Exploring Our WonderFull Community Every month we marvel as the magazines come together and we edit and perfect each of the informative articles about so many inspiring and generous people, events, nonprofits and more in our local communities. While the articles change each month, one thing is consistent—there is never a shortage of incredible topics to write about. Our amazing community just keeps on giving—from artists who donate portions of their sales to support conservation efforts, to local schools and educational foundations like the Boys & Girls Clubs that spearhead efforts to ensure our youth are happy and healthy—the efforts of each and every individual and organization combine to create a neighborhood we love to call home. This month’s focus, Explore, encourages you to be curious, learn more about and get involved in the wonderful events, places and happenings all around us. After reading this month’s issue, you’ll want to make reservations to participate in the specialty culinary experiences featured in “Tantalizing Culinary Experiences to Taste & Talk About,” such as the elusive Eat Your Drink pop-up, Like No Other, by well-known Chef Matthew Biancaniello. Plan to bring the whole family to learn about the Chumash culture and be mesmerized by the powerful dance and music of Native Americans at the 23rd Annual Chumash Day Powwow and Intertribal Gathering this month in Malibu. And nature lovers of all ages will be awed by the beautiful artwork of local Allied Artists at the 10th Annual King Gillette Ranch Visitor Center Art Show on April 16, where proceeds of all sales benefit the National Park Service and various conservation efforts. You can also discover design trends to enhance and update your living spaces at Thousand Oaks Fireside and Design, and find out how a holistic approach can help ensure your best health at Duben Holistic Health Center in two more of this month’s knowledge-packed articles. We invite you to read on and explore the many wonders we’ve collectively created in this community that we love and cherish so much. Enjoy!

Housing markets change, but the benefits of owning a home never change. No matter how the housing market changes, there are some things about owning a home that never change—like the personal benefits it can provide. When you own your home, you likely feel a sense of attachment because of the comfort it gives and also because it’s a space that’s truly yours. Over the last few years, we’ve fully embraced the meaning of our homes as we spent more time than ever in them. As a result, the emotional benefits our homes provide have become even more important to us. As the most recent State of the American Homeowner from Unison puts it:
one thing has stayed the same: the home continues to be of the utmost importance and a place of security and comfort. The same study from Unison notes: homeowners say they feel secure, 91% ofstable, or successful owning a home
64% has made their home more important to them than ever
of American homeowners say living through a pandemic
It’s no surprise this study also reveals that homeowners now love their homes even more as our attachments to them have grown:
More Homeowners Are Falling in Love
Percent of Respondents Who Feel Emotionally Attached to Their Homes
The National Association of Realtors (NAR) also explains:
“In addition to tangible financial benefits, homeownership brings substantial social benefits for [households], communities, and the country as a whole.” In other words, not only does owning a home build your net worth over time, but it also gives you and your loved ones a place to thrive. And by living near people with shared experiences, homeownership helps you connect with your community and contribute meaningfully.
Bottom Line Whether you’re thinking of buying your first home, moving up to your dream home, or downsizing to something that better fits your changing lifestyle, let me be the key to unlocking a home you can truly fall in love with.

