OK, GENTLEMEN. You’ve waited patiently for your turn. Last month, we brought you our Ladies issue—it is ladies first, after all—and this month, we present our “Gents” issue, celebrating all things masculine. Of course, there’s Father’s Day on June 16—we hope you enjoy your weekend with a great round of golf, an amazing camping trip or whatever tickles your fancy. This month at Cross Timbers Lifestyle, we’re excited to shine a light on five men of influence who are impacting our community daily. These gentlemen are diverse, witty and intelligent—and they were fun to hang out with for the afternoon at local gem State Draft House & Craft Kitchen. We’ll also delve into why it’s healthy to have a hobby, so pick that basketball back up or commit to tracking down your family crest. Not every hour should be spent driving to kids’ sports activities or working.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

ARTICLE JANE KRZYSIAK

MY HUSBAND HAS ALWAYS ENJOYED HIS HOBBIES. When I met him, there was the model airplane phase, followed by the micro-brewing stint in his closet. In our early marriage, he played roller hockey weekly with guys 10 years his junior. Fly fishing came a little later and offered the dual pleasure of spending time in majestic places and carefully studying the art of tying his own flies, a gift he is passing on to our boys. And while I’ve teased him over the years about his many interests, I’ve always been a little envious of his ability to “shut down” the robotic treadmill of daily life. According to the book Psychological Benefits of Leisure Participation by Howard E.A. Tinsley, “Participating in leisure activities contributes to your physical and mental health and overall life satisfaction. You’re healthier, happier and more cheerful. You enjoy life more.” Tinsley’s observations are based on 15 years of research and more than 4,000 interviews. Hobbies relieve stress, develop confidence and can help you forge new social relationships. So, reject the mindset that you simply don’t have time for a hobby. Challenge yourself to pick back up an old favorite or pursue a new passion. You’ll be glad you did.

HOBBIES CAN DELIVER HEALTH BENEFITS WHILE PROVIDING ENJOYMENT

HOBBY TIME

NUMBER ONE Commit to carving out time for a hobby. Start slowly so you don’t become overwhelmed. A weekly commitment is a good idea. Now put it on the calendar, and stick to it!

NUMBER T WO Choose a hobby that will bring you joy, relaxation or confidence. It may be picking up an old favorite or trying something completely new, but weigh the benefits of what you hope to gain.

NUMBER THREE Consider branching out into new social circles. Even if your hobby is a solitary pursuit, there are often local enthusiasts or groups to meet up with.

plimentary sodas and juices. And children enjoy free snacks.

“Everything in here is from the 1880s to the 1930s,” says owner Ace Polson Jr. “It’s like you stepped back in time.” What began as a collection of barbershop memorabilia has become a dedicated profession for Ace and his son, Trace, who manages the Flower Mound shop. “I’ve been collecting barbershop items for years,” Ace says, adding that he began with a single one-station back bar and a barber chair. “The next thing I knew, we had eight barber chairs in our living room.” Ace formerly worked in sales and management, but when he began having health problems, he decided to retire from his career and pursue something fulfilling but less stressful. “So I went to barber school at the age of 53,” he says.

“That’s one reason kids love us,” Ace says. The friendly atmosphere keeps customers coming back. Ace says 99 percent of all customers are repeat customers. “You come in once, and you’ll be back,” he says. Dawn Dorminy-Hurst, a barber and longtime friend of the Polsons, says customers appreciate the family-friendly atmosphere. “We want Back-N-Time to not only be a place where people get a great haircut and shave, but they also feel they are part of the family.” As with Ace, barbering is Dawn’s second career. Before becoming a barber, she was a stand-up comedian for 10 years. “Then I decided to have babies and become normal, and being a barber is about as normal as it gets,” she says. “Back-N-Time is a blessing to me. There are no greater humans to work for.” She says Back-N-Time also is a blessing to the community. Though the barbershop has a traditional, nostalgic feel, Dawn says the barbers are well-versed in all of the latest hairstyles. “Though everything here has the ‘back-in-time’ feel, we stay on top of all of the cutting-edge styles for the young ones,” she says.

He opened his first shop after graduating and now owns two barber shops—one in

(CON TI N U ED)

Mayor Steve Dixon is a native North Texan who has lived in Flower Mound with his wife, Amanda, since 2000. The couple has two daughters, Amber and Lauren, who both attend the University of Arkansas. Steve also is a mortgage loan officer with American National Bank & Trust in Flower Mound. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING AND WORKING IN OUR COMMUNITY? Flower Mound is a great place to live, work and raise a family. We

S t e v e D i x o n

enjoy the close community feel and the diversity of things to do and places to go. Flower Mound is uniquely located in DFW, and once you arrive in town, you know it’s something special. WHAT IS YOUR BEST PIECE OF ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO BECOME MORE INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY? For someone who wants to get involved in the community, there are many opportunities. My advice would be to introduce yourself and express your willingness and desire to help. Past this first-step introduction, be consistent and show up to help and meet others who also

want to help and be involved. People can quickly see someone who really wants to be involved and help. Once these few steps are taken, the opportunities to get more involved will be very evident.

