April in the CSRA is truly amazing

Every spring, the CSRA buzzes with activity and excitement in preparation to host thousands of people from all over the world. It’s a great opportunity for us to celebrate local legends and showcase our favorite things about the CSRAand our magazine is no exception!

As so many have golf on the mind this month, we’re highlighting Rocky Branch Golf Course and all that this hidden gem has to offer. We also talk with brothers Kipp and Zane Madison on the role golf plays in their lives as well as hearing how Kipp, a 2024 winner in the Drive, Chip, and Putt, feels about being the first local youth to win the title.

We are also thrilled to come alongside Sig Cox as the company celebrates 100 years of keeping residents and businesses in the CSRA just the right temperature. Owner Jeff Miller shares how they are celebrating the milestone and why he believes Sig Cox is such a trusted name.

As the oldest restaurant in Augusta, Luigi’s has played a vital role in shaping how locals and out-of-town visitors dine for over seventy years. Penelope BallasStewart, the fourth generation to own and operate Luigi’s, takes us on a walk down memory lane to revisit why the restaurant is beloved by so many.

In the CSRA, we love traditions like WifeSaver’s amazing peach ice cream sandwiches that make an appearance each spring, but we love new things too!

Susan Johnson gives us an exclusive peek into the 1790 Club, a membership-based restaurant in the heart of Evans Towne Center that opened just a few years ago.

As we wrap up, I also want to add a personal note to our feature on Tim Tebow, who recently visited the Share the Lifestyle podcast. I’ve had the opportunity to meet Tim a few times over the last year, and I’m always impressed with his generous nature and how he gives back to our area.

We have so much to be proud of as citizens of the CSRA and I’m excited for what the future holds!

UNVEILING THE 1790 CLUB

A hidden gem for connection and elegance

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHLOÉ GIANCOLA

For Susan Johnson, launching the 1790 Club wasn’t just a business venture, it was the realization of a long-held dream with her husband, Scott. “We envisioned a restaurant that truly connected people,” Susan recalls. “When we discovered the expansive patio on the top floor of the Meybohm

It’s about sparking deep conversations and a profound sense of belonging.

Building in Evans, it clicked. This was our canvas for something extraordinary.”

For the next year, the couple did research, collected ideas, and visited different restaurants. Named for Columbia County’s founding year, the 1790 Club embodies intimacy over scale. “It’s about sparking deep conversations and a profound sense of belonging,” Susan explains. “Being an invitation only club, we can focus on making every visit exceptional. One of the most enjoyable things about having the club is serving our members and their guests to create an unforgettable experience. Whether that’s through special events, business lunches, or the celebration of personal milestones, our staff strives to deliver personal touches.

Our goal is for every member to feel known, special, and leave fulfilled.”

Step inside and you’re enveloped in moody elegance: dim amber lights casting a modern glow over walls adorned with local artwork that whispers Columbia County’s storied past. The speakeasy-style wine lounge hums with quiet allure, while the crowning jewel—a sweeping patio—overlooks the beautiful Evans Towne Center Park and the Performing Arts Center.

Membership remains deliberately scarce: a recommendation from a current member is the key, followed by a vetting process from the membership committee. Openings are rare treasures, reserved for those who will elevate the circle.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS WITH SIG COX

OWNER JEFF MILLER SHARES ABOUT THE COMPANY’S LASTING SUCCESS THROUGH SERVICE, VALUE, AND CONSISTENCY

BY

After moving to Augusta with his wife, Suzi, in 1990, Jeff Miller spent the next three decades thriving in his career with Club Car and Ingersoll Rand. When Jeff began planning his next career move, he and Suzi turned their attention to local business opportunities. “We wanted a service business, something in the trades, and we wanted a business that had a good name and longevity to it but also had room for growth,” shares Jeff. “We were looking for a company that already provided quality service knowing we could continue to build on what they had done and expand opportunities in the future.”

It's humbling to be entering into our fifth year of owning the company and we have a responsibility to make sure Sig Cox survives for another hundred years.

Sig Cox Heating & Air Conditioning, which has been servicing the CSRA since 1926, was a perfect fit and the Millers took ownership of the company in 2022. Since then, Jeff has enjoyed the challenge of taking the business to the next level. “So many people knew the name Sig Cox but they didn’t know if we were a residential service company, a commercial service company, or a construction company. We’re actually all three of those,” explains Jeff. “We do as much residential as we do commercial and we have a large commercial construction unit as well.”

