Giving Back is Our Community Tradition
Ten years ago, before we launched Conejo Valley Lifestyle in 2015, we took a long look at the editorial coverage of the local community media landscape, including what was being covered in depth and, most importantly, what was not being consistently covered. In the “not being covered” category, nonprofits and giving back stuck out like a sore thumb. ”Lifestyle” and “living” community magazines often tend to focus primarily on fun, glamour and material well-being. That is all well and good and we have also intended to include some of that content. Having fun and being successful is wonderful. What was missing is what makes our Conejo Valley and Santa Rosa Valley communities really special: the giving back generosity of folks in our community and also families, education, health and wellness and other topics that make up the positive fabric of who we are.
Since November is when we traditionally give thanks as a nation for who we are, it is the perfect time to acknowledge some of those who give back to people in our community who need support, such as health, food or shelter. There are also nonprofit arts organizations who enrich our lives with music, dance and performance art, as well as many education initiatives that need your help, such as schools or special programs within a public school. We are often contacted by nonprofits that we were previously unaware of, and we aim to bring their mission to the attention of the community.
In this issue we feature our Lifestyle Publications National Giving Back Campaign, the Dream Community Center, Senior Concerns, The Boys & Girls Club, the Turkey Day Dash, Ten Things to be Thankful For, and of course, the very generous and giving family headed by Rosemary Allison along with her children, Joe and Cristina Markiewicz. The passion for serving the community that Rosemary brings to the table is remarkable.
As we move forward into 2026, our commitment to organizations and community members who give back will always be there.

ROSEMARY ALLISON: A LIFETIME OF SERVICE, LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNITY IMPACT
For Rosemary Allison, giving back to the community isn’t just something she does— it’s who she is. A longtime Santa Rosa Valley resident and one of Ventura County’s most respected Realtors, Rosemary has spent decades pairing professional excellence with a deep commitment to philanthropy, public service and leadership.
As an elected member of the Santa Rosa Valley Municipal Advisory Council, Rosemary has overseen projects ranging from the creation of a local equestrian and hiking park to the installation of traffic lights that improved neighborhood safety. She also helped establish the Santa Rosa Valley Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), which connects residents with vital updates on fires, mountain lion sightings and local crimes while maintaining supplies to assist during natural disasters.
Her dedication to public safety and civic engagement is matched by her philanthropy. Rosemary serves on the Board of For The Troops, a nonprofit that ships 2,000 “We Care” packages to deployed service members every month. For the past 7 years, she has chaired the organization’s annual gala at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, raising essential funds to cover nearly $30,000 in monthly postage costs. She has also championed fundraising for the American Cancer Society, YMCA and countless local schools and youth sports programs.
This commitment has earned her numerous accolades, including
• Woman of the Year 2024, bestowed by Senator Henry Stern, who praised her “lifelong dedication to bringing people together for the greater good.”
• 2025 marked her Golden Jubilee Year, commemorating 5 decades as one of Ventura County’s most respected and consistently top-performing Realtors.
• First Annual Supervisorial Leadership & Excellence Award (2025), honoring her outstanding leadership and service to Ventura County.
• City of Thousand Oaks Community Service Award (2025), recognizing her lasting impact through real estate, civic service, CERT and nonprofit work.
• Volunteer of the Year, Ventura County (2010 National Philanthropy Day), awarded by the Association of
“Growing up, my parents instilled in me the value of service and reminded me that true success is measured by the impact we leave on others.”
Fundraising Professionals and American Cancer Society after she chaired a gala that raised more than $225,000 for cancer research and programs.
• The Conejo Simi Moorpark Board of Realtors Community Service Award
• Multiple reader-voted honors as Best Realtor, including 8 consecutive years in the Los Angeles Daily News and repeated wins from the Ventura County Star, VC Reporter and Thousand Oaks Acorn .
• National recognition by The Wall Street Journal as one of the Top 250 Realtors in the United States Rosemary’s path to service was shaped early on. “Growing up, my parents instilled in me the value of service and reminded me that true success is measured by the impact we leave on others,” she explains.
Later, in real estate, she saw firsthand how deeply life-changing a move could be for a family—and realized her work could extend far beyond contracts to touch lives in meaningful ways.
