LIFESTYLE LETTER
Home is Where Our Story Begins March is our Home and Design issue. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what last regardless if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. Still, it is worthwhile to create a home environment that is comfortable and inviting as the backdrop to your life. This month we go about showing you tips on just how to accomplish this. Emmy award winning tv host and chef, Daphne Oz spoke to our City Lifestyle editors recently. The New York Times bestselling author shares how to easily pull off “Beautiful Evenings at Home,” when we entertain by offering simple foods that are tasty, elegant and healthy. In “Heart of the Home,” Alisa Popelka, founder and principal interior designer of Alisa Cristine Interiors, breathes new life into a dated kitchen. “Suburban Jungle” has us catching up with another local guru, Dana Luce of Calloway's. Dana offers advice on creating a home for happy houseplants. “Local Experiences” this month is all about Home Décor & Design. We point you to some fabulous home markets and home & garden shows. Plus, check out our list of professionals to help you reimagine, revamp, and remodel your spaces this spring. Check out our “Spring Break Adventure List,” for activities that will keep young minds active during their time off from school. And, Editor Stephanie Hasbrouck, takes a field trip to “Southfork Trade Days,” where she visits the iconic Dallas landmark that is the new home to the beloved Third Monday Trade Days. “Journey to Dream Honored,” shares how this important local non-profit received an inaugural Atria Impact Award and $5,000, thanks to the nomination by Shelly Dodge, local owner of Visionary Financial. Amazing! From our home to yours, we wish you love, peace and happiness.

One of the best ways to add color, dimension and a bit of happiness to the home is to incorporate houseplants. Research has shown the indoor plants can purify the air, reduce stress and improve focus. “I consider houseplants essential components for mental and physical health,” says Dana Luse, Allied Manager of Calloway’s Flower Mound. “Plants are able to change the carbon dioxide we exhale into oxygen through photosynthesis. The more oxygen we breathe means more oxygen for our blood to deliver to our cells.” For those who find the idea of keeping houseplants alive a daunting task, Dana says they simply haven’t met the right plant yet. “When someone tells me they have a brown thumb, my first go-to plant is the sansevieria, also known as a snake plant or mother-in-law’s tongue. They are virtually indestructible! They do not

require much light or water – they are very forgiving,” Dana says. “Another choice would be a peace lily. Some people call them closet plants due to their very low light needs. This plant will let you know when it wants water by drooping its leaves, and they will perk up once hydrated. “One more suggestion would be the pothos. It likes either bright, indirect light or low light. Its soil does not need much water or it will also grow as a sprig in a glass of water.” Dana says though fiddle leaf fig trees became extremely popular a few years ago, they are difficult to maintain. “They are definitely finicky fellows!” she says. “Some other less challenging choices for larger plants would be, once again, the snake plant, peace lily, ZZ plant, mass cane and dracaena.” For those looking to start small, Dana suggests air plants because they don’t utilize soil. “They don’t need watering, but they do need misting and a lukewarm soak about once a week,” she says. For the lowest maintenance, Dana suggests succulents. “They don’t require much water and can be planted in squatty pots for a different look. They come in many shapes and colors. It’s fun to get creative with them. They are my favorite.”

