FOR MANY OF US, AUGUST IS A BITTERSWEET TURNING POINT IN THE CALENDAR YEAR. Summer freedom is drawing to a close, and the school bells will be ringing any day now. While the lazy days of sipping cool beverages poolside may be numbered, this month brings a sense of renewal. New routines, new clothes and new school supplies often come to mind in August. And because we dedicated an issue to both the men and women of our community earlier this year, it would only be right to celebrate some of our cutest residents: kids and pets! HiVi’s Morgan McKibbon owns Pink Paw Pet Sitting and shares her passion and professionalism for the care of pets. She may be the answer to your prayers. Next, we are awestruck by local artist Ellen Drummond’s talent in capturing furry friends on canvas—amazing! We’ll also whip up a recipe for homemade dog treats so you can spoil your loyal companions.

ELLEN DRUMMOND OF DOODLE SNOOTS CREATES CUSTOM PAINTINGS OF "FUR-EVER" FRIENDS ARTICLE STEPHANIE HASBROUCK PHOTOGRAPHY ROBERT RAY PHOTOGRAPHY 14

“THE PORTRAITS AREN’ T GREAT BECAUSE I CAN PAINT; THEY ARE GREAT BECAUSE OF THE DOG I’M PAINTING. THEY MEAN SOMETHING TO THE OWNER. THEY REMIND THEM OF EVERY WONDERFUL THING THEIR DOG ALREADY IS AND THE GIFTS THEY’VE GIVEN THEM BY BEING IN THEIR LIVES.” LOOKING AT ELLEN DRUMMOND’S PET PORTRAITS, ONE GETS THE COMPLETE PICTURE OF THE ANIMALS SHE HAS PAINTED. Their personalities shine through the canvas. “I take what is already there behind their eyes and put it on canvas,” she says. With photographs as inspiration, Ellen captures the essence of every animal she paints, but she takes little credit. “The portraits aren’t great because I can paint; they are great because of the dog I’m painting. They mean something to the owner. They remind them of every wonderful thing their dog already is and the gifts they’ve given them by being in their lives,” Ellen says. Ellen began her pet painting business, Doodle Snoots, after posting a portrait she painted of a friend’s dog online and receiving numerous orders as a result. In addition to Doodle Snoots, she owns Ellen Dayle Performance Horses, a training and boarding facility in Argyle. “I have always loved animals, period,” she says. “I currently train horses in Argyle as my full-time job and paint dogs and other pets as a part-time job. My life is literally animals.” For more information about Doodle Snoots, visit Facebook.com/DoodleSnoots. August 2019 | Cross Timbers Lifestyle

BALANCING ACT KALEIDOSCOPE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH COUNSELORS OFFER ADVICE FOR COPING WITH SCHOOL-YEAR STRESS ARTICLE STEPHANIE HASBROUCK

WELCOME TO THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR, WHEN NEW FRIENDS WILL BE MADE, NEW LESSONS WILL BE LEARNED, NEW EXPERIENCES WILL BE HAD AND NEW STRESSES ARE SURE TO ABOUND. Let’s face it: in today’s overly scheduled, competitive world, stress has become a way of life. And students are feeling it more than ever.

16

Cross Timbers Lifestyle | August 2019

“There is huge drive for success,” says Kaleidoscope Behavioral Health therapist Dore Quinn. “There is the pressure that every child’s journey should be the same, and

that’s not necessarily good for each child.”

BE WILLING TO SAY NO. AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, HAVE A FAMILY MEETING TO EVALUATE AND NARROW DOWN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES.

In fact, Dore encourages parents to let their children know, at the beginning of the school year, that success is not expected 100% of the time. “It’s OK if they fail something,” she says. “It’s actually important for them to learn to fail at something at home because when they fail at college for the first time, it’s a disaster, and some kids are becoming suicidal.” How can parents teach their children that failure is normal and acceptable? By modeling failure themselves, Dore and her colleagues say. “Kids are afraid to make mistakes and therefore are limiting themselves by not even trying,” says Kaleidoscope founder Dr. Kay Trotter. “I always tell parents, ‘I want you to model trying new things and not being successful for your kids and purposefully failing so they see it’s OK. I want your child to try new things and fail under the umbrella of your protection.’” While trying new things is important, Kay and her colleagues also encourage parents to carve out free time and

and when parents are stressed, their children are stressed. “Developmentally, the free play element is so important to children, and they are not getting it,” says Kaleidoscope counselor Lisa Beijan. Kaleidoscope Play therapist Jason McCoy agrees. “Students only are getting an average of 20 minutes of recess. Play is literally the place where kids process all of their experiences and emotions,” he says, adding that when people are at play, they are not experiencing stress hormones. Jason encourages parents to schedule regular dates with their children. “These should not be an event or an expense,” he says, but a simple walk, hike or art project together. Conversely, parents should realize that private time also is important for children as they grow. “It’s a developmental need,” Lisa says. Though isolating is a normal part of growing up, the Kaleidoscope team says it also can be a response to increased stress. “Kids will isolate a lot when parents are being overly critical,” Dore says. “You have to balance that.” Kay encourages parents to keep lectures to their children succinct in order to keep stress at bay. “If a parent is going to lecture, they should keep it to

