July - The Summer Fun Issue

Happy July Friends,

What a wonderful month to begin a new journey as Publisher of Cross Timbers Lifestyle! Jane Krzysiak has left very big shoes to fill. Thank you, Jane for trusting me to carry on your legacy and grow our community partners to build on the foundation you have created.

My name is Rachael Fenton, and it is my honor to be your new publisher, partner and friend! A little about me … I was born and raised in Fort Worth. I spent some wonderful years living in Kansas, California and Kentucky before making Texas my home again. A few of my past careers were serving in Senior Living, Travel, Hotel & Tourism, Hospitality & Events, Fundraising for Non- Profits and most recently gourmet kitchen products at a regional level. My expertise is in Sales and Marketing, but really it’s been about building true friendships and lasting relationships.

My husband, Elvin and I live in Argyle with our family. We have five kids, seven grandbabies, three dogs and two grand-dogs and enjoy traveling and spending time with our family. On a weekly basis, you will find us working, eating and playing in the Flower Mound, Highland Village and Lewisville areas.

The gift of this magazine in Jane’s retirement was truly a divine connection. My hope is to encourage fellowship and community, build partnerships, inspire hearts and connect our local community each month as we grow together.

Enjoy this issue focused on summer fun and travel! Create an Outdoor Oasis with Complete Landscuplture and fire up the grill!  Cara Price, creator of The Nourished Body & Soul blog, gives us some tasty recipes. When it comes to summer date nights, we've got you covered with our list of live music events. And our picks for Local Experiences are sure to keep the family entertained.  For those searching for a fun roadtrip, we've highlighted a favorite of mine, Fredricksburg, a gem in the heart of the Hill Country. Looking for the perfect poolside read? Flower Mound Library’s Sue Ridnour, offers summer book suggestions.

Sadly, this will be Editor Stephanie Hasbrouck's, last issue of Cross Timbers Lifestyle. She and her family are moving to Little Rock, Ark. Stephanie says it has been a great honor to live in Flower Mound and write about its amazing community members, whom she will miss. Stephanie thank you for inspiring and enlightening us over the years. You will be greatly missed.

Moving forward, we are excited to begin this new chapter at  Cross Timbers Lifestyle and continue to serve you, your families and businesses in the days ahead!

Many blessings,

The Barron’s “Top 1,200 Financial Advisors: State-by-State” list, published annually in March; rankings based on data as of Sept. 30 of prior year. Rankings considered advisors with a minimum of seven years financial services experience, who have been employed at their current firm for at least one year. The Top 1,200 award included top advisors in each state, with the number of ranking spots determined by each state’s population and wealth. For both awards, other quantitative and qualitative measures include assets under management, revenues generated by advisors for their firms, and the quality of the advisors’ practices, regulatory records, internal company documents, and data provided by the advisors themselves.

Rankings based on data as of March 31 of current year. Data provided by SHOOK™ Research, LLC. The awards are based on an algorithm of qualitative and quantitative data, rating thousands of wealth advisors with a minimum of seven years of experience and weighing factors like revenue trends, assets under management, compliance records, industry experience and best practices learned through telephone and in-person interviews. Investment performance is not a criterion because client objectives and risk tolerances vary, and advisors rarely have audited performance reports. CREATING AN OUTDOOR OASIS

of each client. We have deep experience and a wide portfolio of projects that we can draw from to help our clients achieve the environment they want to create whether it’s a pool with outdoor living, to a fireplace with an outdoor kitchen, to a sport court or bocce ball court, or to a zen garden for relaxing. We are proficient in both residential and commercial applications for full landscape designs.

DOES IMPROVING AND EXPANDING  OUTDOOR SPACES INCREASE ONE'S PROPERTY VALUES?

COMPLETE LANDSCULPTURE GIVES HOMEOWNERS ALFRESCO LIVING SPACES OF THEIR DREAMS

IS SUMMER A GOOD TIME FOR HOMEOWNERS TO BEGIN THINKING ABOUT IMPROVING THEIR OUTDOOR SPACES? IF SO, WHY?

Yes! The best time to start planning/designing a project is now. Depending on the project, scope involved and the time to design and build–a project can take many months. Many landscape projects can be accomplished quickly, and if there are seasonal-related concerns regarding hot or cold weather our experienced consultants are here to guide the timing of the project.