Keeping houseplants healthy isn’t as difficult as it may seem, Dana says. “The biggest syndrome is too much love or overwatering. I find watering once a week is a good standard for most plants,” Dana advises. She suggests housing plants in containers with a drainage hole. “This will help deter a cesspool in the bottom, which can create fungal issues or root rot.” Plant owners should read the directions on each plant so they will know how much light the plant requires to thrive. “Houseplants need a variety of amounts of light, but none like direct light. Do your research,” she says. To keep plants happy and healthy, replant them every nine to 12 months with new soil in a new container that is two inches larger than their current container, Dana says. “Doing this will refresh the nutrient levels that have been flushed out and will remove the salts that are remnants of fertilizers.” The new container will allow the roots more room to grow. Always be on the lookout for signs of trouble. “Signs of distress include drooping leaves, brown spots, yellowing leaves, visual insects and webbings,” Dana says. Drooping and discolored leaves can indicate over or under watering. Brown spots can indicate sunburn or too much heat from a heating vent, as well. When in doubt, Dana suggests bringing a leaf sample or picture to Calloway’s and asking a staff member for advice. “We have numerous staff members that are Texas Certified Nursery Professionals that are very willing to share their knowledge,” she says. “We also have the products to help you be successful with your house plant projects.” Calloway’s is located at 2901 Long Prairie Road in Flower Mound. THE ICONIC DALLAS LANDMARK IS THE NEW HOME TO BELOVED NORTH TEXAS MARKET ARTICLE BY STEPHANIE HASBROUCK PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID HASBROUCK, CONTRIBUTED
Before my family moved to Flower Mound, the only knowledge I had of Dallas was gleaned from the classic television show that my mother, sister and I faithfully devoted our Friday nights to in the 1980s. We never missed a single scandalous episode. When my family moved here seven years ago, one of my top priorities was to visit the iconic Southfork Ranch in person, but we never got around to it. When I learned that the Third Monday Trade Days, previously held in McKinney, had been moved to Southfork, I knew I must make the trek. Third Monday Trade Days are the oldest and largest monthly trade day event in North Texas. The market dates back to the late 1800s and had been held one weekend a month in the same location in McKinney since the 1960s. But, after more than 60 years, the McKinney market sadly closed in December after owners Darrell and Karen Lewis announced their retirement. However, much to the delight of DFW residents, it was announced that the legendary market would resume in another location in January. And the new location is almost as legendary as the market itself. I jumped at the chance to visit Southfork and the new Trade Days location during its opening weekend, and it did not disappoint. More than 200 booths were set up just south of the famous mansion. The vendors were as varied as one’s imagination and included antiques, furniture, clothing, candles, honey, furniture, lawn decorations… You name it. Shop owners were friendly. The prices were reasonable. And the location was pure Dallas. I highly recommend visiting the new Southfork Third Monday Trade Days for an outing and shopping adventure. It is the perfect place to bring guests, as well, to give them a true “Dallas” experience. CONTINUED >

THE HEART OF THE HOME ALISA POPELKA, FOUNDER AND PRINCIPAL INTERIOR DESIGNER OF ALISA CRISTINE INTERIORS, BREATHES NEW LIFE INTO THIS INTEGRAL SPACE
The kitchen is known as the “heart of the home.” It’s where family and friends gather to make meals and memories. Creating a warm and welcoming kitchen can breathe new life into a home. Just ask Alisa Popelka, Founder and Principal Interior Designer of Alisa Cristine Interiors. “Home is the foundation of some of life’s most important experiences and memories,

and the kitchen is typically a central gathering space where families share more than meals. It’s where they share joys, successes, disappointments and worries,” Alisa says. “I always want to create spaces around the way a family lives to elevate their everyday.” Alisa recently transformed this kitchen space from dark and dreary to bright and timeless.

SARAH LINDEN PHOTOGRAPHY, ALISA POPELKA
T HE UPDAT ES Alisa says her clients requested a blackand-white color scheme – otherwise known as a “tuxedo” kitchen. “Tuxedo kitchens have a timeless appeal and, if done correctly, can be a classic focal point and elevate any home,” she says. “Using brighter colors on the wall cabinets allows additional light reflection in the kitchen, which makes it appear more open and spacious, while the dark base cabinets help visually ground the space,” Alisa says. “This high-contrast color palette provides the perfect balance.” While white kitchens have long been a popular choice, Alisa advises, “Don’t be afraid to go bold! Paint can dramatically change a
room, and it’s also one of the easiest and most budget friendly ways to transform a space.” In addition to changing the color scheme of the kitchen, Alisa extended the wall cabinets to the ceiling to add visual appeal and storage. She also replaced the countertops, backsplash, lighting, hardware and flooring – completely transforming the space without changing the layout. “The intention was to design my clients’ dream kitchen while keeping the existing footprint of the space to help balance the overall budget,” Alisa says. “Creating a more functional kitchen design was also key by incorporating better and more useful storage solutions.”

