Style Through the Decades
The theme of this month’s issue is “Style.” I thought I would have some fun with that concept and share my opinion of what was and is considered style as I have lived it. That’s “style,” for better or for worse...
In some ways the 50s were the most conformist and boring in terms of style. When I was a kid, most of us looked like nerds: T-shirts, crew cuts, jeans. Teenagers mostly looked like preppy wannabes. Richie Cunningham lookalikes (remember “Happy Days”?). Women dressed like Donna Reed, even if they did not vacuum the house in high heels and a pearl necklace. Men’s suits were big and baggy, almost shapeless. The homes being built at the start of suburban sprawl were cookie-cutter tract homes.
On the other hand, the second half of the 60s brought an explosion of nonconformity. Rebellion in clothes, hair, outrageous attitudes, and more flexible societal norms, and homes and furnishings became edgier. Even those of us who did not directly participate pretended to do so. The great writer and satirist Tom Wolfe in one of his short stories called it “radical chic.” Just for the record, it didn’t stick. The Baby Boomer generation that set this radical style trend have aged and now look a lot like their parents. How ironic is that?
In the 70s, women looked great. Bell bottom pants, lacy blouses, long hair…a very feminine and classy style. On the other hand, men looked like fools. What looked good on women looked horrible on men. Bell bottoms, poofed-up hair, big-collared shirts unbuttoned down to their navel, wide ties and over-stylized suits. Guys looked like “Soul Train” or Sonny Bono rejects. For 15 years I struggled to find clothes to buy until I finally settled on a traditional British tailored look. I figured the rest of the world could reset itself and find me because I did not want to find them.
Let’s skip over the 80s and 90s other than saying that women’s padded shoulders and big, big hair was “meh.” Here we are in 2024 and all I can say is that backwards baseball caps make your face look like a moon pie with a strap across it, skinny jeans are great on women and really dumb on men and I am still buying traditional British style clothing that never goes out of style. Long live the King!

Why Fixing Up Your House Can Help It Sell Faster
If you’re thinking about selling your house, you should know there are buyers who are ready and able to pay today’s high prices. But they want a home that’s move-in ready. A recent press release from Redfin explains:
“Buyers are still out there and they’re willing to pay today’s high prices, but only if the house is in really good shape. They don’t want to spend extra money on paint or new appliances.”
It makes sense when you think about it. They’re having to pay a lot of money for a house in today’s market. That means they may not be able to easily afford upgrades after they move in. So, if your home is outdated or needs some work, buyers might pass it by or offer a lower price than you were hoping for.
And there are a lot of homes that need upgrades right now. Millions are entering their prime remodel years, meaning they’re between 20 and 39 years old. Maybe yours is one of them. According to John Burns Research and Consulting (JBRC), the number of homes in their prime remodel years is high and growing (see graph below):

If your house falls into this category, it’s important to consider making selective updates to help it appeal to buyers, so it sells faster. But how do you know where to spend your time and money?
Why You Need a Real Estate Agent
By working with a local real estate agent to be strategic about the improvements you make, you can be sure you’re making a smart investment. Put simply, not all upgrades are worth the cost. As Bankrate says:
“Before you spend money on costly upgrades, be sure the changes you make will have a high return on investment. It doesn’t make sense to install new granite countertops, for example, if you only stand to break even on them, or even lose money.”
And, as that same Bankrate article goes on to say, that’s where a local real estate agent comes in:

When a local couple recently bought their Spanish Hills home in Camarillo, they immediately remodeled the inside to suit their family’s style, but their spacious backyard left much to be desired.
So, they contacted Cat in a Hammock in Thousand Oaks to help them transform their outdoor area into a beautiful oasis.

DESIGNING THE DREAM

“We start from nothing, and I ask them, ‘What would you want to be doing in the backyard that you’re currently not doing?’” says Jones, noting the excitement and joy she feels during this phase.
“My favorite part is when I go to my first appointment and we walk through the backyard, envisioning,” says Jones. “I see the potential, the fun they are going to have in their new backyard—this is going to be their favorite room in the house, their outdoor space!”
Acknowledging that “every home is different, and every family’s different,” Jones’ collaborations with clients add incredible beauty, style and function to their homes, increasing their living space and allowing the family to enjoy all the benefits of spending time in the great outdoors in comfort.

Here, Jones shares highlights from the Spanish Hills home’s backyard transformation, noting these are common issues that homeowners often consult Cat in a Hammock about.
Challenge: This home has a pool, but it is outdated, with cracks in the pool coping and steps.
Solution: We modernized the beach entry, tile and coping to make it elegant and timeless.
Challenge: The family likes to entertain guests, and their concrete patio wasn’t large enough to accommodate a big enough table.
Solution: We installed a new paver patio so they could have enough room and a table that seats 8-10 people.
Challenge: There was a lack of gathering spaces outside.
Solution: We built a really cool modern fireplace for the family and friends to gather around.
Challenge: There is not enough shade in the backyard. Shade umbrellas were heavy and had to be moved around, and they would often blow over in the wind.
Solution: We built two shade structures by the pool and in the dining area. The pergola became a focal point of the backyard, giving it a resort feel. Pergolas can extend your living space and be free-standing or attached to a house. Either way, it creates a favorite place to gather and relax.

