WHEN YOU THINK OF THE WORD “MAKER,” WHAT COMES TO MIND? A quick Google search offers some ideas: a constructor, a builder, a producer, a designer, an architect, but, in its simplest terms, a person that makes or produces something. In this issue, you'll be immersed in articles that focus on just that: makers—people who produce things. You'll see it in the art, food and artisan goods throughout these pages and our community. But this concept of makers is more than just the people who create unique works of art, beautiful (and tasty) cuisine, handcrafted jewelry, textiles or furniture, or goods you can find throughout local boutiques or on locally-maintained Etsy pages.

Students began rehearsing twice a week for this Texas Private School Music Educators Association (TPSMEA) competition right after school began. Students recorded and sent in their auditions to the music “That Which Remains” by Andrea Ramsey and “Domine, Ad Adjuvandum Me Festina” by Padre G. B. Martini. A committee of five judges evaluated the recordings and chose the top students of each voice part from across the state. At the state performance, students were led by conductor, teacher and scholar Sandra Snow, the current conductor of the Michigan State University Women’s Chamber Ensemble. A recent principal conductor at the Festival 500 International Choral Festival in Newfoundland, Canada, Snow is the recipient of the MSU Teacher-Scholar Award and the author of the DVD "Conducting-Teaching: Real World Strategies for Success,” a resource for conductor-teachers at all levels. Snow will also serve as principal guest conductor for the Texas Christian University Chamber Singers tour of Central Europe. At the Eisemann Center, Kyle and Alexis sang “A Prairie Sunset” by Cecil Effinger, “Geistliches Lied, Op. 30” by Johannes Brahms, “Son de Camaguey” by Stephen Hatfield, “Bright Morning Stars” by Shawn Kirchner and “Ezekiel saw de wheel” by Stacey Gibbs.

ARTICLE STEPHANIE HASBROUCK — PHOTOGRAPHY MISSY MAYO

A D AY W I T H M I S S Y M AY O ONE OF FLOWER MOUND'S MOST SOUGHT-AFTER PHOTOGRAPHERS FOR THE PAST SIX YEARS, MISSY MAYO HAS SPENT HER DAYS BEHIND THE CAMERA, FOCUSED ON OTHERS. Ironically, she says, that’s where she discovered herself. 6:00 AM

“Like any other morning, as a mom, I wake up early, chug coffee, get the kids ready and out the door,” she says. Beckett has to be at school by 7:45 a.m. and Reese at preschool by 8:45 a.m.

9:00 AM

After dropping the kids off at school, Missy returns home, edits photographs and blogs. Then she heads to the gym, Burn Boot Camp in Flower Mound, for a quick workout before picking up Reese from preschool.

12:45 PM

Missy picks her daughter up from preschool, then heads to the park for some playtime before picking up Beckett at 2:45 p.m. “We rush home and I prep my camera gear and make sure it’s clean and ready.”

2 HOURS BEFORE SUNSET

Missy arrives at her photo shoot about a half-hour early to scout the location and plan the photos she will take. Typically, she tells her clients the session will last an hour. “We usually are having fun playing, and at sunset, the light is so beautiful, I usually want to take one more shot,” she says, so the session runs about a half-hour over.

7:30 PM

Missy uploads her photos and tucks her children into bed.

9:00 PM

Missy edits her photographs, deciding which images to deliver to clients.

From-Scratch Pasta Yield: 1 pound WHAT YOU NEED

2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 4 large eggs WHAT YOU DO

1. Mound the flour in the center of a work surface with a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and beat with a fork until smooth, then work flour into eggs with the fork. Use a bench scraper to work in the rest of the flour a little at a time. When the flour is incorporated, form the dough with your hands into a rounded mass for kneading. Lightly dust your workspace with flour and knead dough about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough with a bowl or plastic wrap and rest 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight. 2. To roll by hand, flour a clean work surface. Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent. 3. MARCUS HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR AIMEE YUN SEES THE WORLD THROUGH MULTIDIMENSIONAL ART LAYERS AND HAS DONE SO SINCE SHE WAS A TODDLER. Art is now how Aimee conveys what's in her soul and on her mind. "Art is a way of expressing my emotions, and delivering any kind of messages, or theme, to viewers," she says. "Because art is a form of communication, it's one of the most powerful tools to connect with audiences on deeper levels." Since Aimee was young, her parents gave her freedom to search for what she loved doing. "They both realized I'd fallen in love with art, and began to help me become an artist. Because both of my parents were interested in fine arts, they gave me criteria and advice," she says. "I personally think my art style is very different from my parents' style, apart from them helping me improve my skills." Aimee is a big fan of painting, especially oil. "Oil is very flexible to work with because it dries a lot slower than other mediums. I also really enjoy using charcoal, pens, ink and watercolor," she adds. During sixth to ninth grade, she won awards for the Martin Luther King Jr. Art Competition hosted by Lewisville Independent School District. She also became one of the top finalists in VASE, a Texaswide art competition, during her sophomore year. When it's hard for Aimee to express her emotions through words, she says she shows affection toward others through art. "I like to draw portraits of people I love. I believe the time and effort I put it into the portraits shows my gratitude toward them," she says. "Art is a way for me to storytell about my mistakes, experiences and what I've learned from them. I truly want to express thankfulness through art to others. I think that's why I love art." She hopes to major in art illustration in college, with her dream
