LIFESTYLE LETTER

Spreading the LOVE locally! What a gift to have a whole month centered around LOVE! Love is the most important need we all have and can freely give which doesn’t cost a thing. In fact, it’s said that giving love actually gives you a gift in return... joy! Who couldn’t use a little extra joy? Turns out, showing someone love can have a huge impact and could even save a life. If your heart is stirred to show an act of kindness, don’t hesitate, act on it. It may be the very thing, word or act someone you love, a neighbor or a stranger desperately needed. Love has been defined in many ways… here are a few that may apply to this month’s stories: An intense feeling of deep affection for a person or thing (love for their city, state or country). A strong affection for another arising out of kinship, personal ties or based on admiration, benevolence or common interest. Or, unselfish, loyal and benevolent – concern for the good of another. There is a scripture that embodies this to me and feels like a good golden rule to follow: “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” When we put others before ourselves, we are spreading love. We hope you will get as much joy as we did from the incredible stories of love, selflessness, acts of service, love for state and country, caring hearts for our local citizens and businesses as well as ideas to show those around you how much they matter in this month's issue! Enjoy and share your love a little each day! Many blessings!

community boards and initiatives, I recognized the pivotal role that the Chamber plays in bringing together businesses, fostering economic growth, and creating an environment conducive to success. I saw this role as an opportunity to contribute to the flourishing development of Flower Mound, using my skills and experiences to enhance the Chamber’s mission. The fivestar recognition reflects our commitment to business excellence and our dedication to the holistic well-being of Flower Mound and its residents.” Becoming a Chamber of Commerce member, aside from structured membership costs, of course, means being encouraged to engage actively in various Chamber activities including networking events, business forums and community initiatives. The time spent taking part in these events is an investment in building relationships, expanding professional networks and keeping abreast of local business developments. President Lori Walker says her aim is to see “that the Chamber is committed to delivering tangible value to its members, ensuring that their investment contributes to the growth and success of their own business.” That 5-Star rating speaks volumes.

ARTICLE BY BUD HOLLADAY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY FLOWER MOUND

The very first Chamber of Commerce was organized with that name in 1599, in Marseille, France. We were a bit slow on our side of the pond: the first American Chamber started in New York, almost two centuries later. And this year, your local Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce earned the prestigious designation of “Accredited with 5 Stars,” the pinnacle of recognition by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. No small feat, that: local chambers are rated Accredited, 3-Stars, 4-Stars or 5-Stars and it can take months for a local chamber to meet the strict criteria for 5-Stars. U.S. Chamber Vice President Raymond P. Towle states, “When chambers of commerce earn the distinction of becoming Accredited, it is a mark of excellence for the organization, its staff, and its leadership.” Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce President Lori Walker proudly points out, “The Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce is more than just a business organization; it’s a dynamic force that actively works to enhance the overall quality of life in our community.” Lori, who has led the local chamber since 2013, explains “Having been actively involved in various

ROW HOUSE FLOWER MOUND CELEBRATES NEW ROWING FILM “THE BOYS IN THE BOAT”

ARTICLE BY MALLORY MCKEEVER

On January 5th, Row House Flower Mound hosted their members at the Movie House Flower Mound for a night of celebrating the showing of “The Boys in the Boat”. The sports drama tells the story of the underdog rowing team from the University of Washington, the USA team that competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics. Row machines placed in the Movie House gave the community members who attended a feel for what Team USA might have gone through during practice. After all, rowing isn’t so much about exercise, but about the community experience.