Her philosophy is simple yet powerful: "The big secret to my success is that there is no big secret,” Rosemary says. “Whatever your goal, you can get there if you’re willing to work. You get out of life what you have the courage to put into it.”
When she was 21, she was so worried about getting married and “starting” life.
“What I know now is that each and every wrong turn in life can still lead you to where you want to go,” she emphasizes. “The road to success is always under construction. Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
“My philanthropic heart was inspired early in life by my mother, who taught me the importance of generosity, relationships and service.”
For Rosemary, the ultimate goal has never been recognition, but inspiration. She hopes her efforts encourage others to give of themselves, to strengthen the bonds of community and to create a legacy of generosity that endures for generations to come.
Beyond Rosemary’s own story, her devotion to service is mirrored by her family. Her daughter, Cristina, and son, Joe, have each carved their own paths as passionate philanthropists—extending the family legacy of generosity, civic engagement and leadership into a new generation.
United by shared values and a drive to uplift others, Rosemary’s family continues to shape their community, proving that compassion and service are woven deeply into their lives. The following sections shine a light on Cristina and Joe’s unique contributions and the growing impact of Ventura County’s family of philanthropists.
DR. CRISTINA MARKIEWICZ: A LIFE OF SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP
For Dr. Cristina Markiewicz, service is not simply part of her career—it is the foundation of her life. As the owner of Newbury Park Dental Arts, she blends a passion for dentistry with a deep commitment to giving back, creating lasting impact both within the Conejo Valley and beyond.
“Giving back has always been central to my life,” she affirms, a sentiment that defines both her mission and her legacy.
At her practice, Dr. Cristina is dedicated to delivering compassionate, high-quality care while continually investing in advanced technology and ongoing education for her patients and team. Yet her influence extends far beyond the dental chair.
She has served as president of the Conejo Valley Academy of Dentistry, a nonprofit devoted to mentorship, collaboration and continuing education for local dentists. Today, she continues shaping the profession as a member of the California Dental Association’s Board of Managers, helping set the course for patient care and professional standards statewide.
Her community involvement is equally robust. Dr. Cristina has held leadership roles as Event Chair for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, contributed to numerous American Cancer Society galas, and supported initiatives such as the For The Troops gala. She has chaired California Lutheran University’s Community Leaders Association Hats & High Tea and led the Westlake Village Women’s Club, raising funds for organizations including Conejo Free Clinic, Many Mansions, Temple Adat and Cancer Fit. Her generosity bridges diverse causes and communities, strengthening families and local connections.
Her service also spans across borders. On a mission trip to Fiji, she provided essential dental care and education to underserved populations. In San Francisco, she organized outreach efforts for Project Homeless Connect, ensuring those who are most vulnerable had access to critical services.
Recognition has followed her work. Named one of the Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce’s “40 Under Forty” and honored with the prestigious Dugoni Service Award, Dr. Cristina remains grounded in her inspiration: her mother.
“My philanthropic heart was inspired early in life by my mother, who taught me the importance of generosity, relationships and service. Watching her treat clients like family and give back to the community shaped my values,” she reflects.
Mentorship and collaboration remain at the core of her vision for the future.
“True leadership means lifting others up—patients, colleagues and future generations of dentists alike,” she says. Her goal is to create a ripple effect of support, education and care, fostering communities where people feel valued, supported and inspired.
Ultimately, she believes that success is meant to be shared. Whether through her dental practice, nonprofit leadership or community outreach, Dr. Cristina approaches every role with unwavering commitment.
“Dentistry is more than a profession to me—it’s a calling and a way to make a difference every single day.”
JOE MARKIEWICZ: PHILANTHROPIC
LEADER STRENGTHENING CONEJO VALLEY
Joe Markiewicz, a real estate agent based in Santa Rosa Valley, stands out as one of Conejo Valley’s most dedicated community leaders, blending hands-on involvement with heartfelt inspiration from family.
“I serve as a board member on the Ventura County Sheriff’s Foundation and act as the Firewise contact for my neighborhood. Over the years, I’ve been actively involved in community cleanup efforts, safety initiatives and supporting programs that strengthen the bond between law enforcement and our residents,” says Joe, whose reputation as a generous neighbor is grounded in visible results and ongoing commitment.