CITY LIFESTYLE: SHARE WITH US YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE INFLUENCE IT HAD ON YOUR JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. DAPHNE OZ : I was born in Philly, raised in
New Jersey, and now my husband and our four kids and I live in Florida. I spend a few days each week working in NYC taping our new syndicated talk show, The Good Dish, covering everything delicious in daytime which is a dream job for an eater by nature, by calling and by choice—like I am. My mother’s family is part Italian and my father’s family is Turkish, and these two incredible food cultures inform so much of how I grew up eating and how I love to cook now. The vibrance of flavors, passion for gathering family and friends to the table, and effortless ways in which simple meals become beautiful memories are just some of the ways I try to infuse all my cooking with the joy of this heritage. I’ve been to culinary school, but every bite I take continues my education, and the foundation of my love of cooking started at my mother’s and grandmother’s elbows, watching and then helping them whip up these delicious, nourishing meals for their big families.
CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach
is: Abundant Simplicity. Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you. I always set a drink out that guests can help themselves to when they arrive, which frees my hands up to continue any final preparations and has the added benefit of helping them get comfortable and feel right at home. I love making edible centerpieces and will put tons of bowls and platters out in the center of the table spilling over with fresh produce or herbs in terracotta planters that guests can help themselves to. I enjoy colorful glasses, tons of gold candlesticks, and then handmade ceramic plates and pretty, linen napkins to keep it textural.
If you’re looking for a yummy signature cocktail, I’ve fallen in love with the Plume & Petal range of mid-proof premium infused vodkas. Each of their lemon, peach and cucumber flavors is naturally infused and layered with essences like white tea and elderflower and just a hint of honey for sweetness, so the taste is sophisticated and bespoke.
CL: WHAT INSPIRED YOUR NEWEST COOKBOOK AND WHAT CAN WE GET EXCITED ABOUT? DO: In “Eat Your Heart Out: All-Fun, No-Fuss
Food To Celebrate Eating Clean” I share the techniques I’ve used to get my mind, energy and body back on track after each pregnancy or anytime I’ve needed to reboot good habits—without ever losing the joy of cooking, the fun of mealtime and the stress-free pleasure of doing it intuitively. “Eat Your Heart Out” is a collection of 150 recipes free from gluten and refined sugar that have consistently helped me lose weight without ever disappointing my demanding tastebuds—or making healthy eating feel like a job I don’t need or want.
CL: IN ADDITION TO YOUR COOKBOOK, WHAT ARE SOME HOUSE-WARMING OR DINNER HOST GIFT SUGGESTIONS? DO: I find a little gift basket of some of my favor-
ite seasoning essentials goes a long way and feels personal and unique. I’ll add things like a favorite herbal tea like the Plain- Rooibos Passionfruit, some delicious Kosterina or Fancy Peasant olive oil, Westbourne Togarashi Crunch (such as an incredible saltycrispy pairing with buttery togarashi spiced chex cereal, toasty nuts, and a little bit of sweet to balance the spice! It’s the perfect bar snack FYI), Daphnis & Chloe herbs and spices (love their quality and pretty glass jars!), Gjelina Honey Trio, Maldon Flaky Smoked Sea Salt, Primo Botanica Tree Hugger Chaga Chocolate, Olive & Linen Turkish Hand Towels…the list goes on and on! Journey To Dream Honored ARTICLE BY STEPHANIE HASBROUCK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NIKKI DODGE PHOTOGRAPHY
LOCAL ORGANIZATION RECEIVES INAUGURAL ATRIA IMPACT AWARD
Journey to Dream recently received the inaugural Atria Impact Award in recognition of the organization’s outstanding work in the community. Shelly Dodge, Financial Advisor and owner of Visionary Financial Group, nominated the organization, which helps at-risk and homeless teenagers in the community. The award was created to celebrate local charities in which financial advisors and employees of Shelly’s brokerage firm are involved. “The Impact Award is dedicated to amplifying the charitable work of financial professionals and employees throughout the Atria family,” Shelly says. “Impact allows Atria to acknowledge the meaningful work between a local non-profit and the financial advisor to expand the charity’s reach by making a contribution to the organization on behalf of the financial advisor.” Four charities were selected to receive $5,000 each. Three were nominated by the company’s financial advisors, and one was nominated by its employees. “For this first year, out of the 2,500 financial advisors and 500 employees, there were 143 charities nominated with four winners being selected in a blind nomination process,” Shelly says. Journey to Dream was one of the four winners. Journey to Dream’s mission is to empower, equip and embrace victimized, at-risk and homeless teens to overcome adversity and homelessness through education, life skills and positive experiences.

Journey to Dream impacts the lives of more than 15,000 teenagers each year through its housing programs, school assemblies, support groups, RESET forums, community outreach and supportive resources. Shelly says the organization holds a special place in her heart for many reasons. She has chaired galas, served on the board and is a founding donor of Kyle’s Place, Denton County’s only homeless teen shelter. In addition, during Shelly’s leadership as President of the Cross Timbers Rotary Club, Journey to Dream was awarded a grant to update Kyle’s Place.
