LIFESTYLE LETTER
November - Thankful
November 2022 PUBLISHER
Jane Krzysiak | jane.krzysiak@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is on spending time with those that you love and encouraging giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating our Creator and those around us, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. Editor Stephanie Hasbrouck, shares DIY ways to fill your home with festive fragrances during the holidays in “Scents of the Season.” Another idea is to do a little baking! “Apple Fritter Donuts” pays homage to the season but are also a healthier pastry alternative according to Cara Price, The Nourished Body & Soul nutrition coach and blogger. We love to “hunker” down at home during the holiday season. “Beautiful in Black & White” showcases how a home can be completely revamped into a modern masterpiece. Stunning! If you are in the mood to host friends and family, “Your Autumn Dinner Party is Served” has tips that are just in time for our Texas cooler fall weather. Another idea is to grab friends or family and serve together. In “Giving Back,” we examine volunteer opportunities with local organizations. Aiding our many fine community non-profits is always an enriching experience, but even more so during our season of thankfulness. Local Experiences highlights our favorite Seasonal Pastimes from holiday shopping extravaganzas to parades and more! If your plans include a mini escape this season, consider a jaunt to Dallas. “Hotel Crescent Court Offers Rich Heritage and Sophistication” in Uptown and won’t disappoint. Enjoy this wonderful season. We are thankful for this community! Blessings to you and your family,

Fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld once said, “Black and white always looks modern, whatever that word means.” For Dee Dee Lear, Owner of Delaney’s Design, modern means style and sophistication. In fact, she recently designed an entire 7,800-squarefoot home in grayscale. “The clients’ design aesthetic is modern. We introduced the idea of using black to add the level of sophistication they were seeking — to break up all of the white and add interest and dimension.” Dee Dee says when she began the project, the home was custom builder-grade and did not reflect her clients’ style or personality. Dee Dee transformed the home into her clients’ dream space by creating a color palette of “white-to-black and everything in between” and making creative updates that give each space its own special style. “Individual rooms have their own personalities, yet all are of one ‘family’ of a consistent color palette and design aesthetic,” she says. “We used feature walls, custom built-ins and accessories to give this home a warm personality that mimics the homeowners’ personality and lifestyle.” One of the most dramatic features is the fireplace wall in the family room. Previously faced with gold travertine tile, the fireplace was refaced with a specialized, custom plaster technique and now resembles a work of art. Dee Dee says the statement wall in the dining room was a labor of love. “We measured, sketched, planned and worked side-by-side
with the carpenter to make sure it was executed perfectly. It may be the element I am most proud of because it was a challenge.” Dee Dee was determined to make the functional elements fabulous in her client's home. Off the dining room, Dee Dee transformed the wine cellar into a stunning space with dedicated climate control and custom-built storage and display. In the kitchen, new quartzite countertops and a unique glass-tile backsplash contribute to the home’s modern character. While warm wood floors complement the wooden beams and counterbalance the black-and-white. Additionally, Dee Dee furnished and accessorized the space to ultimately bring her design to life. “We hand-selected furniture and a few accessories from my clients’ existing collection and combined it with expertly-sourced pieces throughout the house to infuse their home with livable luxury, and the final outcome reflects their personality and functions beautifully for their lifestyle.” Delaney’s Design is a full-service interior design firm based in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The firm specializes in creating fivestar, luxury-resort-style homes specific to its clients’ personalities and lifestyles. From renovation and new build construction to floor plans and furnishings, Delaney’s Design takes care of absolutely everything necessary to transform a home into your favorite destination. Scent s of the Se a son Fill Your Home With Festive Fragrances During the Holidays
The holidays are a delight for all the senses – the sight of twinkling lights, the warmth of a cozy sweater, the sound of carols, the taste of home-baked goodies — but the aromas of the season seem to evoke an even deeper emotional reaction. The sense of smell is a powerful thing. It’s been scientifically proven that certain scents can elicit physical and psychological responses. When you think of the holidays, what fragrances come to mind? Cinnamon? Spiced apple cider? Cranberries? Evergreen? You’re probably smiling just thinking about it. This month, we’re sharing our favorite ways to celebrate the smile-inducing scents of the season. They are sure to fill your holiday home with festive feelings.
FRAGRANT HOLIDAY WREATH There is nothing like the smell of a fresh evergreen wreath. We love to hang one on the door and place one on the dining room table as a centerpiece with a large candle in the middle. To make the wreath more fragrant, add dried oranges and scented pinecones. What You’ll Need: • Fresh Evergreen Wreath • Florist Wire • Hot Glue Gun • Dried Oranges • Scented Pinecones CONTINUED >