Joe’s presence is felt across countless local initiatives, whether championing brush clearance campaigns for fire safety or serving as the neighborhood Firewise captain.
“I’ve been recognized for my community cleanup work and was honored as part of the 40 Under Forty awards, highlighting leadership and impact in the local community,” he shares, reflecting on accolades from the Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce and the County of Ventura. Joe is also a driving force behind major events like Coppers and Choppers and the Shop with a Cop Children’s charity, always seeking ways to enrich the environment for families and first responders.
For Joe, the heart of Conejo Valley lies in its “sense of community, the beautiful open spaces and trails, and the farmland that gives our area such a unique character. It’s a place where neighbors know one another, families thrive and nature is always close by.”
The married father of two daughters credits his passion for service to his family roots.
“My inspiration comes directly from my mom. Growing up, I saw her give so much of herself to others, and it left a lasting impression on me. Giving back became part of our family fabric. My sister Cristina also shares that same heart for service, and together we’ve continued the tradition of contributing wherever we can.”
Joe’s philanthropic goal is simple but profound.
“My ultimate goal is to create a positive impact that strengthens and sustains the community—whether through safety, service or simply showing up for one another. I want to help ensure that Ventura County remains a place where families feel supported, connected and proud to call home.”
Whether organizing safety campaigns, fostering neighborly connections or volunteering at charity events, Joe says, “beyond my professional and philanthropic commitments, I find joy in fostering connections—whether it’s through community events, local organizations or just being there to lend a hand. At the end of the day, it’s about leaving things better than how I found them and setting an example for the next generation.”
DREAM Community Center
EMPOWERING TEENS AND ADULTS OF ALL ABILITIES
ARTICLE BY ALICIA DOYLE
With a mission to empower teens and adults of all abilities by offering a nurturing environment, the Dream Community Center in Westlake Village is an inclusive recreation community center for adults and teens with disabilities.
“One of the important areas of focus for our center is serving adults on the spectrum. This is a huge need and we are eager to fill the gap for Conejo Valley families,” says Edlyn Peña, of Camarillo, who’s a mom to an autistic 17-year-old son, Diego.
The majority of services in California are geared toward youth, she noted. “But, as we know and expect, those youth will grow up to become adults.”
With more and more children being diagnosed with autism at a rate of 1 in 31 children, “our communities need more resources for autistic adults,” says Peña, adding that services for this population are especially important for those who require high support needs and may not be independent enough to hold their own job or career. “We cater to this population by giving them enriching programs and classes throughout the day.”
The center–founded by Peña and her business partner, Henry Panah–opened in June with a 7-week summer camp that served 26 campers who participated in age-appropriate activities and games.
“A few weeks ago we transitioned into offering a daytime program that offers classes ranging from brain games, to STEM lessons, to self-regulation and self-advocacy life skills,” Peña says. “We started off with four participants and hope to enroll more in the future.”
In the afternoons, the center offers social recreation classes, including music, art, yoga, ceramics, fitness and brain and motor games. Classes are vendored with Tri-Counties Regional Center.
CONTINUED >
“Oftentimes, minimally speaking and nonspeaking teens and adults attend programs and services where the staff may not be trained in supporting different modes of communication,” says Peña, further noting that the staff is trained in providing access to augmentative and alternative communication to minimally speaking and nonspeaking autistic teens and adults.
“This may include communication tools and devices like laminated letter boards, choice boards, keyboards and tablets with communication apps,” she explains. “It is unusual to find programs that are equipped to include participants who have different communication needs. This is important for their inclusion, participation and interactions with peers and instructors/staff.”
The Dream Community Center was inspired by Peña’s son, Diego, who will graduate from high school this June. He is nonspeaking and uses a letter board to communicate, and often requires one-on-one support to participate in activities and interact with others.
“I was terrified thinking about the lack of services and supports for people like him,” Peña recalls. “I knew I would have to coordinate his participation in a variety of college classes and community activities once he graduated, but there didn't seem to be a lot of options in our community.”
At the Dream Community Center, “Diego and his peers have more options for enrichment, age-appropriate programs and supportive staff who know how to incorporate a person who communicates differently.”
In addition to her role as CEO of the Dream Community Center, Peña is a professor and scholar who researches approaches to support the inclusion of minimally speaking autistic students in community and educational settings. She has published more than two dozen research articles, books and reports in the area of disability.
