SUMMERTIME IS A MAGICAL SEASON. For many, summer evokes fond memories of childhood—sleepaway camp, family vacations and swimming until your fingers shriveled like prunes. Flower Mound in July means Independence Fest! We take a look at what’s in store this year on Page 14. July is also the perfect month to host a barbecue, and we like the idea of channeling Uptown Farmhouse’s Garth Blackburn and his take on watermelon—refreshing! And if you are lucky enough to get out on one of our area lakes this month, it might put you in the mood for a new boat. The folks at Slalom Shop in Lewisville share the latest Cobalt R5 Surf boat in our Driver’s Notebook, and we are in love. By July 1, if you haven’t already, you may be experiencing pool envy—whether you want to update an older pool or are ready to “take the plunge” and put in a new

COMPLETE LANDSCULPTURE'S JEFF DITTA OFFERS PRACTICAL ADVICE FOR POOL CONSTRUCTION AND RENOVATION

Make a Splash ARTICLE STEPHANIE HASBROUCK PHOTOGRAPHY JAMES WILSON ONE OF THE MOST NOTABLE ASPECTS OF FLYING OVER THE DALLAS-FORT WORTH REGION IS SEEING THE LANDSCAPE DOTTED WITH SWIMMING POOLS IN ALMOST EVERY OTHER BACKYARD. Swimming pools are a way of life in Texas. There is no better way to beat the summer heat than taking a dip in a cool, crystal-blue pool. Many local homeowners strive for the perfect outdoor oasis, and a pool is the icing on the cake. But there are many things to consider before starting construction or renovation on a swimming pool. “It is important to think about the size of your family, who will be doing the primary swimming or enjoyment. Also, the number of guests or functions you entertain on average. Other things that are important are diving ends, play pools or both from a depth and layout perspective,” says Jeff Ditta, executive business development manager for Complete Landsculpture. In addition, homeowners should consider the style of pool that best suits their aesthetic. Jeff says Complete Landsculpture offers modern/geometric and curvilinear options with features, such as tanning ledges, grottos, slides, water features and fire bowls. When it comes to maintaining pools, Jeff says homeowners are no longer opting for trendy saltwater systems.

MAKE A SPLASH

Cross Timbers Lifestyle | July 2019

“Saltwater pools are becoming a trend of the past as they are corrosive to stones, furniture and are a high-maintenance cost,” he says. “A natural mineral ionizer with chlorinator combo keeps your water clear while using half the chlorine of traditional chlorinator.” Once homeowners have decided on a style, size and features, they can begin construction. Jeff says a typical play pool on a standard-size lot will cost about $50,000 to $60,000. Larger lots with larger pools or dive pools range from $70,000 to $95,000. Construction can begin anytime, he says. “Being in the great state of Texas, we have a year-round construction schedule,” he says. “Keep in mind certain months are wetter than others and can cause delays in the process. A typical residential pool is a six- to eight-week project given minimal weather delays,” Jeff says. Many homeowners who already have backyard pools are looking for ways to update them. Those looking to revamp older backyard pools should first have the structure examined, Jeff says. “Structural integrity and remedy to faults are extremely important. Things such as leveling beams, cracking and settling should all be addressed and repaired during the process. A pool remodel should stand for 10–12 years without additional issues,” he says. Once the pool is installed or renovated, homeowners should consider additional features to complete their outdoor oasis. Jeff suggests adding hot tubs, fire features and pavilions to create year-round outdoor enjoyment. “A great pool starts with a master plan design to include and layout all outdoor patio spaces, kitchens and needs,” Jeff says. “Creative landscape design, lighting, grading and drainage can all help these spaces really come together. Popular backyard trends we are seeing now also include bocce ball courts, putting greens and fire features.”

Cross Timbers Lifestyle | July 2019

LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT BOAT TO TAKE OUT ON THE LAKE THIS SUMMER? David McIntyre, sales manager of Slalom Shop in Lewisville, suggests the Cobalt R5 Surf boat. “It is a great boat for any of our larger lakes in the area but is still trailer-able,” he says. “It also has the ability to create a great surf wave to take advantage of this growing sport.” The R5 Surf boat offers the best of both worlds for those who like to go boating and for those who like to take part in water sports. “It’s perfect for any family with people who love to be active behind the boat,” he says. Slalom Shop has been selling high-end boats and “boating toys” since 1977. “We sell Cobalt, Supra, Moomba and Barletta Pontoons, all designed to be luxury boats for cruising and water sports,” David says. “We are fortunate to live in an area where lots of people love boating.” David says buying a boat is an attainable dream, and now is the perfect time to make that dream come true. “Most people do not realize how flexible financing is on boats. Rates are very attractive right now, and you can finance long-term to keep your payment lower than you think.”

Swirl to combine. Place the cap back on the bottle. Allow the oils to disperse in the alcohol for about 1 hour, then add distilled water, swirling again to combine.

*The grain alcohol is used as a preservative as well as a carrier for the oils, but you can also use a product like this instead of grain alcohol at a 1:4 ratio (1 drop essential oil to 4 drops Solubol) if you’d rather and then just fill the rest with water to fill the 2-ounce spray bottle.

While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).
