For the program, the team invites any interested fourth- and fifth-grader to be an honorary member of the varsity team for one game. Youth ambassadors get the exciting opportunity to be on the field during pregame activities and have their name announced during introductions. In addition, each ambassador receives a free Future Jag T-shirt. David Doyle, FMHS boys head soccer coach, is a strong supporter of the program and makes sure he meets the youth ambassadors each week. “We are specifically asking fourth and fifthgrade students because we feel this is a great age to promote youth soccer and get them excited about playing for their middle school and high school soccer teams,” he said.

As many accidents and disasters have resulted in serious bleeding injuries, the premise of the campaign is to empower individuals and equip them with the necessary training to help in a bleeding situation while waiting for emergency responders. According to the campaign’s official website, individuals can die from blood loss within five minutes, so stopping or slowing bleeds can be lifesaving.

Recently, students enrolled in Dale Jackson Career Center’s Health Science Clinical Rotations course partnered with Flower Mound Fire Department to learn about the campaign. Dr. Charleen Handzel, who teaches the clinical rotations course, said her students learned the basics of stopping bleeding, equipment available to use in such events, and practiced using a tourniquet and packing an open wound. BROADWAY STAR TEACHES FINE ARTS WORKSHOP AT LIBERTY Liberty Christian Middle and Upper School Fine Arts students enjoyed a very special workshop on January 22 hosted by “Hamilton” star Thayne Jasperson. Thayne, the only remaining member of the original “Hamilton” cast, taught students the music and choreography to one of the show’s famous songs, “Schuyler Sisters,” and then students performed the song in groups. Brad shared that, over the course of his baseball career, he had many standout moments, but he said he enjoyed those special baseball moments in high school just as much as those in his professional career. After winning the 4A State Championship at Boswell High School in Fort Worth, Brad went on to play baseball at Navarro Junior College in Corsicana, then Louisiana State University. As a junior at LSU, he won the College World Series. After entering the draft, Brad played professionally from 2004-13. He left the boys with three major points: take your career into your own hands, don’t think it’s your coach's job to get you into the college of your dreams, and live in the moment—stop looking ahead to what’s next or you’ll miss the special times in your life now. Two of their three children had left the nest, and the couple decided to make this remodel more of a reflection of themselves. “This was my favorite remodel because it was focused on us and not the kids,” Sherry says. The couple remodeled their children’s spaces several years ago but decided to focus on the home’s downstairs living spaces for their latest remodel. “We wanted it to be more open," Sherry says. "The house, before, had a lot more walls. It was really nice to be able to open the space up. “Our old design was more ranchlike, dark, masculine and oldworld style.”

While most of the walls were painted off-white, a wall in the dining room is painted aubergine, and the Daniels' office is painted deep-tone navy blue. "To really balance a space out, you need color,” Gale explains. “You need color to get energy into the space, and (the Daniels) are energetic people.” However, she says, homeowners should choose color wisely. “If you can keep the color from being the first thing people notice, it can become a neutral." Sherry says her home now reflects her family’s personality. However, because the new design was such a departure from their old design, their children were surprised when they first saw it. “We’ve shocked our kids,” she says with a laugh. “But the kids do love it.” Gale encouraged the couple to display meaningful art from their

When Debbie McMann of Flower Mound asked Lucie to design a wine bar in her home, Lucie knew exactly where it should go. “When people want a wine bar, and if they have stairs in their home, it typically goes under the stairs,” she says. Lucie transformed Debbie’s under-the-stairs closet into an upscale wine bar, utilizing every inch of the space and adding beauty and function. “They told us how much wine they have, what they collect and what they wanted to store,” Lucie says. “I worked with my cabinet guy to pull all of the functional pieces into the space.” Debbie says she adores her new bar area, which dons a stacked slate backsplash, custom cabinets with Flemish glass doors and lighting to highlight their extensive wine collection. “I love my new space,” she says. “When you can go from a closet under the stairs to that, it’s great. It was a wise use of space.”

After remodeling MaryEllen Miksa’s entire Lewisville home, Lucie was asked to redesign MaryEllen's beloved sewing room. Lucie wanted to make sure MaryEllen had everything she needed at her fingertips when she was working on a project, so she created a large workstation that is the stuff of crafters’ dreams. “Literally, within few square feet, everything is reachable,” Lucie says. The room boasts a large custom-built desk with drawers and cubbies to hold all of MaryEllen's sewing and crafting materials. The desk is elevated so MaryEllen can easily cut fabric. Attached to the large desk is a smaller desk that houses her sewing machine. The back wall accommodates a large, framed pegboard, filled with crafting and sewing tools, and a wall-mounted ironing board. “Working with Lucie was a wonderful experience,” MaryEllen says. “As far as what it’s like to have a sewing room, I think the best part of it all is having everything where I can get to it immediately.” 1.

Lucie says all homeowners can transform their surroundings by making small changes, beginning with paint. “Paint goes a long way,” she says. Lucie suggests going with a neutral gray/beige to create a timeless space. “I believe you always have to think of the future. Is gray the new neutral? Yes, probably,” she says. However, Lucie says it’s best to choose a gray with beige undertones. “It looks great with blue tones, and it also marries well with natural tones like wood floors." In addition, she suggests changing cabinet hardware and

light fixtures, as well as adding new accessories, such as throw pillows and rugs. But, she advises homeowners not purchase high-end, trendy accessories. “Spend your money where it’s important—on plumbing and appliances. Don’t waste money on accessories, rugs and pic4.

Interior Designer Gale Van Ackeren says the most important part of a bookshelf is the books. “Usually what most people are missing on bookshelves are the books,” she says. Gale recommends visiting Half Price Books and purchasing “books by the yard.” Homeowners can customize the books to fit their color and décor. She says it also is important to be mindful of the way books are placed on the shelves. “Don’t line them up like soldiers. Have some up, some down and some angled,” she says. In addition to books, Gale suggests adding a few meaningful art pieces. But save the family photos for designated “gallery” spaces on walls. “We all like pictures of our children and dogs everywhere, but by sprinkling them throughout the house—it dilutes their artistic value,” she says. Lighting also is key. “It’s important to have appropriate lighting on the shelf,” she says. “Another thing that is a nice touch with bookshelves is to line the back of the shelf with wall covering.” However, she says, make sure and use a subtle wall covering—nothing too bright or busy. When filling a bookshelf, don't forget the books. Vintage-bound books add color and character.