“In particular, my research focuses on exploring ways to assist neurodiverse students to access and transition into college environments, and supporting minimally speaking autistic students to access and use augmentative and alternative ways to communicate.”
The Dream Community Center “fills an important gap” in community services by providing people from Conejo Valley and beyond with fulfilling life options.
“Families from Ventura to Culver City drive all the way into Westlake Village to experience engaging, educational and fun programming,” Peña says. “We are honored to be able to create a meaningful space that is rooted in love and respect for the growing autistic community.”
Above all, she believes “all humans want relationships and purpose. Our vision is to build a community for adults and teens to have friends and a life filled with purpose.”
The Dream Community Center is located at 870 Hampshire Road, Suite X, in Westlake Village. For more information, visit DreamCommunityCenter.org
Top 10 Reasons to Be Thankful
ARTICLE BY BARTON GOLDSMITH
“Being with someone who makes you laugh every day is healing, enriching and downright fun.”
During this holiday, take some time to reflect on what's most important and express your gratitude to those you love. We're only here for a very short time and being thankful will help you value it.
1. Life. Life is a gift and life with love is heaven on Earth. To be able to share whatever you have with those closest to you is one of the best feelings any human being could ever experience.
2. Laughter. Being with someone who makes you laugh every day is healing, enriching and just downright fun. It is also one of the signs of a healthy relationship.
3. Trust. To be at peace, couples have to trust one another. Knowing that your partner is there for you and will remain faithful on all levels takes a lot of the stress of daily living away.
4. Tears. To be able to cry on your loved one's shoulder if you need to is one of the treasures in a good relationship. For a man, to be able to let his guard down and release the pain is nurturing and emotionally healthy. For a woman, having someone who will listen and hold her is a way she will feel safe and secure.
5. Sharing. Dealing with the ups and downs of life and love as a couple will bond you and make things easier. Life is sweeter when you share it, so don't hold back.
6. Serenity. The feeling of peace that a couple has when they know who they are and where they are going
is one of the best sensations you can have. Tranquility is one of the most underrated things in life.
7. Happiness. Feeling like Snoopy at suppertime or grinning from ear to ear because you know you're loved by the right person is a rare and beautiful gift.
8. Health. If you've ever dealt with a serious or chronic illness you know how important your health is. Being with someone who will care for you if you ever have a physical crisis gives you a powerful sense of well-being.
9. Faith. Knowing that there is a higher power you can turn to when things become too difficult for you to deal with on your own is a blessing. We all have our doubts about this from time to time and most seem to return to the idea that something much more powerful than we are has had a hand in making this all happen.
10. Friendship. Being with your best friend is one of the most romantic things I can think of. As the years pass, having someone you can talk to is far more important than money or looks. Friendship in a relationship is a winning combination.
I love Thanksgiving; it's a time when I get to remind myself of the many things I am grateful for, and all of you who read my column are a big part of that. Thank you!

MONEY Matters:
ARTICLE BY LAURA MARIE RAULINAITIS
Financial planning is not just about numbers—it’s about people and priorities. Families, business owners and individuals all face decisions that shape their futures: saving for retirement, caring for loved ones or creating a legacy. Without a clear plan, those decisions can feel overwhelming. With preparation, they provide clarity and confidence.
THE POWER OF COLLABORATION
Financial lives are complex. Investments intersect with taxes, estate planning, insurance and family dynamics. That’s why collaboration matters. When CPAs, attorneys and advisors work together, clients feel supported and better equipped to make lasting decisions.
BALANCE OVER CERTAINTY
Markets, tax laws and personal circumstances constantly evolve. The best financial plans are flexible, balancing growth potential with risk awareness. While no strategy guarantees certainty, a well-prepared plan can provide resilience in the face of change.
EVERY PLAN TELLS A STORY
Behind every financial strategy is a personal story: parents saving for education, couples preparing
“Financial planning doesn’t have to be a solo responsibility. The most successful outcomes happen with trusted relationships who listen, run through scenarios and challenge assumptions. Advisory relationships also create accountability.”
for retirement or entrepreneurs building for the next generation. Numbers alone can’t capture what matters most—values, priorities and emotions are just as important.
