Happy New Year! I hope this issue finds you recovering from a busy yet wonderful holiday season spent celebrating with family and friends. Since that scenario often comes with overindulgence on multiple fronts, now is the time to reset. This month we are taking time to regroup and think about our overall health and wellness. Within these pages, you will find suggestions on how to help both your body and mind. In addition to all of our community information that helps you stay connected to our local happenings, we share a smoothie recipe fit for a president, looks that can take you to the gym and beyond, and trends in med spa treatments. We also explain how the owner of FITNESS PROJECT learned that building connections in the community are just as important as keeping your body strong. In another article, we examine the healing power of art, and finally, we show how Conroe is preparing for the future through the medical training programs offered here. So pick a cozy spot to curl up and read all this issue offers. Or, if you’re on the go, check out the digital versions of these same great stories online.

FITNESS PROJECT SUPPORTS HABITAT FOR HUMANITY AND CASA

16

CEO Bryan Murphy recently celebrated the two-year anniversary of FITNESS PROJECT after evolving as a Gold’s Gym owner for 25 years in Montgomery and Harris Counties. He won every award imaginable and would still be with the Gold’s Gym brand if not for a life-changing and profoundly moving mission trip to Guatemala. He and his wife visited a Guatemalan orphanage filled with hundreds of children, all yearning for a home of their own. The journey led to the adoption of their son, Matteo, and a sense that they could do more.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF FITNESS CLUB “Sitting with my family during a Sunday service, it hit me: What if we could benefit others while experiencing the benefits of the gym? says Murphy. He brainstormed ways to align personal health

goals as part of bigger community projects, especially charities that help families and children. Murphy decided to make changes in his gyms with community service in mind. He chose the name FITNESS PROJECT because everyone has some sort of “fitness project” going on, whether mind, body, or spirit. He also felt that people have a bigger purpose in working out that extends beyond just getting in shape. He wondered what outreaches to support and asked members in his Conroe, Humble, Magnolia, Kingwood, and The Woodlands clubs for ideas. They suggested Habit for Humanity and CASA, among other great nonprofits.

REAL PEOPLE DOING REAL GOOD Habit for Humanity and CASA make a tremendous positive impact on families and children, and FITNESS PROJECT features each in its club and digital communications. Habitat for Humanity, a four-star charity, believes in building strength, stability, self-reliance, and shelter for those in need, and its volunteers help build places people can call home. It brought to mind the Guatemalan orphanage and the notion of home — four walls, family, and safety — and biblically and logically fulfilled the good that Murphy hoped to achieve. CASA’s goal is to provide a Court Appointed Special Advocate® for every foster child in need. When a child enters the foster care system because his or her home is no longer safe, a judge may appoint a committed volunteer to help them. The mission is to help break the cycle

of abuse in our community, one child at a time. This, too, brought to mind the plight of orphans in Guatemala and was another opportunity to help disadvantaged children locally.

THE PROJECT WALL Murphy installed a “Project Wall” at each FITNESS PROJECT location as a platform for awareness, information, and an invitation for members to get involved. It is updated regularly with multiple opportunities to serve or donate online to support various charities. Experiential initiatives are available in any capacity, with additional nonprofits rotating in, such as Go Red for Women for the American Heart Association and Heart Walk Fundraising. “FITNESS PROJECT is intentional about making community projects appealing to everyone without any pressure to donate or attend. We’ve created an environment that showcases opportunities and celebrates community goals and achievements,” says Troy Wise, VP of Marketing.

“If a member wants to contribute, they are welcomed with open arms. We even waive start-up fees or offer special promotions if members provide a discrete contribution of their choosing to support one of our local efforts.” The clubs have raised more than $150,232 (and counting) in contributions for Habitat for Humanity and CASA, and other worthy causes.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF HELPING OTHERS Murphy, Wise, and the FITNESS PROJECT team are firm believers that doing good is good for you. Helping others through a crisis and performing regular acts of kindness boosts physical and mental health. Helping to build a home, volunteering at a food pantry, or raising money for a charity like CASA can also lower stress, lower blood pressure, lessen depression, and result in greater happiness and satisfaction.

It can even cause bursts of euphoria called “the helper’s high” when dopamine and endorphins are released in the brain. The FITNESS PROJECT blog covers these types of topics with fitness tips and more, and an abundance of useful information can be found on the company’s website. “The bottom line is we rise by lifting others,” says Wise. “FITNESS PROJECT puts the unity in community and brings its members together for positive social impact. We are building a culture of health, engagement, and connection to help people transform their lives inside and outside of the gym. We believe there’s power in purpose and that we should focus intentionally on a desired outcome. Combining community causes with exercise offers people a greater purpose than personal health alone; it offers fitness for the whole self. The result? Fulfillment in ourselves, strength in our communities.” FITNESS PROJECT invites everyone to visit a nearby club and enjoy top-of-the-line fitness equipment, expert-guided group classes, studio & team training, premium amenities, and the opportunity to give back. While you’re there, check out the Project Wall and the many ways you can serve. There is no downside to getting fit and bringing positive change to ourselves and others. the art well OF BEING