16

O UR TOWN | L I FE + C ULT U RE

At the Row House Flower Mound location, owner Ryan Kimberling gestures to the room of sleek rowing machines with pride. It’s an experience, Ryan explains, all driven by the coach who rows at the front, controlling the lights and music and guiding the 25 participants behind them. “For the most part, in class, we row in what we call ‘in swing’. So everyone is rowing at the same pace, together.” Ryan hops on a machine and demonstrates, “The concept is pretty cool in that it’s an effort-based machine. At a lot of places, you’ll see individual leaderboards. But on our screens we average the machines together, what their pace is and how far they’ve gone.” This concept is huge for the rowing community, both in the film and in Flower Mound, it’s about the boat as a whole, not about how one individual is doing better than another. “It’s an amazing machine that anyone could do,” Ryan says, from the marathon runner to the 70-yearold to the person new to fitness. “I feel like that is pretty rare in the workout space.” Because of this, a first-time rower can hop into any class. With such an amazing crew and an amazing machine to build a community with, the event operated as simply another step in fostering the Row House community and giving the public a chance to see how much it cares for its members and the sport. Consider Row House’s recent celebration of the film that showcases the incredible community rowing offers, an open invitation to join the crew.

“It’s about the boat as a whole, not about how one individual is doing better than another.”

Sutera Spa celebrates 20 years of steam showers and slippers

The divine smell of delicious fragrances and luxury products hits you as you walk into Sutera Spa. This is a direct result of the last 20 years they have spent in Flower Mound. “After 20 years, it’s infused in the walls,” says Stacey Maness, owner of Sutera Spa. “We were the first spa in the area,” Stacey explains, glancing around at the beautifully textured walls and textured stonework of the door frames. Toward the back rooms, a small stone fountain trickles against the wall, adding to the ambiance of the halls. “We have three esthetic rooms,” she explains, opening doors in the hallways to reveal a couple’s room and several massage rooms. Inside the women’s locker, Stacey rearranges the towel baskets and tidies the area around the multi-head shower. In the men’s locker room, she showcases the

steam shower. Lilting music echoes throughout the tiled locker rooms. In the lounge area, a stunning yet subtle Tuscan sky dome rises in the ceiling, a cloudy sky of pastels over the heads of guests seated in the lounge. “Business is business,” Stacey says, “but what is your widget?” She gestures to the halls of the spa with its dreamy blue couch and high-backed chairs, “This is my widget. I’ve done lots of business classes and it doesn’t matter what your business is, just find something that you’re passionate about. I just love all things girly, all things pretty.” Stacey smiles, crossing her patent heels, “I love makeup, hair and clothes.” The joy of the industry shines in Sutera, from Stacey’s beaming smile to the Tuscan sky over our heads. “This is really a business that makes people happy. You don’t get angry people here. We make people feel good about themselves.” For 20 years now, Sutera has been working to not only boost the confidence of their customers but even help them feel better physically with massages and other treatments. But it all comes back to her team, Stacey says, raving more about the girls working beside her in the spa than herself. “I’ve been so very, very blessed here,” she says. “Most of my staff have been here for 10 to 12 years. I have a tremendous staff. We’re family. We fight and we make up and we move on.” She laughs, repeating, “I’m very, very blessed with my staff.” The depth of love for her staff and the spa’s existence as one of the first spas in the area

are two of the things that make Sutera Spa so unique. “It’s just the longevity of the staff that have been here. Very few people have staff that just stay and stay and stay.” Why do they stay though? The industry seems to be everchanging and yet Sutera, Stacey says, does things differently and intentionally. “Everybody here understands that they have a voice and that they matter. I have ideas for how I want the place to look and the direction. But all my staff gets input in everything we do, from our monthly specials to what treatments to bring on next. I’m very fortunate I have a lot of creative people here with me.” The future of Sutera, Stacey says, looks like growing and pursuing excellence just as steadily as in the past. “I want to maintain the standard that we’ve created. We need to continue to grow just a little bit more.” Stacey explains the deep passion they have for connecting and growing, continually asking herself, “How can we look more into the community?” Stacey herself has been active in the Rotary Club for 12 years. Sutera’s holiday party benefits a new charity every year such as Winning the Fight, the chosen charity of 2023, and 100 Women That Care, Stacey’s favorite charity. For their 20-year celebration, Stacey is looking at hosting events with special deals. “There’s very few small businesses that can say that we’ve lasted. We have not just lasted, we’ve thrived for 20 years.”

