Warm mugs of coffee, heaping bowls of soups and the sounds of the fireplace crackling - we are in full swing of fall and I am embracing every moment. I love a warm cup of tea on the front porch with a throw blanket draped across my lap in the afternoon. My dogs snoozing at my feet as I sit in my rocking chair watching the leaves blow across the lawn. A flickering candle and a great book while I lie under a flannel blanket. It is the little things like this that I am most thankful for. During this month of Thanksgiving, what are you thankful for? This month brings with it my most favorite holiday - Thanksgiving. I love gathering with our families for delicious food everyone has prepared. Turkey, ham, homemade dressing with a recipe that has been passed down to me, potatoes, greens, macaroni and cheese and delectable desserts. Thanksgiving is so much more than the food though. For me, it is about seeing those we love we may not get a chance to see very often. The feeling of happiness when catching up and laughing with your loved ones - friends and family. We want our Thankful Issue to bring you that same feeling of happiness as you read the stories that fill the pages. We asked some of our favorite local business owners what they are thankful for this year. Are you in need of a Thanksgiving recipe? Trident Marina will once again welcome Santa Claus for a special holiday charity event. Christmas at Smith Lake will take place Sunday, Dec. 3, from 2-6 p.m. “David Bunn is going to be Santa Claus again this year,” said Trident Marina Owner Jeff Tolbert, with a mischievous twinkle in his eye. “Santa will arrive by boat at 2:30. Kids can get their photos made with him while they share their Christmas wishes.” The event is set to be a real celebration, with a hot chocolate bar, bouncy house, kids’ hayride, rock ‘n roll bingo, ugly

Attendees are asked to bring new children’s coats to donate to Sacred Heart. The holidays will soon be upon us, and many of us are already preparing our homes and businesses to welcome family and visitors alike. One way to make things merry and bright is decorative outdoor lighting, and it’s not too soon to get started! You can do it yourself, sure, but if you lack the necessary tools, want help realizing your vision or just want to spend your time on other holiday prep, why not consider hiring a professional to do it for you? One local company to consider is Alabama Outdoor Lighting, a locally owned business that has specialized in Christmas and holiday lighting, event lighting, landscape lighting and outdoor audio since 2004. Owned by Nick and Kelley Payne, Alabama Outdoor Lighting has a team of professional installers who will take care of everything for you. They offer an all-inclusive service that includes installation of custom cut LED lights, maintenance and take-down in January. Kelley Payne said the holidays are the busiest time of the year. “October through December is our busiest time of the year with the excitement of the holidays,” she said. “Gutter lines are definitely the biggest request we get when it comes to Christmas lights. We also offer ground lighting, tree wraps, wreaths and garland. Creating a magical scene that leaves the clients and their family in awe is our passion!” She said the most extensive job the company has taken on involved a large customer display that took more than a month to install. The company has even been called twice to participate in the ABC reality

TV show “The Great Christmas Light Fight.” “We were at Johnny's Bar-B-Q one night and Nick's phone rang. The screen said Burbank, California, so we assumed it was a solicitor and sent it to voicemail. To our surprise, there was a voicemail from ABC asking Nick to participate on the show,” Payne said. Alabama Outdoor Lighting does a lot of fun jobs and displays, but Payne said one of the best parts of the season is the work the team does for free. In fact, the company currently donates its Christmas lighting services to 12 different homes, and this year met with the Pilot Club of Cullman and added the nonprofit’s Pilot Light Home to that list. Nick and Kelley Payne make a habit of giving back to the Cullman community. They are United Way of Cullman County Silver Feather Society giving society members, and Kelley Payne also serves on the board of Restoring Women Outreach. “We also host our clients with their family and friends in December with private Christmas light shows. In 2022, we had the pleasure of hosting over 800 people!” she smiled. Of course, the company’s professional services aren’t limited to Christmas lights. Alabama Outdoor Lighting works with home and business owners all year round to improve curb appeal. “We offer functional and decorative lighting that can set the stage for cozy gatherings in cool evenings around the fireplace or colored lights for entertaining around the pool on summer nights,” said Payne. “Outdoor illumination enhances safety and security while adding value to your home. Sullivan Creek Ranch in the north Cullman County community of Vinemont is a truly unique place, and it is currently expanding to offer even more to visitors. “We are pretty excited about the changes happening here on the ranch. We opened our Trading Post fall of 2021 and could not have been more thrilled with the outpouring of support and encouragement from this area,” said Emily Anderson, who owns Sullivan Creek Ranch with her husband Greg Anderson. “We are known for our outstanding Akaushi beef, Cattle and Canvas Art Studio and our small rustic outdoor event venue.” However, according to Anderson, becoming an overnight destination is the next phase in the business. “We want to give people the opportunity to come and experience the ranch the way we do,” she said. “In addition to the rooms, we plan to host ‘dinner club’ nights where anyone can make a reservation and come enjoy a superb meal featuring our Akaushi beef cooked to perfection in an intriguing outdoor setting.” The sweeping, scenic ranch is an autumn lover’s dream. “Fall around here is everything our spirits crave in autumn,” said Anderson. “It is wide open views of colorful trees changing colors. In the mornings, it's having a warm cup of coffee in your hands, sitting on a porch feeling the way the crisp fall air makes us want to take a deep breath and settle in. During the day it is walking on one of the nature trails around the property. It's cooking your meals over an open fire pit, cowboy style, that transitions into the perfect gathering place to sit and talk into the night sipping warm drinks and cocktails, telling stories, while the glow of the crackling fire keeps everyone close. Fall is when the Sullivan Creek Ranch is at its best.” Since the ranch is undergoing remodeling, the Andersons don’t have fall or winter activities planned for this year, but, said Anderson, “We will begin hosting more small exclusive dinners and events early next year.” She said the ranch does plan to be open for overnight experiences later this year. “Although we do not have holiday plans for this year, due to the remodeling,” she said, “we do have dates still available for others to plan their holiday gatherings here.” Sullivan Creek Ranch is located at 151 County Road 1047 in Vinemont. Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table. Candlesticks, vases, little pumpkins and gourds, or fall decor you have on hand can make a great centerpiece. Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.

The Traditional Table For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display.

The Fall Garden Party Table Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky.

The French Country Table Rustic yet elegant, this tablescape combines the love of traditional, vintage and natural elements with an updated twist. Autumn Salad Autumn Salad

THE PERFECT THANKSGIVING SIDE DISH

The recipe is perfect for Thanksgiving: cozy and inviting!

Dressing: • • • • • •

1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 1/4 cup olive oil 1 tsp. Dijon mustard 1 clove garlic, minced 2 tsp. honey Salt, pepper

Salad: • 8 oz. fresh kale, stems removed, torn into bite-sized pieces • 5 tbsp. olive oil, divided • 8 oz. Brussels sprouts, halved • Half of a butternut squash, cubed into bite-sized pieces • 1/4 cup dried cranberries • 1/4 cup pepitas • 8 oz. crumbled goat cheese

1. Combine ingredients for salad dressing with a whisk. Set aside. 2. Toss butternut squash with 2 tbsp. olive oil, salt and pepper. Spread in a single layer on baking pan. 3. On a separate banking pan, toss Brussels sprouts with 2 tbsp. olive oil, salt and pepper. Spread into a single layer. 4. Roast squash and Brussels sprouts at 375F for about 20-30 minutes. (Brussels may be done faster than squash.) 5. While roasting, massage remaining tablespoon of olive oil into kale leaves. 6. Top kale with butternut squash, Brussels sprouts, cranberries, goat cheese and pepitas. Drizzle dressing over top.