AVOIDING THE TRAP OF BEING TOO CONSERVATIVE
While careful stewardship is essential, being overly conservative can carry risks of its own. This is especially relevant for women. On average, women earn less than men over the course of their careers, live longer and often take on caregiving responsibilities that interrupt earning years. Added together, these realities mean women may face greater financial headwinds.
To compound the challenge, studies show women tend to be more conservative investors than men. While caution can protect against volatility, it can also limit growth potential. The result: Women not only make less money during their lifetimes, but often make less on their money as well.
That’s why setting clear goals and maintaining accountability are so important. A strong financial plan doesn’t just help protect against downside risks— it gives your money the chance to grow in alignment with your future needs.
THE VALUE OF RELATIONSHIPS
Financial planning doesn’t have to be a solo responsibility. The most successful outcomes happen with trusted relationships who listen, run through scenarios and challenge assumptions. Advisory relationships also create accountability—ensuring goals remain clear, plans stay on track and strategies adapt to life’s changes.
A STEWARDSHIP MINDSET
Wealth is more than a measure of success. Managed thoughtfully, it becomes a tool for opportunity, stability and legacy. Transparency, responsibility and respect for the trust clients place in advisors form the foundation of effective stewardship.
THE TAKEAWAY
Life’s most important financial decisions rarely come with perfect timing. But with a thoughtful plan, families and individuals can move forward with greater confidence.

TURKEY DAY DASH
COMMUNITY GATHERS FOR FUN RUN/WALK
ARTICLE BY TRACY MARCYNZSYN
This Thanksgiving, join community members, friends and visitors of all ages for the annual Turkey Day Dash. Hosted by Five07 Coffee along with volunteers from area nonprofits, the 2025 event starts at 7 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 27, at Cal Lutheran University’s Memorial Field in Thousand Oaks, 60 W. Olsen Road.
Some 2,500 participants are expected to register for the event, which features a timed 5K road race and the Zack Zernik Mile (run/walk).
“It’s amazing!” says Race Organizer Kyle Jorrey, noting that Thanksgiving is the “biggest running day of the year.”
“The event has an incredible energy; people love it.”
The family friendly tradition attracts an array of participants who sign up year after year to start the day off with some exercise before heading home to their Thanksgiving feasts.
“Between the mile and 5K, it takes about an hour and a half, so you can be home by 10 a.m. and still have plenty of time to cook dinner and enjoy the Thanksgiving festivities,” notes Jorrey, adding that all ages and skill levels are welcome.
“We have serious runners who are there to compete as well as parents with strollers,” says Jorrey. “This is really a family event, so we don’t want anyone to feel intimidated. Walkers are welcome.”
Participants who register ($50/person or $40/person for a family of three or more) receive a T-shirt and gift bag. Medals and prizes are awarded to the three fastest males and females in each age group.
Those who sign up can participate in the Zack Zernik Mile (8 a.m.) or the Dash 5K (8:30 a.m.), or both. The mile event is named in honor of a Conejo Valley native and lifelong “Dasher” who lost his life in January 2023 at the age of 22. Zachary “Zack” Zernik, a graduate of Thousand Oaks High School, was climbing near Mount Boney outside Newbury Park when he lost his footing and fell.
Zack and his family―including mom Elizabeth, father Fred and sister Marina―took part in the Thanksgiving Day tradition for many years. Zack was an Eagle Scout who loved sports, fitness and the great outdoors.
“We have serious runners who are there to compete as well as parents with strollers.”

The event also features a costume contest and fundraising teams competing for gift cards and prizes.
All proceeds from the Dash benefit three local nonprofits: Hospice of the Conejo, Kiwanis Club of Thousand Oaks Foundation and Scouting America Ventura County. All three provide volunteers who make the event possible.

Wrap Up the Year With Financial Finesse
ARTICLE BY ALBERT CHU
Montecito Bank & Trust’s Vice-President/ Senior Portfolio Manager Albert Chu shares tips about smart year-end financial planning.
Q: WHY IS YEAR-END FINANCIAL PLANNING IMPORTANT?