Challenge: The landscaping needed more color, without adding additional maintenance.
Solution: We continued the tropical theme by adding plants with red, yellow and orange foliage for a pop of color, without added care needed for flowers.
Challenge: The property was quite spacious and very dark at night, so you can’t see and couldn’t spend time outside after dark.
Solution: We put in 90 lights throughout the property, making the outdoors more dramatic and beautiful in the evening. It allows the family to stay out and enjoy the space long after the sunset. The dimmable lights we install are programmed to automatically lower their intensity as the night gets darker and can be controlled via your phone.
Challenge: There were uninteresting focal spaces in the backyard.
Solution: We added two water fountains, one by the entrance to the backyard, where guests gather, and one near the back of the yard. The sound of the water creates a welcoming, tranquil environment you can sit by and enjoy.
Challenge: There were a few pockets of bare landscape by an existing seating area.
Solution: We added a few fruit trees—avocado, lemon and orange trees in the sunny area of the yard,
creating an orchard to sit by and enjoy the harvest. It’s all about designing these little nooks throughout the yard.
Using 3D design software enables Cat in a Hammock to show clients exactly how their outdoor space will look. And now being able to experience the design in virtual reality takes it to a new level.
“Sometimes people don’t know what they want, and the 3D design experience can really help them imagine and see their vision,” says Jones. “It’s wonderful to hear clients tell me, ‘We’re here every day. We love it so much!’ That’s why they call us, to transform their space!”

A local gem in the community, the Santa Rosa Valley Equestrian Park offers 50 acres of natural wide-open space for horseback riding, exploring and hiking. This beautiful park holds a special place in the hearts of many Santa Rosa Valley residents, whose dedicated efforts are responsible for its existence.
“For over 30 years, the residents of Santa Rosa Valley lobbied to develop the Santa Rosa Valley Equestrian Park in Hill Canyon,” shares local resident and realtor Rosemary Allison.
Dedicated members of the Santa Rosa Valley MAC, including Rosemary, Ruth Means and Mark Burley, and Supervisor Linda Parks spent countless hours meeting with the Thousand Oaks City Council members to bring the dream to fruition.
“The last hurdle that the City of Thousand Oaks gave us in 2010 to overcome was to raise the funds to build a bridge that was in the park,” recalls Rosemary, who donated funds along with some fellow residents to finance the building of the bridge.
On April 12, 2011, years of negotiation and work paid off when the City of Thousand Oaks approved the agreement with the County of Ventura and the Santa Rosa Valley MAC to move forward with the construction of the park, says Rosemary.
“The residents came together to put some ‘sweat equity’ into the development. We had a ‘tractor’ party where community members, including Mark Burley, Joe Markiewicz, David Boyle, Kimme Black, showed up with tractors to level out the pad. Other residents, including Master Gardener Tom Wade and his wife Diane became part of our planting party,” says
Rosemary, noting that the Equestrian Park is one of her favorite places in the area to spend time at with friends and family.
“Over the years we have had many community events there, including the ‘No Place Like Hope’ picnic, created by Santa Rosa Valley resident Kimme Black. My fellow Santa Rosa Valley MAC council member Mark Burley and I enjoyed our ‘Ole Fashion Pie Auction,’ which raised funds for the event,” she adds.
And last June, the park welcomed another community-building program called Stepping Stones. In October the Santa Rosa Valley MAC and Stepping Stones will be hosting a fundraiser at the park with an Old Fashion Pie Auction.
“I had the privilege of being part of the ribbon-cutting ceremony with Supervisor Jeff Gorell to welcome the Stepping Stones program to the park whose mission is to connect horses and people regardless of circumstance and wealth with low-cost riding lessons and horse experiences. The joy in their faces validated all of the hard work it took to get to this point,” she notes.