Sig Cox has an expansive service area, which includes locations in both Georgia and South Carolina, including Columbia and Beaufort. “We also own Beaufort Air Condition,” says Jeff. “It’s part of our business family and we have a pretty good presence down in the Beaufort area. People from here may have a house in the Beaufort area but not realize that we’re connected.” Having a business presence in Beaufort also allows the company to take on projects and jobs up and down the coast from Savannah to Charleston.

An enduring legacy of Sig Cox is that as the team works to install, repair, and maintain both residential and commercial heating and air conditioning units, they do it under the core values of providing excellent customer service, value, and consistency. “I’ve always felt that excellent customer service is something that can set your company apart from everybody else,” says Jeff. “I’m a consumer of goods and services and know how I want to be treated, so we really want to make sure that our customer service is second to none.”

"Augusta has given us so much and we want to say a big thank you to everyone."
Jeff Miller, Owner

Great customer service begins with ensuring that when customers call Sig Cox, they get a real person answering the phone every time. Employees monitor calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including Jeff who participates in the on-call rotation. That initial contact lays the foundation for intentional communication with customers  which includes letting them know when a technician is on the way, along with a photo and information about the technician.

The Sig Cox commitment to value and consistency shows through stable maintenance pricing over the years, not charging credit card fees, and assessing each system individually to deliver tailored solutions instead of one-size-fits-all services.

Sig Cox kicked off celebrating 100 years with a new anniversary logo and hundred-year marketing campaign. Other celebrations will include an opportunity for customers to share their stories through social media and engage

in a contest that will take them on adventures all around the CSRA. Sig Cox will also continue to give back to the community through partnerships with Habitat for Humanity and the Lennox company’s “Feel the Love” campaign, which selects a few local homeowners to receive a free heating and cooling unit through a nomination process.

“Augusta has given us so much and we want to say a big thank you to everyone,” shares Jeff. “It is humbling to be entering into our fifth year of owning the company and we have a responsibility to the Haney and Cox families, who we purchased it from, to make sure Sig Cox survives for another hundred years.”

To join Sig Cox Heating & Air Conditioning in celebrating 100 years and find out more about products and services, visit sigcox.com or call 706-7225304. Also follow Sig Cox Heating & Air Conditioning on social media for helpful information and announcements.

Growth Beyond the Green

The Madison brothers share about playing golf and the life lessons they have learned

At 15 and 13 years old, Kipp and Zane Madison are an unstoppable brother duo. The two have been playing golf from the moment they started to walk. Their parents, Earl and Lori, love golf, so it was a joy to share it with their sons.

Both boys started out with a set of plastic golf clubs. “Kipp would hit the balls around the house,” Lori says. “Then, when Zane came along, he also had plastic clubs. We would go out as a family to play together.” In addition to going out on the course together, Earl has been able to coach the boys—something that made an impact on Kipp. “My dad really helped me when I was little,” Kipp recalls. “He would be my coach and go out to the golf course with me.” Kipp also remembers all the times his mom would watch their lessons.

Kipp’s talent for golf became evident as he got older. “I started playing in tournaments when I was around five years old,” Kipp says. “I played in U.S. Kids tournaments and more recently competed in Drip Golf GA, PGA Jr., and AJGA tournaments.” Zane started competing when he was close to seven years old and, along with two others from Augusta, was the first from Augusta to make it to the Drive, Chip, and Putt finals in 2022. He is hoping to compete in the Drive, Chip, and Putt again in the next few years.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Zane especially enjoys the relationships he has built through golf. “I’ve met so many people through golf. It’s a great way to connect with friends,” he says. He also loves the opportunity to spend time with family. “I like spending time with Kipp and my dad on the golf course,” Zane says. “We get competitive, but not too competitive, so it’s always fun.”

For Kipp, his hopes for his golfing career include winning the Drive, Chip, and Putt again this year. His first win was in 2024, and he is the only youth from Augusta to ever win the competition. “It was very special to be from Augusta and win,” says Kipp. “Hopefully I can do it again this year.”

Along with improving his physical game, Kipp is improving his mental game and attitude on the course. “It’s so much more than going out there and hitting a ball,” he explains. “I only spend a few minutes swinging the golf club on the course but am out there four to five hours.”

Similarly, Zane’s focus is on improving not only his golfing— especially as he hopes to compete in the Drive, Chip, and Putt competition this year—but also grow in how he encourages others on the course. “After we finish a round, we give out

cards with a Bible verse on them to the people we’re playing with,” Zane explains. “We write a little note on it and give them a ball marker that has the Bible verse Romans 12:2 on it.” The boys are also hoping to use their sponsorship money to help other juniors get the equipment they need and encourage others through that.

