Forbes Best-in-State Wealth Advisors ranking was developed by SHOOK Research and is based on in-person, virtual, and telephone due diligence meetings to measure best practices; also considered are: client retention, industry experience, credentials, review of compliance records, firm nominations; and quantitative criteria, such as: assets under management and revenue generated for their firms. “The masculine colors, wood tones and textures add sophistication for a very manly vibe.”

When Mandy Lane, owner of Lane Home Design, was asked to remodel a client’s home office, she proved that spaces for “him” can be both beautiful and masculine. “The client’s wishes were to have an updated, modern, yet masculine office with a more functional flow to the space,” Mandy says. The client also wished to incorporate elements that reflected her husband’s interests, which included Texas A&M University, hunting and golf. “In working with the school colors of Texas A&M, I knew we really needed something to compliment maroon and white, therefore we landed on the perfect shade of grey for the walls,” Mandy says. “We were going for a moody, masculine space that felt fresh and updated with a slight modern edge.” Mandy says she enjoys bringing in eclectic pieces to add interest to her spaces. “Mixing old with the new is always ‘in’ in my opinion. It’s fun to bring in brand new pieces that are current and fresh with items that reflect the individual,” she says. Then result: a sophisticated and functional home office that ref lects the life of the homeowner. “The intention was absolutely to tell the story of the occupant. This office space reflects my client in every way, from the very personal items of his college days to touches of items related to his hobbies of today – golf and hunting,” Mandy says. “The masculine colors, wood tones and textures add sophistication for a very manly vibe.” CONTINUED >

MANDY LANE’S TIPS FOR

Creating the Perfect Home Office Let the space reflect who you are. Think about key items you really want to incorporate in the room and add them. The space should tell your story.

Embrace the eclectic. Mix old and new while repeating the main theme. This creates interest and balance.

Texture is important. Repeat variations of the main colors throughout the space, but also layer in different textures and tones throughout.

Add greenery. It’s always a good idea to bring in greenery to practically any space to soften the feel. An added bonus: green plants help cleanse the air!

THOMAS WHITE OCCUPATION: Executive Director of the Lewisville Education Foundation Thomas White grew up in the Lewisville ISD school system. He attended Timber Creek Elementary, Lamar Middle and Marcus High schools. He returned to his beloved school system in 2019 to lead the Education Foundation, which supports the educational goals of LISD’s students and teachers. “I really enjoy what I do to help students and teachers fulfill their potential and simply have the best possible educational experience within LISD,” he says. “I wear many hats to accomplish that – from raising money for scholarships and grants to introducing community and business partners to the outstanding work happening in the district.” Since 1990, LEF has awarded almost $6 million in scholarships, grants and special programs, Thomas says. “While that is our primary mission – to provide resources for LISD students and staff – I also like to think we create positive advocacy for everyone involved in public education.” Thomas lives in Flower Mound with his wife Tara and children, Abigail and Reid.

JA M E S CHILDERS OCCUPATION: Flower Mound Town Manager

26

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE

James W. Childers began his professional career in Flower Mound and now is back after being named Town Manager this past year. “The best way I can describe my role to the uninitiated is to think of the Town Manager like a CEO of a private company and the Town Council as the board of directors. They set policy, and I work with a great staff of 680-plus employees to execute that policy direction.” James says the most rewarding aspect of his position is serving the public. “I love that I work with a great team to positively impact the lives of our residents on a daily basis. Public Safety, infrastructure, quality of life … there’s so much that we do,” he says. “I also like working with the Council and community to help realize strategic goals and visioning for the future.” James is no stranger to Town Management. In fact, it tends to run in the family. “I’m a second-generation City Manager,” he explains. “My father, Rickey was a long-time City Manager, as was my late uncle, Terry.” James and his wife Mishawn are in the process of moving to Flower Mound. The couple has four children, Alexis, Jalyn, Justus and London.