There is no shortage of extraordinary culinary experiences in Southern California. These favorite unforgettable splurge-worthy meals are sure to excite and delight all of your senses.
EAT YOUR DRINK + TASTING MENU WITH MATTHEW BIANCANIELLO Those who have been around long enough in L.A. will recognize Matthew Biancaniello from The Library Bar at The Hollywood Roosevelt, circa 2008 to 2012. Known for his adventurous cocktails based on farm fresh, unique and organic ingredients, Matthew visits at least five different farmers markets to ignite his imagination. Now his libations can be thoroughly appreciated with bites and dishes that run 14 courses as a Los Angeles pop up, Like No Other. The 3-hour experience is in an intimate setting with typically around six diners, where Matthew shares his knowledge and experience of what’s in season and his
process behind the creations. Courses and sips sound like poetry—ogo seaweed-infused Mezcal with lemon and strawberry guavas served in a nautilus shell and garnished with viola flowers; lamb tartare with onion, mint and cinnamon topped with a raw quail egg and a side of pickled Meiwa kumquats in white balsamic and pickled daikon; and persimmon brandy old fashioned with candy cap mushroom bitters served in a sea sponge. Check out Matthew’s YouTube Channel, Liquid Journeys (@liquidjourneys9760), for cocktail magic and be on the lookout for the release of his second book, Omakocktail. Learn more at MatthewBiancaniello.com or book reservations at ExploreTock.com/ EatYourDrink. The location changes frequently and is sent the day before.
GUCCI OSTERIA DA MASSIMO BOTTURA, BEVERLY HILLS L.A.’s new Michelin Star recipient sits atop the Beverly Hills Gucci store with an
open-air view of Rodeo Drive. The second installment of famed Italian Chef Massimo Bottura’s collaboration with Gucci, the restaurant impresses with exceptional hospitality and an inventive menu full of surprises. Here Executive Chef Mattia Agazzi creates playful dishes like risotto camouflaged as pizza where the burnt caper tastes like a pizza crust. Traveling from Italy to California, Chef Mattia fuses age-old Italian cuisine traditions with produce-driven California coast offerings—pulling from his childhood and first impressions of L.A.—like a dish built to look like the arches of Walt Disney Concert Hall. Cod as Milanese was a favorite course, in which 24-hour miso-marinated black cod is prepared inside a crisp breading (almost like arancini) with tomato terrine. Book a five-course prix fixe dinner like the Beverly Hills Classics tasting menu with exquisitely selected wine pairings or the new fish-forward Cali State of Mind tasting menu. GucciOsteria.com/en

Tavern at Zaca Creek
NOZAWA BAR, BEVERLY HILLS
OUTSTANDING IN THE FIELD
THE TAVERN AT ZACA CREEK, BUELLTON
There are many high-end omakase experiences in L.A., but this one is above the rest, featuring more than 20 courses of primarily nigiri sushi plus sashimi and handrolls. Adventurous eaters can expect surprises like clear Japanese jellyfish, monkfish liver and a 4-foot octopus tentacle hoisted high by the chef. This intimate sushi bar tucked behind L.A.’s favorite SUGARFISH in Beverly Hills is led by Chef Fujita. He and Chef Nozawa visit the L.A. fish markets each morning to select the best available fare for the menu. There are only 10 seats and guests must arrive on time as every course is served to everyone at once. Make a reservation for one of two seatings (6 and 8:30 p.m.) to appreciate rare cuts of Kama-toro (bluefin tuna’s fatty collar meat), Santa Barbara uni, Pacific Northwest oysters, Baja California bluefin tuna, Alaskan ikura (salmon roe), New Zealand pink lobster, scallop, sea eel, giant clam, large tamago portions, and beyond. There is a reason Nozawa Bar earned a Michelin Star! NozawaBar.com
Catch this roving restaurant all over the world and often in California as they have made their mark frequently on the Malibu Pier and at other awe-inspiring outdoor SoCal settings. Seated at a long table, guests have the opportunity to break bread with strangers and share meals created by guest chefs who source locally, while celebrating the workers who make the meal possible—chefs, farmers, vintners, brewers and more. These one-day pop-up culinary adventures are truly outstanding, as farmers and chefs set the table at farms, beaches, vineyards, mountain tops, city streets, fishing docks and other extraordinary sites. They offer a shared connection for one time in one place— experiences that will never be replicated. Almost like an ephemeral piece of art, they are celebrations of humanity, encouraging family style meals and lively discussions at the table. Most start with several hours of passed appetizers and beverages before the seated dinner. Join the mailing list at OutStandingintheField.com and book as soon as tickets are released.
Open since August 2020, with Inn rooms opening shortly thereafter, the food and cocktail programs are the best thing to come to Buellton in decades, featuring dishes sourced from local farmers, ranchers and fisherfolk. Around a 2-hour drive from Los Angeles, slow down in the Santa Ynez Valley and make The Tavern at Zaca Creek a focal point of your trip. Preserving the allure of an old tavern, the bar program not only offers local wines but a massive list of Mezcal, bourbon and curated spirits some 600 bottles strong. A lavish list of vodkas will have you ordering a Caviar Martini with JCB vodka and blue cheese olives. The new Executive Chef Anthony Minniti has rolled out over-the-top menu items like Caviar Dip & Fries and a Loaded Caviar Baked Potato with creme fraiche, chives, cheddar and of course, caviar. While Buellton may be best known for pea soup, the surf and turf are the standouts here. Share the 16-oz. New York steak or the Seared Bluefin Tuna with roasted tomatillo sauce, Sicilian caponata with eggplant, roasted tomatoes, garlic,