“This is really a business that makes people happy. You don’t get angry people here. We make people feel good about themselves.” 20

“ We j u s t wa nt you t o c o m e i n a n d e s c a p e f ro m you r eve r yd ay l i fe a n d e n j oy a n a m a z i n g ex p e r ie n c e .”

In 2018, when Marty was seated in The Ritz-Carlton during a vacation in San Francisco, the heart of 1845 Taste Texas was born, sketched onto a napkin. A circle with a star around the date 1845, a brand that would one day be burned onto burger buns and wooden cutting boards. Marty and Brian lean back into their chairs and explain, “1845 is the year that we say Texas allowed the other part of the country to join it.” Marty says, glinting a bright smile, “Late December of 1845, Texas became a part of the union. So here in 1845 Taste Texas, we tell the story of Texas.” At the heart of 1845 is its three owners, Marty Bryan, Alan Mann, and Brian Gasperson. Marty and Brian were old acquaintances and friends from their days working at Outback Steakhouse, while Alan was Marty’s fellow business partner from Cotton Patch Cafe. Brian and Alan, he explains, weed through Marty’s multitude of ideas (too many ideas sometimes, Marty admits laughingly) and bring them to life. While Marty creates the concepts, food and recipes, Brian manages alcohol and vendor relationships and customer relations, and Alan covers the financial and administrative side of the restaurant, keeping them “safe, clean, and legal.” 1845 Taste Texas opened in June of 2020. “Intentionality, work and hustle, and desire, those three things together are what makes this restaurant,” Brian says, “I’ve learned in my life that most people aren’t intentional. We’re very intentional about the plates, the lighting, the music, the feeling, the plate

presentation, how we give you water. We spend a lot of time just talking to our staff about these decisions. I can promise you there’s nobody in the restaurant business in Denton County that has thought about more about every step than us.” “We are a local, family-owned, Texan, Christianbased company. We’re here to give folks an amazing experience. We just want you to come in and escape from your everyday life and enjoy an amazing experience,” Marty says. “And it starts right at the front door,” Brian adds. Intentional excellence lies at the heart of it all, every element telling a Texas story, “We like to say that it’s designed like Dallas, but tastes like Fort Worth.” “I’m born and raised in Texas. I’ve been in lots of states and there’s nothing like Texas,” Brian says, “I can’t put it in words. People take so much pride in being from the state of Texas. [This restaurant] is just a great way to compliment the whole state.” 1845 Taste Texas is exactly what the name suggests: a taste of Texas. Every detail is designed to be a lover letter to Texas and highlight the love Texans have for their state, from the pork chops, wings, meatballs, salmon, artichokes, and garlic that are smoked in-house to the venison and fried quail combo to Sir Loin, the longhorn mounted on the wall above the bar, to the music of only Texas born musicians that whisper in the moody lighting of the restaurant. 1845 Taste Texas goes beyond the food and is rooted deeply in love for our great Lone Star State.

Darling Destinations ROMANCE AWAITS AT THESE LOCAL VALENTINE VACATION SPOTS

Nautical treehouse, Grandview Treetops

It’s February. The holiday-season buzz has faded with the sun through January. The children have returned to school and the parents to work. It’s the dead of winter; it’s cold, or at least as cold as it can be in Texas. But, this season still has cause for celebration. Afterall, it holds the month that brings Valentine’s Day, a centuries old tradition of letting those you love know you appreciate and care for them. The temperature outside gives all the more reason to cozy up with a loved one, and what better way to do that than to escape with them on a romantic getaway? You don’t have to travel too far to find the perfect spot to unwind and recharge together, and celebrate the holiday in style. SKYBOX CABINS, GLEN ROSE TX You may have visited Glen Rose, but have you ever fully experienced the beautiful landscape all to yourself overnight? Less than a mile from Dinosaur Valley State Park and Fossil Rim, nestled in the treetops of the northernmost point of the Texas Hill Country sits SkyBox Cabins, a glamping experience that is sure to spark romance. Enjoy a cup of coffee and watch the sunrise outside any of the five private dwellings SkyBox has for rent. Each space has its own unique attractions including a hot tub, luxury deck, hammock, geodome, treehouse, or A-frame design, but all offer breath-taking views of the sunset and the countless stars that follow, of course, best enjoyed with a glass of wine.