GARY LEWIS OCCUPATION: Area President for Denton County at Bank of the West Gary Lewis has garnered much success in the banking industry. He serves as Area President for Denton County at Bank of the West and helped open and organize United Community Bank in Highland Village. But it is his work in the community that has earned him the distinguished honor of 2021 Citizen of the Year. “This was a surprise and an honor,” he says. “The Flower Mound, Highland Village and Lewisville area has given so much to myself and family. The least we can do is give back every way we can. “I have never tried to be active in the community just to win business. It simply makes your community stronger and business better when you have active community volunteers.” Locally, Gary has served on the local boards of PediPlace, Medical City Lewisville, the Lewisville Noon Rotary and the Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce. He also was Chairman of the Lewisville Area Chamber of Commerce. In addition, Gary serves on the boards of the international organizations Serving Him and Life Romania. “Both Serving Him and Life Romania are Christian organizations and have focused all services this year on Ukraine,” he says. Gary lives in Lantana with his wife Kay. The couple has two children, Courtney, who is married to Ryan; and Chase; and two grandchildren, Tanner and Ella. CONTINUED >

ARTURO ORTEGA OCCUPATION: Music Director of the Voices of Flower Mound

Arturo Ortega was drawn to music at a young age. “I was that odd kid that listened rapturously to classical music recordings and would even compare renditions of certain pieces,” he says. “It’s been a lifelong love affair with music.” That love of music eventually led Arturo to musical ventures around the world, including becoming the Music Director of the Voices of Flower Mound. “I’ve made it my primary goal to grow the organization and its visibility to make it amongst the most prominent musical organizations in the metroplex,” he says. Arturo says community support for the organization has grown tremendously since he became director. “Our audiences have grown by leaps and bounds – to the point that it doesn’t surprise us to have sold-out concerts,” he says. “By and large, new audiences are invited by others who have attended a concert, and they often exclaim, ‘Wow! I had no idea! I’ll never miss a concert again!’ Then they almost always bring more people to the next one. It has spread like wildfire. That is certainly rewarding to see.” In addition to his work with the Voices of Flower Mound, Arturo is the Music Director of the Robson Ranch Choir and orchestra director at Trietsch Memorial United Methodist Church. He recently received the Lewisville Masonic Lodge’s Community Builder Award in recognition of his work in the community.

MEN’S WORKOUT GROUP STRENGTHENS MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT

Each week, men across the community gather in local parks to begin their days with a workout. But unlike the gym or other fitness classes, these free workout sessions are designed to strengthen mind, body and spirit. F3 Flower Mound is part of F3 Nation, an international network that includes 3,204 free, peer-led workouts for men in 242 regions with the mission to plant, grow and serve small groups and cultivate leadership. F3 stands for fitness, fellowship and faith. F3 Flower Mound holds six weekly workouts and has served more than 200 men. Workouts are outdoors, rain or shine; always free; and open to men of all faiths All participants, or PAX as they are called, are given a nickname at the first workout they attend. “Each name is representative of something about the man, but also gives him something to grow into,” says David Skelton, co-founder of F3 Flower Mound. David is an F3 Regional Nantan, an Apache title meaning spokesperson or leader. He and Drew Larson began the local chapter of F3 in 2019.

David was inspired to begin the Flower Mound chapter after attending F3 when he lived in Birmingham, Ala. “At the time I was 32 or 33 years old and dealing with a lot of stress at work and at home,” he says. “While I had been athletic in college, I had fallen out of shape and put on a significant amount of weight. My doctor was close to putting me on cholesterol medicine and then a friend of mine invited me to attend a workout … In that first workout I couldn’t do 10 pushups or run a mile … After a couple of weeks, I started going three days a week. A couple of weeks later I was going six days a week. I started F3 in January and by that June I was doing over 400 push-ups a day.” David says that F3 not only transformed his body, but it also gave him a sense of community. “The biggest change was in the camaraderie I found with the other men in the group. I was not only getting better physically, but also mentally, emotionally and spiritually,” he says. “I’ve met some of my best friends in F3, and you couldn’t pay me to stop now.” Like David, Drew was advised by a friend to join an F3 group. On his 40th birthday, he decided to make the trek to Dallas to his first F3 workout. He was inspired to begin a local chapter, but in order to do so he was required to attend three workouts. “Luckily, the Dallas guys were aware of a local Flower Mound resident who had just moved from F3 Alabama and was interested in starting a region. And that’s when I was introduced to David “Rocket Man” Skelton,” Drew says. “With David’s experience and my connections, we were the perfect match.” Drew became recruitment leader of F3 Flower Mound. “Soon thereafter, other leaders started to arrive and help to build F3 Flower Mound to the thriving network it is today,” he says. Those leaders include Fitness Captain David Matthews; Fellowship Lead Brandon Piner; Faith Lead Adam Tarplee; Communications Lead Josh Schult; and Workout Leads Ramon Santillan, Keegan McConnell, Tom Halter and Tony Bowen. The 45-minute, bootcamp-style F3 workouts include jumping jacks, jogging, push-ups and burpees.