GASTRO GARAGE—THE TORCHED EXPERIENCE AT SLS HOTEL BEVERLY HILLS There are gimmicks and then there is fire fun-a sort of molecular gastronomy—that is this 8-course pop-up dinner that used to pop off around L.A. and can now be found firing food at the SLS Hotel. Gastro “Mechanics” flame and seer food with blow torches, and the promise of the evening is delicious, unique dishes. Think torched maple-glazed carrots served on drill bits with a foam dip, sous-vide salmon scorched before your eyes and ready to be dipped in a foam essence, tender marinated short ribs, a deconstructed pizza mouth explosion, a Cubano and injected brioche doughnuts. The founder is an actor who worked at Bazaar at the SLS Hotel and was inspired by Chef Jose Andres’ insane creations that made guests go wild. TheGastroGarage.com

23RD ANNUAL CHUMASH DAY POWWOW & INTERTRIBAL GATHERING:
22
DAVIS, CITY OF MALIBU MEDIA TECHNICIAN

CELEBRATING CULTURE & COMMUNITY
M UST SE E | A RTS + CU LTURE
Kick off the month with the 23rd Annual Chumash Day Powwow and Intertribal Gathering at Malibu Bluffs Park hosted by the City of Malibu on April 1 and 2. Malibu’s largest annual special event honors and celebrates the area’s original residents and First Americans, the Chumash, and attracts thousands of visitors to the area for the weekend festivities. After a 2-year pandemic hiatus, the gathering is returning to its full schedule, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, with the grand entry beginning at noon when the ceremonies and dancing commence. It is estimated that the Chumash people have inhabited the Malibu coastline for the past 15,000 years and originally called the area Humawilo, which means “where the surf sounds loudly.” Today, the landscape and culture have radically transformed, making this event an incredible opportunity to learn about the rich history of what has been considered one of the most unique maritime cultures on the continent. “It is an opportunity for the community to actually interact with tribal people. We’re not
gone, we are still here, and we are still a very large part of American culture,” says Chumash Elder and Spiritual Advisor Alan Spirit Hawk Salazar. The days will be filled with Native American cultural elements of ceremony, dancing, singing and storytelling. “It is such a treasure to have Chumash culture in our own backyard, and this event is a perfect opportunity for the community to come learn and honor the history of the Chumash as well as the present-day Chumash people and culture,” comments City of Malibu’s Recreation Manager Kate Gallo. In addition to the Chumash gathering over the weekend, all Native American tribes are welcome and there will be representation from many other tribes from the greater Southern California area as well as from across North America, including the Aztecs. Representing the Chumash people in leadership roles at the Powwow are Head Man Aaron Martin and Head Woman Emily Sierra supported by Head Young Man Gabriel Razo and Head Young Woman Aislynn Arnold. Randy Pico will be the announcer for the entire event and Vic Chavez will be the Arena Director. Guests are invited to experience the powerful display of intertribal dancing in the main arena and shop an array of genuine handcrafted products—handmade flutes, pottery, jewelry, sun catchers and more—made by authentic Native American artisans. More than 20 vendors and several local nonprofits, including the Chumash Museum of Thousand Oaks and the Department of Native American Services from the LA County Library, will be onsite, as well as great food vendors serving up delectable fare. “There has been a major revitalization of Native American culture in the past 10 years, from language revitalization to the arts to dance
to storytelling, especially here in Chumash territory,” says Salazar, who has been involved in tribal causes his entire life and will be sharing stories, prayers and blessings throughout the weekend and invites those interested in becoming the next generation of native knowledge keepers to come, learn and take part. “It is a spiritual weekend… the force of the drums, the power of the singers’ voices and the incredible moment when all the tribes dance together and their feet all hit the ground at the exact same time on the final beat. We are very lucky in Southern California to have such a large native population.” Bring the whole family to experience this opportunity to celebrate Native American culture and discover what there is to learn from a people who deeply understand the relationship between nature, humankind and the human spirit. Parking is available at 23575 Civic Center Way (at the corner of Webb Way and Civic Center Way). Guests can hop aboard the free shuttle to Malibu Bluffs Park to enjoy this free and educational celebration of culture and the long history of Humawilo, this land we all call home. Montecito Bank & Trust: Montecito Bank & Trust is the largest locally owned community bank on the Central Coast. The fact that it’s locally owned means that this bank has a loyal interest in the people it serves. A Ventura County Reporter Reader Recommended winner of the Best of Ventura County award and recognized as the Best Bank by The Institute for Extraordinary Banking, MB&T has a 47-year history of corporate philanthropy, donating millions of dollars to benefit the people of Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. Michael Towbes, a founder of MB&T and owner from 1983 until
his passing in 2017, acted on the belief that it was his responsibility to help make the communities he served a better place to work and live. His legacy continues today under the direction of George Leis, president and COO, and Janet Garufis, chairman of the board and CEO, and their team of dedicated associates.
HOW THE GIVING BEGAN The story began in 1993 with annual Anniversary Grants to nonprofit organizations, based on nominations by MB&T associates who then voted on the most deserving

