LIFESTYLE LETTER

“Fashion is over quickly. Style is forever.” —Ralph Lauren Welcome to the Style Issue! Style is your personal way of looking, doing, living, and behaving. Fashion is simply one evolving piece of that personal expression—it is in the way you move, how you speak, how you treat people, and how you approach life. You might say this magazine is a buffet of options designed to help you choose, refine, or enhance your unique style. That style shows up in every corner of life. Story Built Homes creates remarkable, award-winning homes to support the way you live. A Texas flag painted on your barn shows your love of Texas. Or maybe your style centers around compassionate care for others, like our volunteers at Meals on Wheels or Hands of Justice. How do you choose to spend your time? Would you rather go to a Comedy Headliners Show at Margaritaville, or dance your way over to see Footloose at the Crighton Theatre? Would you prefer wearing a white tuxedo or gown to the Athena Awards supporting our local women community leaders, or tackling a challenging, three-mile obstacle-laden mud run? (Or maybe both?) Here is a trick to streamline your closet: figure out what percentage of your time you spend in different activities. If you spend 50% of your time at a desk job, 30% on casual weekends, 10% working out, and 10% at formal events, your wardrobe should match those exact percentages. Otherwise, you are just wasting space. A few things I have learned along the way: • Tailoring is key. A medium-priced, well-tailored suit looks much better than an expensive, poor-fitting one. • Skip the big logos. Personally, I dislike shirts with boring clothing logos like Polo. I would rather wear a shirt from a concert or a favorite hole-in-the-wall restaurant. • Balance comfort and fashion. I once wore cowboy boots around Vegas, and my knees were killing me. Always consider comfort. Ladies love the high heels, but try slipping a pair of "pocket flats" into your purse can save your feet between grand entrances. Shakespeare said it best, "To thine own self be true," that is style in a nutshell. Know who you are, then show the world your true self. Be honest, but gentle with your truth. It is easier in the long run and pays dividends. Be kind to those you do not have to be kind to. And, like the title of Arnold Schwarzenegger's book says: Be Useful. STAR POWER,

THE COLLINS PLAN SHINES WITH THREE STAR AWARDS FOR ARCHITECTURE, EXECUTION AND EVERYDAY ELEGANCE.

ARTICLE BY CONNIE MONROE

The great room brings vaulted beams, natural light and open sightlines together in a warm, welcoming space designed for gathering.

The best homes are not defined by the finishes they showcase, the appliances they feature or the floor plans they follow. They offer something far less tangible: an unspoken invitation, an immediate sense of belonging and the familiar warmth of an old friend. Before anyone notices the ceiling height, custom cabinetry or details, the home has already spoken. Sunlight falls exactly where it should. Rooms welcome one another. The kitchen invites conversation long before dinner is served. Nothing feels accidental, yet nothing feels overdesigned. That balance between beauty and livability lies at the heart of Story Built Homes, the Conroe-based, women-led custom homebuilder honored with three 2026 Texas Association of Builders Star Awards. The company’s Collins plan earned statewide recognition for Best Architectural Design ($750,000–$1 million), Best New Custom Home and Best Owner Suite (both $775,000–$1 million). The architectural story begins before the front door opens. The Collins balances old-world character with modern, intelligent design. Brick gives the home permanence, while wood and stone accents add warmth and texture. Carefully placed windows bring sunlight into the architecture rather than treating it as an afterthought. The result feels established without appearing dated and distinctive without separating itself from its surroundings. It has enough presence to make an impression and enough restraint to remain welcoming. That balance helps explain the Collins plan’s recognition for Best Architectural Design. Successful architecture is more than an attractive elevation or unusual roofline. It shapes how people approach a home, move through it and connect one room to another. The Collins was created with architect Matt Hartman and the Coton House Design Team. As Chief Experience Officer, Chastity White helps guide homeowners from their earliest conversations through the process of creating and completing a home. “I’m listening for what really lights them up,” White says. She often asks homeowners what they would take with them from their current home, a question that helps reveal what matters most to them. CONTINUED >

Glossy blue tile gives the shower a rich sense of depth, texture and handcrafted character.

Story Built Homes celebrates three statewide honors at the 2026 Texas Association of Builders Star Awards in San Antonio. From left: Matt Hartman, The Collins architect, H4 Design Services; Rachel Rost and Chastity White, Story Built Homes; Sarah Prazak, Monogram Appliances; and D’Ann Brown, StrucSure Home Warranty.

A custom home may be shaped by thousands of choices, yet the most meaningful decisions begin before colors, fixtures and finishes enter the conversation. They begin with questions about family, routines, traditions and the small moments that give daily life its rhythm. Will the kitchen become the center of every gathering? Does the family need a quiet place to begin the morning? Where will guests gather, children play and holidays unfold? The Collins reflects that attention to the life of the home. Its spaces are refined without becoming formal and elegant without losing warmth. The plan makes a visual impression, yet its strongest qualities emerge in the everyday moments it was designed to support. At the center of the home, the kitchen serves as both workspace and gathering place. Generous surfaces, thoughtful storage and an open relationship with the surrounding living areas allow conversation to flow as naturally as meal preparation. It can accommodate a quiet weekday breakfast as comfortably as a house filled for the holidays. Family members can gather around the island while dinner is prepared. Its beauty never overshadows its purpose. That same relationship between appearance and experience helps explain the Collins plan’s recognition as Best New Custom Home. Unlike an award devoted to one room or detail, this honor considers the residence as a whole. Architecture, construction, materials, flow and function must work together.

