CyberSecurity Tip of the Month!

Sometimes You Don’t Want the Dots to Connect

Tracking dots and such as Apple Airtags are becoming a tool of choice to track and steal property.

On a recent ride-along with my brother, a local police officer, we discussed novel ways tech-savvy criminals exploit technology. A new trend is perpetrators misusing tracking devices, like Apple AirTags, to track and steal.

Here are some quick tips that should help you avoid becoming a victim of tracker dot abuse:

Secure Your Ride – Regularly inspect your vehicle, even underneath, to detect hidden trackers like AirTags or Tiles.

Check Your Phone – Utilize the Apple FindMy app to scan for suspicious devices. Stay vigilant and heed alerts promptly.

Be Aware – Stay alert to your surroundings and remain attuned to both your environment and smartphone notifications.

Your safety matters, and at M3 Networks, we're dedicated to safeguarding your digital life.

If you'd like to chat about cybersecurity or tech, you can reach me by text/call at 817-934-1565.

It’s Fall Y’all!

Happy Fall Friends!

It’s finally that time of the year to relish the changing of seasons, upcoming holidays and festive foods to savor with our loved ones.

Now that October has arrived, we can get down to the business of fall decorating and autumn-inspired dishes or meals and fuzzy blankets to warm our hearts and bring us closer together.

Our hope is that this month’s issue will inspire you to throw a little fall on your front porch, dance a little polka at your local Oktoberfest, clink glasses to welcome in the autumn air and gather up some cans for our friends at Christian Community Action or The North Texas Food Bank to give to those in serious need. We are grateful for each of you and appreciate you diving in every month to learn about your neighbors and local businesses making a difference.

Grab a cozy blanket, light a candle and enjoy the inspiring stories and people in our community!   Blessings!

Oktoberfest: The 233 Year Wedding Reception

Modeled after that wedding reception 233 years ago, we call it Oktoberfest.

A horse race, a traveling carnival, untold gallons of warm beer and close to 30,000 fine citizens of Munich. It’s how the absurdly wealthy royalty married back in 1810 in Munich, Bavaria. The lucky couple that day on 12 October were Crown Prince Ludwig and his lovely Princess Therese. I can’t vouch for the marriage but it is a fact that the festivities are still going on around the world. Modeled after that wedding reception 233 years ago, we call it Oktoberfest. Whether you participate in the festival in your own town, the one in

Cincinnati that draws up to 700,000 every year, or you fly to Munich and rub shoulders (and huge beer mugs) with six million new friends from around the world, one thing is the same: Fun. Fun for the family and anyone else who shows up.

The locals in Munich were so impressed with their first Oktoberfest that they decided to do it again the following year in 1811. In that year, managers added a show to promote Bavarian agriculture. Agriculture is, after all, what produces all those hops, barley and

other cereals to fill the vats that turn out beer. A couple of years later, a little dust-up that your kids may have read about —the Napoleonic Wars — forced the cancellation of Oktoberfest. After this, the festival grew steadily from year to year with new features like bowling alleys, swings, competitive tree climbing and other things that amaze kids and frighten parents. In 1819, the city fathers of Munich took over management and set out to upgrade the event, in part by proclaiming it an annual affair and by introducing more benches to make beer drinking easier and carnival booths with prizes ranging from silver to porcelain and jewelry.

But all hasn’t been easy for the original — some say “only” — Oktoberfest. In fact, its history includes a myriad of cancellations and adjustments due to a cholera epidemic (1854), the Austro-Prussian War (1866, again in 1870) and another cholera epidemic (1873). But there was light! Literally. In 1880, electric light illuminated more than 400 booths and tents. Booths selling real bratwurst opened and the first beer was sold in glass mugs in 1882. At the 100th anniversary of Oktoberfest in 1910, an estimated 35,000 gallons of beer were consumed. Three years later, the largest pavilion ever built, the Braurosl, was opened to accommodate around 12,000 people. But from 1914 to 1918, the Great War (sometimes referred to as WWI) suspended the festival. The politics of the moment following

the Great War allowed the replacement of Oktoberfest with something called Kleineres Herbstfest. That can translate to something like “smaller autumn celebration.” But the penalties of warfare are lasting and in 1923 and 1924, Oktoberfest was canceled as a result of the hyperinflation. World War II, stopped all Oktoberfest festivities. After the war in Europe, from 1946 to 1948, Munich celebrated only “Autumn Fest.” Even the sale of real Oktoberfest beer, much stronger than normal beer, was not permitted. Munich was not under Communist occupation after the war, but just about anyone who lives to rule other people will be sure that no one gets 2% drunker than anyone else.