nonprofit that they wanted to support. Anniversary Grants remain a pillar of the bank’s philanthropy, and one of the many ways associates can participate in MB&T’s culture of giving. Fast forward 20 years, and building on the bank’s Anniversary Grant awards, Mr. Towbes decided to invest a portion of his bank’s profits into local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations whose missions serve low- and moderate-income individuals and families across Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. The first Community Dividends® luncheon, honoring 100 nonprofit organizations, was held, fittingly, during Thanksgiving week 2003. At that first ceremony, each organization received a $10,000 check to help continue their missions to serve. The Dividends and Anniversary Grant programs continue today, along with two awards highlighting specific philanthropic efforts, including the Michael Towbes Community Impact Dividend and the Jerry Parent Legacy Award (Jerry Parent was a founding board member).

and medical, and 3.7% toward various other causes, including animals, parks and human rights. The biggest surprise in 2022 was that instead of 1 million dollars, MB&T marked the 20-year anniversary by increasing the annual giving to 2 million dollars! Five organizations were singled out with larger gifts of $100,000 each because they delivered “critical and sustainable services to a large number of the most vulnerable people in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.”
THIS YEAR’S RECIPIENTS: • CommUnify: to support its Family SelfSufficiency (FSS) Program that focuses on longterm family stabilization. • Pacific Pride Foundation: to support its goal of becoming a bilingual organization by 2024. • Peoples’ Self-Help Housing Corporation: to support its Camino Scholars Education Program, which provides education services, including school tutoring and college advising. • Santa Barbara Street Medicine/Doctors Without Walls: to support its Wrap Around Care Program for medical and behavioral health services. • The Arc Foundation of Ventura County (and Santa Barbara County): to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in job readiness training and placement. When money is awarded to universities, such as Cal State Channel Islands or Cal Lutheran, it goes toward scholarships for underserved students or to support mentorships. Funding programs like “Women United” helps single women go to college. In some instances, when there are capital campaigns for big projects such as the Santa Barbara Children’s Library Plaza or the Food Bank Warehouse, MB&T will lend funds against pledges. “We also honor those (at MB&T) who volunteer,” says Garufis. While 5,404 hours were logged in 2021, 2022 had a dramatic increase at 6,269 hours. Organizations that MB&T volunteers assisted include the following: • Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce • Hospice of the Conejo • Community Conscience/Under One Roof • Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks
“As goodwill ambassadors, Board members know lots of people in the community, which brings visibility to the needs of the organizations we represent.”
Up to 200 awards are available every year in the Dividends program. To qualify for the Dividends, applications are submitted to the Board. The sponsorship and donation committee team meets weekly to process the requests throughout the year on a rolling basis. The requests are screened for support of programs, services or general organizational funding during the early fall. Applicant organizations are categorized according to where they meet community needs: • arts and culture, • youth and education, • social services, or • health and medical. Preference is given to organizations whose missions and/or specific support programs serve over 50% low- and moderate-income individuals and families as defined by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. According to Garufis, the Dividends program donates a total of at least one million dollars annually, with the average amount awarded being $2,500, up to $10,000. In 2022, 35.7% of the dividend funds went toward youth and education, 29.1% toward social services, 13.5% toward arts and culture, 18% toward health