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS THAT COMPLETE LANDSCULPTURE CAN HELP HOMEOWNERS IMPROVE THEIR OUTDOOR SPACES SO THEY MAY GET THE MOST OUT OF IT YEAR-ROUND?

We strive to be a complete outdoor solution for our clients so they can maximize their enjoyment of their outdoor spaces. Our approach is to ask questions and understand the needs and vision of each client. We tailor our designs and services to achieve the goals

With the events of the past few years, we have seen a trend in people and businesses investing in their own properties to maximize their enjoyment of where and how they spend most of their time. The feedback is they are traveling less and creating spaces that fit their individual needs. While this has created more enjoyable spaces while our client is in their home, this has upped the stakes for competitiveness when residential properties go up for sale. Property owners who have invested in their outdoor spaces often cut their timeline on the market and command top dollar for their properties.

HOW DOES COMPLETE LANDSCULPTURE HELP HOMEOWNERS DESIGN AN OUTDOOR SPACE THAT IS PERFECT FOR THEM?

We start by connecting with our clients on how they want to get the most out of their outdoor space from the moment they arrive at their property to what activities they enjoy most while home. We often say, ‘We will build the dream. You create the memories.’

WHAT SERVICES DOES COMPLETE LANDSCULPTURE PROVIDE?

We provide complete landscape maintenance services for both commercial and residential properties. We provide complete

14

services; typically people think of lawn and bed maintenance, irrigation services, fertilize and weed control, seasonal color and mulching. In addition to what I think most people will think of when they read this, we also have our tree care division that provides anything from an assessment of the trees on a property to any recommended treatments, fertilizations, pruning, tree removal or recommended tree installation. We have experienced arborists on staff who are happy to help with any questions.

WHAT ARE SOME SPECIFIC PROJECTS THAT ARE ON-TREND RIGHT NOW WHEN IT COMES TO OUTDOOR RENOVATIONS?

There are quite a few over the last few years now that people have spent more time at home, but I would say they tend to center around fire and water. We design and build custom pools and fountains, as well as outdoor living areas that often include kitchens with grills, smokers and flatirons. We are generally including some type of fire feature to compliment the pools and outdoor living areas like fireplaces, firepits and fire bowls. Items that aren’t quite as trendy, but we have seen an uptick in is activity based features like sport courts and bocce ball courts. I'm anticipating we'll start seeing more sport courts set up for pickleball moving forward.

CONTINUED > 15 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/CROSSTIMBERS JULY 2023

IF YOU COULD SUGGEST ONE OUTDOOR RENOVATION TO ALL HOMEOWNERS, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I can’t suggest one. Our clients are too diverse, and there's no one outdoor project to recommend. What I would recommend is for anyone interested in an outdoor project, ask yourself, ‘What is the most impactful thing that would give me the most joy in my outdoor space?’ Let’s start with that!

WHAT IS YOUR GOAL WHEN WORKING WITH CLIENTS?

Our mission at Complete Landsculpture is to deliver complete outdoor fanatical client experiences. Simply put, we want to deliver on our clients’ expectations and create a relationship for life. You might need us once a week, or you might need us once every 10 years. We want to be the landscape team you trust and work with for years.

Complete Landsculpture is a full-service landscape maintenance provider for both commercial and residential properties. Services include turf management, flowerbed maintenance, irrigation monitoring and full-service tree care by certified aborists. The company also is an award-winning design/build landscape provider whose projects encompass all aspects of outdoor living and landscape needs.

ESCAPE TO FABULOUS FREDERICKSBURG

THE JEWEL OF THE HILL COUNTRY IS THE PERFECT PICK FOR A QUICK GETAWAY!

MUST SEE | TRAVEL
22

Originally published in The Woodlands City Lifestyle

Nestled in the heart of the Hill Country and brimming with history, culture and dining options, Fredericksburg has transformed in recent years as a top Texas travel destination.  More popularly known for its wineries, this idyllic hill country stop was recently voted the most charming spot for a southern vacation.

Fredericksburg is a great place to visit all year long, with blooming wildflowers ablaze in Spring, grape harvest season towards the end of summer, Octoberfest in the fall, and magical holiday time when the whole town lights up like a scene from a Hallmark movie.

What makes this unofficial food and wine capital of the Lone Star State unique is its German heritage, which has influenced a melting pot of food and architecture.

Getting There:  Driving makes for an easy and scenic day trip, but you can also opt for a more exclusive, quicker journey by flying directly into Gillespie County airport via a chartered plane.

