LIFESTYLE LETTER

Fill Your Cup

January 2026 PUBLISHER

As we step into a brand-new year, I’m reminded of a truth we often acknowledge but rarely prioritize: you cannot pour from an empty cup. In the rush of daily responsibilities, family, career, community, and the constant demands of a fast-moving world, it’s easy to overlook our own needs. Yet our personal, professional, and financial success all flow from the same source: our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. January offers us a fresh start, a natural invitation to pause, reset, and intentionally care for ourselves. True wellness is not just about gym memberships or green smoothies (though those help!). It is the holistic alignment of mind, body, and spirit. It is carving out space to breathe, think, and reconnect. It is strengthening our bodies so we feel good in our daily lives. It is protecting our peace and nurturing relationships with the people we love most. Just as we tune in to our personal health, it is also time to check in on our digital health. Technology is evolving at lightning speed, and with the rise of AI-driven scams and increasingly sophisticated online fraud, staying informed and vigilant is no longer optional. It is essential. Updating passwords, enabling multifactor authentication, and having honest conversations with loved ones about digital safety are all part of modern wellness. When our technology is secure, our families, finances, and peace of mind are protected. This month’s issue celebrates the full spectrum of health and wellness because thriving in today’s world means tending to every part of who we are. You will meet local experts, businesses, and neighbors who are dedicated to helping our community feel stronger, live safely, and welcome the new year with renewed energy. As you read through these pages, I hope you are inspired to give yourself the gift of restoration. Schedule that checkup, take that walk, unplug for an afternoon, treat yourself with grace, and remember that caring for yourself is not selfish. It is foundational. When your cup is full, you show up better for your family, your work, and your community. Here’s to a year of health, clarity, strength, and intentional living. May 2026 be your most rejuvenating year yet. With Gratitude,

Nonprofit of the Month: PediPlace Closing the Healthcare Gap for Children Who Need It the Most For 30 years, PediPlace has been a local solution to a national concern. Recognizing that accessing quality, affordable, primary care pediatric healthcare services challenges thousands of families in North Texas, PediPlace, a local nonprofit pediatric practice, provides a medical home to uninsured children and those who receive Medicaid or the CHIP benefits ages birth to 18. Nationally certified as a patient-centered medical home, PediPlace provides annual well-child checkups, same-day sick-visits, management of chronic care, and mental health services. Texas; a primary clinic centrally located in Lewisville and two satellite facilities at area schools in partnership with the Lewisville and Denton Independent School Districts. Larry Robins, PediPlace CEO states: “These additional facilities expand healthcare access for our patients and enhance the educational environment by helping to keep kids healthy.” In fact, Robins says, “PediPlace’s use of age-appropriate books for its youngest patients are a diagnostic tool in the clinic, and a learning enhancement as well. How Somatic Movement and Dance Movement Therapy Support Whole-Person Well-Being I didn’t just discover somatic movement in a dance studio. I found it years into performing, during a period when stress felt louder than my own thoughts. As someone who grew up expressing myself through performing, I understood movement as art, yet I had never understood movement as communication. Of course, your body is the most accessible and useful tool that you have. That realization eventually led me into the study of somatic and dance/movement therapy, and today I am an emerging dance scientist completing my Bachelor of Science in Dance Science at Elon University. Through my work, I have seen how profoundly the body can speak when we learn how to listen. Somatic movement and dance movement therapy (DMT) are not about learning choreography or performing. They are about reconnecting to the body as a source of clarity and emotional regulation—something everyone can benefit from, regardless of age, background, fitness level, or experience.

WHAT IS SOMATIC MOVEMENT AND DMT?

Somatic simply means “of the body.” Somatic movement focuses on noticing physical sensations like breath, tension, posture, and rhythm to move with awareness rather than expectation. Think of it as a connection between your mind, body, and spirit. Dance/movement therapy is a form of clinical psychopathology that uses movement to support emotional, cognitive, physical, and social integration. In DMT, movement becomes a therapeutic tool much like a language. People often express through the body what they cannot yet express through words.

16

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | ARTS + CU LT U RE

THE SCIENCE, SIMPLIFIED

The body and mind are not separate. Movement directly influences the nervous system, helping regulate stress responses, reduce cortisol, and create a sense of grounding. When we move, we activate neural pathways that link emotional centers of the brain with areas responsible for logic, decision-making, and self-awareness. This is often called integration, and it is essential for emotional well-being. Somatic practices also help interrupt the body’s tendency to store stress physically through tightness in the chest, shallow breathing, or tension in the shoulders. Research shows that intentional, sensory-based movement supports greater resilience, clearer thinking, and improved mood. When your body feels regulated, your mind can follow.

