How many middle-aged and somewhat older men do we all know who settle in to big middles, collapsed chests, flabby skinny arms, weak and inflexible legs and backs, and worse of all, terrible cardio stamina? The trend to having this happen is often a natural part of aging. The aging is made worse if a man simply becomes a “couch potato.” It may also happen if a moderate or severe illness occurs and brings with it a feeling that most of the air has been taken out of your balloon.
I know all about it. “Been there, done that.” Before I came down with a serious illness (I am a 3 year and counting cancer survivor), Robin always called me the Energizer Bunny. I was nonstop—someone who behaved as if I was 25 years younger than my real age. That all changed at the end of 2019. The illness deflated me. I had very little if any vitality, energy or strength. In my case it was caused by an illness. Most of the time middle- and senioraged men just get out of shape and lazy.
I chose to not surrender. Neither should you! There are a multitude of medically legitimate anti-aging protocols available for men over 50. Some may be covered by insurance. Some may be “out of pocket.” It usually takes a combination of proper nutrition, nutritional supplements and advice from medical and exercise professionals. It means taking charge and reclaiming your life. Your 50s, 60s, 70s and even your 80s do not need to be a depressing decline into traditional old age. Check out the Novus AntiAging Center article on page 42.
My final thoughts are not even about a man. They are about a very iconic woman, Joni Mitchell. Since I am a music and arts lover, she has always been one of my heroes. Robin and I watched her receive the Library of Congress George & Ira Gershwin Award for Popular Music. She had previously suffered a brain aneurysm and had been in a coma. She has not only recovered in good part, but she was on stage closing out the ceremony and concert with an incredible rendition of Gershwin’s “Summertime.”
Do not give in. Live your life to the fullest!

If you’re thinking about selling this spring, it’s time to get moving – the best week to list your house is fast approaching. Experts at realtor.com looked at seasonal trends from recent years (excluding 2020 as an uncharacteristic year due to the onset of the pandemic) and determined the ideal week to list a house this year:
“Home sellers on the fence waiting for that perfect moment to sell should start preparations, because the best time to list a home in 2023 is approaching quickly”
If you’ve been waiting for the best time to sell, this is your chance. But remember, before you put your house on the market, you’ve got to get it ready. And if you haven’t started that process yet, you’ll need to move quickly. Here’s what you should keep in mind.
Start by prioritizing which updates you’ll make. In February, realtor.com asked more than 1,200 recent or potential home sellers what updates they ended up making to their house before listing it (see graph below):
As you can see, the most common answers included landscaping and painting. Work with a trusted real estate agent to determine what projects make the most sense for your goals and local market.
Once you’ve made any necessary repairs and updates to your house, consider having it staged. According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), 82% of buyers’ agents said staging a home made it easier for a buyer to visualize the property as a future home. Additionally, almost half of buyers’ agents said home staging had an effect on most buyers’ view of the home in general. Homes that are staged typically sell faster and for a higher price because they help potential buyers more easily picture their new life in the house. One of the advantages of listing your home with me, is that my staging team helps you with the staging of your home. We have added furniture pieces, artwork and floral arrangements to help make your home realize the highest sales price.
Are you ready to sell this spring? Let’s connect to plan your next steps. You can start by making a checklist of what you think your house needs to get ready. Then, we can work together to prioritize your list and move forward together.

For the past 3 decades the Seattlebased lifestyle brand has consistently proven the secret of its longevity: celebrating a joie de vivre philosophy embracing effortless style that can be found in sportswear, swimwear and accessories for men and women. In 1993 Tommy Bahama launched as an upscale menswear collection that invoked an island state of mind that has been the stepping stone to its journey as a true lifestyle brand. Today, the brand continues to evolve its dual gender omni channel presence in over 160 retail stores, e-commerce, wholesale, restaurants, bars and licensing.
Defined by high quality fabrics, with the softest hand feel, expert craftsmanship and attention to detail, Tommy Bahama men’s is synonymous with timeless style. Throughout the 30-year history, innovation has been a brand hallmark seen through the advancement of silhouettes, fabrics and technical features. The evolution of this innovation is IslandZone®, a collection featuring unique