It should be noted that there are employees who volunteer at organizations that have helped them when they needed it in the past. It’s really quite moving,” says Garufis. Jill Haney, VP and the manager of the Westlake branch of MB&T, sets a prime example of the type of volunteerism Garufis advocates. In fact, Haney was the 2020 winner of the Michael Towbes “Do the Right Thing” Outstanding Community Service Award and the Milton M. Teague Award for Outstanding Community Volunteerism during the organization’s 13th annual Spirit Awards Gala in 2017. When asked how she spends her time away from her desk, Haney talks about her work on the boards of a number of nonprofit organizations, including the Conejo Valley Community Foundation, the United Way and the Gold Coast Veterans Foundation. “As goodwill ambassadors, Board members know lots of people in the community, which brings visibility to the needs of the

organizations we represent. We go to events, solicit funds and offer our organizational skills (as business leaders),” says Haney. Every time MB&T finds a way to assist such organizations as The Conejo Valley Community Foundation, they can pay it forward into the community. For example, during the pandemic lockdown, local businesses stayed afloat with micro-grants from the Foundation’s fund of $110,000. Haney recalls a personal favorite volunteer job at the Christmas Festival of Trees at the Oaks Mall benefiting Hospice of the Conejo. MB&T joined numerous local businesses to sponsor a tree to be auctioned. “A client bought and decorated a Mickey Mouse Tree, so we (at MB&T) did a Mini Mouse Tree that turned out really well and was sold at the auction. The time spent decorating also counts toward volunteer hours,” says Haney. One component of MB&T’s Associate Matching Grant program is the opportunity to convert such volunteered time to financial donations. During 2022 this benefit allowed 36 associates to give over $4,300 to organizations they are connected to. No matter how you go about it, MB&T wants to help: whether it’s encouraging employees to go out and find causes that speak to their hearts, offering professional expertise on boards or giving financial support. It was Towbes’ hope that MB&T’s work in the community would inspire and motivate other business to contribute too, ensuring a bright future for all in this beautiful place that we call home.