AND PROVIDED

DETERMINED TO TAKE A “LAST HURRAH” FAMILY TRIP WHEN OUR OLDEST GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL, I HEARKENED BACK TO A TRIP WE’D TAKEN SEVEN YEARS EARLIER THAT BENEFITED FROM THE SOFT LENS OF ROSE-COLORED GLASSES. It was a two-week Floridian adventure that lived on in my memory as the trip where I read Atlas Shrugged cover to cover, enjoyed the beach with friends and avoided most of the rides at Disney by sitting out with our then 18-month-old. It was perfect. Planning a “redux” of this treasured trip required me to acknowledge the differences in ages then and now and the span of interests and ages we had along for the ride. The trip was as magical this go-round with its own flavor and will hold a place in my heart and in our memories. Two weeks away from home is hard no matter how you cut it and being with six—yep, we brought friends—kids ages 8 to 18 requires some planning and flexibility. We had some snafus: two Minute Clinic visits (who doesn’t get pink eye or a virus while traveling?) and I washed a friend’s iPhone. But all in all, we loved every minute, making memories, carving out time

Two weeks away may not be something you can swing, but if you ever can, I highly recommend it. Certain adventures just need the extra time. For us, spending the first week on the go in Orlando was ideal. Up early to benefit from preferred-customer magic hours, we schlepped across multiple Disney parks to use Fast Passes covering our “must-rides.” We wove in a stay at a Universal property this go-around with older kids, and it was by far the biggest hit along with Volcano Bay water park. The Universal Express Pass system is a huge bonus, and older kids could be on their own or meet up as desired. After a high-octane week making every minute count, we were happy to point our SUV northward and head to the South Walton area. It’s the perfect ending for this trip—run like mad in Orlando and then veg out at the beach for a week to recover! We’ve often vacationed in the Blue Mountain Beach/Santa Rosa Beach area with friends and adore the gorgeous beaches, laid-back towns and friendly locals as well as happy vacationers. Trying to go back in time and recreate an idolized trip is tricky. Plus being away from home for two weeks with a small army of children and teens lends a special dynamic, but it was just as ideal this time around. That has less to do with the planning and more to do with having an open mind and heart to receive this moment in time for whatever it’s going to be—and knowing we were together as a family unit at least one more time. 20

Tips for Planning a Fa m i l y Tr i p TIP 1 If you are visiting monuments, museums or theme parks, do your research ahead of time, or work with someone who knows the ropes. Samantha Barnes at Golden Ears Travel in Flower Mound helped me figure out the Orlando piece of the trip.

TIP 2 If you are taking a longer trip, build in downtime, and have a place where you can wash clothes. We love the format of week one is on the go, and week two is relaxation at a great home or condo.

TIP 3 Successful planning for various ages means having realistic expectations. Give older ones some freedom; don’t force everyone to do the same thing. Consider allowing teens to invite a friend.

TIP 4 For a long drive, pack healthy snacks but also something fun, like Rice Krispies Treats you made plus bottles of water. Charge the iPad, include educational games and bring classic DVDs that your kids will enjoy and may have never seen: Gilligan’s Island, Brady Bunch and Leave It to Beaver are favorites.

TIP 5 Don’t over-plan to the point you have no leeway to add in last-minute fun, even if it’s just a late-night game of Monopoly that organically develops.

TIP 6 Don’t orchestrate every moment to be captured and posted on Instagram. Take some pictures in your mind, and remember their faces and the glow of the moment uninterrupted.

READY TO TAKE A STEP UP FROM BEING AN IPHONE PHOTOGRAPHER? Bob Ray with Robert Ray Photography shares how you can make the transition. First, use a full-size camera with “interchangeable lens” and consider “mirrorless” as this is a new option. Bob has used a Sony (Minolta) for decades but reminds us, “… The most important part of photography is six inches behind the viewfinder: your brain!” Early on, put the camera in “auto” mode to learn how to use it. Three factors affect an image’s exposure—ISO, f stop and shutter speed—and how they interact. Eventually, you will put the camera in “aperture” mode so you control the f stop and can experiment with “depth of field.” “A good portrait has some ‘separation’ between the subject and the background, and controlling aperture is the key,” Bob says. “And it is what separates a fullsized camera from a cell phone.” When it comes to lighting, Bob says, “On-camera flash directly at the subject is the worst!” Shade near full sun is best because it is “soft” on

‘Purrfect’ Peace of Mind PINK PAW PET SITTING PROVIDES IN-HOME CARE FOR FURRY FAMILY MEMBERS

FOR MANY PET OWNERS, THEIR PETS ARE MORE THAN JUST ANIMALS; THEY ARE MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY. The same is true for Pink Paw Pet Sitting Owner Morgan McKibbon, who began her business six years ago out of the love she had for her own dog. “My own dog, a rescued boxer, suffers from both separation anxiety and isolation distress,” Morgan says. “When I moved to the Dallas area in 2013, I had to take her to doggy daycare whenever I needed to go practically anywhere. … When I picked her up, more often than not, she would be dirty and stressed out and sometimes had not eaten normally. It occurred to me that there must be other pet parents who had experienced the same problems and who would appreciate having someone to take care of their pets who understands how difficult it is to leave a pet and how important it is to be able to do so with someone who is caring, qualified and trustworthy. Over the last six years, I have worked to build my business with these goals in mind.” Pink Paw Pet Sitting provides in-home care for dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs and frogs. “The visits we make to our clients’ homes may include feeding, medications, walks, litter-box cleaning and, most importantly, attention and love,” Morgan says. Before sitting for animals, Morgan requires a meet-andgreet with pet owners to learn about each individual pet’s needs and routines. “We also answer questions the owners may have,” she says. “We want our pet parents to feel confident that their pets will be loved and well cared for in their absence.” Morgan says in-home pet sitting is preferable for many pets, especially cats, small pets, elderly pets and those that don’t respond well to other animals. She encourages social animals be boarded at a facility where they can play and socialize. “But, for the rest, we offer a service that cannot be duplicated outside of the pet’s own home,” she says.