These one-of-a-kind pieces of art are turned into prints for sportswear and swimwear collections, accessories, home collections and more. In celebration of its 30th anniversary, Tommy Bahama has created a capsule of custom-designed tropical prints and patterns and panel back artwork as well as the Patchwork in Paradise Silk Camp Shirt , designed using iconic prints from Tommy Bahama’s 30 years—a special patchwork of favorite Tommy Bahama prints from throughout their history.
A further nod to the brand's heritage is the Artist Series—featuring artwork from renowned artists from around the world. The Perfect Paradise Camp Shirt features a Tommy Bahama signature scenic tropical print by renowned Italian textile artist Bepe Spadaccini on a classic silk camp shirt silhouette, while the Bahama Coast Aloha from Hawaii IslandZone® Camp Shirt features a graphic Hawaiian-island scenic on a micro-perforated fabric for extra breathability—both unique additions to the collection. Available at select Tommy Bahama stores throughout Southern California and at TommyBahama.com.
You have to hand it to Ferrari—they were bold enough on the Roma coupe a couple years back to break a lot of Ferrari must-haves, as it was not festooned with all the usual race-like accoutrements, such as hood scoops, side vents, spoilers on stilts and other "boy racer" stuff that would be almost embarrassing on a car meant 100% for the street.
ARTICLE BY WALLACE WYS PHOTOGRAPHY BY FERRARI & WALLACE WYSThe car is almost Jaguar-like but sleeker than Jaguar's F-type sports car and more akin to the original '60s XKE roadster. It would be too much to hope for to fit a V12 to make a Spyder recalling the 365GTS Daytona Spyder, but the 3.9-liter V8 rated at 612 HP (with 561 lb-ft of torque) is no slouch. It gets the car up into the 200 mph (320 km/h) territory that you expect from a Ferrari.
As in the coupe, an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic is the only transmission—and it is nothing short of amazing! This lean Spyder is a four-seater, although I haven't seen it pictured with rear passengers. I expect "child seats" might be an accurate description of the rear seats.
The new roadster breaks new (or should we say "old") ground by bringing back the soft top after it looked like open-air sports car enthusiasts were going to have to accept the metal and plastic retractable hardtop as the successor to the soft top. There is something charming and wonderfully "old school" about a canvas top, especially in the contrast it presents between the matte surface of the cloth and the glistening paint of the body.
One thing they stuck to on the Spyder is the chromeless "colander"-type grille unusual even among Italian cars.
HERE'S MY TAKE ON THE DESIGN:
• FRONT: Glad they are sticking with the chromeless "colander" grille, as it gives them an outbound path from the almost 7-plus decades of shiny bright "egg crate" grilles.
• SIDE: From the side profile, the rear fenders swing up to minimize the view of the top when retracted. But the black-colored headrest fairings behind the seats are bulky and you wonder if they could have dropped them for an altogether cleaner look à la early Jaguar E-type roadster? On the lower rear from the side view, the flat black trim detracts from enjoying the "purity" of the side view (so do the rocker panels,
but not as much). Couldn't the wrap-around part of the lower rear body panel be body colored on the side or the whole appendage reduced in size to show a cleaner body shape?
• REAR: Here's where it takes an odd turn, almost Porsche 911-like since the Porsche 911 is also available with a cloth top. The black portion on the rear deck recalls the grille of the old air-cooled 911 roadsters. No doubt an option will be painting the movable spoiler in the body color. After all, the Porsche 911 Cabriolet is a mere under-$150,000 car. Why have your $280,000 Ferrari look like a much cheaper car? The large exhaust pipes are a disappointing throwback to the "boy racer" era, whereas the rest of the car has left behind those old cliches. I think the exhausts could have been integrated in a much subtler manner. After all, this is a Ferrari showing much of the old “boy racer” design cues can be left behind for a more gentlemanly alternative.
In sum, Ferrari is wise to offer a variation on the coupe because it gives a "way out" from their heavier looking front-engine cars like the Portofino that they already offer—a new direction so to speak, one aimed at a wider audience in the luxury car world (dare I say a "more sophisticated" audience?). I even think it appeals to a different market—those who have always wanted a Ferrari for the driving pleasure and engineering and an opportunity to personally enjoy part of their storied history but have steered clear so far because they don't want to convey that "boy racer, look at me" impression, as is conveyed by some of their other models. It is, in two words, wonderfully discreet.