A: While it’s always a good idea to periodically review your finances, and progress towards your goals, there are certain things that do have year-end deadlines. If you’re a participant in your employer’s 401k plan, you’ll want to review and maximize your contributions or employer match for 2025. From a tax perspective, you’ll want to look at harvesting losses that may offset any capital gains and other situations like a RMD (Required Minimum Distribution) from your retirement accounts. The holiday season is also a great time to think about others so review any charitable donations and any gifts you’ll want to give to individuals to maximize your annual exclusions. There are also mundane things that you’ll want to review to not leave any money on the table. For example, if you have a Health FSA (Flexible Spending Account), you’ll want to ensure you use all funds that can’t be carried over into 2026.
Q: WHAT ARE THE MAIN CONSIDERATIONS WHEN UNDERTAKING YEAR-END FINANCIAL PLANNING?
A: As mentioned, there are items in your financial plan that need to be addressed each calendar year. In addition to these items, you’ll need to consider updating your financial plan for upcoming life events. These can be life events like having a child, starting a new venture or purchasing a second home closer to grandchildren that impact your finances. You also want to take some time and review your progress towards your current goals.
Q: WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU OFFER FOR THOSE WHO MAY BE HAVING TROUBLE GETTING STARTED?
A: You don’t need to do everything in one day; dividing your checklist into manageable pieces will help you from feeling overwhelmed.
Q: DO YOU RECOMMEND MEETING IN PERSON OR IS A PHONE CONVERSATION SUFFICIENT?
A: An initial phone conversation is great way to learn more about an individual’s situation. This will allow your financial advisor to research and prepare strategies that are customized to your needs. An in-person or Zoom meeting is important after to share ideas and recalibrate the strategy if necessary.
Q: WHAT IS THE ANTICIPATED OUTCOME OF ASSESSING FINANCES AT THE END OF THE YEAR?
A: With a year-end review you hope to optimize your tax strategy for the current year and set yourself up for the upcoming year. Reviewing your budget and expenses should provide some insight
on opportunities to increase savings or reallocate resources. It also provides a set timeframe to check your progress on your longterm goals and adjust course if necessary for the coming year.
Q: WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO PERFORM THIS REVIEW—BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS OR IN NOVEMBER/DECEMBER?
A: The best time to perform the review is sooner vs. later. The holidays can be a time filled with events, and it can be difficult to carve out time. Also, as you get closer to year-end, you may find more people rushing to get their financial check list complete as well.
Q: ANY OTHER GENERAL ADVICE FOR READERS REGARDING YEAR-END FINANCIAL PLANNING?
A: With the new Tax Bill, you’re more likely this year to itemize deductions instead of taking the standard deduction, making it more important to keep good records of deductible items.
Q: WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT ASSISTING CLIENTS WITH THIS TASK?
A: I enjoy working with clients and demystifying the financial planning process. It’s rewarding knowing that you can play a part in someone’s financial journey and seeing them reach personal milestones like retirement.
Q: WHAT IS CHALLENGING?
A: The biggest challenge is balancing the need to have a structured financial plan while building in the flexibility to adjust as life changes/surprises arise.

Method of Beauty Merges Beauty & Science
Method of Beauty is redefining the intersection of health, beauty and longevity in Westlake Village—an evolution that traces back to a powerful founding vision. Method of Beauty’s journey began with Michele Chahine, PA-C, who originally founded the brand in 2020. Michele’s vision was to create a space that seamlessly blended concierge-level aesthetics with a deeply personalized approach to beauty and wellness.
As the practice grew, Michele decided to partner up with her husband, Dr. David Chahine, to fulfill a growing need: a truly holistic and medically-guided dimension of patient care. Together, they transformed Method of Beauty into what it is today: a sanctuary where advanced aesthetics meet the precision of medical expertise. This evolution allowed them to offer not just regenerative therapies and natural aesthetics, but a full spectrum of concierge medicine that places patient wellness at its core.
The practice—now the dream of this husband-and-wife duo—blends concierge medicine, regenerative therapies, natural aesthetics and curated skin and wellness treatments, offering not just services but a philosophy: investing in appearance as a path toward vitality, confidence and lasting wellness.
ARTICLE BY ALICIA DOYLE
Every element, from the nurturing atmosphere to the advanced techniques, is orchestrated to deliver an exclusive, transformative experience.