Both brothers continue to grow and recognize the importance of a good attitude in golf and life. “I love the emotions and competition,” Kipp shares, “but at the end of the day, it’s a game and I’d rather have fun than get frustrated and ruin it. You can always improve your attitude and have more fun.” Their growth on and off the course is sure to continue for years to come.

A Family Legacy in the CSRA: The DeFoor Realty Standard

For the DeFoor family, real estate isn’t just a business—it’s a neighborly commitment.

As a family-owned and operated firm, DeFoor Realty has built its reputation on the belief that every client deserves the same care they would give their own family.

While the real estate market is constantly evolving, their foundation remains firm: deep roots, personal integrity, and an unmatched knowledge when it comes to land, lake property and residential property in the CSRA.

“We live where you live,” says John DeFoor. “Whether we’re helping a firsttime buyer find a starter home in Columbia County or assisting a family with a lake property, our goal is to treat every transaction with the personal touch that only a family business can provide.”

While DeFoor Realty is a top-tier choice for traditional residential sales,

they are also widely recognized as the region’s premier experts in specialized properties.

If you are searching for acreage, timberland, or that perfect retreat on the water, they are the “go-to” for land and lake real estate. Navigating lakefront permits and land topography requires a specific set of skills that the DeFoor team has honed over decades.

Their expertise doesn’t stop at the shoreline. “Residential real estate is the lifeblood of our company,” John shares. “We take immense pride in helping our neighbors navigate the suburban markets of the CSRA.”

By combining their specialized knowledge of the land with a top tier residential division, DeFoor Realty offers a comprehensive service that covers every acre of the region.

Iconic Sweet Treat

Spotlighting WifeSaver’s legendary peach ice cream sandwiches

For the fourth year, WifeSaver’s Furys Ferry location is serving its much-loved and in-demand peach ice cream sandwiches. Phillip Dukes, third generation family member to own and operate WifeSaver, pitched the idea of creating the sweet treats to his dad, Jamie, a few years ago. The response was even greater than he imagined.

“That first year, when we put the post out on Facebook, it blew up and went crazy,” shares Phil. “We set a date for when we were going to start selling them and that morning, we had people lined up out on the sidewalk.” Within a few weeks, the restaurant sold out of thousands of sandwiches. Each year since, the demand has continued to grow.

The combination of peach ice cream and vanilla sugar cookies is rooted in tradition and provides a flavor combination synonymous with Augusta. “We make the sugar cookies in-house and assemble them using the best peach ice cream we can find,” says Phil. “It’s a great combination. I enjoy them and my little girls love them even more!”

Fans will be excited to know that this year, the peach ice cream sandwiches will be available for more than just a few weeks this spring. “We will start selling them a few weeks before the tournament and will keep them all the way through the summer this year,” shares Phil.

In addition to getting the treats as singles, they have been requested as part of catering packages for events, parties, and weddings. “The big challenge is keeping them cold enough,” Phil explains. “For the wedding, we packed them in dry ice and that worked out well.”

We make the sugar cookies in-house and assemble them using the best peach ice cream we can find.
- Phillip Dukes

Many customers pair the ice cream sandwiches with other popular spring favorites. “Right around the beginning of April, if somebody’s coming in to get a peach ice cream sandwich, they’re likely picking up our pimento cheese and egg salad as well,” he says. “WifeSaver has a lot of great menu items that we’re known for and I’m glad to be able to contribute to that tradition with this recent addition.”

To enjoy a peach ice cream sandwich, or two or three, stop by WifeSaver’s Furys Ferry location at 1100 Furys Ferry Road in Evans. For more information on catering and other menu items, visit www.wifesaverrestaurants.com or call 706855-6870. Also follow WifeSaver Furys Ferry Road on Facebook.

CHASING THE PERFECT ROUND

PARNELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PETE MICHENFELDER & BRITTANY STERLING PHOTOGRAPHY

Just twenty minutes from Evans, golfers find a true treasure at Rocky Branch Golf Course. Located just across the county line in Lincoln County, Rocky Branch is celebrating its thirtieth year of welcoming players of all ages and experience levels to enjoy the challenges and rewards of the game of golf.

Al Holloway, co-owner and manager of Rocky Branch, recalls the conversation that changed his life and brought him to Rocky Branch. “In 1995, I was working at Hickory Knob State Park in the pro shop and was approached by a local couple, Bill and Sue Ashmore, who wanted to build a golf course,” shares Al. “They asked me to come and run it for them, and it was the greatest thing God could have ever done for me. Not only did Bill and Sue become like family to me, but I love what I do and I have made tremendous friends from the people who have come to play at Rocky Branch.”