MEN OF INFLUENCE

(CON TI N U ED)

During his 15-year tenure at Downing Middle School, Drew Libby’s seventh and eighth grade teams have won 10 basketball championships and 15 football district championships. He has become a role model to all of his students. In addition to coaching, he teaches physical education. Drew and his wife, Jamie, have two daughters, Taya and Lana, who both attend Bridlewood Elementary. In his spare time, Drew helps coach his daughter’s softball, basketball and soccer teams. He and Jamie also serve and teach Sunday school at Bridgeway church. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING AND WORKING IN OUR COMMUNITY? Downing was my first job out of college, and I instantly fell in love with the kids and families from this area. The kids that I coach and teach have always been very hardworking and respectful, which is a testament to their upbringing. I love how the community comes together when a family deals with a tragedy or is struggling. The community works together very well to help each other out, which makes it a very tight-knit community. I also love how we get to benefit from a top-notch public school system in our community. I get to see it firsthand every day at work, and it excites me that my girls get the opportunity to go through a system like this. WHAT IS YOUR BEST PIECE OF ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO BECOME MORE INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY? I think volunteering to help coach a youth sports team is a great way to get involved. We have great programs in our community that offer different sports for our youth. I have seen the impact some of these volunteer coaches have had on my daughters, and I am grateful for that. I know as a coach myself how big of a role we can play in helping our youth mature and grow in the right ways. I also think volunteering and serving at your church is another great way to get involved in our com-

TRIETSCH MEMORIAL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH’S HONEY DUDES PROGRAM OFFERS MUCH-NEEDED SUPPORT TO LOCAL WIDOWS, SINGLE MOTHERS, MILITARY WIVES AND ELDERLY RESIDENTS. Armed with their “honey-do” list, a minimum of two members of the group offer help weekly to those in the community who need an extra hand. “Whatever two guys can knock out in an hour or an hour and a half, that’s what we do,” says Kevin Cummings, Honey Dudes’ founder. Though their mission is simple, their work has greatly affected the community and the Honey Dudes themselves.

Kevin says the idea behind the program originated from the Bible verse James: 1:27: “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” “We base everything we do around it,” he says. Honey Dudes consists of 60 men of all ages and denominations in the community. Though organized by Trietsch, members of Valley Creek, Fellowship, Rock Pointe and The Village participate in the program. Kevin recalls one of the most memorable moments he has experienced through Honey Dudes was receiving a call from someone who requested the Honey Dudes do yard work for a local retired pastor. “He was too embarrassed to call himself,” Kevin says. Kevin happily accepted the challenge. When the group arrived at the site, Kevin says the front yard was fine. The pastor had been working hard to keep up

appearances for the neighborhood. However, health problems prohibited him from being able to maintain the rest of his yard. “His backyard was a jungle,” Kevin says. What resonated most with Kevin was how closely he lived to the man. “It was two streets from where I live,” he says. “There literally are people in our own backyard who

need our help.” Though most projects require two Honey Dudes, Kevin says oftentimes local Bible study groups or outreach groups will partner with the Honey Dudes for larger projects. Many churches in the area have begun similar programs of their own. “It’s Christian men wanting to do what the Bible tells us to do,” Kevin says, adding that many of the Honey Dudes bring their sons to work on projects. He says it’s inspiring for the young men to see their fathers acting out their faith. “They are seeing it’s not Bible study. It’s Bible doing.” Honey Dudes operates solely from monetary donations and volunteer help. To participate in the

what it is There are many different types of fades, but ultimately a fade haircut is one that tapers in length the further down you go on the back and sides, meaning it isn’t trimmed to just one standard length all around. The level of fade (low, mid or high) depends on what point the shortest part of the hair begins to fade into a longer length. ASK FOR Taper fade, low fade, mid fade, high fade or skin fade

The man bun + what it is This popular style is good for many types of hair as long as you have a lot of it. You’ll need length in the front, back and sides generally long enough to at least brush your shoulders. KEEP IT CLEAN Be sure to keep your sideburns and neckline trimmed even as your hair grows out.

The quiff

+ what it is Closely related to the pompadour, the quiff haircut requires longer hair in the front and shorter hair in the back. The longer hair in the front is brushed upward and back from the forehead and away from the face. This look can be sleek and shiny for a classic look or texturized and matte for a modern take. ASK FOR Short sides and a long textured top. Be sure enough hair is left on top to brush back instead of standing straight up.
