide variety of trees to choose from. One of my favorites is the Magnolia, a Southern staple as well as an evergreen providing year-round color. I tend to lean toward evergreens, so my other go-to would be Arborvitae trees. Arborvitaes are great to use as privacy hedges or simply to incorporate color in a garden that has no evergreens and would otherwise look ‘dead’ in winter.” Above all, said Myrex, homeowners should consider how much time they want to spend on maintenance. “If you enjoy pruning, watering and fertilizing, select more flowering plants and possibly some annuals. Relay For Life of Cullman County's Party at the Park

ST. BERN ARD | 9:00 AM Saturday and Sunday, April 22-23, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on the campus of St. Bernard Abbey and Prep School. More than 150 booths will be filled with artists demonstrating and exhibiting their handcrafted works. Admission is $10; children 5 and younger get in free. Special reduced admission rates to the Ave Maria Grotto all weekend.