14

M UST SE E | HO M E + DESIGN

The dining room’s layered lighting, natural textures and open sightlines reflect the Collins plan’s balance of style and everyday livability.

Under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Rachel Rost, that larger vision comes down to “where function and beauty meet.” Each room has its own purpose, yet every space belongs to the same home. Colors, textures, fixtures and architectural details work with confidence rather than competition. Materials repeat thoughtfully. Sightlines create visual connections. Gathering spaces feel open, while quieter rooms retain privacy and calm. The home feels cohesive without becoming predictable and polished without losing the character of the people who may live there. Perhaps that is one of the clearest definitions of lasting style. It is not simply a collection of fashionable choices. It is knowing what belongs, what serves the homeowner and what will continue to feel right long after a particular trend has passed. Nowhere is that balance more personal than in the Collins plan’s award-winning owners suite. The suite offers a quieter expression of luxury. Rather than relying on excess, it creates a sense of retreat through proportion, privacy, natural light and carefully layered materials. The bedroom and bath feel connected, calm and removed from the faster pace of the home’s gathering spaces. It is designed as a gentle transition away from the demands of the day—a place to begin the morning slowly or find a few moments of quiet before evening ends. That kind of luxury is measured not

The richly layered study brings warmth, character and a refined sense of purpose to the Collins plan.

16

M UST SE E | HO M E + DESIGN

“We’re in the relationship by how loudly a room announces itself, but by how naturally it serves the person living there. Recognition for Best Owners Suite completes the story told by the other two awards. Best Architectural Design honors the vision. Best New Custom Home recognizes its execution throughout the residence. Best Owners Suite celebrates the deeply personal experience created within it. Together, the three honors reveal a home designed at every scale—from the broad architectural gesture to the private moment at the end of the day. That personal connection is what makes custom homebuilding different. Families are not merely selecting a floor plan or comparing finishes. They are deciding where birthdays will be celebrated, where friends will gather, where children may grow up and where ordinary evenings will become part of the family’s history. These moments do not appear on a blueprint, yet they are the reason the blueprint matters. Story Built Homes approaches the process through conversation. Rather than beginning with a predetermined look, the company first seeks to understand how each family wants to live. The goal is not simply to build an impressive house, but to create one in which the homeowner can recognize something of themselves. The company’s name captures the idea clearly. Every home begins with the people who will live inside it, and every family brings a story of its own. Although the Star Awards place Story Built Homes on a statewide stage, the company remains rooted in Conroe and Montgomery County.

business, and we happen to build homes.” — Rachel Rost, CEO The Collins stands out because its architecture, construction and interior experience were never treated as separate exercises. Each contributes to one complete point of view—a home built around comfort, connection and enduring style. Through design, construction, customer experience and a deeply personal approach to the process, the women leading Story Built Homes have created a place where beautiful homes begin with listening. Long after the trophies have found their place on a shelf, the Collins will continue doing exactly what it was designed to do. Its kitchen will host conversations. Its rooms will witness celebrations. Its owners suite will offer quiet refuge at the end of busy days. These awards mark a moment of exceptional achievement in design. The lasting reward unfolds in the years that follow, as families fill those rooms with life, make the house their home and write their own happily ever after. Connie Monroe writes about the people, places and ideas shaping life in and around Montgomery County, Texas. connie.monroe@luxurycougar.com

Story Built Homes’ Collins plan earned three 2026 Texas Association of Builders Star Awards: Best Architectural Design, Best New Custom Home and Best Owners Suite. The Conroebased, women-led builder approaches each project through conversation, balancing strong architectural vision with craftsmanship and everyday livability. From its welcoming exterior to its private retreat, the Collins works as one complete home, thoughtfully designed, beautifully built and ready for each family to make it their own. The Lone Star Flag’s bold geometry and singular star make it one of Texas’ most recognizable symbols.

Tex a s-Si zed St yle Born in the Republic, the Lone Star firmly plants Montgomery’s flag in the Texas story. Montgomery tells the story through Charles Bellinger Stewart, a physician, public servant and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Stewart moved to Montgomery in 1837, and local tradition has long connected him to the flag’s creation. That connection lives throughout the community. A Stewart-associated drawing is preserved in the state archives. A copy is displayed at the N.H. Davis Pioneer Complex and Museum, and a bronze statue of Stewart stands at Cedar Brake Park. Historians continue to study the design’s authorship, while Montgomery’s place in the story has become part of Texas civic memory. In 1997, the Texas House formally commemorated Montgomery County as the flag’s birthplace. As Texas approaches its bicentennial, the symbol remains big and bright as the stars at night, fixed deep in the heart of every Texan. In 1836, the single fivepointed star was adopted as the Republic’s “peculiar emblem.” Nearly two centuries later, the Lone Star Flag still hollers Texas.