Oaks Christian School celebrated “All Night Long” as the community welcomed Grammy-winning artist and Hall of Famer Lionel Richie and celebrity television host Jay Leno to headline and emcee, respectively, its annual Dinner Auction Gala, which smashed all previous gala records. Held this year at the iconic Beverly Wilshire Hotel, the historic event on April 1 surpassed all previous galas, raising over $1.4 million to support the
scho ol’s students and mission. The total proceeds came from sponsorships, online, silent, and live auctions and the Moment to Give pledges.
The jaw-dropping moment of the evening was the live auctioning of the Goldendoodle puppy that went for a final bid of $100,000 after a fierce bidding war—causing even
veteran auctioneer Jim Nye to comment he had never seen such a high ending bid for a puppy in his 30 years of professional auctioneering.
While the puppy was the highest single item in the fast-paced live auction, six tours of Jay Leno’s Garage, which the famous comedian auctioned off himself, went for $20,000 each for a total of $120,000. The Taylor Swift concert at SoFi Stadium brought in an impressive final bid of $55,000.
to make it more interesting. Of course, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.”
Contemporary, impressionistic landscape painter Russell Hunziker shares his love of the outdoors with others through his unique paintings.
“I try to use unconventional or more contemporary designs to make the ordinary landscapes more intriguing for the viewer and ask the viewer to think about the design and spend time understanding what’s going on,” says Russell, a Pacific Palisades resident. “I also try to involve problem solving in my paintings, like how to use a particular design scheme or color scheme into an ordinary subject
As a member of Allied Artists, Russell participates in free monthly paint-outs in nature on the second Saturday of each month and enjoys the sense of camaraderie created by spending time painting outdoors with others, hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains and supporting the nonprofit’s mission to paint and protect the Santa Monica Mountains.
Allied Artists members donate a portion of the proceeds from sales of their original works to the Western National Park Association, National Park Service, National Wildlife Fund and Save LA Cougars, among other organizations, such as those supported by Russell: SCAPE (Southern California Artists Protecting the Environment), Westlake Village Art Group and the Tehachapi Art Association. We caught up with Russell to learn more about his work.
“Rather than trying to paint an exact copy of the scene, I strive to incorporate my vision and imagination into the painting, so it is uniquely mine, not a verbatim photocopy.”
Q. WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO PAINT?
A . “I am inspired by nature and my compositions echo the beauty of the natural world. Rather than trying to paint an exact copy of the scene, I strive to incorporate my vision and imagination into the painting, so it is uniquely mine, not a verbatim photocopy. I build upon the historical tradition of California impressionists and by the design and color theories of contemporary artists David Gallup, Eric Merrell, Daniel Pinkham, George Carlson, Ron Kingswood and Len Chmiel.”
Q. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PAINTING THAT YOU HAVE CREATED?
A. “It's hard to pick a favorite painting—it’s like picking a favorite child. Currently I’m pleased with a painting I did of the cliffs above the Crooked River outside of Bend, Oregon, where I was fly fishing last summer.
I’m also happy with a sunset landscape up in the Owens River area near Mammoth called “the Clouds were Hung for a Poet’s Eye” and a nocturne painting of the Goleta Slough near UCSB. I like nocturnes, they are a different color palette and a change from the ordinary sunset or sunrise landscape paintings.”
Q. WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW?
A. “So many ideas, so little time! My photo files are filled with hundreds of ideas. I’m working on a springtime piece with lupines in an aspen grove that explores a contemporary design inspired by Ron Kingswood and Len Chimel.”
Q. HAVE YOU WON ANY AWARDS FOR YOUR PAINTINGS?
A. “I think I won an award once, but honestly, I don’t think art should be a competition. I don’t have to make a living by painting, so I try not to care what other people think of what I paint. Painting to win awards limits you to painting what other people like, I’d rather paint what I like.”