WHO BENEFITS? (HINT: EVERYONE)

One of the biggest misconceptions about somatic movement or DMT is that it’s “just for dancers” or is performative. In reality, there is no right or wrong, no scoring and no judgement. If you can breathe, shift your weight, or way side to side, you can participate. These practices support: • Stress, anxiety, and burnout in adults and professionals • Trauma survivors, helping rebuild a sense of safety • Individuals with Parkinson’s disease, where research shows improved mobility and emotional regulation • Cancer patients, supporting both physical and psychological recovery • Children, using movement as a form of play therapy Movement is universal. It belongs to everyone.

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE DAY-TO-DAY

Somatic movement can be incredibly simple. A somatic stretch might involve slowing down long enough to notice where you’re tense, then gently releasing that area through breath and micro-movements. A mindful walk might mean feeling your feet connect with the ground, observing the way your arms naturally swing, or noticing the temperature of the air on your skin. Even swaying side to side, rocking forward and back, or placing a hand on the chest to feel your breath can shift your nervous system into a more regulated state. These small movements become daily rituals or micro-interventions that bring you back to your body when your mind feels loud.

FINDING SUPPORT

If you’re interested in exploring DMT, the American Dance Therapy Association provides a directory of board-certified dance/movement therapists across the country. Somatic movement educators can also be found in wellness centers, studios, and therapeutic spaces. In my own work, I offer private and group somatic movement sessions rooted in science-backed principles, and I share these practices through The Art of Coping, a nonprofit that supports children and teens in healing from trauma. My mission is simple: to make movement feel accessible, grounded, and transformative for every body.

More Than a Path Through the Woods, Northshore Trail Connects Neighbors, Fosters Health, and Encourages Locals to Thrive Outdoors

Nature Meets Neighborhood Woven between the tree line and the scenic shores of Lake Grapevine, Northshore Trail stands as one of North Texas’s most beloved outdoor escapes. For Flower Mound residents, it’s practically in their backyard. Just steps away from the vibrant mixed-use community of Lakeside Village, the trail offers an unparalleled blend of convenience, natural beauty, and adventure in the heart of Dallas–Fort Worth.

Many of the local businesses in Lakeside Village, including Cadence Cyclery and Trailhead Running Supply Co., curate activities catering to the visitors who come to the trails each week. For his part, Drew and his team host Sunday runs, affectionately called Dirt Church, where 30 to 40 people come out to run or hike together. For many in Flower Mound, the trail represents something rare in today’s fast-paced world: an opportunity to stop, unplug, and connect to nature. Whether it’s checking in with yourself on a sunrise jog or boosting your metabolism with meaningful friends, Northshore Trail provides a chance to explore the possibilities. CONTINUED >

Stretching roughly 22 miles round trip between Rockledge Park in Grapevine and Twin Coves Park in Flower Mound, Northshore Trail is celebrated for its versatility. Hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers alike share its winding dirt paths, shaded forest sections, and beautiful lake lookouts. The trail’s mix of elevations allows enjoyers to choose their own adventure, making it equally ideal for both a weekend workout and a peaceful morning walk. Originally carved out in the 1990s through a partnership between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and local volunteers, the trail has grown into a community cornerstone. People come from across the Metroplex to burn calories and build friendships. Drew Flowers, manager of Trailhead Running Supply Co. in The Shops at Lakeside Village, knows this to be true. When discussing the idea to open a trail-focused run specialty shop with his partner (and Lakeside Village resident) Darren Beck in 2020, he knew he needed to be close to a great trail, and Northshore proved a natural choice. “It is truly one of the best trails in DFW,” said Drew. “The moment you step onto Northshore, it feels like you’ve escaped the city by hours.” JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . A new year naturally inspires a return to healthy habits, better routines, and a desire to feel our best. For many people, an overlooked part of that journey is also one of the most transformative: a healthier smile. At Gronberg/ Sugay Orthodontics in Highland Village, building beautifully aligned smiles along with confidence has been the heart of the practice for more than 17 years. As a child, Dr. Kimberly Gronberg dealt with the common difficulties associated with misaligned teeth and braces, but her attentive orthodontist made the transformation process unique and much easier to bear. Touched by her doctor’s consideration and inspired by her own changes in confidence, she thought that perhaps one day she would pursue dentistry. Years later, Dr. Gronberg graduated from the Baylor College of Dentistry, a widely known top orthodontic program. She then pursued opening a place of her own where patients felt cared for, known, and supported— just like she did. In 2008, she opened the doors to her own practice. Throughout the years, Dr. Gronberg’s vision has stayed consistent, with much of the office staff staying the same and committing to the comprehensive care of their patients. A major part of the practice’s recent evolution has been the addition of Dr. Charlene Sugay, who trained in the same orthodontic program and shares an aligned treatment philosophy based in care and compassion. After six years as an associate, she and Dr. Gronberg became partners. Together, the two team up to treat patients with a rare form of consistency. “She’s incredibly smart and thoughtful,” Dr. Gronberg said. “Honestly, the control freak in me said at one point that I would never want a partner, until I met her. She’s definitely the right person.” Their collaborative approach is possible largely because the practice remains privately owned and

