February – the month of LOVE! We’ve been accustomed to believe this distinction is dedicated to a significant other. I can get on board with that because I love my wife, Jennifer, and enjoy honoring that. However, that is just scratching the surface of types of love. What about familial love? The feelings I have for my sons go beyond what words can describe. As I contemplated this issue, I began to list the various forms of love, beyond the love for a partner and family. Love of community and your neighbors. Love of country. Love of your pets. Love of friends. Love of a good meal, a great vacation, a movie, a perfect sunset or sunrise, a song that brings back memories, a big old belly laugh, or even loving a quiet relaxing evening by yourself. I recently attended a Crystal Lake Chamber event where I spoke to someone who is involved with one of the many non-profit organizations in McHenry County. From this person, I learned how many non-profits were in our community and the number astounded me. In my head, I started to calculate the number of people who work for these various organizations and quickly determined that there are literally hundreds of people in our county that have a direct impact on our community. Giving your time and energy to provide support to others is selfless love. We, at Crystal Lake City Lifestyle, want you to know that we recognize and honor all of you who help our neighbors who are struggling or need a little extra support. Community is what this magazine is all about. This month we focus on “Love Local.” What do you love about the people, places and things in our community? Take a little time and spread the love this February…and every day.

DIRECTIONS 1. In shaker with ice, combine gin, lemon juice and mixed berry simple syrup. 2. Using a strainer, pour mixture into champagne flute. 3. Top with champagne. 4. DIRECTIONS 1. In shaker with ice, combine bourbon and mixed berry simple syrup. 2. Shake well. 3. In a rocks glass, place large ice cube and splash with 3 dashes of orange bitters. 4. Pour bourbon mixture, using a strainer, over ice. 5. Garnish with a Luxardo cherry and orange rind. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Mia Latimer turned her love of dogs into a thriving business. Together, the mother-daughter team opened their second daycare and boarding facility dedicated to dogs under 50 pounds. Co-owner, Wee Little Paws Growing up with pets and working part time jobs at doggie daycares, Mia learned she had a strong connection with animals. She feels drawn to furry friends, sometimes, she admits, more powerfully than the pull toward her human counterparts. As a preteen, Mia watched her mom turn a vision into a reality. Marie, while in college, had created a marketing thesis about owning a small dog boarding and daycare facility. Nearly 20 years later, in 2010, Marie brought to life Wee Little Paws - Deerpark. It was then Mia first dreamed of becoming a part of the business. Graduating from Iowa State, during the pandemic, with a degree in industrial engineering, Mia was hired at Motorola but always had Wee Little Paws on her mind. Before long, she and Marie were in serious talks about a second location that Mia would design and manage. Not long after, she left her desk job and Wee Little Paws - Crystal Lake was born. More like a sanctuary than a kennel, it is clean and cozy with colorful, whimsical walls and white picket fences rather than cages. Walking through the entire facility you’ll notice the attention to detail and feel the genuine love Mia has poured into this special homeaway-from-home just for small pooches.

From eluding an arranged marriage to traveling across the globe on a self-exploration trip, nothing about Deepa Williams’ life has been conventional. Then came a fateful Summer trip to New Orleans, a flight delay and a stranger-turned-matchmaker. The rest, as they say, is history. AN ARRANGED MARRIAGE? In India arranged marriages are commonplace. Loving parents, such as Deepa’s, set their sights on finding a spouse for their child. For someone like Deepa, independent, resilient and determined, parents (or anyone else for that matter) selecting her life partner was not something she would settle for. But, telling her parents her feelings about that was what she struggled with and avoided as best she could. After graduating dental residency in 2014 she knew it was time to figure out the next steps in her life which did not include marrying a man her parents chose for her. Try as they may, she was able to dodge and divert and find excuses for why each of the suitors wasn’t actually suitable for her. CONTINUED >

HOW DID THINGS CHANGE? After living in Goa, India, and experiencing diverse cultural backgrounds, Deepa developed a strong desire to travel out of her home country. She was called to the US to explore…and maybe take a hiatus from dating (and eschewing) the men her father was bringing to her doorstep. It took some delicate conversations with her parents but they soon agreed and helped find her accommodations in New York City. So began a 20-day solo adventure of learning the language nuances, cultural differences and navigating the transportation system. Standing in the middle of Times Square, a dream come true, Deepa knew relocation was in her future. So, after some time working at a dental practice back in Goa, she packed her bags, moved to the States, and several years later, earned her dental degree from UCLA. It was her openness to new experiences that guided her on her path to find purpose in a whole new world. Next stop, love?

LOVE AT FIRST…FLIGHT? A trip to New Orleans proved to be more than just a Summer break. Destiny intervened through a flight delay, a shared meal with a handsome stranger on a Dungeons and Dragons excursion, and an observant woman who noticed the sparks and encouraged the pair to exchange numbers before heading their separate ways. The “stranger” was Spencer, a Texan living in California, just a couple hours from Deepa. And neither could stop thinking about the other. Soon, the two embarked on a love affair that turned into a marriage in 2021 (blessed by her father who finally gave up on the arranged marriage idea) with THREE wedding celebrations - San Diego, Austin, and Delhi, India. FROM INDIA TO MCHENRY COUNTY? Career opportunities brought the couple to Illinois and after several moves, landed them in Crystal Lake. The couple from vastly different cultures found each other in an unexpected place and together, created a home right here in McHenry County. Deepa purchased her growing dental practice in McHenry in November, 2022. Now, Deepa and Spencer will continue their journey side by side, supporting each other along the way. A reminder that love can’t be planned, it often happens when you least expect it.

