AS NOVEMBER ROLLS AROUND, WE’RE EAGERLY AWAITING THE APPROACH OF THANKSGIVING, THE HOLIDAY SEASON AND TIME SPENT WITH OUR LOVED ONES. The winding down of the year always brings about a time of self-reflection —remembering everything we’ve accomplished in months past, considering the good fortune we’ve enjoyed and/or the tough roads we’ve navigated. Hopefully, this reflection is always accompanied by a thankful spirit—thankful for the journey and the lessons we learn. This past year has been an incredible journey for me, personally, as we will be celebrating the one-year anniversary of Cross Timbers Lifestyle this month! I am so incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve in this community, and to meet and support wonderful local business owners, marketing partners, philanthropic gurus, community leaders and our amazing families and readers. This community is special, and I treasure the friendships that have been formed or deepened this past year. I’ve been touched by each of you and have welcomed the challenge and opportunity to educate, inspire and connect Southern Denton County readers in a new and unique way. Thank you to my fabulous contributors and mentors along the way. And thank you,

Construction on these upgrades is scheduled to begin in the spring and will be completed by late summer or early fall 2019. Once the plans are finalized, the town will announce the playground themes. Meanwhile, the new Canyon Falls Park is on the horizon. CARA PRICE OF THE NOURISHED BODY AND SOUL SHARES TWO FAVORITE HEALTHY HOLIDAY RECIPES

THAN
ONE—ESPECIALLY
DURING
THE HOLIDAYS. “I grew up with a large extended family, so for me, food has always been a big part of enjoying the holidays with family and friends,” she says. Cara has continued the tradition with her own family. “We have very special memories of cooking and baking for holidays, and those are the times that really matter.” This month, Cara shares two pumpkin-inspired recipes, including her elegant gingersnap pumpkin trifle. “Since I love dessert, I wanted to be able to share a healthy, holiday-inspired flavor,” she says. “The pumpkin trifle combines three layers of individual flavors that together create a delightful and distinctive dessert infusion. When served in mason jars, this pumpkin trifle can take on a casual, vintage feel, or it can be served in nicer ramekins to dress it up.” Cara believes in a whole foods-based, nutrient-dense approach to eating. Her recipes reflect her dedication to foods that are found in nature. For more recipes and inspiration, visit TheNourishedBodyAndSoul.com. Cara Price of The Nourished Body and Soul believes cooking is an important holiday tradition.

(NOT)HOME FOR THE HOLI DAYS WHILE THE COMMUNITY CELEBRATES, THESE LOCAL RESPONDERS KEEP WATCH
THE HOLIDAYS ARE A JOYFUL TIME WHEN FAMILY AND FRIENDS GATHER TO CELEBRATE AND COUNT THEIR
BLESSINGS. For our community’s first responders, a holiday is another opportu-
nity to save a life or protect the vulnerable. This month, Cross Timbers Lifestyle features three community members who, along with their dedicated colleagues, spend every day—even holidays—helping those in need. We are especially thankful for their selflessness, bravery and dedication.

Derek Doyle
Derek has been a member of the Highland Village Fire Department for almost eight years. He and his wife, Lauren, are expecting their first child in January. HAVE YOU HAD TO MISS MANY HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS AT HOME BECAUSE OF WORK OBLIGATIONS? Yes, I have had to miss numerous holiday celebrations due to work. This is understood when coming into the field. My dad is a driver/operator with the Lake Cities Fire Department and has been for over 20 years now, so I grew up in the fire service knowing what it was like to not have a parent around for every holiday. Every individual and their family understand the sacrifices that will be made when signing up for this profession. WHEN YOU MUST WORK DURING THE HOLIDAYS, HOW DOES YOUR UNIT CELEBRATE TOGETHER? Holidays at the firehouse don’t always have to be viewed as a bad thing. Missing family gatherings is not something anyone wants to do. The firehouse is literally referred to as a second home or home away from home. With this being said, we do our best to make holidays special for ourselves as well as our families. It is also a good time for our wives and kids to come together and get to know each other better. We typically put together big meals for

Kim Daniels
Kim is a registered nurse who is certified in inpatient obstetrics. She has worked at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Flower Mound for three years and has been a nurse for seven years. She has three children, Abigail, Aiden and Branden. WHEN YOU MUST WORK DURING THE HOLIDAYS, HOW DOES YOUR UNIT CELEBRATE TOGETHER? Our unit definitely celebrates together! We have done full-on Thanksgiving dinner in our break room with only a toaster oven and microwave! Nurses can improvise quite well! We also try to make holidays fun like gift exchanges, dressing up, etc. HOW DOES IT FEEL KNOWING YOU ARE DOING SUCH AN IMPORTANT JOB FULFILLING THE NEEDS OF OTHERS DURING THE HOLIDAYS? Even though some days are harder than others, I truly love and am honored to do what I do, so I have no problem sacrificing to help others, and my family understands this also. In fact, my children think my job is exceptionally cool! So much so, that my daughter plans to go to Texas Tech’s nursing program next year when she starts college … At the end of the day, I get to see new life come into this world every day I come to work, even on holidays, and even nearly eight years later, I can honestly say it still amazes me. I mean, how can that not be amazing? 20