In 2013, Al and a few other investors purchased Rocky Branch. Under their leadership, the club has continued to foster a love for golf in the community and provide a beautiful course for players to enjoy. The club offers both a monthly membership option and convenient walk-on play opportunities. As home to several organized golf groups as well as the Lincoln County and Harlem High School golf teams, the course provides a great atmosphere for youth and adults to hone their skills. “We have a men’s group that plays on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and a women’s group that plays on Wednesdays and Fridays,” shares Al. “The Dogfight group plays on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.”

EXPERIENCE A GREAT DAY ON THE LINKS AT ROCKY BRANCH GOLF COURSE

There are several features that make the course distinct, most notably are its rural setting and the course’s design.  “One thing that makes Rocky Branch unique is that it’s a very playable and enjoyable course,” says Al. “One side of the golf course is wide open with hardly any trees on it and on the backside, there are trees that outline each fairway. So the two play very differently, and that is a good thing.”

Golfers love the rural setting, easy flow, and compact design that make the course both enjoyable and challenging. Players tend to be big fans of the course’s 90-yard Par 3 on #14, but Al says that #10 is his favorite. “You can see everything from the tee, and it is just beautiful,” he shares. “It could be a hole at any professional tournament.”

According to Al, a round of golf at Rocky Branch usually takes between three and a half to four hours and with the exception of tournament week, tee time reservations are only required on weekends. The club offers a snack bar with light refreshments and pro shop that has a surprisingly large assortment of used golf clubs for sale. “Our members can bring clubs, and we will sell the clubs for them,” shares Al. “It has been much more popular than we thought it would be and we usually have a very nice selection.” Members and their families also have access to the club’s on-site pool, which turns an afternoon of golf into a family outing that is fun for everyone.

Al also points out that Rocky Branch keeps play rates reasonable all the time, even during tournament week. “During the week, seniors play for $35 and non-seniors play for $40. Everyone plays for $45 on the weekends. We also keep our course fees at $45 per round Monday through Sunday of tournament week,” says Al. “Most courses increase their fees that time of the year, but we want to keep it reasonable and welcoming for both local and out of town players. But definitely call for a tee time because we do get pretty busy that week.”

If there is one thing Al would love for people to know about Rocky Branch, it is that a great round of golf is closer than they think. “Most people hear Lincolnton, and they think we are so far away,” he says. “In reality, we are only 25 miles from Riverwood and it’s an easy drive with no stoplights between there and here. You cross of the county line and here we are.”

Rocky Branch Golf Course is located at 4711 Double Branches Road in Lincolnton. For more information and to take a peek at the course, visit rockybranchgolf.com. To schedule a tee time or join one of the groups who play the course each week, call 706-359-4303.

LUIGI'S: AN AUGUSTA ICON

REFLECTING ON THE RESTAURANT’S HISTORY WITH PENELOPE BALLAS-STEWART, THE FOURTH GENERATION TO OWN AND OPERATE LUIGI’S

As the fourth generation family member to own and operate Luigi’s, Penelope Ballas-Stewart has a life-long connection to the restaurant and its legacy. Penelope’s great-grandfather Nick Ballas, an immigrant from Greece, originally settled in Massachusetts but eventually found his way to Augusta. Once settled, friends encouraged him to buy a local restaurant and in 1949, Nick opened Luigi’s in downtown Augusta. “Downtown was very vibrant during that time,” shares Penelope. “It was the center of everything.”

Our goal is to continue serving Augusta for another 70-plus years and to stay in this building where there is so much history.

Although his Greek roots ran deep, Nick opened Luigi’s as an Italian restaurant and over the years, the family introduced Greek food, making the menu Mediterranean-focused. “It was very difficult in that time to market Greek food, and it was very hard to get lamb and the spices here,” explains Penelope. “Even Italian food was somewhat unknown down here. We introduced pizza to Augusta. People would order it as a dessert because it was listed as pizza pie on the menu. So, they would order it and be surprised when another meal came out.”

Luigi’s, known for its Greek chicken, lasagna, and pizzas, welcomes guests with Old World ambiance, family-style hospitality, and personal touches that speak to the heritage of the family who has poured so much love into one of the oldest buildings in Augusta. Diners enjoy the reminiscent and soothing voices of 1940’s classics like Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. In addition to welcoming thousands of guests each year, the restaurant has also seen its share of famous faces, including Elvis and numerous golf legends.