devoted to a single location. In a world where corporate dental offices are increasingly common, Gronberg/ Sugay Orthodontics is committed to personal connection. When patients call, they speak directly to the same team. When parents have questions, they have immediate access to the doctors who know their family. As the health-focused mindset of a new year takes hold, the doctors emphasize the powerful ways orthodontic care supports overall wellness. For children, early screenings around the age of seven can reveal bite or airway related issues that are easiest to correct during growth. A simple panoramic X-ray can make a big difference in ensuring a child’s health. “You don't think about your orthodontist being the one to diagnose airway issues,” said Dr. Gronberg, “but we are kind of the frontline because we can see how the palate is forming.” Taking early action in these cases can prevent more complex treatment later and avoid disruptions in growth and cognitive development. For children, teens, and adults, advancements in orthodontic technology have opened the door to discreet, effective care. Clear aligners have made significant strides and include newer systems able to handle complex cases, allowing adults to pursue a healthier smile without disrupting their routines. The emotional impact of a confident smile is just as important. Dr. Gronberg often sees patients begin treatment shy, avoiding eye contact or hiding their teeth. As they engage with the office and their alignment improves, their confidence blossoms. Their posture shifts, their personalities emerge, and they begin to smile openly. Whether you want to make a transformative change for yourself or set your child on the proper path for oral health, Dr. Gronberg and Dr. Sugay assure, “It’s never too late to get the smile you’ve always wanted.”

PICKLEBALL with a PURPOSE How Three Local Teens Used Their Passion to Unite the Community for a Cause ARTICLE BY SOPHIE BETZHOLD PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE PICKLEBALL ALLIANCE

Inspired by their love of racket sports and passion for giving back to the community, three local teens—Eshaan Sheth, Naseem Rhaman, and Vedanth Chamala—decided to create the Pickleball Alliance, “an organization dedicated to uniting the local population whilst making an impact across the globe.” By hosting pickleball tournaments at local courts, the trio has raised money for charitable organizations like the Himalayan Health Initiative, the American Red Cross, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and other nonprofits. The Pickleball Alliance provides a fun-filled and welcoming environment to people of all ages and skill levels. As their first charity pickleball tournament came to an end in the spring of 2024, Eshaan, Naseem, and Vedanth were appreciative when an older gentleman approached and thanked them for hosting, especially since the tournament had taken more work to coordinate than the group of teens had expected. The man explained the difficulty in bringing different age groups in the community together since the Covid-19 pandemic and how much he enjoyed participating in the tournament. “That’s when I started to realize the true impact the Pickleball Alliance had,” Pickleball Alliance president Eshaan Sheth said. Though the founders have since graduated from Marcus High School and are now in college, they plan on passing the torch to younger kids in the community to keep the alliance alive. They hope to inspire others to “raise money through what you’re passionate about by doing what you love and caring about the impact you are making,” Sheth said.

THE MOM WALK COLLECTIVE - HIGHLAND VILLAGE

The Mom Walk Collective of Highland Village Helps Moms Find Friendship and Fun

For many stay-at-home parents, days are overrun with cleaning, cooking, and caring for children, often excluding time to enjoy simple pleasures like meeting with a friend. It was a craving for connection that led Jamie Easton, then three months postpartum, to first start The Mom Walk Collective (TMWC) in her California hometown. Since her initial request for other moms to join her for a walk on social media, TMWC has grown to include over 350+ cities across the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean, and South Africa, including a local chapter in Highland Village. Local moms Alexis Burris and Kendyl Ferch became the leaders of TMWCHighland Village in early 2025. Kendyl had heard about the group and encouraged Alexis to join her on a walk. After their first walk, they were hooked. “It brought us so much joy getting out of the house and connecting with other moms,” recalls Alexis. While TMWC is designed for moms, other caregivers join in on the walks too,

Caring Connections

including dads and grandmothers, always with little ones in tow. Alexis and Kendyl plan the twice-monthly walks and other meetups on a variety of days to include others as much as possible in the fun. At the beginning of each event, Alexis and Kendyl lead the group, typically about 10 to 15 moms, through introductions and icebreaker activities to help encourage friendship building. For anyone thinking of joining TMWC on one of their free walks, Alexis wants them to know, “It’s about connection, showing up, building the community, and reminding moms that you don’t have to do this alone. Whether you’re a brand-new mom, a seasoned mom, or anywhere in between, we have someone that’s going through the same season of life. You’re never alone when you walk with us.” Find dates and times on Instagram by following @themomwalkco.highlandvillage.

THE RISE OF PICKLEBALL ARTICLE BY ANGI BURNS

A SPORT FOR ALL AGES

Pickleball, a dynamic blend of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, has rapidly become one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. Originally invented in the 1960s, it’s gained widespread popularity in recent years due to its accessibility, social nature, and adaptability for players of all ages and skill levels. Played on a smaller court with a paddle and a plastic ball, pickleball offers a fun and engaging way to stay active while building community.
