If you're like me, you're already counting down the days to - what I believe is the best holiday of the year! You've already planned who's hosting, who's cooking what and bargaining with yourself about how many pieces of pie you'll have. Come on, you have to try them all! Calories don't count on Thanksgiving, right? For me, lots of things stay the same. No matter who hosts, there will always be my grandmother's (we called her Nanny) dressing. She's been gone for 14 years, but her cherished recipe is a constant. It's like a warm blanket of memories in every bite. There will be turkey, of course, but also ham, broccoli salad, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, green bean casserole, pumpkin pie and my specialty: deviled eggs. The tables may change with the years, but the menu remains the same, and it's a tradition that feels like home. As important as any of that, however, is the annual chance to sit down, think back over the last year and take mental stock of all of your blessings. What are you thankful for this year? Family? Health? A goal met? New job? New home? New loved one? An obstacle overcome? Whatever it is, I hope you'll take the time to really think about it. Then share it with the people you love. Thankfulness never goes out of style! I hope you enjoy this month's magazine, with a heartfelt thank-you for stopping by!

Thanksgiving dinners aren’t complete without special recipes shared with family or friends. Here are two easy recipes you can whip up to add some sparkle and kick to your event, shared and prepared by Ashlea Chance of Baileyton’s Mavens & Makers.

A P P L E C IDE R MIM O S A In a champagne flute, combine 2 parts apple cider to 1 part sparkling dry white wine or champagne. Garnish with frozen cranberries for a festive touch.

CHEESY JAL APENO CORN INGREDIENTS • 3 (11 oz.) cans white shoepeg corn, drained • 3 tbsp. chopped, pickled jalapenos, plus more for topping • 8 oz. cream cheese • 1/8 cup milk • 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350F. 2. In a saucepan over low heat, combine milk and cream cheese until smooth. 3. Add in corn and jalapenos. 4. Transfer to a buttered baking dish, top with shredded cheese and additional jalapenos. 5. Bake for 20 minutes until the casserole is bubbly and the cheese is golden brown.

Cullman native and Fairview High School alumnus Col. Don Fallin is a veteran on the move - literally. Fallin, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point who retired from the United States Army after a 30-year, decorated career in 2016, is spending his retirement supporting the children of fallen and disabled service members. Raising funds and awareness for the nonprofit Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund, Fallin has completed three adventurous treks so far. He hiked the 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail (solo!) in 2018, reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania with a small group in 2021 and late this summer, Fallin and another small group completed the 70-mile Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu in Peru. “We are in final stages planning the next fundraiser, summiting Mount Aconcagua in Argentina,” said Fallin. “It is 22,800 feet, the highest mountain in the world outside the Himalayas. That will be Jan 22-Feb. 10, 2023.”

To date, Fallin has raised more than $100,000 for education scholarships through the Fund. “I started out as a private in the Army and was fortunate to have had an amazing Army career, culminating as an Army Aviation special operations commander in Afghanistan. Growing up on a small farm, I am blessed to have had the opportunity to serve my country alongside its most precious resource, the men and women that volunteered to serve our country while at war. I have eight combat tours, with a combined total time of four years, six months in combat zones, which included infantry, aviation, airborne and special operations. I am blessed, and supporting the Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund is the way I can give back,” said Fallin. “I enlisted in the Army as a private to get the college fund so I could get the money to help go to school, so supporting a great cause that provides education scholarships to the children of our fallen heroes rings true to me.” Learn more about the Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund at johnnymac.org.

Southern Eats, a popular meals-to-go shop nestled in a historical building on the southeast side of downtown Cullman, specializes in homemade meals, sides and desserts year-round. It also has special offerings for Thanksgiving. “We are your one-stop shop for Thanksgiving,” said Owner Laci Schuman. “We offer all the delicious homemade side dish casseroles. If you’ve eaten it at a traditional Thanksgiving meal, more than likely it is on our Thanksgiving menu. We will have Johnny’s smoked turkey (whole and boneless breasts). Hams are also available for pre-order. And of course, our specialty Strawberry Pretzel Salad is the real star for the holidays!”

SCHUMAN STAYS PRETTY BUSY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, BUT IT REALLY PICKS UP IN THE FALL. “Back to school is when we start feeling ‘busy.’ Football season ticks up another level, and by October we are staring down the busiest two months of the year,” she said. “The holidays are great for Southern Eats and Southern Eats is GREAT for the holidays! We get very busy with everyday pickups, but the catering ramps up with office parties, friend/family get-togethers, easy hostess gifts, etc.”

ONE THING THAT KEEPS PEOPLE COMING BACK IS THE QUALITY OF THE FOOD. “We use quality ingredients in everything. Over the last couple of years, grocery costs have skyrocketed, but I refuse to save a little money by using a lesser quality product,” Schuman explained. “Obviously this has forced our pricing to go up, but our customers appreciate the quality and consistency.”

SCHUMAN AND A FRIEND STARTED THE BUSINESS EIGHT YEARS AGO. “We saw the need for better options for busy families. That Easter we rolled out a menu, took pre-orders and met for delivery in the church parking lot. Each week we filled orders and met for delivery, watching our customer base grow from friends to a list of customers who counted on us to feed their families,” she said. “In March 2015, we opened the storefront. In 2017, I bought out my partner and have steadily grown.” Schuman envisions expanding, saying, “I’m constantly listening to customers who travel to Cullman to make a pickup. There are several cities where I see Southern Eats being a great fit!”