I'm sure you've heard of menopause, but what about MANopause? Just as women experience hormonal change as they age, around age 40, men enter andropause.
Men tend to experience a 1% drop of testosterone production every year after the onset of andropause, and while the changes may be subtle in the beginning, this has a cascading effect on your total health.
My name is Stephanie Wolff. I'm the CEO and owner of the Novus Anti-Aging Center, one of the largest sexual wellness clinics in the country. We focus on a number of regenerative medicine treatments to get your body functioning the way it's supposed to!
One of our main treatments are Hormone Optimization Plans. I've seen countless men walk into our clinic as shells of their former selves. They're miserable and making everyone else in their lives miserable as a result!
The reason behind this? Imbalanced hormones! It's impossible to feel like your best self if your internal chemistry is out of whack! Let's just focus on testosterone, as it is so important for men (and women). Lack of testosterone can make you feel constantly tired, unfocused and unmotivated. Testosterone is like the drummer in a marching band of 50 hormones—it keeps the heartbeat, energy, muscle mass and libido strong and vibrant.
The craziest part is that most doctors won't even look at your testosterone levels unless specifically asked. Even when doctors do test, they do such a surface level analysis that as long as you're hitting the bare minimum they will see it as a normal level.
I once had a 39-year-old patient with the testosterone levels of a 75 year old! If they
had just accepted their doctor's opinion that their T-levels were “normal," he would still be suffering from fatigue, low libido and a host of other issues.
At Novus, we order a comprehensive blood panel from a lab that centers on testing hormones. And blood work alone is not a consistent way to evaluate hormone issues; an accompanying appraisal of other factors like body mass, physical strength, sex drive, sleep habits and emotional health needs to be incorporated.
Some signs of low T that you may notice are decreased muscle mass, unexpected mood changes, sleeplessness and a decrease in brain power. If you notice yourself often losing track of things, or even forgetting to complete tasks entirely, don't let people convince you this is just the aging process taking over.
Testosterone deficiency can definitely impair your thought and cognition. Even worse, if you're experiencing a decline in testosterone levels, it can lead to other health concerns like osteoporosis and heart disease.
So what can you do to keep your T levels where they're meant to be? At Novus we offer Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Pellet Therapy among other solutions, but there's plenty you can do with your own hands—or should I say legs. Daily walks to get your heart rate up are a great start! Eventually you can try to evolve that into jogging and then maybe even running! Even if it's just for 10 minutes a day, your body will thank you for making that daily effort.

FDA approved SMILE Eye Laser Surgery
SMILE is short for Small Incision Lenticular Extraction. SMILE Laser eye surgery is a game changer in laser vision correction. Dr. Khanna is experienced in the use of the only FDA approved laser for SMILE, Visumax. Dr. Khanna is experienced in the use of this laser to carve a sliver of tissue in 30 seconds within the cornea. Cornea trained surgeon Dr.Khanna, skillfully and painlessly removes this thin tissue through a small opening. The recovery is quick with patients returning to work and sports in a day or two. The absence of the cornea flap causes less dry eye. Flapless also makes it safer, as there is less chance of the flap getting displaced. Therefore, even people who could not have Lasik, like surfers or those engaged in contact sports can SMILE.
SMILE vs Lasik
Lasik has a flap which can get displaced or allow debris, cells or bugs to creep in. There is no flap in SMILE making it safer.
SMILE vs PRK
The healing in PRK is slow and painful while that in SMILE is painless and fast.
Who can perform SMILE?
Only highly competent Lasik eye surgeons, like Rajesh Khanna, MD who are certified by Zeiss can perform SMILE laser eye surgery.
Am I a candidate for SMILE?

Nothing says spring like the aroma of fresh-cut herbs in a crisp, cold, cocktail. With warmer weather finally here, growing herbs at home can transform your cocktail hour and add a fresh kick to your springtime favorites.
Growing herbs is incredibly easy and can be done in a variety of ways—from a container in a window, to a planter box in the yard. With a container or garden full of fresh herbs, you will be ready to take your cocktails up a notch.
Basil is a bright herb that is easy to grow and perfect for cocktails. Make sure to harvest immediately before mixing drinks and take leaves from the top to ensure a continual harvest. Fresh muddled basil leaves lend a crispness to the Gin Basil Cucumber cocktail.
Sage is easy to grow and does well in containers. The leaves add an earthy freshness to a refreshing cherry-infused Bourbon.
Mint is also easy to grow, but give it lots of room, as it likes to spread out and is virtually indestructible in the garden. Mint is a versatile herb but is especially lovely in the Rhubarb Mint Mojito.
Try recreating these refreshing cocktails with herbs grown at home and take your cocktail game to new heights!