Allied Artists Showcase Natural Beauty ARTICLE BY TRACY MARCYNZSYN

Local artist Virginia Kamhi’s “Churning Sea” depicting a cliffside view off Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu and “Hilltop Sentinel” featuring a gnarled and weathered old oak tree represent two of the many breathtaking natural landscapes on display at the Allied Artists 10th Annual King Gillette Ranch Visitor Center Art Show on Sunday, April 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. “As an artist, I desire to paint the poetry, imaginative power and rhythms of the natural wonders that surround me,” says Virginia, an 8-year member of Allied Artists of the Santa Monica Mountains, a nonprofit organization founded over 20 years ago to paint and preserve the unique natural beauty of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. “I believe that when I paint plein air I am absorbing sensory images that are incorporated into my work. The warmth or chill of the air, the scents, the sights and
sounds, the taste of salt in the air, etc., all become a part of my paintings,” Virginia says. Fellow member, Los Angeles-based artist Ruth Askren paints wilderness terrain focusing on natural spaces around the L.A. basin where people go to get outside and away from the city. “Wide open and frequently free to the public, these natural spaces have been here since we first walked the Earth but were often seen as wasteland. I hope to underscore the intrinsic value of these local ecological zones as they resonate with human history. They are their own reasons for being, and I enjoy painting about that,” says Ruth, an Allied Artist member since 2021. “The practice of painting while standing at the outdoor scene of your subject is a unique and compelling way to paint. Being part of this group gives me a friendly bunch of people to do that work with and to show together with,” she adds. Allied Artists members enjoy participating in free monthly paint-outs held the second Saturday of each month, which provides a unique opportunity for any painter to enjoy a sense of camaraderie with likeminded people and spend time in nature. Held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the paint-outs feature a painting demonstration and friendly critique and are open to any artist, media and skill level. “I love the artists that are drawn to it because of its mission and camaraderie,” notes Allied Artists President Barbara Freund. “We support rather than compete with each other. Each recognizes that we express things differently through our styles and that paintings resonate with different viewers.” The Allied Artists’ annual art exhibit and sale features the works of many local artists displaying original representational oil, acrylic, watercolor and pastel landscape and seascape paintings of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and national, state, regional, county and local parks and natural recreation areas in Southern California. A portion of the proceeds will go to support the Western National Park Association, National Park Service, National Wildlife Fund and Save LA Cougars, among other organizations supported by the artists. “Being a part of Allied Artists enables me to paint the natural beauty around us and to share it with others through our exhibits, and then help to protect it through our donations to various environmental groups. It really is a circle of love,” says Donna Jean Goldstein, Porter Ranch resident and Allied Artist

member, along with her husband, Joe Goldstein. “Exhibiting at King Gillette Ranch gives us the opportunity to help contribute to the National Park Service,” she adds. The dedicated group of award-winning artists invites the public to experience their depictions of nature’s beauty and to perhaps take a piece home to support the cause. “I think it is important for art viewers to know how much they inspire artists,” notes Barbara. “For me, experiencing that moment in time when my painting resonates with them, speaking that language of shared experiences, evoking a memory, reminding them of what we hold dear, is profoundly inspirational.” Nature lovers of all ages are sure to be inspired by the beautiful artwork on display at the exhibit on April 16. “Allied Artists are devoted to preserving the natural beauty that surrounds us here where we are fortunate to live,” says Virginia. “This natural beauty feeds me and nurtures my artistic soul.” Visit Allied-Artists.com for more information.

CVUSD Prioritizes Student Wellness
ARTICLE BY ALICIA DOYLE In response to overwhelming evidence that youth mental health has been declining over the past decade, the Conejo Valley Unified School District has launched a Wellness Program that proactively addresses the social, emotional and mental health needs of students. Available to all secondary students, the program uses a multi-tiered approach that includes school-wide mental health awareness activities and classroom presentations, as well as ongoing small group and individual counseling. The program targets students in middle and high school and is offered before, during and after school depending upon the schedule of each school site. “At the high schools, drop-in services are available where students can go for brief support when they are struggling with things like difficulty with their peer relationships,
anxiety, grief and loss, and other mental health challenges,” says Heather Chamberlin-Scholle, the district’s director of Mental Health and Wellness Services. The program is unique for two reasons—first it is proactive in nature, which means that students can access support in the moment. “One of the goals of the program is to prevent students from developing more serious mental health challenges by offering in the moment access to mental support early,” ChamberlinScholle explains. “Second, by having the service available on campus, barriers to accessing mental health support are removed as students can easily access services in a location that is familiar to them and their families.” The Conejo Unified School District’s Wellness Program is staffed by mental health professionals and graduate students