Today, your local Oktoberfest may not include horse racing, tree climbing or 16 pairs of cute little kids dressed in costumes marching to the music that seems to be everywhere. All those were big draws in the 1800s, not so much in 2023. You are more likely to find amusement rides, games of chance — if not skill — and more than 2 kinds of sausages. Looking ahead to this year’s Oktoberfest, it is highly unlikely that you and your group will be held up by Prussian soldiers, knocked out by a bout of cholera or trampled by runaway racehorses. But the odds are great that you will eat too much, drink too much, and wear yourself out at the games and rides. If your borough doesn’t have the rides, plan to fly to Munich next year.

Sip + Savor: Underneath the Drywall

LOCAL LIMELIGHT | FOOD + BEVERAGE
THIS FAMILY-OWNED LOCAL RESTAURANT IS MORE THAN A MEAT AND POTATOES KIND OF BUSINESS. ARTICLE BY MALLORY MCKEEVER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SIP + SAVOR 20

It started with a no. Scott refused to buy wine from Jenn, his sales rep seeking a commission for another sale. “He turned me down, ‘Nope, I'm not going to buy any of this.’ I was devastated.” But she persisted. “I came back, won him over and got his business,” her eyes trail up to the light fixtures above. “He asked me on a date a year later and we've been together ever since.”

For 8 years now, Flower Mound has been the home of husband and wife team Jenn and Scott Sharrer and their 4 kids. In November 2022, Sip + Savor, their restaurant and “leap of faith”, opened. “We like to joke that I'm the Sip and he's the Savor. We think it's funny because it genuinely works. I literally do all of the wine and he does all of the food. And we just have so much fun doing it together.” And you can tell too. The pure heart, that

earnest core behind this place beams out of everything from the lighting to the menu to Jenn herself. “Working with my husband has been the biggest blessing,” she says. “We both have a say in it, so caring as much as we do goes a lot further. And I think the staff feels it too. You will see me on the floor scrubbing or taking plates off the tables and my husband doing the same thing. I want to be in the thick of it with the team.”

A beloved in the community, the heart of Sip + Savor exceeds its location on Shoal Creek in Highland Village and exists as more than a restaurant and more than a place to Sip and Savor foods inspired by far-off places. “It's not just a restaurant,” Jenn says firmly, “this is our mission field. People ask, “What's different? It's so different in this restaurant. Why is that?”. The reply? Because of Jesus. CONTINUED >

21 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/CROSSTIMBERS OCTOBER 2023

Valley Creek, their church home of 4 years now, has been a catalyst, if not the sole reason, Sip + Savor is here today, Jenn says. After years of praying and searching for a location for a restaurant, “we finally got the yes.” As construction began, the couple reached out to their church asking for blessings and prayers to encompass this new journey. “We asked for everyone to show up and write scripture on the walls. We thought we'd get maybe 20 people,” Jenn says. “We had over 200 people come in.” Her hand gestures to the beautifully textured ivory wall beside her, “Underneath all the drywall is scripture from our church and our community.”

The menu itself is a result of the heart behind this restaurant. With each intentional step, it becomes so much more clear that it is more than Jenn and Scott’s way of putting food on the table, but their passion, a lifelong dream, a leap of faith and their mission field. The menu, inspired by Northern California, sings many notes. Emerging from a sea of Texas barbecue that covers our Lone Star state, Sip + Savor serves plates of bright colors. “We're not a meat and potatoes kind of business,” Jenn explains. “We are fresh and clean, but we're also very colorful.” She breaks down a few of their dishes, like the sea bass and the calamari starter, Fritto Misto. What goes into every dish, Jenn says, “is just this brightness with so many golden flavors. You're just like, ‘What is that?’” From the sauces that provide color to the bed of black quinoa that provides contrast to the vivid peppadew peppers and goat cheese blended with a more traditional marinara, it all creates a story reflecting the brilliance of what is underneath the drywall.

THE MAGIC OF DECORATING YOUR PORCH FOR FALL

Fall has finally arrived and you can almost hear the collective sigh of North Texans who are relieved to be on the other side of extreme heat! With this weather change comes cozy fashions, comfort foods, outdoor activities and decorating. Fall is the perfect time to bring character and beauty into your home with seasonal textures and colors. Bringing the splendor of fall into your home is a popular way to welcome the new season. “But don’t forget about the porch!” say best friends Shelby Goldstein and Gina Green, owners and creators of My Porch Fairies.

If the kitchen is the heart of the home, then the porch is its first impression. Decorating a porch for fall is your home’s chance to make a statement that welcomes family and friends as they come and go for all the upcoming holidays. Shelby and Gina combine their love of gathering with their flair for decorating to help transform your porch into a beautiful space for fall while also boosting your home’s curb appeal at the same time. They even say that a decorated porch is infectious - how fun to get the neighborhood involved!

“We have always appreciated fall decorating and enjoyed seeing pumpkins on porches. That is when the spark came - everyone in Texas has a porchwhy couldn’t we do that? Realizing that some people have no time or no ideas, it might not be a priority for them. That is where we swoop in and help,” share Shelby and Gina. These two porch fairies pride themselves on their business model to first create a relationship

with each client. After a short visit and a look around your space, they will then get to know you - your color choices, your style, your preferences. Then the magic begins!