Valentine’s Day, celebrated on February 14th each year, is a day dedicated to love, affection, and the expression of heartfelt emotions. While the modern-day celebration often involves the exchange of cards, flowers, chocolates, and gifts, the origins of Valentine’s Day are rooted in a rich history that spans centuries. Let’s take a journey through time to explore the often captivating and sometimes elusive history of Valentine’s Day.

ANCIENT ROMAN BEGINNINGS:

The origins of Valentine’s Day can be traced back to ancient Rome, where the festival of Lupercalia was celebrated in mid-February. This pagan festival honored the Roman god Lupercus, God of fertility and protector of shepherds and their flocks. This festival included rituals to ensure health and fertility. As Christianity began to spread, the church sought to Christianize pagan festivals, and Lupercalia eventually gave way to the celebration of St. Valentine’s Day.

THE MYSTERY OF ST. VALENTINE:

The true identity of St. Valentine remains shrouded in mystery, as there were multiple Christian martyrs named Valentine in the early days of the church. One popular legend suggests that St. Valentine was a priest in Rome during the rule of Emperor Claudius II. The emperor, believing that single men made better soldiers, outlawed marriage for young men. Defying this decree, St. Valentine continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. Eventually, he was discovered, arrested, and executed on February 14th. Another legend speaks of St. Valentine’s kindness and compassion. While imprisoned, he reportedly healed the jailer’s blind daughter. On the day of his execution, he left her a note signed “from your Valentine,” thus inspiring the tradition of sending messages of love on Valentine’s Day.

CHAUCER AND THE ROMANTIC CONNECTION:

While St. Valentine’s Day was associated with love and romance, it wasn’t until the Middle Ages that the connection between the day and romantic love became more prominent. The 14th century English poet Geoffrey Chaucer played a crucial role in romanticizing Valentine’s Day with his poem “Parliament of Fowls,” which linked Valentine’s Day with the mating season of birds. While birds may seem like an unlikely animal to inspire romance, Chaucer’s poem is one of the first known references to tie romantic love with Valentine’s Day. By the 17th century, exchanging tokens of affection, such as love notes and small gifts, became a common practice among lovers on Valentine’s Day. The first known written Valentine’s cards appeared in the 18th century, these cards were handmade decorated pieces of paper, however as their popularity grew steadily throughout the following centuries and technology advanced, these cards became mass produced and readily available.

COMMERCIALIZATION AND MODERN CELEBRATIONS:

The 19th century witnessed the mass production of Valentine’s Day cards, and the celebration became increasingly commercialized. The introduction of the postage system in the mid-19th century further fueled the exchange of Valentine’s greetings. Today, Valentine’s Day is a global celebration of love and affection, marked by the exchange of cards, flowers, chocolates, and romantic gestures. It has evolved beyond its religious and historical roots to become a day dedicated to expressing love in all its forms. While Valentine’s Day has come a long way from its ancient Roman origins and the mysterious tales of St. Valentine, it is a day that is still rooted in love. It has transformed into a celebration that goes beyond borders and cultures, celebrated in many countries around the world. As we exchange tokens of affection on February 14th, we should pause and reflect on the rich history that has shaped this day into the romantic and cherished celebration we know today.

That rich history is also right here in our local community. As we delve into the enchanting history of

Valentine’s Day, it becomes even more captivating when we explore how this celebration of love has evolved in our own community. In McHenry County, Valentine’s Day celebrations are as old as the towns we call home and offer a unique glimpse into the enduring tradition of expressing affection and devotion. The love celebrated is not limited to that of romantic couples, there is love shared between parents and children, friends, coworkers and fellow citizens. Just look at the examples found in local newspapers. There are references to St. Valentine’s Day going as far back as the founding days of our local cities and towns. One example is from the Woodstock Sentinel on February 11, 1863, the article recognizes the “buffoonery” of the CONTINUED >

tradition and reminds locals that “Dr. Stone has lots of [valentines] for sale.” Another reference made on February 16, 1928, in The Herald discusses a group of district 47 teachers who threw a Valentine’s Day party for their fellow teachers of district 155. The paper mentions how the “hall was elaborately decorated” and how “bunco and bridge furnished the entertainment for the evening.” One article appears in The Herald on February 20, 1908, and discusses a party thrown by a prominent Crystal Lake family, the Hales. The party was deemed quite the successful event as the article read, “Never in the social history of Crystal Lake has there been a prettier or more elaborate observance of St. Valentine’s Day.” The Hale house still stands on Walkup today and one only has to look at the reverent abode to imagine

With articles ranging from recipes to dinners, potlucks to dances, and advertisements for candies and cards, it is clear that Valentine’s Day has been celebrated many ways by past locals. Celebrating Valentine’s Day is not simply a hallmark holiday as it has come to be recognized, but a day rooted in tradition, an ageless celebration, a chosen day to acknowledge our love and affection for those we cherish. Although some locations have changed over the years, the traditions remain the same. Take a moment this month to acknowledge the people in your life who bring you joy. Whether it’s the teachers at your child’s school, your coworker who makes sure you have fresh coffee in the morning, your best friend, or your partner in life, February 14th is the day dedicated to celebrating that affection.