NAUTICAL TREEHOUSE, GRANDVIEW TX There’s no better way to grow a relationship than by escaping to a place that will make you forget about reality, and this nautical themed Airbnb does just that. Climb the ship ladder to the top deck of this unique home to spot wildlife, take in your surroundings above the trees, or simply to spin the helm! Down below, couples can relax by the firepit, grill a 5-star steak, and swing on the hammock. This whimsical escape, situated on a large ranch in Grandview, has every element needed for a peaceful, serene weekend away with a loved one. THE JOULE, DALLAS TX Looking for some action away from home? Head south, straight to the heart of Downtown Dallas for a luxurious stay at The Joule, a boutique hotel built with romance and relaxation in mind. Though you are steps away from endless entertainment outside, one could spend an entire day indoors. Wake up to a daily breakfast in bed. Take the elevator up to the roof to lounge by the pool and connected bar. Book a massage or facial at the top-rated spa. Satisfy your tastebuds with housemade pasta downstairs. End the night sipping on a martini at the subterranean cocktail bar, and do it all again the next day. Reserve in advance to ensure the only tough decision you’ll need to make during your stay is if you saved room for dessert! CASA KUMWESU, WACO TX Young or old, rich or poor, one thing is universal…everyone loves ice cream! The ultimate photo-op, “sweet retreat,” and “ice cream dream,” Casa Kumesu has capitalized on that fact. Perfect for Valentine’s or Galentine’s, stay at this funky, ice cream themed rental for an unforgettable weekend. Can’t leave the kids at home? After all, everyone knows Valentine’s Day is all about sweets.

Calibrating the

Community SPRE ADING LOVE ONE C AR AT A TIME

It’s February and love is in the air. I find it in family, in friendships, in nature, in pets and in my mechanic. Wait, what? Yes, I have truly found a place that loves me and my car and makes caring for my vehicle a pleasant experience. Visit Caliber Auto Care and you will feel the love too, from exceptional customer service to caring and kind-hearted repair people. Caliber Collision has been a trusted company in our community for many years. Unfortunately, accidents will happen. But it is good to know that there is a trusted and reliable company to help when we need someone to put our vehicles back together. After years of successful collision repair, the Caliber team wanted to expand their services and found a business model that

focused on a high-quality customer experience that would bring rhythm and ease to the repairing of vehicles while creating a relationship with guests that promoted confidence and trust in their services. Since its beginning in 2017, Caliber Auto Care has maintained those goals of excellent customer care for our community. Caliber Auto Care prides itself on creating an upscale service center. Laughing, he recalls that car repair fell below teeth cleaning. I hope the dentists can laugh here as well. So Caliber made it a mission to change that view for all customers. “What is best for the guest?” is the question that guides the service, decision-making and relationship with each person who walks through their door. Upon entering, I was warmly greeted with a smile. Being noticed is important. Image is also very important and Caliber has captured a welcoming environment that is beautifully decorated with plush and relaxing chairs. There are three TVs with something to watch for everyone (which means I do not have to watch sports updates). Children will love the play area with three levels to climb and a car at the top to drive. I enjoyed a delicious coffee from the upscale beverage center complete with a bar that is designed for customers to plug in their device and work as they wait, with an excellent view from the large windows. With 15 bays and top-rated teammates, you will not have to wait long even though you may want to stay. As well as a relaxing wait, Caliber can also provide a conference room for working, rides where you need to go and picking up your car at your location. A feeling of comfort surrounded me as I waited. Some women may feel intimidated visiting the mechanic because of lack of experience or knowledge. Caliber has worked hard to ensure that all guests will feel comfortable when making decisions about auto service by taking the mystery out of auto care. The well-trained service providers will offer recommendations for their work complete with pictures, detailed explanations and warranties that will back the high level of quality work. There is no pressure and