Tony has worked for the city of Dallas as a firefighter, certified paramedic and HAZMAT technician for four years. He and his wife, Nicole, live in Flower Mound with their two daughters, Addison and Avery. WHAT SPECIAL FAMILY TRADITIONS OR CELEBRATIONS DO YOU PLAN AROUND YOUR WORK SCHEDULE? In our house, we believe that time together as a family is the most important, so we’ve been known to delay the celebration a day, or we celebrate it early. One special family tradition we have in the Wragge household is what we like to call “Friends-Giving.” It’s a time around the holidays that my wife and I like to get everyone together in the fire and first responder services. We have a great meal, share stories and have close family, including spouses and children, come together for a time we can celebrate. HOW DOES IT FEEL KNOWING YOU ARE DOING SUCH AN IMPORTANT JOB FULFILLING THE NEEDS OF OTHERS DURING THE HOLIDAYS? Working on a holiday can be very busy because most families are at home; we are at work, so that means answering the call. It’s a gratifying feeling to know that we can serve people in their time of need … Serving people doesn’t stop at 10 p.m. at night, midnight or even 1 in the morning. It goes on until the sun comes up. The bells ring, and we answer the call.

THE HOLIDAY TABLE DESIGNER KRISTY MASTRANDONAS CREATES TABLESCAPES WORTHY OF THE MOST MEMORABLE OCCASIONS

Kristy’s children’s tablescape is lighthearted but sophisticated. “I want the kids to feel like they have their very own version of a grown-up table," she says.
“I love to have beautiful tablescapes set up throughout the year,” Kristy says. “Whether it’s decorated for the season or a special occasion, there’s just something so warm and welcoming about a beautifully set table.” Kristy suggests hosts first determine what type of event they will be holding. “Is it formal, informal, casual, buffet-style? Once you’ve determined this, then I suggest deciding on a place setting—placemats, chargers, dinnerware, etc.,” Kristy says. “When deciding on your centerpiece decor, keep in mind that you want your guests to be able to see one another across the table so they can easily carry on a conversation.” She suggests keeping center decor height either low—no more than 12 inches tall—or high—more than 20 inches tall. “Of course, design rules are not set in stone, and there are times to push the envelope. I myself push the envelope and break the rules all the time. Oftentimes those are the instances that I achieve something spectacular,”
Kristy infuses her personality into all of her tablescapes. She says it's important for hosts to give guests a glimpse of their personal style.
she says. “So don’t be afraid to mix things up or to experiment. Have fun, and let your personality shine through.” One way hosts can let their personality shine through is by incorporating whimsical, nontraditional items in their tablescapes.“I love using items that I already own in unexpected ways, especially items that perform double duties, like a throw scarf,” Kristy says. “The idea to use throws and scarves as part of my table decor was born out of the desire to interject my personality into my tablescapes when I couldn’t find tablecloths that fit the image I was looking for. And the fact that I already owned these items meant that I was saving money too.” Kristy suggests hosts use their imagination and be creative. “It’s fairly easy to create tablescapes when you allow yourself to think outside the box. A floral centerpiece is always pretty and appropriate, but it doesn’t have to stop there,” she says. “Push the envelope, and do something unexpected. Most homeowners CONTINUED >

have candles and candleholders, books and other decorative objects that can be part of the tablescape too.” She also advises purchasing items that can perform double duty. “Some great items to invest in for your holiday table— aside from dishware, fine china and glassware—are table linens, chargers and decor items that have multipurpose uses. For example, I have a set of Christmas placemats that are black on the underside. Since they’re finished off and look just as nice as the right side, I use them during Halloween or any other time I want to use a black placemat. I also have candle holders, vases, as well as many other decorative accessories that I move from room to room all the time,” she says. “ESG Investing, sometimes known as impact investing captures the notion of using non-financial factors that incorporate the environmental impact, social impact and governance attributes of a corporation,” he says. “The data we use helps us to evaluate whether companies run themselves responsibly and consider the environmental impact, such as emissions or resource use; social impact, such as employee training or diversity policies; and governance attributes, such as board structure or shareholder rights.” Jeffery says Merrill Lynch advisors also can construct portfolios that align with individuals’ faith values. Advisors screen companies and avoid those ranking poorly in areas of concern to investors. The result: a socially conscious form of investing that is quickly gaining popularity. Individuals around the world are beginning to demand that their investments reflect their social and environmental values. “We conservatively estimate that inflows into ESG-type strategies over the next few decades could be roughly equivalent to the size of the S&P 500 today,” Jeffery says. “Trends in the U.S. investment landscape indicate that trillions of dollars could be allocated to ESG-oriented equity investments and thus to stocks that are attractive on ESG metrics.” He says ESG investing is a smart way to invest. “In addition to potential inflows, ESG investing has worked. What if we told you that we could help you to identify the following: stocks less likely to go bankrupt over the next five years; stocks less likely to have large price declines; stocks less likely to have earnings decline or increased EPS volatility; stocks that were likely to become high-quality stocks; stocks that were likely to see extreme inflows over the next few decades; stocks with three-year returns significantly better than their peers?” As for risks involved with ESG investing, Jeffery says, “In general and always, risk and return potential varies depending on investment type. They should be considered and discussed with your advisor before making any decisions.” For more information, contact Merrill Lynch Wealth Management Advisor Jeffery Price of the Southlake office at 817.410.4940.
