Home. So much contained in that little four-letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable. Why is it every social gathering in one’s home ends up with people gathered in the kitchen? Given that reality let’s explore “5 Hot Trends in Kitchen Design.” “The Well-Stocked Bar” is a fun look at how to create a breathtaking in-home bar. If you need a little help bringing a new vision to life in your home, Local Experiences this month shares “Our Picks for Home Design in Mind.” Spring cleaning takes on a new meaning in “Non-Toxic Living,” where we provide easy solutions for a cleaner home. Meanwhile, “Simplify Your Life” taps into three local experts who offer advice on ways to simplify and organize this spring. Spending time at home means we want delicious and effortless meals. “A Simple Springtime Salad” is a great addition to your dinner rotation from local blogger, Cara Price. For more recipe ideas and healthy living tips check out Cara’s blog at thenourishedbodyandsoul.com. Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” “Home Away From Home” showcases a dreamy Broken Bow retreat courtesy of three local couples’ vision. Memories are waiting to be made in this beauty. We hope you are inspired by our Home issue to live your best lives at home and beyond! Cheers to Home and March!

Home Away From Home Three Local Couples Create A Dreamy Broken Bow Retreat
ARTICLE BY STEPHANIE HASBROUCK PHOTOGRAPHY BY ILONA JADE PHOTOGRAPHY
When friends Ilona and Andrey Gorokhovskiy; Jose and Alex Sanchez; and Trevor and Michelle Reed began building their dream Broken Bow, Okla., retreat, they wanted it to be an elegant destination that felt like home for all future guests. The three couples combined their talents to creating the perfect getaway. “Our vision was to build a modern luxury cabin,” Michelle says. “We wanted to keep all the amenities of a modern home, with the vibes of an all-wood cabin. It was a real challenge to make all of those design elements come together into a cohesive look.” Up for the challenge, the couples created an elegant cabin they call Lodger than Life that is bright and sophisticated yet highlights the natural beauty of its surroundings.

“When designing the cabin, we wanted it to feel big, grand … larger than life!” Jose says. “Thankfully, I think we’ve accomplished that with the design and finishing touches. From the exterior, you get that feeling as soon as you turn into the driveway. And when you walk through that front door, it’s actually even more grand than you expected.” Sunlight immediately welcomes visitors as they enter the great room. “The wall of windows feels like the main focal point of the cabin – from both the interior and exterior,” Andrey says. “The house is elevated to a level where you don’t see the street or driveway, but instead enjoy a beautiful scenery of trees.” “When you stay at such a beautiful location, you want to enjoy the natural beauty as much as possible,” Ilona says.

From the windows to the 1,000-square-foot covered deck to the stunning quartzite stone countertops and natural pine walls, Jose says, “All of the design elements in the home were intended to bring the beauty of the outdoors inside.” The cabin accommodates 14 – so Michelle says, “It’s definitely the perfect family retreat. With three king suites and a bunk room that sleeps eight, it’s great even for more than one family.” Each bedroom is cozy, yet sophisticated. “We wanted the rooms to feel like a relaxing escape with timeless beauty and comfortable elements so anyone could feel instantly at home.” And let’s not forget the bathrooms - each a spalike retreat. “Who says that a cabin can’t be luxurious?” Alex says. “Whether you’re spending the day at the lake or go hiking, it’s so nice to be able to come home, relax and freshen up in one of our three rainfall showers. “Each king ensuite has its own elegant design with unique features … All the tiles and materials used were chosen to complement and in ways mimic many of the natural beautiful elements found in the Broken Bow area - from the pebbles found in the streams to the many sparkling quartz rocks one can find all over that area. Bringing the outside in was really important to us.” Another important goal of the group was making Lodger than Life a “low-tox” destination. In keeping with the all-natural theme, the cabin utilizes organic, fragrance-free, plant-based cleaners so it’s friendly to those with sensitivities. “On top of that, we chose organic linens, including our luxuriously soft bamboo sheets and spa-like bath towels. The laundry detergent we use is also natural and plant-based so that it’s gentle on the skin,” she says. “We provide guests with a Berkey water filter to use for drinking water.” “When planning a vision for the cabin, a lowtoxic approach was a big deal to us. And we knew it would be a big deal to the growing population of chemical-conscious communities around North Texas,” Andrey says. “We hope to be a safe haven for many families wanting peace of mind about these essential everyday details.” CONTINUED >