The Texas flag carries the confidence of the state it represents. A single white star commands a field of blue, balanced by broad bands of white and red. Its clean geometry, colors and unmistakable silhouette create an image that feels strong, independent and Texan. That clarity is part of its power. The flag is instantly recognizable from a courthouse lawn, a front porch or a highway. Blue speaks to loyalty, white to purity and red to bravery, while the lone star stands for Texas itself. Its modern form became official during the Republic of Texas. In December 1838, Senator William H. Wharton introduced legislation containing the design that became the national flag. Congress approved the measure in January 1839, and President Mirabeau B. Lamar signed it days later. The artwork preserved by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission was drawn by Peter Krag. His rendering of the flag and seal remains the strongest surviving visual record of the flag’s adoption.

A framed Lone Star Flag brings texture and unmistakable Texas character to the familiar design.

The Texas state seal centers the Lone Star within live oak and olive branches, symbols of strength and peace.

William H. Wharton’s proposed flag design paired blue-and-white stripes with an English Union Jack and a radiant lone star.

Peeking under the hood of Meals on Wheels in Conroe

At its core, Meals on Wheels Montgomery County is dedicated to a singular, vital mission: enriching the lives of local seniors by delivering nutritious meals, warm companionship, and safety checks directly to homebound neighbors across a vast 1,000 square miles of Montgomery County. Operating from Conroe for over 54 years, this non-profit relies on dedicated volunteers to cook and deliver chef-crafted lunches daily. Yet their compassionate touch extends far beyond daily hot plates. When volunteers noticed seniors sharing their food with their four-legged companions, they launched the AniMeals Program, delivering dog and cat food so no neighbor has to choose between their own nutrition and their pet’s. Recognizing mobility challenges, they also provide free, reliable transportation for medical visits and essential errands. They even deliver birthday presents, free books to read and often borrow board games to play with seniors. For both volunteers and seniors their visit is often the highlight of their day. They also store emergency 7-day meal kits—packed with shelf-stable food, flashlights, and waterproof document pouches—ensuring seniors remain safe during Texas disasters. In Conroe, true style comes from lifting one another up. Through daily deliveries, pet care, transit, and crisis planning, Meals on Wheels proves that compassionate service never goes out of style. Finding the right outfit for each personality.

FASHION FOR FREEDOM Runway of Restoration, The Hands of Justice Fashion Show of Overcomers Showcasing the Latest in Fashion Trends

FASH ION F OR WA R D | L I F E + CU LT U RE

True style is a celebration of confidence and movement. On September 17, remarkable women step onto the Hyatt Regency Conroe runway for Fashion for Freedom, turning curated design into a powerful movement of restored identity, dignity, and grace.

Ana, Katrina, CJ, Dawn and Skye

A RUNWAY OF RESTORATION: FASHION FOR FREEDOM When a group of overcomers walk the runway at the Hyatt Regency in Conroe, every step represents more than seasonal trends—it marks a profound personal victory. Fashion for Freedom brings local luxury back to its highest purpose: empowering women to step into their strength. The magic on the runway comes alive through extraordinary community collaboration. Outfits are carefully sourced through Hand Me Up Resale (Interfaith of the Woodlands) and Unique Resale (Community Assistance Center), alongside apparel partner Cabi. Professional Cabi stylists work personally with each model to curate custom, head-to-toe looks tailored to her unique personality. In a gesture of pure generosity, Cabi gifts every ensemble directly to the models to keep—equipping them with versatile wardrobe staples and renewed self-assurance as they pursue new career and personal milestones. As music fills the ballroom, postures lift and eyes light up. The applause isn't just for the clothing; it celebrates pure resilience and joy. THE HEART BEHIND THE STYLE: HANDS OF JUSTICE This transformative afternoon is hosted by Hands of Justice, a Conroe-area 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated

to anti-trafficking efforts across Greater Houston. Because major regional transit corridors make our area a focal point for human trafficking, the organization’s survivor-led work provides vital local healing through three primary pillars: • Survivor Care: Peer support groups, basic needs assistance, and GED scholarships that help overcomers rebuild their lives from the ground up. • Economic Empowerment: Professional career advising and second-chance employment partnerships fostering long-term financial independence. • Community Awareness: Prevention education for parents and local leaders, including navigating modern digital safety and online grooming risks. Beyond the runway, Hands of Justice provides emergency Freedom Bags through Houston Methodist Hospital and works to secure The Hawthorne House, a permanent sanctuary and resource facility for local survivors. Style is most striking when it elevates others. Join us to support these brave young models and experience an inspiring afternoon of community and hope. • Date: Thursday, September 17 | 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM Location: Hyatt Regency Conroe (Grand Central Ballroom) Visit handsofjustice.org to purchase tickets, volunteer, or support the movement.
