There is something so refreshing about starting a new year! The year ahead holds endless possibilities and a renewed sense of excitement. For students, good mental health has roots in self-confidence and a great place to start is making sure they have all the resources they need to thrive academically. For almost 40 years, Sylvan Learning has provided solid academic support for students and new owner Eric Lynn is excited to share how he is taking Sylvan’s resources to the next level of helping local students. For kids who love coding, Kenneth Peeples, co-owner of iCode of Augusta, shares about the variety of programs iCode offers to help students excel in STEM education and set them up for future success by providing multiple certification programs. A new chapter in healthcare access has arrived in Columbia County. Doctors Hospital has officially opened Doctors Hospital Evans Emergency, the county’s first freestanding emergency room — a modern, thoughtfully designed facility that brings high-quality, hospital-level care directly into the heart of Evans.

BUILDING STRONG MINDS THROUGH ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE I n 2027, Sylvan Learning of Augusta will celebrate forty years of assisting local students! Last summer, ownership of the center passed to Eric Lynn and this month, he shares what he loves about Sylvan’s programs and exciting new opportunities coming to CSRA families.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT SYLVAN’S PROGRAMS?

I love that all our tutors are state certified teachers and that we have very small student-to-teacher ratios, with a maximum of four students to one teacher. I also love that unlike tutoring often offered at schools that focus on what is currently being taught in the classroom, we can tutor on baseline skills like reading and math concepts. For example, if our initial skills test indicates a student is weak in certain subjects, we focus on the root causes of that weakness instead of constantly pushing them forward to new concepts like they do in school.

WHAT PROGRAMS DOES SYLVAN OFFER?

Our tutoring program primarily focuses on reading and math. The first thing a student does is take a comprehensive test to let us know where they are in different subjects in their grade level. Then we formulate a personalized tutoring plan based on those results. With our homework program, students bring their homework and the tutors are able to help them understand the concepts in their homework. Test prep helps students prepare for taking the SAT, ACT, and other tests. Students come for multiple one-hour sessions each week as well as having access to our online learning resources.

WHAT AGES DO YOU SERVE?

We assist students from kindergarten through high school, but most of our tutoring students generally range from first to eighth grade. We usually see high schoolers in our test prep programs.

HOW DO STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM SYLVAN’S PROGRAMS?

Students improve their baseline skills which helps across the board with school. They also develop important study skills. Students learn how to study on their own because instead of just telling them the answers, the tutor teaches them the skills to find answers so that they can replicate the process on their own. Students also grow in confidence. Some come to us ambivalent about school but after a few months of gaining skills and practical knowledge, especially in subjects where they were discouraged, it really increases their self-confidence.

IS THERE ANYTHING NEW AND EXCITING ON THE HORIZON FOR SYLVAN?

One of the biggest obstacles parents have getting their kids to tutoring multiple days a week is the drive to and from the center. So, although we still have our permanent location in Martinez off Columbia Road, we CONTINUED >

have satellite tutoring out of the Kroc Center downtown. Students will still need to come to our main location for assessments, but we hope this will be the first of several satellite tutoring locations.

WHAT OPPORTUNITIES DOES SYLVAN HAVE FOR HOMESCHOOLING FAMILIES?

We recently became a provider for the Georgia Promise Scholarship, which is a state funded scholarship for homeschool students in select school districts. Richmond County is one of those school districts. The scholarship provides homeschooling families in those school districts money for supplies, tutoring, and things like that. Sylvan Augusta is a provider of tutoring services through that program. We also offer middle of the day sessions specifically for homeschool families.

Our goal isn’t to keep the kids in tutoring forever, it’s really to catch them up to the rest of their peers and ensure they walk away with study skills that they’ll be able to use for the rest of their life. Casey McNutt of the new Fit & Well CSRA Fitness Studio in Evans has a passion for fun, well-rounded fitness. With a graduate degree in Biomechanics and Exercise Physiology from the University of North Texas and over thirty years of experience, her enthusiasm for human kinetics continually grows. “It is fascinating to me,” Casey shares. “I like angles and math, so science and math put together was perfect.” After years of working as a personal trainer and group fitness instructor for various studios, she was able to pinpoint what she loved most. “I love working out with people in groups. I like the energy,” Casey says. “But I also did personal training and it was so rewarding to see the progress so individually and deeply.” Casey found that the large groups she was leading were not ideal because of her love for focusing on the progress of individual clients. She switched her focus to nutrition coaching and started a virtual business that has enabled her to help people on a more personal level. “It is all about balance, exercise, being the best you, and not trying to fit into a box,” she states. However, though she enjoyed nutrition, her real passion was still fitness. Casey rented a space and started doing personal training classes and small group workouts again, quickly filling up her client book. “As it got bigger,” Casey says, “I realized I wanted to be in my own space where I could be in control of my programming.” She traded the rental space for her own small studio, Fit & Well CSRA, that opened October 2025. Casey’s new studio offers nutrition coaching, youth classes for ages nine to sixteen, small group classes, and personal training for all fitness levels. Additionally, Fit & Well is aligned with Truemed, so clients can use HSA/FHA funds at the studio. At Fit & Well, Casey loves helping people with their health goals and enjoys every step of the process. “I know how to keep people from plateauing by moving differently—reducing injury and increasing performance,” she says. “I love programming and

