ello friends and neighbors, and welcome to the premiere issue of Cross Timbers Lifestyle, where we’re inspired by community, and hope this magazine inspires you, too! We’re thrilled to be your source for all things local here in the southern Denton County area–a gorgeous and inspiring place to call home. As part of the Cross Timbers Texas region, our community has a rich history. Two narrow bands of forest that extended south of Oklahoma into Central Texas divided the plains and prairies and became known as the Cross Timbers. Native Americans called the area home and later as pioneers pushed into Texas, the bands of timber served as a famous landmark. That same pioneer spirit is alive and well in our community today–whether you live in Flower Mound or Copper Canyon, we are all still seeking – opportunity, love, wisdom. Through the pages of Cross Timbers Lifestyle, it is our goal to educate and enrich you and to have a little fun along the way. As you flip through these pages, you’ll be drawn into the incredible stories behind the people and places that call our community home. In my short stint as publisher, I’ve already been awestruck by the talented, hardworking men and women who passionately serve the community through their local business and philanthropic endeavors. There is no shortage of people working very hard every day to make this community stronger–making sure our schools are better supported, our churches open and welcoming, that needs are met for the less fortunate. As we take the time to put our issues together from month to month, you—the Cross Timbers Lifestyle readers—will always be in our minds. We strive to bring you the good and relevant news of the day and to fill the pages of this magazine with the people and stories you care about—and we can’t wait for you to join us each month. FMS Theatre will perform “Booby Trap” for a University Interscholastic League One-Act Play competition on November 1 at Lewisville High School. Two back-to-back public performances of “Booby Trap” and “Women and War” are set for 6 p.m. November 9 at 6 p.m. at Forestwood Middle School, 2810 Morriss Road. Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults.

BRIDLEWOOD ELEMENTARY EGG-DROP EXPERIMENT REACHES NEW HEIGHTS Bridlewood Elementary fifth-graders participated in a memorable lesson to test their question and collaboration skills by creating a contraption to safely land an egg unscathed after being dropped from various heights. This year, Bridlewood Principal Robin Block and fifth-grade science teacher Patricia Jordan wanted to take the lesson to greater heights—literally. Enter Flower Mound Fire Department firefighters from Station 4. First, student groups were challenged to create and design a contraption that would prevent a raw egg from cracking when dropped from 25, 35 and 50 feet by an FMFD firefighter at the top of a fire engine’s extended ladder. “We knew it was going to be exciting, but to see the students’ faces when the ladder went all the way to 50 feet was amazing,” Jordan says. “We had a great time helping out with the egg-drop experiment,” Flower Mound Fire Department Captain Ronnie McCarroll says. “The excitement each student showed during their experiments was a lot of fun to see.”

Through designing their own contraptions with no more than three materials of their choice, students were able to discover the difference between testable questions and non-testable questions. In addition, they were able to expand on learning to collaborate with one another to create a design and construct it together. “I feel that having to collaborate will help them in the future with jobs and with everyday living,” Jordan says. “Students had to get out of their comfort zone and work with others that maybe they had never worked with before.” Even if their designs failed, students were more than thrilled to participate in the experience. “It was so much fun to watch other students’ creativity in their egg contraptions, and it didn’t really matter if it worked or not because we

hen hairstylist Zairy Portillo first walked through the double doors of Rogers

Premier Salon Suites in Flower Mound, her jaw dropped. “This is gorgeous! The entry is so pretty!” she thought, not expecting to be met with such grandeur. At the time, she worked at a nearby salon and witnessed the property transform from a UFC Gym to a one-stop shop for beauty needs. Her curiosity led her to investigate the new facility, and she made up her mind on the spot. “I thought, ‘This is it! I can make this my own,'” she says. Owners Ed and Michele Rogers wanted to take the salon-suite concept up a notch. “We want to be the Neiman-Marcus for salon and medical professionals,” says Michele, who was a hairstylist long before she became a business owner. “I started off in a commission-based salon putting myself through school. There was never anything like this.” The $2 million build-out was completed in July at Robertson’s Creek, a retail development on the border of Highland Village and Flower Mound. Located at the southwest corner of Long Prairie and Dixon Roads, its flagship stores include Belk’s, Hobby Lobby, Dick’s Sporting Goods and JCPenney.

Michele chose serene moodscapes to grace the walls and added touches of greenery. “We didn’t want it to be trendy or modern, but elegant and comfortable,” she says. “Our goal is to be the best of salon studios,” Ed, a former president of Jack LaLanne European Health Spas, says. He and Michele retired a few years ago as partners of All American Family Fitness before becoming interested in the

salon-suite concept. “We provide facilities for hair, skin, nails, massage—for all kinds of beauty professionals,” he explains. “Our goal is to provide the ultimate atmosphere to showcase their skills.” Fifty-four suites line the hallways of the 11,000-squarefoot facility. The rooms give beauty professionals, like Zairy, the opportunity to independently run their own small businesses. They can set their own rates, sell their own products and keep 100 percent of their profits. There are “quiet” suites specifically for massage, skin care and medical treatments, and ventilated suites for nail operators. Already, the salon suite is at two-thirds capacity. “It’s like a salon in a salon,” says Sandy Jones, a client from Lantana, who, along with her friends, enjoys the convenience of shopping at nearby Robertson’s Creek. She appreciates that walls separate her from other clients during appointments so she can comfortably converse with her hairstylist without being overheard. “Close the blinds! Shut the door!” she laughs.