discussions with your spouse or partner before work begins are encouraged. I had such a fun time talking to the Caliber folks for this article and know that a car conversation will be just as comfortable. Feeling confident in your mechanic is a must. Caliber sets high standards for their teammates and looks for people who are willing to uphold the culture and beliefs of the center. “What is best for our guests will be best for our company as well,” says Mason. The family at Caliber Auto Care has filled the facility with teammates who have a servant’s heart. Caliber’s involvement with the National Auto Body Council Recycled Rides © program provides fully restored vehicles to veterans, active duty service members, first responders and others in need of reliable transportation. They annually host the Restoring You™ Food Drive during the summer for children who do not have access to school meals during this time. By partnering with the American Heart Association, Caliber helps to raise funding for research to beat heart disease while also educating their teammates on healthy lifestyle choices. Currently, Caliber has more than 25,000 teammates certified in hands-only CPR throughout the country. As I visited the center in December, I noticed a box of toys that was overflowing with donations for Toys for Tots that would make so many children in our community smile during the holidays. Not only does Caliber offer excellent repair service, but also consider them for their express services such as state inspections, oil changes, tire repairs, headlight replacements and much more. From reliable service to amazing community involvement and support, it is clear why Caliber is trusted with Restoring the Rhythm of Your Life© as their company slogan states. Car trouble never comes at a convenient time. But if you need a repair or service, it is good to know there is a place nearby that can love on both you and your car.

HOW DATCU AND LISD ARE JOINING FORCES FOR BOTH TEACHERS AND STUDENTS

ARTICLE BY MALLORY MCKEEVER

Tommy White, Senior VP of Marketing at DATCU, gives a personal look at the recent partnership between DATCU and LISD, what it means, how it happened, and how our own community will reap the benefits.

THE PURPOSE Our purpose is to help people. That’s it. We have supported LISD and other school districts for decades. This partnership allows us to consolidate that support and truly commit to LISD for another ten years and beyond. It is more than a one-time agreement; it is proof that we really want the best for everyone around us and that DATCU is a credit union with purpose. DATCU’S LOVE FOR LISD LISD consistently provides the best possible education in the area, it is a school district entirely devoted to the future of our community. They prepare students to be successful in whatever career path they choose and because of that, our quality of life will continue to improve for generations. LISD is a major gear in our economic engine because they develop our workforce and build pride in our area. THE PROCESS This partnership is great because of the open dialogue we share with LISD. We listened to them for months to really understand what they needed and tried to create an agreement that benefitted them the most. They were open and honest with their priorities, and just that process of trying to understand each other strengthened our relationship with them.

THE HEART OF DATCU We were established by teachers nearly a century ago. Area educators make up a very strong community of people who look out for each other and care for the needs of one another. [This partnership] demonstrates our belief that education thrives in a community with strong support. LISD has great teachers, administrators, and students. That’s a community we want to support. We want them to know they have an ally and a local credit union willing to provide them with resources to do their jobs well. Educators are often unsung but they do so much to improve the lives of their students. We just want to return the favor and let them know that we recognize their leadership. REAL-LIFE IMPLICATIONS In a very practical way, our sponsorship keeps resources in the classroom. Our sponsorship alleviates some of the financial pressure and allows the district to keep their funding focused on students and teachers [by helping to fund] the Lewisville ISD Education Foundation, purchase backpacks and supplies for the Back to School Fair, and support internships through the annual Career Out program. Those are all important programs that need community involvement. We’re happy to lead that charge and to do so knowing that the district’s resources can stay focused on the classroom.