Stay:  Fredericksburg offers a range of lodging options, from historic log cabins and cozy bed and breakfasts to more unique stays.

• Properties in the Heart of Fredericksburg The Blacksmith Quarters on Barons Creek Located right

off Main Street, this stunning compound of cottages is set on an original blacksmith property. The cottages are named after the family’s children and reflect the different time periods and styles of construction throughout Fredericksburg.

• The Gathering Guesthouse Built by descendants of early German settlers in 1933, a historic craftsman style home renewed into a modern farmhouse

• The Vineyard Trail Cottages  Well-located near several wineries along the "Wine Corridor" and about 10 minutes from Main Street, you can’t beat the peaceful setting.

• One-of-a-Kind Stays If you are looking for a unique experience, check out the many multi-level lavish treehouses, Blue Skies Retro Resort where you can pick one of their five Palm Springs inspired vintage trailers, or a historic Silo at River Ranch Resort.

Things to Do: Because Fredericksburg is the epicenter of Texas Wine Country, it's easy enjoy the wealth of wineries in the area and so much more.

• History Learn about Fredericksburg's German heritage with a stop at the Pioneer Museum, head to Marktplatz, the town square where Vereins Kirche, a replica of a 19th-century church, stands tall, and the National Museum of the Pacific War which features WWII exhibits, including a recreated combat zone.

• Wineries Spanning approximately 9 million acres, Texas Hill Country AVA (American Viticultural Area), which includes Fredericksburg, is the second largest certified viticultural area in America. With more than 50 wineries in Fredericksburg’s Gillespie County alone, the biggest question is where to start. Here are our recommendations: Ab Astris, Augusta Vin, Becker Vineyards, Pedernales Cellars, Signor Vineyards, and Heath Sparkling Wines for a little bubbly.

• Pro Tip: Book one of the many wine tours or hop on the 290 shuttle which departs every 10 minutes from downtown Fredericksburg every Friday and Saturday.

• Breweries & Distilleries Don’t miss out on the many Bavarian inspired biergartens, the oldest brewpub in Texas - Fredericksburg Brewing Company, and Alstadt Brewery. For something stronger stop by Garrison Brothers, home of the first bourbon distillery outside Kentucky.

• Shopping With franchises and chain stores not allowed in the historic district, you are guaranteed to discover rare heirlooms and locally made products.

• Art Galleries Named one of “Top Five Western Art Towns” by Southwest Art Magazine and home to numerous working artists, Fredericksburg is an art lover’s paradise. Stroll through the First Friday Art Walk or visit the dozens of galleries located on the west end of Marktplatz.

• Get Outdoors For most Texans, summitting the pink granite Enchanted Rock is almost a rite

of passage. A stone’s throw away from Fredericksburg, a visit to this natural area offers the opportunity to not only disconnect but take in stunning vistas of the expansive hill country. Fredericksburg is also a popular birding spot, and offers scenic views for bicycle riding and stargazing with two international dark sky parks.

• Peaches and Pecans A favorite Texas summertime staple, make sure to stop by a roadside stand to pick up this fresh fruit from the many surrounding orchards during peach season, which runs mid-May through August. In the fall and holiday season, many roadside stands also offer pecans.

Dining Out:  From bratwurst to brews, this Texas town flaunts its German heritage. Make sure to try the classics, but leave room for the contemporary eateries.

SUMMER READING LIST

Central Places Nocturne

In this debut novel, a young woman’s past and present collide when she brings her white, Manhattanborn fiancé home to meet her Chinese immigrant parents. Audrey Zhou returns to her tiny hometown in Illinois for the first time since high school, and as she reunites with old friends and especially an old crush, she is forced to consider whether the choices she made that put her where she is today were the right ones.

Grace Dragotta is an orphan, living a hard-scrabble life in 1930 Chicago when she gets the chance to achieve her life-long dream of becoming a prima ballerina. Unfortunately, that chance comes with a catch involving a mysterious patron in this loose retelling of Beauty and the Beast , with hints of Phantom of the Opera. Set in winter, this fairytale-like story is magical, atmospheric and haunting.

Our Best Intentions

High school student Angie Singh, only child of an immigrant single father, is walking home from the high school pool in their affluent community when she finds a wealthy white classmate, stabbed and bleeding on the football field. The prime suspect is a runaway black girl. Told through multiple points of view, this debut novel is both an examination of the effects of privilege and racial bias on a community and a riveting thriller.