Lash Out Loud owner Britney Franklin sought to rent space in the area when she stumbled upon Rogers Premier Salon Suites. Britney provides niche services, specifically eyelash and hair extensions, and this is her first time to strike out on her own. She called her decision a “leap of faith,” but added, “you don’t know what you can do until you try.” Owning her own business allows Britney the flexibility to create her own schedule and to take time to do detailed, quality work. As opposed to a fast-paced, commission-based setting, “being in a suite makes that possible,” she says.

It’s best if they can fall asleep,” she says. She brought in her own special touches: a soft pink office chair on rollers, a matching knitted blanket and Pinterest-inspired wall décor. “Our salons are usually two to three sizes larger than most suite salons, which allows us to have competitive rates,” Ed says. Rogers Premier Salon Suites offers 24-hour security and has a full-time, on-site manager/concierge who makes sure tenants and clients feel welcome. “We want them to feel respected and special because they are special.”

Pastry chef Cara Vasquez grew up a self-described “baking kid” influenced by her mother, a talented home economics teacher. Cara’s passion led her to culinary school and a 10-year career at Bread Winners in Dallas, where she served as bakery manager. In 2011, Cara’s dream became a reality when she opened the doors to The Flour Shop Bakery in Highland Village. Cara makes amazing cakes, pies, cookies, bars, brownies, breads and many other bakery treats. It’s important to her that a wide variety is kept on hand for folks to drop in for a sweet treat. Cara keeps things traditional—the way her mom taught her—and is fulfilled when someone tells her that something she baked evokes a long-held memory, perhaps something their grandmother made. "For us, it’s about creating something special," Cara says. "It’s about awakening a memory or emotion.” During Thanksgiving, pies are best-sellers. The traditional favorites are pumpkin and pecan, but they receive many requests for strawberry rhubarb also. Chocolate cream and coconut cream pie are also very popular and can be made with meringue as a special request. Everything is made on-site and from scratch using only the best ingredients. Cara says it’s a marathon the day before Thanksgiving with chefs baking all night, but it’s worth it to be part of their customer’s holiday. Special orders are recommended. And, while you can still visit Cara and the team at their present location for Thanksgiving, soon the store will be moving down the street near Firehouse Subs. The new space is double in size, and more breakfast and dessert items will be available, plus additional seating where customers can gather.

Judy Balunda didn’t set out to open a pie shop. After 25 years teaching special education, she retired in 2013 from Grapevine Middle School and was looking forward to some well-deserved time off. Instead, she began baking pies, using her mother’s well-loved recipes. When the requests and raves became increasingly louder, Judy knew she might be looking at a second chapter. She continued to hone her pastry skills, even completing a Le Cordon Bleu pie-making course. Judy Pie just celebrated one year in business in Old Town Grapevine. Judy laughingly recalls, “We handed out 16,000 pie samples during Grapefest 2016. Then, we closed for a week and re-opened to the public.” They haven’t slowed down since. Chefs bake daily on-site utilizing only the freshest, from scratch ingredients. And while sweet pies are the name of the game with everyday favorites chocolate cream, key lime, strawberry rhubarb and coconut cream, Judy Pie also offers savory selections—chicken pot pie and shepherd’s pie—and some phenomenal hand pies–Nutella, strawberry goat cheese and bourbon maple peach to name a few. Pumpkin and pecan pie are Thanksgiving highlights, and most of Judy’s recipes are courtesy of her mother, Rhoda. However, the Judy Pie chefs will also bake custom pies for customers, using family recipes handed down or seasonal twists on old favorites. Judy’s goal for Judy Pie was to create a warm and inviting place where customers can meet for book cub, enjoy dessert after dinner or just pick up a slice of heaven to go. Mission accomplished! awkwardly shaped vegetable. You start by cutting the squash in half lengthwise and roasting it in a hot oven. Scrape the roasted flesh from the skin, and simmer it with sautéed yellow onion, fresh sage, and a tart Granny Smith apple. When everything’s soft and the flavors have melded, purée it all in the blender. Finally, enrich the soup with a bit of heavy cream.

1. Heat the oven to 425°F and arrange a rack in the middle. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place the squash pieces cut-side up on the baking sheet. Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter and brush all of it over the tops and insides of the squash halves (alternatively, you can rub it on evenly with your fingers). Season generously with salt and pepper. Roast until knife tender, 50 minutes to 1 hour. 2. Meanwhile, peel, core, and cut the apple into medium dice. Cut the onion into medium dice. Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter in a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the apple, onion, and sage, season with salt and pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened,

They were well cared for and simply beautiful animals. As a true Texas legend, you know by the casual and confident drawl, Willie shared his Christian faith with us in a number of colorful stories from the past of his cowboy life. INSTRUCTIONS 1. Place the cinnamon sticks and fruit into a large pitcher. Add wine, apple cider, brandy, orange juice and lemon juice. Allow to sit in the refrigerator anywhere from 3 to 24 hours; 6-8 hours is best! 2. Pour the sangria and fruit into glasses. Add a splash of club soda. Garnish with a cinnamon stick, if desired.