writing workouts. I love the science behind it and the research.” She keeps up with new research from high-quality sources to make sure she is delivering the best workouts to her clients. Continually seeing the impact on the people she serves keeps Casey motivated to provide clients with resources to stay healthy. “I have a reason to fight for people’s growth and changes,” she says. “I want people to know what they are doing when I’m programming in case they move or can’t come to the studio. I want them to have knowledge that will keep them safe and moving.” With the start of the New Year, Casey encourages readers that “there is no reason to have to start your life over every January because fitness becomes a lifestyle when you’re with the right people.” Fit & Well wants to provide that community to make health a lifestyle for you year after year.

Welcome Health of Evans is offering local businesses something many didn’t realize was possible in today’s healthcare landscape: a way to lower costs while also giving employees better, more accessible medical care. With insurance premiums rising year after year, companies often feel forced to choose between higher deductibles or higher monthly costs. Direct Primary Care (DPC), the model used by Welcome Health, creates a third option. One that benefits both employers and their teams. Welcome Health operates on a membership basis rather than billing insurance, which removes many of the financial barriers that keep people from going to the doctor. For individuals, this means longer appointments, same-day visits, messaging access, and significantly lower lab and medication costs. For businesses, it means fewer insurance claims. Something owner and provider Davis Mellick, PA-C, says is the key to sustainable savings. “The fewer claims you make, the less your insurance costs in the long run,” he explains. “DPC does a great job of cost containment.” Businesses with fifty or more employees often pair Direct Primary Care with a level-funded plan, self-funded plan, or partially level-funded plans. Rather than paying into a traditional plan where unused funds disappear at the end of the year, level funding allows businesses to roll remaining money into the next year or back into the company. “You get actual flexibility,” Davis says. “You can pay your employees more, offer bonuses, whatever your goals are. But this only works if claims stay low, and DPC makes that possible without compromising quality of care.”

That familiarity is rare these days.”

Davis says one of the most rewarding parts of the job is being part of a patient’s life over the years: seeing families grow, celebrating milestones, and watching health improve. STEM Programs Empower Growing Minds iCode Augusta offers amazing STEM achievement and certification opportunities for local students Kenneth and Clarisse Peeples both have backgrounds and work in STEM related fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). When they became parents, the couple wanted their children and other children in the community to have local access to fun, engaging programs that nurtured their love of technology and STEM. “We wanted to build something that could help kids learn a breadth and depth of technology,” explains Kenneth. “Whether it was in relation to drones, robotics, 3D printing, different coding languages, cyber security, or artificial intelligence, we wanted to make sure that kids here could have a deeper foundation in technology to match what other countries are already doing.” As they researched the best way to bring these programs to kids in the CSRA, they found iCode. “We looked at different franchises as well as building our own,” he says. “We like the curriculum that is proprietary with iCode because they do a great job with their national committee to keep it updated and progressing so that younger kids get exposed to more advanced concepts and technology earlier.” The couple opened iCode Augusta, which offers eleven achievement levels, also called technology belts, that begin at age four and run through high school. The belts start with

coding blocks, progress to STEM Junior, then go through high school with a focus on cyber security. Each belt takes about nine months to complete and includes one-month sprints along the way. Students gain valuable skills at every level. “For each of those belts or levels, there are specific outcomes and soft skills that they learn, along with the key concepts for technology,” he explains. “Whether it’s in a belt that is dealing with drones and AI or dealing with STEM Jr. and doing the VEX-123 robots, there are a lot of concepts that they get to learn.” In addition to normal technology belt classes, iCode offers special camps that help students learn in unique, fun ways. “We have holiday camps that are focused on AI, space camp using Minecraft, 3D Innovators, YouTube branding, and more,” says Kenneth. “The camps have a really good breadth and depth across all of the technology.”

Through camps and classes, kids master technological concepts as well as acquire soft skills that include communication, teamwork, creativity, critical thinking, and adaptability that easily translate into other areas of life. To help students keep track of their achievements, Kenneth has developed BadgePath Education, which can be accessed through a website or phone app. “With my background being in cybersecurity, I get certifications in cybersecurity as well as artificial intelligence that can be put on LinkedIn. These days, because AI is the first line of review for a resume, when companies are learning about the candidate, it’s only what they’ve put on their resume or what can be found on the Internet,” he says. “So, I take all these achievements the students have done, these badges they’ve earned, and I put them into BadgePath so that when the child turns 16, they can transfer their badges to LinkedIn and start working towards college and career goals.” Homeschoolers, schools, and parents can also mint their own achievement certificates. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. 1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”

Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.

2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”

Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”

Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.

4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”

Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.