Instructions: Simply wire or glue dehydrated oranges/orange slices and scented pinecones to a fresh evergreen wreath.
Instructions: Hot glue cinnamon sticks around the votive holder. Wrap with twine and tie a simple bow. Add candle.
HOLIDAY SIMMER POT
POMANDER BALLS
Fill your kitchen with holiday scents with a simmer pot. Adjust the fragrance to your liking by adding more spices and fruit or woodsy elements. Simmer Pot Packets make fun gifts, as well. Just add the ingredients to a cellophane bag and tie it with a festive ribbon.
We always have a big bowl of pomander balls in the kitchen during the holidays. Pomander balls are simply clove-studded oranges. They are a fun, fragrant project.
What You’ll Need: • Cranberries • Oranges • Cinnamon Sticks • Whole Cloves • Whole Star Anise • Sprigs of Evergreen or Rosemary (Optional) Instructions: Fill a small saucepan with water and bring to a gentle boil. Add simmer pot components and continue to boil for a minute or two. Turn the heat down to a slow simmer. Keep adding water frequently so the mixture does not burn. Make sure someone is near the kitchen at all times while the pot is simmering. Or add ingredients to a crockpot; just make sure to keep adding water.
CINNAMON-STICK CANDLES A wonderful way to add even more fragrance and flair to a holiday or unscented candle is to dress it up with cinnamon sticks. These make fun favors for dinner party guests, as well. What You’ll Need: • 3-inch Votive Candles (scented or unscented) • Plain Glass Votive Holder • Cinnamon Sticks • Hot Glue • Jute Twine
What You’ll Need: • Oranges • Toothpicks or wooden skewers • Whole Cloves Instructions: Cloves are a bit prickly so it’s best to first take a toothpick or wooden skewer and poke holes in the orange. Then place the clove into pre-pierced holes. This is an especially entertaining activity for children.
SIMPLE HOLIDAY POTPOURRI If a simmer pot isn’t your thing – try mixing up some dried potpourri. It’s so simple and can be enjoyed all season. Add sprigs of fresh greenery to the mix for added fragrance. What You’ll Need: Dried Orange Slices Cinnamon Sticks Whole Star Anise Pinecones (scented or unscented) Pure Essential Oils (Cinnamon, Orange and/or Fir) Sprigs of Fresh Greenery (Optional) Instructions: If using unscented pinecones, add a few drops of essential oil to scent them. Blend all of the components and enjoy the scents of the season!

HOTEL CRESCENT COURT OFFERS RICH HERITAGE AND SOPHISTICATION Experience renowned luxury with lavish hospitality in Uptown Dallas ARTICLE BY ERICA HERNANDEZ PHOTOGRAPHY BY HOTEL CRESCENT COURT
A visit to the Hotel Crescent Court will bring you into another world–one of European romance infused with modern hospitality. Few Texas destinations–if any–combine French Renaissance styles with swanky Texas charm such as at the luxurious Hotel Crescent Court. From its iconic architecture and courtyard garden to its stately rooms and celebrated cuisine, the hotel is widely recognized as one of the finest luxury lodgings in the nation. Built in the heart of Uptown Dallas, the hotel was the brainchild of Dallas oil heiress Caroline Rose Hunt, a prolific hotelier and considered the wealthiest woman in America. Known for her extraordinary vision, Caroline dreamt up the hotel’s grandeur from a slice of Dallas once rife with run-down car lots and warehouses. She hoped her exquisite hotel would inspire a renaissance in Uptown Dallas. Indeed it did. Built more than 30 years ago, the hotel now lies within the 11-acre grounds of The Crescent, a stunning mixed-use space that combines exquisite architecture with modern amenities, offices and shopping. Inspired by the perfect crescent-shaped curve of the 18th-century Royal Crescent Hotel in England, the Hotel Crescent Court is an astounding architectural feat. Its masterfully crescent-shaped contour, limestone block walls, and slated roofs imported from England echo the ambiance of 19th-century Europe. The building broke a CONTINUED >

Your Autumn Dinner Party Is Served Catering experts Chef Kyle and Hannah Williams, owners of Savor & Swirl culinary company, create an outdoor dinner party with chef-driven perennial dishes served in beautiful seasonal settings.
For this alfresco Autumn Dinner Party, Chef Kyle draws on favorite fall recipes updated for a modern palate and paired with wine selections to complement the bountiful feast. Hannah creates an iconic autumn ambiance using artisanal table settings and mixed flannels for each guest to blanket any chill on a brisk evening. Whether for Friendsgiving, Thanksgiving or a new November tradition, it’s time to get outdoors again surrounded in sweater-weather coziness while sharing bites and clinks with family and friends.

Insider Tips for Hosting:
• Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!” • As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.”

Apple Fritter Donuts
THESE PERFECT PASTRIES PAY HOMAGE TO APPLE SEASON
ARTICLE & PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARA PRICE
DRY INGREDIENTS • • • • • • •
1/2 cup coconut flour 1/2 cup tapioca flour 2 teaspoons cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
WET INGREDIENTS • • • • • •
5 eggs 1/2 cup maple syrup 1/4 cup apple juice {unsweetened} 1/4 cup +1 teaspoon avocado oil 1 tablespoon vanilla 1 large red apple, peeled, sliced & chopped very fine
DONUT GLAZE • 3 tablespoons palm oil shortening • 3 tablespoons honey • 1 teaspoons cinnamon
DIRECTIONS 1: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. 2: Make glaze for the donuts first. In a double boiler, combine the oil or ghee, honey & cinnamon. Whisk until completely smooth. Remove from heat & set aside. You will need to go back & whisk this about every 7-10 minutes until the donuts are done because the oil will try to separate from the honey. 3: Use 1 teaspoon of the avocado oil to lightly grease the donut pans. Peel & chop the apple. the pieces should be very small (I prefer to use my electric chopper for this). Evenly distribute the apple pieces into all the wells of the donut pans. 4: Combine the dry ingredients into a medium mixing bowl. 5: In a separate bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients & pour the liquid into the dry ingredients & whisk until smooth. 6: Evenly pour the batter into the donut wells, over the apple pieces, making sure that you leave enough room for them to rise & not cover the hole of the donut. 7: Bake donuts 11-13 minutes. Once done, cool in the pan for 5 minutes & then loosen them from the pan with a rubber spatula & place them on a cooling rack for 10 minutes. 8: Once slightly cooled, drizzle the cinnamon glaze over the donuts & serve. Store leftovers in the fridge.