Above all else, the couples say they hope the cabin feels like home to its future guests. “Something that makes this cabin special is the three families that came together to bring it about,” Trevor says. “And unlike most cabins out there, we are a family-owned cabin, not just a management company, so we designed it specifically with families in mind. We have pack n’ plays, highchairs, baby gates and toys for little ones. Lots of board games, air hockey, foosball, a digital game table, cornhole and shuffleboard for teens and adults. We plan to have outdoor activities for the kids with treasure hunts and geocaching up on the hillside trails. Adventure kits are in the works that guests can add on, so kids can explore the outdoors with binoculars and other fun gadgets. We want this cabin and the experience of staying here to be exciting and magical every time,” he says. “We want our guests to truly feel like it’s their home away from home. One of our priorities was comfort … We hope our cabin is a place for people to feel relaxed, refreshed and inspired.” For more information on Lodger that Life, visit LodgerThanLife.com and follow @LodgerThanLifeOK on Instagram and Facebook.com/LodgerThanLifeOK. Non-Toxic Living Simple Solutions for a Cleaner Home
ARTICLE BY STEPHANIE HASBROUCK PHOTOGRAPHY CONTRIBUTED
Home sweet home – often referred to as a “safe haven.” But did you know that everyday products we use can introduce toxins into the air we breathe, the clothes we wear, the surfaces we touch and the foods we eat? Luckily, there are steps we can take to clean up our act – and our home.
FORGET THE CHEMICAL AIR “FRESHENERS”
Say goodbye to those plug-ins and paraffin wax candles. Instead, opt for clean-burning candles that incorporate natural fragrances and plant-based waxes like soy, coconut and beeswax. Or diffuse pure essential oils.
SWITCH TO NON-TOXIC CLEANERS
Perhaps the easiest first step to creating a healthier home is simply switching to non-toxic cleaners. Products like Branch Basics, ECOS, Bon Ami and Dr. Bronner’s are just a few of many effective natural cleaners on the market. Or – simply make your own. A 50/50 solution of water and white vinegar with a few drops of pure orange or lemon essential oil make a tried and true all-purpose cleaner.

COOK CLEANER
If you have non-stick cookware that pre-dates 2006, there is a good chance it may contain PFOA chemicals. These chemicals can be released into foods and even into the air during the cooking process. PFOA has been linked to cancer, liver damage, thyroid disease and more health concerns. Replace those outdated pans with quality ceramic-coated, cast iron or stainless-steel cookware.
BREATHE FRESHER AIR CW Service Pros offers homeowners multiple ways to detoxify their surroundings. The company’s progressive Air Scrubber by Aerus system is an advanced air and surface purification technology that has been proven to reduce as much as 99% of contaminants, including viruses, bacteria, fungi and molds. The system is installed directly into existing ductwork and provides round-the-clock air purification by propelling disinfecting molecules into the air that neutralize microbes both in the air and when they land on surfaces.
DITCH THE LAUNDRY DETERGENT
CW Service Pros’ Laundry Pro 2.0 system infuses the cold water in your washing machine with hydrogen and oxygen-based oxidizing molecules that lift dirt and grime particles from cloth fibers leaving clothes clean, bright, fresh and softer without the residue and chemicals that laundry detergents leave behind. That’s right – clean clothes without detergent! That’s not only non-toxic – it’s budget friendly.

SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE ARTICLE BY STEPHANIE HASBROUCK PHOTOGRAPHY CONTRIBUTED
WE ASKED THREE LOCAL EXPERTS TO OFFER ADVICE ON WAYS TO SIMPLIFY AND ORGANIZE THIS SPRING
Simplify Your Surroundings Debbie Sardone, President of Buckets & Bows Maid Service bucketsandbows.com WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO DECLUTTER ONE’S HOME? Clutter can affect your anxiety levels, sleep and your ability to focus. The fastest way to deal with clutter is one room at a time and then one area at a time. Approach decluttering using prioritization and blocks of time and effort: “Saturday I will declutter the dining room. Then next week I will declutter the laundry room.” Enjoy the satisfaction of one entire area or room completed at a time and then pick a date and time to do the next section or room.
HOW CAN INDIVIDUALS MAINTAIN A TIDY HOME? Here’s a few things to get you started on having a neat and nice space to live in year-round: 1. Start by making your bed (even if it’s sloppy, that’s okay) - it literally takes less than one minute but makes the whole job feel “done.” 2. Involve the whole family in a 15-minute “pick up and put up” run through before bedtime. 3. Give yourself permission to do just one load of laundry per day. It will all be done by Saturday! 4. Keep a bottle of glass cleaner under every sink so you can do a quick spritz and wipe as needed on toilets, mirrors and countertops. 5. Be happy with “good enough.” It’s better than it was. Done is better than perfect.

DO YOU BELIEVE IT’S GOOD TO SIMPLIFY ONE’S MEAL PLAN? Simplification is always a good idea when changing any habit, including nutrition habits. Starting with a simplified meal plan helps a person not become too overwhelmed by a change. When someone is overwhelmed by change, they are more susceptible to give up on their decision to make the change. Simplification is also great for saving time and money Keeping food simple will save time because you don’t need to spend time pouring over recipes or spend money on extra spices and ingredients.
HOW DO WE GO BACK TO THE BASICS WHEN IT COMES TO EATING?
Simplify Your Meals Cara Price, Nutrition Coach, CrossFit L1 Trainer and Blogger thenourishedbodyandsoul.com
The basics are the easiest things to do. I tell my clients to remember three things when making nutritional decisions: 1. If it walked, grew, swam or flew, it’s safe to eat. 2. If you knew what the food item was when you were in kindergarten, eat it. If you need to google it to find out what it is, don’t. 3. Keep any packaged items to five ingredients or less. Simplify Your Schedule Dr. Michael Messina, Licensed Clinical Psychologist Dr. Messina & Associates, drmessina.com DOES SPRING CLEANING EXTEND TO ALL ASPECTS OF LIFE? Spring cleaning can and should extend beyond our physical belongings to all areas of life. Decluttering can help us create more space for what matters most, allowing us to lead happier, more fulfilling lives. So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, try taking a few moments to do some “spring cleaning” in your own life. You may be surprised at the results!
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO SIMPLIFY ONE’S SCHEDULE TO MAKE TIME FOR SELF-CARE? Simplifying your schedule can lead to many benefits. You’ll have more time for yourself, allowing you to engage in activities that bring you joy and help you relax. You’ll also have more time to pursue hobbies or interests that you may have been neglecting. By simplifying your schedule, you can increase productivity and focus on the most important tasks.
WHAT DOES SELF-CARE LOOK LIKE TO YOU? Examples of self-care can include things like meditating, going for a walk, reading a book, listening to music, doing yoga or any other activities that help you relax and de-stress. It can also involve engaging in creative activities such as painting, drawing, writing or crafting. Self-care can also mean giving yourself some time away from your everyday life by taking a break and doing something for yourself that makes you feel fulfilled. Ultimately, what self-care looks like to you is entirely up to you. Find activities that help you relax, recharge and reconnect with yourself so that you can lead a healthier and happier life.

Ever ything you need to know to create a breathtaking in-home bar
Having a home bar is cool. It is, however, not cool if the only thing you can offer guests is a couple of dusty bottles of liquor that have been there for years. What you have in your home bar can make or break your gathering, however informal it may be. A well-rounded bar should include at least one bottle of each of the six base liquors, which are the foundation for the majority of cocktails. Stocking a nice selection of these will ensure you can mix up almost any cocktail on a whim. If you feel like a whiskey cocktail tonight, you’ll be ready. When a guest asks for a brandy, gin, rum or tequila-based libation, you’ll be prepared to grab your shaker and mix up a drink.
VODK A Vodka has a clean, transparent flavor and is used for more cocktails than any other distilled spirit. Stock at least one “fifth” bottle of vodka, but opt for a handle (1.75 liters) if you like to entertain. • A good solid option like Titos is ideal for tall drinks like the screwdriver and bloody mary. • If you enjoy a vodka martini, spend a little extra for a top-shelf bottle as well. • Consider stocking a couple of flavored vodkas. In a traditional bar, citrus and vanilla vodkas are the trusted standbys. suggested glassware:

