She has played four years of varsity soccer, two years of varsity softball and two years of varsity cross-country. She serves as a mentor to middle school girls through the school’s Impact program. She has also participated in two Liberty mission trips, one to the Dominican Republic and the other to Thailand. Sadler was a senior captain for the football team this year, and last year, he received the 2017 Comeback Player of the Year Award and the 2017 Warrior Perseverance Award. He has also been a member of the Key Club and Spanish Club, as well as an Impact leader. In every year of Upper School, he has traveled with Liberty on the spring break mission trip. He plans to pursue a pre-med degree and hopes to become an orthopedic surgeon. Savannah has maintained a 4.0 GPA and volunteers with Special Olympics and other organizations. She also participated in Liberty’s mission trip to Jamaica in March. The store features gently used furniture, home décor and personal accessories, as well as new gift items. Kayla says she opened the store to support the local organization Pregnancy Help 4 U, a pregnancy medical clinic that provides free medical services and information to teen and young adult mothers and fathers. Originally, Kayla says Pregnancy Help 4 U operated with the help of donors, churches and grants. “We were helping so many people; it was hard to fund the organization," she says. With the assistance of a grant from the Amon G. Carter Foundation in Fort Worth, Kayla was able to renovate the 4,200-square-foot building in Argyle that now houses Divine Finds. Kayla says her colleagues, Pregnancy Help 4 U Board Chairwoman Ashley McWhorter and store manager Casree Holland, also played key roles in opening the store, which has become a booming success.

“It’s amazing. We knew it would be successful. We felt like God had led us here,” Kayla says. “The first day, we sold $11,000 worth of merchandise.” Half of all proceeds benefit Pregnancy Help 4 U, and the other half is divided between Buyamba Orphanage in Uganda; Justice 61, a domestic sex trafficking rescue organization; and SOS International, an international sex trafficking rescue organization. Kayla says Divine Finds is unlike other resale stores. “It’s very open, light and bright.” And, she says, there is something divine about the store. During the remodel, she and others prayed over the store, writing scriptures and tucking them into the walls before they were Sheetrocked. “We’ve done many prayer walks at the store, and we prayed it would be a bright light in the community and shine light in the community,” Kayla says. “The presence of God is there. EACH YEAR, AVID GARDENER KAY TROTTER OF FLOWER MOUND GROWS MORE IN HER GARDEN THAN HER FAMILY CAN EAT, SO SHE GIFTS MUCH OF HER HARVEST TO FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS. Though others may reap the fruits (and vegetables) of her labor, Kay says her garden has given her so much more. “For me, it’s therapeutic. It’s what feeds my soul,” she says. Kay, who lives on 1 acre in the Saddle Oaks neighborhood, says she likes to make her garden beds whimsical and fun. “The vegetable garden is more than just rows of vegetables; I like to be more creative,” she says, adding that she recently installed an antique headboard and footboard in her garden to train vines. “It turned out really cool.” Unlike the popular nursery rhyme implies, Kay is anything but contrary when she is in her garden. She says digging in the dirt makes her happy. “When you put your hands in the soil, it releases a chemical in your brain that fights depression,” she says. Basil is one of Kay's biggest crops. She often makes pints of pesto and freezes it and gifts it to neighbors. She also pickles jalapeños and dries and grinds cayenne peppers for friends. How does her garden grow? “It’s all about the soil,” she says, “and I’ve worked really hard preparing my soil.”

I N G R E D I ENTS + 3 cups fresh basil leaves, slightly packed + 1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese + 2 teaspoons minced garlic + 1 teaspoon lemon zest + 1/4 cup toasted pine nuts, cashews or almonds + 2 teaspoons lemon juice + 1/2 cup olive oil + Pinch of red pepper flakes, optional

D I R E C T I ONS 1. Add the basil leaves, parmesan cheese, minced garlic, lemon zest, pine nuts, lemon juice and red pepper flakes to a blender or food processor. Blend continuously until the ingredients start to breakdown. If you prefer a more coarse pesto, use the pulse setting. 2. Stream in the olive oil and allow the ingredients to emulsify with the oil. Continue processing until the oil is combined with the basil and other ingredients. Taste and add additional garlic or parmesan if desired. 3. Store the pesto in a small container, where the pesto fits all the way to the top, and press to reduce air pockets. Homemade pesto can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week. You can also pour the pesto into ice cube trays and freeze. Transfer to a zip-close bag once frozen. CONTINUED >

PERFECT PICKLED JALAPEÑO PEPPERS

INGREDIENTS + 15-20 jalapeño peppers, sliced + 4 garlic cloves, peeled and smashed + 1 cup white vinegar + 1 cup water + 4 tablespoons sugar + 2 tablespoons canning salt

DIRECTIONS 1. Pack jalapeños into your jar(s) until they are level with the bottom of the neck of the jar. 2. In a medium saucepan, combine the garlic, vinegar, water, sugar and salt. Heat to a boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar and salt. 3. Once dissolved, pour into jars leaving 1/2 inch space. (Always heat your jars in the oven first. About 400 F for about 20 minutes is best.) Seal firmly but not too tightly with two-piece metal canning lids. (Remember to boil snap lids for 5 minutes before use.) 4. Partly fill canner with water and bring almost to boil. Place jars on rack and pour in boiling water to cover jars by an inch. Cover and bring to boil for 10 minutes. 5. Remove and place jars on towel to cool before storing somewhere dark and cool. Once opened, keep refrigerated.

The name 5G reflects the five generations that have farmed the land. Three generations currently live and work on the farm. Founded in the early 1900s, the first crops planted on the farm were cotton and peanuts. Each generation has planted new crops, but one thing has remained the same: “There has never been any chemicals on the land,” Mindy says. The all-organic farm now produces fruits, vegetables, herbs, quail and chicken eggs, and livestock, with plans to produce mushrooms, saffron, raw milk, butter and other specialty items. The Grimeses sell several products, including jellies, jams, pork, pickled quail eggs, chicken eggs, gardening supplies, herbs, fruits, vegetables and homeopathic treatments at the Denton Community Market, held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Customers also can order from 5G-Farms.com. All items are organically grown because the family believes in the power of organic foods. “I’m a firm believer in the fact that there has to be a reason there are so many diseases and cancers now that were not prevalent when our grandparents were growing up. It’s got to be the food we eat,” Mindy says. Having experienced a health scare of her own, Mindy says she and her family are fully committed to the organic lifestyle. “Nine years ago, I had a brain tumor,” she says, Doctors removed the tumor, and her family decided to focus on the foods they consume. “We now live a very self-reliant lifestyle,” she says. “Most of the things we eat, we grow. We believe it’s important to try to raise our own food and eat what we raise.” While all 5G Farms items are organically grown, Mindy says they are not certified organic because of the cost. “We’re not certified organic because it would cause us to have to sell items at such a high rate that the average family couldn’t afford it,” she says. Though not certified, Mindy says she is adamantly opposed to using any kinds of pesticides or chemicals on her farm—keeping with the generations before her. “I don’t see any as acceptable.”