“Ultimately, our mission is to inspire confidence and empower our patients to live beautifully at every stage of life,” explains Dr. David, a Board-Certified Medical Doctor. “At Method of Beauty, we don’t just provide treatments—we create an experience that is as luxurious as it is life-changing.”
What truly sets Method of Beauty apart is the full spectrum of services delivered with both medical precision and the artistry of aesthetics. Every treatment is monitored by a board-certified physician to ensure safety and clinical excellence, while the approach remains deeply personal, attuned to the goals and well-being of each client.
“We bring the precision and accountability of medicine into the world of beauty, while creating a warm, welcoming environment where patients feel heard and supported,” Dr. David notes. “Our philosophy is simple: Beauty and wellness go hand in hand, and when cared for together, they help people feel confident inside and out.”
Homecoming
At the heart of this philosophy is Michele. Raised in Agoura Hills, she has always felt a meaningful bond with the area, a driving force in making Westlake Village the home for their business.
“Moving here allowed us to be closer to her family, and once we settled in, we realized we were living in what felt like heaven,” Dr. David recalls. “Westlake has been such a beautiful, welcoming community, and we truly felt called to serve the people here.”
For Michele, Method of Beauty is the realization of a dream that began when she and Dr. David first met. “We’ve always said MDPATEAM, and seeing it come to life like this means a lot,” she shares.
With nearly a decade and a half of hands-on experience, Michele stands out as a nationally recognized master injector and aesthetic leader. She has trained with respected experts across the country and now mentors other providers nationwide. Her expertise shapes every aspect of the practice, yielding results “performed with precision, artistry and a deep respect for the patient’s natural beauty,” says Dr. David.
The results speak for themselves—since opening its doors just a year ago, Method of Beauty has quickly become an integral part of the area, earning trust through personalized care and impact. The practice offers concierge medicine, physician-guided weight loss, advanced skin therapies, regenerative medicine and medical-grade aesthetics, with their licensed esthetician providing facials and treatments that balance science and luxury.
“From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed and supported,” Dr. David says. “The people here have such a strong sense of connection and care for one another, and that has made our work deeply fulfilling. Westlake has truly embraced us, and we are honored to give back to a community that already feels like family.”

Socializing Your Dog Through Group Obedience
ARTICLE BY BAILEE GATES
Group obedience is a perfect and practical way to socialize your dog. While there are many ways to socialize your dog and expose them to different environments with new sights, sounds and smells, group classes are extremely efficient. When training in a group class, the handler can socialize the dog, build their confidence, learn new skills and relieve anxiety as the energy dissipates in a structured and safe manner. Group classes offer highvalue exposure to ample amounts of distractions, ranging from adults and children, to dogs, toys, food, unfamiliar environments, and new sounds and smells. These distractions work on the dog’s impulse control so the dog and handler can learn together how to work through the many distractors and associations with a variation of structured obedience exercises. This training makes getting out and having real-life experiences much easier, as your dog will be prepared, controlled, desensitized and well-socialized.
In group obedience classes the dog and handler will learn proper handling of a dog in high distraction environments. This includes, but is not limited to, all obedience commands such as sit , down , heel and place on and off leash; these skills are always being elevated in a multitude of ways to improve on aspects including duration, distance, form, focus and distractions. For example, your dog may know how to stay in the down position, but what happens if you leave their side? Can you move farther from them? Can you go out of their sight? Can they handle the down position with heavy distractions? Can they stay in a sit instead of a down? What if there are dogs and people surrounding them? In a group class, you can work on all of these things to elevate and improve their skills, making them completely ready for real-world distractions that you and your dog may face.
Group obedience classes also include a multitude of different dog breeds. It is beneficial to work on socialization and exposure to various temperaments and to minimize reactivity, as each breed has unique characteristics that you want your dog to be ready for (such as high or low energy), as well as different ages, sizes and personalities that it is important to expose your dogs to so they are prepared when they encounter them in the real world.
Beyond Obedience
Tricks and obstacles are some of the more fun and exciting parts of group classes. Obstacles are great exercise for each dog and are fundamental to building confidence. In an obedient and structured manner, dogs learn to go through tunnels, walk over ramps (experiencing different textures builds confidence in walking over new grounds), jump over walls and much more. Obstacles are a great way to create engagement between you and your dog to improve your relationship. You can improve focus and the bond with your dog by learning how to get through an obstacle course.