“Sometimes weights are incorporated by using cinder blocks or bricks, we affectionately refer to as ‘coupons,’” Drew says. “One of our mottos is, ‘Leave no man behind; leave no man where you found him.’ As such, all of the workouts are designed so that all of the men can be together and perform at their own best,” he explains. “It’s you versus you out there, as that’s the only competition that matters.” Each workout concludes with a Circle of Trust. “This is a time for men to lay out anything that is on their hearts to their brothers in confidence,” David says. This element of trust and brotherhood sets F3 apart from other workouts and has made a lasting impact on all who participate. “For some men, F3 is literally a life saver,” Drew says. “I love you so much.” It’s one of Austin’s many remarkable and Instagrammable street murals but is also a love letter from locals and visitors alike who adore this “weird” and wonderful city in the South. The capital city of Texas is best known for having a personality of its own, one bursting with foodie and fashion finds, outdoor activities and “Austintatious” art creations, a booming sphere of pro sports experiences (we see you Formula 1 and Austin FC), and seven days a week of live music to boot. Did we mention it’s sunny nearly 300 days a year? It’s time to GET AWAY!

Photography Nathan Fluellen

This month, our City Lifestyle family of travel enthusiasts are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Austin to introduce an exclusively curated guide to this lively destination paired with a GIVEAWAY* opportunity to win a 2-night trip for two, with round trip airfare from American Airlines! It’s a big city with a small-town vibe brimming with rich cultural experiences that you must add to your wanderlust list to get your fill of margaritas, music and magnificent hospitality. Sunny most days of the year, Austin is recognized for a myriad of outdoor experiences which you can experience both in downtown Austin with scenic views of the skyline, as well as the surrounding area, including local treasure, Lady Bird Lake. Kayak, hike, bike and swim your way around the great Austin outdoors and enjoy one of the city’s most fantastic offerings that inspires people to get outside and play together.

When it comes to luxury accommodations, one of the most stunning hotels in Austin is the Commodore Perry Estate. This striking and historic property, once a 10,800-square-foot private mansion known to host Jazz era social extravaganzas, has been transformed into a modern and European-influenced spectacular resort now open to the public. Enjoy the architectural details, white-glove service, in-room Austin purveyor displays, and sophisticated, Southern-style meals. Speaking of meals, Austin is renowned for pleasing palates, with an exceptional restaurant scene, including barbecue and tacos as its true soul foods. Pair your tacos with queso and the musthave margaritas for an authentic Tex-Mex meal, or indulge in Austin’s quintessential barbecue. Austin’s slow-cooked, fall-off-the-bone brisket is a mouth-watering experience not to miss.

Ente r for a chance to win a geta way to Austin!

Read on for details.

Beyond barbecue and Tex-Mex is an entire mix of palate pleasers, from upscale Mediterranean and Asian to James Beard award-winning eateries. Geraldine’s inside Hotel Van Zandt is one of Austin’s iconic Rainey Street destinations. Equal parts restaurant, bar, rooftop and live music venue, Geraldine’s overlooks beautiful Lady Bird Lake and offers 4th f loor cabanas, a nightly concert lineup and a chef ’s contemporary menu. But first you should start your day with a cup of joe from Jo’s Coffee. Known for its iconic “i love you so much” muralclad exterior on South Congress Avenue, patrons come for the hot coffee, good food, cold beer and people-watching. As for Austin’s retail and local maker scene, the possibilities are endless and elevated. 2ND Street District boasts a mix of boutiques and shops to get your fashion fix and new home decor. For the gentlemen, embrace the full district experience, shopping League of Rebels, a bespoke experience with tailor made lifestyle wear, or Bonobos, the pioneers of custom fit chinos. Then enjoy a fresh shave from Austin’s premier Finley’s Barber Shop. For the women, shop local and find the perfect gift for yourself or someone you love from Luxe Apothetique, then drape yourself in artisan jewelry from Eliza Page before falling for the modern designs from Blu Dot. Following some retail therapy, head over to Upstairs Circus, a unique concept where DIY meets the bar; pick your project, enjoy a libation, create a masterpiece and be merry. Now let’s talk about live music. Whatever your scene is, you’ll find it here. With hundreds of live music venues, you have plenty of options available to soak up the sounds. ACL Live at The Moody Theater is home to the beloved Austin City Limits television show and hosts about 100 concerts year round. With its true passion for its unparalleled live music scene, its championing of local creators and small business owners, and its celebration of its enriching arts and culture offerings, Austin avows a personality all its own and should be next on your playlist. We love it so much!