WHAT IS SCHUMAN THANKFUL FOR THIS THANKSGIVING? “I have so much to be thankful for! I have a wonderful family who is supportive and involved. Justin and I have two beautiful daughters. Bailey, 19, a 2022 CHS graduate, is enrolled at The Salon Professional Academy and ready to begin her career in cosmetology. Logan, 15, is a CHS freshman living her best life as a student, cheerleader and dancer. Of all my blessings, these two bring me the most pride, and I cannot describe how thankful I am for them.” She continued, “I have the best, most loyal staff I am so lucky to work, laugh, scramble around, oh, and cook with! They are the backbone of Southern Eats. Without them I would miss so many moments with my girls. There aren’t words to describe how grateful I am for them. Some things we took for granted pre-pandemicevents, games, gatherings. I am thankful for fun and normal day-to-day life. Justin Dyar has a recognizable face, especially around Smith Lake. Dyar is in the midst of an astonishingly successful real estate career that keeps him busy, but even “Mr. Smith Lake” likes to take time to enjoy Thanksgiving with his family. Dyar and his family are very close, and they make family time a priority. “I have two nephews, 6 and 4, and my family is very close,” said Dyar. “My sister and her family live in Santa Rosa Beach. My parents live five minutes away from me at the lake. I am thankful I have my parents close to me. My Dad and I do some business together, real estatewise, and it is good to be able to work alongside my family. Also, we travel together. My family usually takes a couple trips a year. We just returned from the beach. We enjoyed the water and my nephews, my sister and her husband. What we will probably do for Thanksgiving is me, my mom and dad will go to Santa Rosa Beach, then my sister and her family will come up to the lake for Christmas. We will go there for Thanksgiving and they will come here to the lake for Christmas.” Dyar said his family keeps Thanksgiving traditional. “We like the traditional dressing, turkey. My grandmothers were both fabulous cooks. One was a home economics teacher and the other lived out in the country. They raised their food and vegetables. I was blessed to have grandmothers that were huge cooks. We were raised with good, true Southern food out of the garden. We like the traditional Thanksgiving meal with fresh vegetables. My parents were both very busy with work, and they did not have time to garden, but my grandparents did. My aunt still cooks like that. She still has that gift. I am thankful I was brought up like that and have those memories.”

Dyar has lived on Smith Lake for more than 20 years, and he has been visiting with friends and family since the 1980s. A broker with Lake Homes Realty (He sold more than $250 million in real estate along the lake last year!), he’s pretty much an expert on the area. So, what happens to the real estate market in the “off months”? “It slows a bit after Labor Day, but we are very consistent,” he said. “I talk to a lot of customers this time of year who will be listing their properties in the spring. I close a lot of land transactions in the fall.” As for what makes Smith Lake special, Dyar explained, “Most customers tell us the lake is affordable more than most lakes in the South. The water is crystal clear. You are between Birmingham, Huntsville. You are just over two hours from Nashville. Approximately 50% of my purchases and sales are from Brentwood, Franklin and Nashville. They love our lake and they love that it is like being in the country, but you are not far from I-65. They love Cullman.” What does Dyar want people to know about his business? “We are here for anything, not just real estate. I have people call every day for a contractor, electrician, plumber, landscaper, even if they run out of gas on the lake,” he said. “We are here to help and service the community. We want people to reach out and know we are available for anything they need. ‘What color shingles did you use?’ ‘Where did you find that stone on that house?’ or ‘Who built your fire pit?’ I am not just the guy on the billboard everyone sees. I want to be the source for not only real estate, but anything that our community needs.”

Colder months on Smith Lake It gets chilly in late fall/winter, but the lake is still enjoyable. Dyar said fire pits, heated pools, outdoor kitchens and TVs are popular for entertaining. “Boating season is usually through November where it is not too cold, and then the season gets rolling again in March.”

This year's event will take place Friday and Saturday, Nov. 18-19, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. The craft show benefits the Vinemont High School Marching Eagle Band.

Back for the first time since 2019, the annual Share Club of Cullman Christmas Tour of Homes will take place Sunday, Dec. 4, from 1-5 p.m. The 2022 tour will feature the homes of Jimmy Drake, Jimmy and Jackie Walker, Kurt and Megan Apel and BJ and Savannah Wood. Share Club of Cullman Fundraising Committee Chair T'aira Ugarkovich said the proceeds of the tour will benefit three nonprofits: Hospice of Cullman County, the Good Samaritan Health Clinic and Curt's Closet. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased from any Share Club member or at Cullman Cabinet, Three Pears or J. Drake Salon. Tickets will also be available the day of the tour at the featured homes. "We'd like to give a huge thank-you to the homeowners for their time, effort and money that they have put into this event," Ugarkovich said. "If it wasn’t for them, we would not be able to have this amazing event."

The Walker home, built in 1904, has numerous architectural details, a large front porch and its original front door.

The Apel home, completed this year, is nestled in a discreet cove on Smith Lake.

The Wood home, a modern farmhouse built in 2018 in a picturesque setting with graceful trees, has a sizable yard.

The Drake home was built in 1890 and recently extensively renovated.