Using an inspiration point such as a rocker, planter, pillow, or wreath - the Porch Fairies can work with your special inspiration piece and go from special to spectacular by adding and embellishing that single item. They can create with what you already have or make suggestions on purchases to transform your porch into a work of art. Using a local source, Autumn Road at Blue Moon Creek, for pumpkins and decorating with items you already own allows for a wide cost range from budget-friendly to totally upscale. It is also an easy transition from fall to Halloween to keep decorating simple and fun throughout the entire season.

“We love to add pops of color and make it punchy! We can also work with pictures you may have found on the internet.” The more specific a client is, the more it can become an expression of your personal style. Both ladies even admit to having trouble falling asleep after seeing a porch because the fun ideas just won’t stop coming!

And don’t forget about the back porch. The ladies remind us that your back porch is a wonderful extension of your living room. It is the perfect place to gather in the cool weather for a savory fall meal or tailgate food while watching the big game. The Porch Fairies can even offer a snack station to spoil your hard-working delivery people when they visit.

When asked what makes the Porch Fairies unique, Shelby and Gina both agreed that they work very hard to make clients happy. Many of their clients become friends because the love they have for what they do is simply contagious. “We are pleasers and we enjoy the relationships we have developed

You can contact these wonderful porch fairies through the Instagram account My Porch Fairies. Decorating is not limited to fall. Consider their art for Christmas, winter, spring, a birthday, a baby shower, Easter, Arbor Day (who knows?) or simply for a year-round refresh to have the most eye-catching porch on the block! The joys of laughing together with friends and family are all included in the wonderful transformation.

through our time with clients. As a matter of fact, this doesn’t work at all. It’s just really fun. And the absolute best part is the reveal! We chose the name, My Porch Fairies, because we really enjoy creating a porch when the client is away from home. Then they drive up and POOF! - quite like the big reveals on the decorating reality shows.” Laughing, Shelby and Gina share how

some clients who were home were asked to stay inside and cover the doorbell. There truly are so few surprises in life, but there is power in the POOF! “We love feedback. After we have decorated a porch, we will wait for a text from the homeowner or call each other asking, ‘Did you hear anything yet?’” Just like kids waiting for Christmas morning.

SERVING THE COMMUNITY, NOT JUST THE CUSTOMER, WITH CW SERVICE PROS

A PURPOSE BEYOND BUSINESS

Serving the community is incorporated into what CW Service Pros does, both every day and during their annual food drive. “For almost 25 years now, [we have] been established in the community,” says Karen Edmonds of CW Service Pros. And now, in 2023, their food drive kicks off for another year, now a regular event for them. Karen describes it as only a part of their way of giving back to the clients and the community simultaneously. “I believe we can work together as a community to make a difference in the lives of people in need.”

“Several years ago,” says Karen, “We had an employee who also had a heart for helping feed the hungry, especially the homeless in the area. The food drive began as a way to assist in her efforts to help others who were less fortunate. Because of the great success of the event, we chose to continue this annually.”

“It [was] a great way for the employees to get involved and reach out beyond themselves to help others.” Karen has always had a heart for serving and, by her own admission, she is used to wearing several hats and generally going the extra mile to achieve much. Karen graduated from UNT with a BBA in Management, moved on to working with CompUSA and then Custom Crete. While juggling a career in real estate and having a newborn, Karen split her time between her own career and working to help the family-owned business. “Becoming stretched too thin,” she says, “I had to make a choice

and chose to come on full-time with CW Service Pros.” At the time, it was called C&W Plumbing. Now she operates as Office Manager, incorporating Human Resources, IT, Marketing and Accounting Manager all into this role. And yet, somehow she finds time to get involved in the community beyond the business. From her experiences in the Lantana Women’s League, Rock Point Church’s Feed the Hunger and Highland Village and Flower Mound Women’s Clubs, “I have a strong desire to help the community when I am able,” she explains.

The food drive works through all the employees at CW Service Pros. When technicians are out on the job, they ask clients for non-perishable food donations. In exchange for the donation, the customer will receive a discount on the work CW Service Pros provides. All the donations go directly to the CCA or the NTX Food Bank. Clients can also donate to the company directly and CW Service Pros will be happy to buy requested supplies for the food bank they are supporting.

“We are A+ rated with the BBB (Better Business Bureau) and have over 15k 5-star reviews from our clients,” Karen explains, proud of the service that CW Service Pros is known for. “But I encourage you to get involved. No matter if you choose to support through working with CW Service Pros or make a donation directly to your local food bank.” Karen explains how her purpose goes beyond business and extends to fostering a community that helps each other, “With the help of the community, we can change the lives and future of the hurting in our area.”