Oaks Christian Launches Two New Institutes
Oaks Christian School celebrates its 25th anniversary this academic year, but the leader in educational innovation is not resting on its laurels. The past 2-plus decades have seen the college-preparatory school excel in academic, artistic and athletic endeavors, as well as opening a domestic and international boarding program, and the future trajectory is not slowing down.
This fall Oaks Christian is opening two new institutes, adding to the three it has already launched: engineering, arts and innovation and global leadership.
As students return to school this fall, the Institute of Health Sciences and the Institute of Bible and Discipleship will be two new options for high school students.
“We are excited these two new institutes will offer unique pathways giving our students a jumpstart on cultivating their passions and interest,” said Associate Head of School Dr. Matt Northrop. “Both of these institutes are oriented toward a mindset of service, be it through vocational ministry or the medical and health science fields.”
As with the other institutes, students will interact with industry professionals, enjoy master classes taught by experts, have internship and shadowing opportunities, and present a senior capstone project.
Headed by OCS Director of Medical Services Dr. Bryan Wong, the Institute of Health Sciences will give students with an interest in health and science-related careers an opportunity to go deeper into an understanding of medicine, anatomy, health and illness.
Pathways include Biotechnology and Research; Health Care; Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition; and Population Health.
Students will learn through hands-on experiences, including suturing, surgical knot tying, first aid, CPR, emergency response, and physical and clinical evaluation. The required curriculum weaves existing science courses along with institute-specific courses that prepare students to enter university with confidence.
However, the institute seeks to instill in students more than just medical, scientific and technological knowledge and competence.
“The institute aims to inspire students to appreciate the human body and all of God’s creation as uniquely made, and to instill a heart of compassion for those in need,” said Dr. Wong.
Continuing with a mindset of growth and innovation, and responsiveness to student needs, the Institute of Bible and Discipleship launched in the spring of 2024 for those students who want to take their faith to the next level.
Headed by Dr. Jim Altizer, the Institute of Bible and Discipleship focuses on Biblical servant-leadership, worship philosophy, the development of a faith and science perspective, and chapel planning.
Students study theology, apologetics and discipleship. They attend a summer leadership camp and enjoy guest speakers and class options beyond the required Bible courses at Oaks Christian. They can interact with institute advisory council members such as Greg Kokul, renowned Christian apologist and president and founder of Reasons to Believe.

Have you ever pieced together an outfit for a special event or placed a collection of items on a shelf and then stood back and found that the pieces you pulled together totally worked or completely did not work? I used to think that I either needed a whole lot of talent or a bit of luck when it came to styling something beautifully. Turns out, there is no talent or luck about it at all. It all starts with a math formula. This formula is known as The Golden Ratio of 1.618. Discovered in the ancient world by mathematicians, this pattern can be found all over in the world of nature. This ratio creates patterns that can be found on the spines of a pinecone, seeds on a sunflower head, spirals on seashells, even the human form, to name only a few. And our eyes love to see it. Why our eyes like this particular pattern may remain a mystery but how to achieve it is no mystery at all. Fashion designers, interior designers, architects, photographers and artists have all been using this formula for centuries in order to achieve visually appealing compositions. And so can you!
LET’S MAKE A VIGNETTE!
In interior styling, a vignette is a small, curated collection of objects grouped together to create a smaller picture within a larger space in a room. Chances are, at some point you’ve put together a vignette without knowing it was one. What makes the difference between a purposefully styled vignette and a cluttered collection is all in the composition. The composition is most appealing when this amazing Golden Ratio is applied.
To get started on styling a vignette, first decide on the space you’ll place it. It could be an empty shelf, bedside table, or coffee table. Next, collect a few of your very favorite things that could be styled there. These objects could be a few books, a vase with flowers, a candle, a small clock, a plant, a few apples, the list is endless. Now that you have your space and objects to style, it’s time to assemble your vignette.
GET IN LINE!
Where To Place Objects
In grid form, the Golden Ratio shows designers exactly where to place the most important objects in the composition for the greatest visual appeal. Known as Phi, this grid splits the space that you’re working with into thirds vertically and horizontally. Place the most important objects on the correlation grid lines. Even better, place on the points where the lines intersect. This will be more appealing to the eye than if the important objects are in the center of the frame or far to the sides.
FOLLOW THE FLOWERS
How
many objects to use
In number form, the Golden Ratio helps us to know how many items to use when styling a vignette. This form is known as the Fibonacci Sequence (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, etc.). The sequence grows as it adds together the prior two numbers to get a new number (for example, 3+5=8 and 5+8=13, etc) and repeats. Amazingly, all the numbers that you achieve by doing this are the exact same numbers of petals that are found on flowers. How amazing is that! To apply to styling a vignette, choose a number in the Fibonacci Sequence for the number of items you will use to style. Typically 3 or 5 objects work great for small vignettes.
STEP DOWN OR TRIANGLE
What
shape to create
The eye loves to see odd numbers. Odd numbers stop our brain from categorizing items into pairs which are less visually interesting. When styling a vignette, build a triangle shape of 3 points with the objects you are styling. To achieve this, vary the heights of objects to make a stepping down effect. If your items are of similar height then use books or a small object to lift one higher so that it appears taller than the others. To start, place the tallest piece in the back, medium piece in front and slightly to the side of the tall piece, then the smallest piece in front to create a stepping down effect. The Golden Triangle has angles of 72 and 36 degrees but any triangle here will do!