WHISKEY
RUM
A well-stocked bar has at least two bottles of rum. • A light rum will be your workhorse for most cocktails, from the tropical daiquiri to the timeless mojito. • As a secondary rum, take your pick of aged, dark or spiced rum. suggested glassware:
GIN
Gin can be quite floral and botanical depending on the brand, since it is made from very botanicalforward juniper berries. • If you aren’t an aficionado, a good bottle of a London dry gin is recommended. This is the most versatile and can work in everything from a gin and tonic to a dry martini. • From there, you can get adventurous - every brand is different and a wide array of flavors is available. suggested glassware:
TEQUIL A Tequila’s quality can vary drastically, so make sure to test them out before purchasing. It’s the key to the ever-loved margarita, though there are other fascinating tequila cocktails to explore as well. Generally, you’ll want to stock at least one nice tequila. • The most versatile style is blanco (or silver) tequila, and it’s the best option for a one-tequila bar. • For a little upgrade, add a slightly aged reposado as well. suggested glassware:
30
H AP PY H OU R | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
This is where things get complicated. Each whiskey has its own style and characteristics. In general, two bottles are a good start - but you can always add more. • For the most versatility, stock a bourbon and Canadian whisky. The bourbon will give you that robust whiskey flavor and the Canadian blends tend to be very smooth. • Rye whiskey is a great choice for everyday mixed drinks. Though some drinkers find it too spicy, rye is excellent in almost any cocktail that calls for a generic whiskey. If you enjoy classic cocktails, give rye a try for an authentic taste. • A bottle of Irish whiskey and a decent blended scotch are good complements to any bar. While they make excellent cocktails, they’re not as common or as versatile as the other styles. suggested glassware:
WHERE TO STOCK YOU R BA R : A well-stocked bar should include local wines and spirits. Luckily, our area is home to many wonderful wineries and the incomparable BENDT Distilling Company.
• Bull Lion Ranch Winery 530 S. Main Street, Grapevine bullliionranch.com
• Delaney Vineyards • Bingham Family Vineyards 620 Main Street, Grapevine binghamfamilyvineyards.com

• Cross Timbers Winery 805 N. Main Street, Grapevine crosstimberswinery.com
LIQUEUR S
Liqueurs are often used as flavoring agents that define a cocktail. On occasion, they are the only distilled spirits in a drink. Liqueurs come in every flavor you could want and a bottle can last quite a long time. Start with the basics and gradually add to your stock as you see fit. Amaretto: The almond-flavored liqueur is used in both fancy and casual cocktails. • Coffee Liqueur: White Russians and countless other cocktails rely on a bottle like Kahlúa. • Dry and Sweet Vermouth: Technically, these are fortified wines, but they’re essential for martinis. • Irish Cream Liqueur: Baileys is a popular brand, though there are others worth checking out. You can also stock another cream liqueur, such as RumChata instead. • Orange Liqueur: Used in countless cocktails, this one’s invaluable. Options include curaçao, triple sec, Cointreau, and Grand Marnier. suggested glassware: MAR CH 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/C RO S ST I M BE R S

3 Hot Trends
ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY BY J.A. STENGER PHOTOGRAPHY
in Kitchen Design
A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone. When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.
TAKING THE COUNTER MATERIAL UP THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.
WARMING UP THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.
CONTRAST, CONTRAST, CONTRAST! From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.

Brooke’s Pro Tip: I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material. Rankings considered advisors with a minimum of seven years financial services experience, who have been employed at their current firm for at least one year. The Top 1,200 award included top advisors in each state, with the number of ranking spots determined by each state’s population and wealth. For both awards, other quantitative and qualitative measures include assets under management, revenues generated by advisors for their firms, and the quality of the advisors’ practices, regulatory records, internal company documents, and data provided by the advisors themselves.