Like striking a match in the dark, art can illuminate beauty and hope where previously people found nothing but anxiety, stress, and loneliness. Study after study supports the notion that whether you participate directly or view the work of others, art is therapy. Since the mid-20th century, doctors have used art therapy to treat trauma victims. Soldiers returning from World War II suffering from what was known as “shell shock,” now known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), painted, drew, and sculpted art to help process what they’d witnessed and experienced on the battlefield. Research shows that creating art helps PTSD and depression by activating reward pathways in the brain that reduce stress, lower anxiety levels, and improve mood. It can also help improve a patient’s sense of control and even reduce pain. As a result, its use has expanded to include children of war-torn countries and victims of sexual abuse and other trauma. “Experiences like trauma are very difficult to articulate into words,” Girija Kaimal, an art therapist at Drexel University and a president of the American Art Therapy Association, told Smithsonian magazine, “so therapies that can support and connect patients with nonverbal expression are really the foundation of the creative arts therapies.”

THE ESCAPE OF CREATION You don’t have to be a trauma victim for the creation process to help. Melissa Osburg’s life was good until an unannounced anxiety attack changed everything. The fear of having another attack grew to CONTINUED >

“THE STUDY OF NEUROAESTHETICS EXPLORES ARTISTIC BEAUTY’S IMPACT ON THE HUMAN PSYCHE AND PHYSICAL WELL-BEING.”

Melissa Osburg finds the calming effects of creating art

such an extent that she became agoraphobic, too anxious to leave the house. Stumbling upon an online course in neurography art, a practice that uses art as a tool to find peace and create calmness from chaos, helped Melissa immensely, providing an escape and an opportunity to lose herself in something other than the stress of living with anxiety. After someone offered to buy her work from a social media post, Melissa’s confidence grew, and she continued to paint more. She often found inspiration in the joy brought by nature and flowers. “I found my passion. Flowers bring so much joy,” she states. Forming blooms and petals from clay as a 3D element in her paintings, flecks of gold and iridescent finishes create a result reminiscent of vintage fabrics and ornamentation.

HOW AESTHETICS MATTER Increased awareness of the benefits of mindful and engaging experiences with art has caused entities, including museums, arts-based nonprofits, and hospitals, to acknowledge the relationship between arts and wellness. The study of neuroaesthetics explores artistic beauty’s impact on the human psyche and physical well-being. You need to go no further than Houston Methodist The Woodlands to see an example of applying neuroaesthetics. A trip to the hospital usually means you or a loved one is unwell. It’s stressful. To help alleviate the pain and anxiety, when you walk into the facility, you’re greeted by music that echoes through the giant glass atrium and paintings that adorn the walls. In essence, your treatment has already begun. Arts on Prescription, a project backed by the Arts Council of England, has shown that consultation rates dropped by 37% and hospital admissions decreased by 27% when people actively attended galleries and museums. Loneliness is also a public health problem, associated with a 26% increase in the risk of premature death and poorer cardiovascular and mental health outcomes. It should be no surprise that 82% of people feel more connected to their community when engaging with the arts. Whether it is live performances of music, theater or enjoying local galleries to partaking in a multitude of classes, be sure to check out Conroe’s robust Arts scene. `

USTMAX Center, a micro-campus of University of St. Thomas in downtown Conroe, offers Clinical Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy Technician, and Billing and Coding Specialist programs and prepares students for fasttracked careers. Classes are structured so students can work during the day, attend school at night, and quickly enter the workforce. “Students can look forward to potentially higher-paying jobs and earn a living wage. Often it’s a door opener for further training and medical careers,” says Senior Director Carla E. Alsandor, Ph.D. The Phlebotomy Tech program spans intense three-and-a-half weeks, four nights a week, with each class four hours long. The Clinical Medical Assistant program runs for three-and-a-half months with classroom and clinical studies in the same location. In both programs, students practice the skills they are being taught with hands-on lab work. The Billing and Coding Specialist program is completely online, and all classes prepare students for a State exam and licensing.

“Our coursework is very affordable, which is another differentiator when compared to other programs out there,” says Alsandor. Prospective students can learn more at ustmax.com.

SHSU-COM’s student doctors participate in outreach programs in the City of Conroe and Montgomery County, such as a four-day summer camp for 30 high school students, teaching basic clinical skills to the 9th graders last spring, and participating in Miles for Meals Montgomery County, just to name a few. The medical school has increased its class size for the 2022-23 term. Learn more at shsu. edu/academics/osteopathic-medicine/. Lone Star Family Health Clinic is a federally qualified health center offering a full spectrum three-year residency for 32 current residents who have graduated from medical school. Run by the Conroe Family Medicine Residency Program, it offers medical doctors and doctors of osteopathic medicine two unique, optional training tracts — “Medically Underserved” and “Obstetrical” for high and low-risk patients — in addition to traditional curriculum. “Residents learn from the patient population, and faculty who oversee programs and curriculum are also healthcare providers,” says Courtney Galle, Marketing and Communications Manager. “Those completing residency can open their own practices or stay and become providers.” Learn more about this Nationally Recognized Residency Program at lonestarfamily. org/residency-program/.

LEGGINGS 3 WA Y S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

BRUNCH A FTER BA R R E Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. Don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing.

SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist and added fur-lined high tops to provide practical footwear.

Snag some of the key details of the outfits here!