Secrets Typed in Blood Two Wars and a Wedding

The year is 1947, the place is New York City. A serial killer is imitating fiction, that of crime magazine writer Holly Quick. Reluctant to go to the police, Holly calls in the private eye team of Willowjean “Will” Parker and her boss, Lillian Pentecost. The wisecracks and plot twists fly as the detectives narrow in on the killer in this cozy mystery, the third book in the Nero Award-winning “Pentecost and Parker” series.

Betsy and her friend Ava struggle to make their way in a man’s world in this story set in the Greco-Turkish and SpanishAmerican wars. Betsy is an aspiring archeologist, visiting Athens when she is thrust into nursing. Returning to the U.S., she wants nothing further to do with wartime but is drawn back into nursing when she follows Ava to Cuba, along with Clara Barton and Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders. With history, romance, intrigue and adventure, this story has something for everyone.

What Lies in the Woods

“They were eleven when they sent a killer to prison. They were heroes… but they were liars.” Naomi Shaw and her best friends Cassidy and Olivia were playing in the woods when Naomi was attacked. The girls’ testimony sent a man to jail, a man wanted for murdering six women. Twentytwo years later, that man has died in prison, and Naomi travels back to her hometown to reunite with her old friends and uncover what really happened in the woods that day.

SUMMER SKIN CARE

CONTRIBUTED

SpaVela Offers Myriad Treatments for Beautiful Summer Skin

Summer is the season for pampering oneself, and SpaVela is the perfect place for a day of well-deserved care.

“Pampering is so underrated,” says SpaVela Esthetician and Laser Technician Jenna Gautille. “We’ve had a rough three years as a society, and self-care as a whole has taken a backseat. Regardless of what has happened in the world, self-care is a necessity.”

SpaVela offers a wide range of self-care services, including a variety of sophisticated facial and laser treatments. During the hot Texas months, skin care is of the utmost importance, Jenna says, and SpaVela’s facials are tailored to each client’s specific needs.

“Skin care is not cookie cutter; one size does not fit all,” she says. “The purpose of a skincare routine is to maintain the largest organ you have. The aging process cannot be stopped, but it can progress more gracefully.”

SpaVela’s estheticians offer complimentary consultations to help clients map their skincare journeys. “Are they wanting to work on fine lines and wrinkles? Texture? Pores? Are they young, mature, oily, sensitive? The possibilities are endless … No one skincare routine is the same. Skin care is very individualized, and that’s what makes it wonderful,” Jenna says.

SpaVela constantly is evolving and adding treatments to serve each unique client. “The new services we have

are incredible!” Jenna says. “We have a new laser available for our clients. It involves skin resurfacing, diminishment of dark spots, redness and rosacea, small broken veins, and restimulates collagen and elastin. You see great results two weeks after. You see killer results three months later.

“We also have quick and painless laser hair removal for any and all skin tones and types. Full legs can be treated in less than eight minutes comfortably.”  And with SpaVela’s innovative technology, Jenna says there is no downtime from the pool. “The best part is, you can have been in the sun prior to your treatment and get to the pool the following day!”

SpaVela offers specialized treatments for women and men of all ages. “If you have skin, skincare is for you,” Jenna says. In addition, SpaVela offers couples treatments that make for a perfectly relaxing date.

“There are so many things we can offer anyone in all walks of life to help better their skin health and overall self care. Come check us out. Everyone is welcome!”

SpaVela is a luxury med and day spa offering a variety of wellness and beauty-enhancing services to help clients look and feel their best from the inside out. SpaVela is located in Lakeside, adjacent to Lakeside Tower. For a complete list of SpaVela’s treatment and med-spa offerings, visit SpaVela.com.

Jenna’s tips for healthy summer skin

“Everyone wants to know what the miracle cream is to keep you young; it’s sunscreen – no question!” Jenna says.

• Sunscreen should be used every day, regardless of the season and regardless of the weather. If it’s daytime, the sun is in the sky, and you are getting sun damage.

• Sunscreen should be separate from other products. There is not enough sunscreen in foundation, bb creams, etc. to give you the protection advertised. You need 2 milliliters of sunscreen to get the protection labeled on the bottle.

• Sunscreen should be reapplied about every two hours because it becomes ineffective after 80 minutes.

• Don’t want to take off your makeup to reapply sunscreen? No problem! Many setting sprays and powders have high concentrations of sunscreen built-in and don’t disturb makeup.