Attending group obedience regularly is the perfect way to set you and your dog’s day up for success from the start. Not only is it fun for you and your dog, but it gives them (and the handler!) a job to work at. You’ll start them off with the focused mental stimulation and physical exercise they need, all while being in a comfortable and safe environment. It is an asset for physical and mental well-being for your pet. You will get to problem-solve and ask questions as needed. Group class is also a cost-effective and fun way to meet people and obtain community support from other handlers and owners that may have a dog in the same situation or learning the same things as you.
Gold Coast K9 offers a variety of group classes; learn more at GoldCoastK9.com or call 805.647.1799.

Oaks Christian School Expands to Grades TK-12
Its recent expansion to include transitional K-third grade makes Oaks Christian School a full-service TK-12 college-preparatory school.
"Two-and-a-half years ago, I shared with our community the exciting news that the OCS Board of Trustees had unanimously approved expanding the Oaks Christian mission to include the youngest students of this generation, and those that follow," says Head of School Rob Black. "We are now looking forward to fulfilling that promise, where your youngest Lions will thrive academically, emotionally, physically and spiritually."
Oaks Christian is currently accepting applications for its newest grade levels— extending the school’s exceptional academic and character-building programs to its youngest learners.
To accommodate this growth, Oaks Christian has entered into a lease agreement
with the Conejo Valley Unified School District for the property at 975 Evenstar Avenue (formerly Carden Conejo School). The new OCS Evenstar campus, located in Westlake Village, will open in August 2026, exclusively serving students in TK-3.
The TK and Kindergarten levels will offer a full-day program, with complimentary before-school care beginning at 7 a.m. and optional after-school care available until 6 p.m. for an additional fee.
Prospective families are invited to learn more at the Fall Open House on Nov. 2 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the main campus (31749 La Tienda, Westlake Village). A special Elementary Zone session for TK–3 parents will be offered during the event.
To learn more, visit OaksChristian.org / academics/tk-3 and register for the Open House at https://tinyurl.com/39pz7ad5.
H O P E
with YOU
The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?
The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.
Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.
“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”
Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:
SCAN TO NOMINATE
“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”
Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:
“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”
Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.
This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.
“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”
Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.
This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.
To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.

THE POWER OF Being Thankful
ARTICLE BY KIM PAGANO
I can't believe this year went by so quickly! As we move through the seasons, it’s easy to get caught up in our busy schedules. I did—deadlines, commitments, errands and the constant pull of technology. But no matter how full life gets, one practice has the power to ground us, bring us peace and shift our perspective: being thankful.
Gratitude changes how we see the world. When we take time to acknowledge the blessings around us, big or small, we begin to focus less on what’s missing and more on what we have and can appreciate. Even in challenging times, there are moments of beauty, kindness and growth waiting to be noticed.
I am so thankful for my community. The people we surround ourselves with—family, friends, neighbors and fellow business owners—shape our lives in countless ways. It’s the smile from a stranger, the neighbor who checks in on you, the friend who listens without judgment or the colleague who encourages your next step forward. These connections remind us that we’re never truly alone.
Being thankful isn’t just a passing feeling; it’s a habit worth cultivating. It’s writing that handwritten note, expressing appreciation in person or sending a quick text that says, “I was thinking about you today.” It’s pausing at the end of the day to reflect on one thing that went right,
even if the rest felt messy. And here’s the beautiful part— gratitude is contagious. When we share it, it spreads, inspiring others to notice the good in their own lives.
I believe thankfulness is like planting seeds. The more you practice it, the more it grows—and soon, it becomes second nature. It can turn an ordinary day into something extraordinary and help you weather life’s storms, because we all have them.
Here are a few ideas for cultivating gratitude:
1. Start a Gratitude Journal - Write down three things you’re thankful for each day.
2. Express It Out Loud - Tell someone what they mean to you, face-to-face or in a message.
3. Pause & Notice - Look for beauty in everyday moments, like a smile, a sunset or a kind word, and count your blessings.
There's always something to be grateful for….
Here’s my challenge to you: Each day, find one thing you’re thankful for and share it with someone. Let gratitude guide your days, and watch how it transforms not just your outlook, but the world around you.
With gratitude,
Kim Pagano