Growing up around the restaurant and surrounded by family provided fun times and great memories for Penelope. “The restaurant is so much a part of who I am. I remember being a child, when my grandparents owned the restaurant, and my sisters and I would sit crammed in a booth with our cousins and Papou (that’s grandfather in Greek) would bring us a bowl of spaghetti and we would all sit and eat our bowl of spaghetti together,” she shares. “Now the youngest of our family who aren’t old enough to work sit at the family table and eat together.”

Later, when Penelope’s parents ran the restaurant, she remembers her grandparents and other family staying involved and being close by.  “Once my grandparents retired, my grandfather would come out of retirement every year for tournament week and he would sit outside and be the host for the week,” she says. “I would get to work with him that week and those are memories I think about every year.”

As the fourth generation at the helm, Penelope now shepherds the fifth generation as they begin to take a more active role in the restaurant. She hopes they will feel the same connection to the family’s legacy as she does and will carry on that legacy for years to come.

“We are so thankful for the support of those who come downtown to dine with us,” she says.

“Our goal is to continue serving Augusta for another 70-plus years and to stay in this building where there is so much history.”

Stop in and experience Luigi’s at 590 Broad Street in downtown Augusta. For more information, visit luigisinc.com and follow Luigi’s Augusta on Instagram and Facebook. Reservations are encouraged for parties of five or more. To make a reservation, email reservations@luigisaugusta.com or call 706-722-4056.

Redefining MVP: TIM TEBOW’S LIFE BEYOND FOOTBALL

An exclusive Q&A with City Lifestyle

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

From championship trophies to global humanitarian impact, Tim Tebow’s journey has defied every standard playbook. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Tebow pulls back the curtain on the moments that truly defined him, from a humbling middle school church retreat to the life-altering shift of fatherhood. This isn’t just a look back at a career; it’s an invitation into the heart of a man driven by purpose. Read the highlights below, then join us for the full, unfiltered experience by scanning the QR code at the end.

Q: WE ALL KNOW YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD, BUT TELL US ABOUT THE CURL CONTEST.

A: I was competing for my future high school team (my brother’s team), and I pushed myself way past what was smart. I ended up collapsing and needing medical attention. But what stayed with me wasn’t the pain, it was the lesson. Would I be willing to do something that others aren’t? For much of my life, I strived to bring my best for a game, but I hope that I can say at the end of my life I was willing to do that for things that actually matter.

Q: YOU’VE ACHIEVED SO MUCH IN SPORTS. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT NOW?

A: Becoming a dad. Nothing compares. From the moment I knew my wife was pregnant, I felt a new depth of love for our child, but when you bring your baby home, the responsibility hits you like nothing else. Suddenly, everything you see, every decision you make, you’re asking, “Is this corner too sharp? What happens if she reaches that drawer?” It changes how you see the world and how you see other people.

Q: YOU’VE SPOKEN OPENLY ABOUT DISAPPOINTMENT, ESPECIALLY AROUND FOOTBALL. HOW DID THAT SEASON OF LIFE SHAPE YOU?

A: I talked a lot about that very thing in my book Shaken . We all go through moments where our faith in our abilities and purpose feels rattled, but I believe it’s often in those storms when God can show us who we could become.

Q: YOU TALK A LOT ABOUT COMPARISON CULTURE. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE COMPARISON HAS BECOME SUCH A TRAP TODAY?

A: Because we’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel. Social media shows people’s “best day,” often filtered and staged, and then we measure our reality against that. There’s a reason filters are so popular—it’s not real. We end up scrolling through images that don’t tell the full story, and without realizing it, comparison starts to steal our joy and our gratitude.

“We’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel... comparison starts to steal our joy.”

Q: YOUR FOUNDATION FOCUSES ON THE “MOST VULNERABLE.” WHERE DID THAT CALLING BEGIN?

A: When I was 15, I met a boy in the Philippines who was treated as a throwaway because he was born with physical differences. That moment changed me. I realized God was calling me to pursue a different kind of MVP, not “Most Valuable Player,” but “Most Vulnerable People.”

Q: FINALLY, WHAT’S ONE THING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

A: I have some weird coffee habits, which include protein powder, collagen, and cream all mixed together. I love golf dates with my wife. And every night, I bring snacks to bed to share with our dogs. It brings me more joy than it probably should.

This conversation barely scratches the surface. Tim goes deeper into the moments that rattled him, the joys of fatherhood, and one story he has never shared publicly until now. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on Share the Lifestyle Podcast.