obtaining master’s degrees in a mental health-related field. These professionals are trained to offer evidence-based, therapeutic support to students to address a range of mental health issues. “It is our intent that through the provision of early intervention, students can get the support they need early on, preventing a more complex problem in the future,” ChamberlinScholle says. The goal is to optimize learning and mental health by giving students skills needed to manage the stressors of daily living in a healthy manner, to increase mental health awareness and to prevent children, adolescents and their families from having to deal with the factors contributing to mental health declines alone. “Prevention is a core value and goal of the program,” Chamberlin-Scholle emphasizes. “We want students and their families to know they are not alone in dealing with mental health-related struggles and to seek out support at the onset of social-emotional or mental health-related problems.” To understand the gravity of these struggles, Chamberlin-Scholle pointed out the advisory issues in December 2021 by Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, the U.S. Surgeon General, entitled, “Protecting Youth Mental Health.” Murthy’s report outlines the precipice upon which communities sit when it comes to addressing the mental health needs of their children, including more than 10 decades of research that outline a consistent decline in the mental health of children. “The report cites a multitude of research to support this claim,” says Chamberlin-Scholle,
adding that mental health consists of many complex factors, including biological, environmental and generational components. In the Conejo Valley Unified School District, “we’ve seen increases in youth mental health problems due to a number of factors, such as increased access to information that may be too complex for kids to process developmentally (i.e., climate change, school shootings, war), social media, grief and loss, isolation, academic pressures, racial equity, disrupted attachment and barriers to obtaining mental health intervention at the onset of the problem.” “That said, it is important not to be too prescriptive when it comes to the causes of mental health,” Chamberlin-Scholle adds. “Often students experience a constellation of factors that lead to declines in mental health, a perfect storm of sorts. The Conejo Valley has not been immune to these factors… I feel it is the responsibility of the community to support kids so they can grow into healthy, happy, functioning adults.” The Conejo Valley Unified School District is committed to supporting the mental health and overall well-being of its students. Earlier this year, the Conejo Valley Unified School District was awarded an $11.3 million grant to enhance school-based mental health services from the U.S. Department of Education. The District will use these important funds over the next 5 years to continue to expand and build upon the mental health services and wellness program it provides to students across all of its campuses. Boys & Girls Clubs Summer Camps: Fun, Sun & Friendships ARTICLE BY ALICIA DOYLE
40
K I D S C OR N E R | ED U CATION
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Conejo Valley are dedicated to providing safe spaces for the kids in the community to learn and grow into amazing citizens and future leaders. “We provide specialized programming and trained staff to enhance the lives of our members and their families in a positive environment that cultivates academic success, healthy lifestyles, good character and citizenship,” says Chris Tusler, Marketing & Public Relations coordinator. To that end, the club’s summer camps stand out because “we design all our activities around highyield activities that create an enriching experience for our members,” says Tusler, adding that each week has themed activities to create choices that match each member’s diverse personalities. The summer camp weekly themes keep things fresh while including the essentials, such as water play, arts and crafts, group games, science, sports, technology, field trips and more. “Giving our kids an opportunity to spend the summer at the camp allows them to make the best memories while staying in a safe environment that helps maintain healthy habits while out of school,” Tusler emphasizes. This summer, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Conejo Valley are changing from 3-week sessions to single weeks to better accommodate traveling schedules and offer flexible opportunities for families. “We hope that by making our camps as accessible as possible, we can help more kids learn new skills or interests and develop into responsible adults,” Tusler says. He noted that when interviewing summer camp members last year, almost everyone told him their favorite part of camp was meeting such a diversity of people from different backgrounds, and making friendships that they knew would continue past the end of summer. “Some had tried new foods and activities from cultures they had never even heard of,” Tusler recalls. With four unique summer camps running different themes and activities every week, “we have over 38 unique camp experiences.”
Some of the common activities featured at every camp are sports like flag football and soccer; gaming tournaments on Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart; as well as healthy meals and snacks, which provide opportunities for members to learn to cook their own healthy lunches. There’s also a huge variety of team-building games, and each camp will have a “morning huddle” when the kids take an active part in leading and preparing each day’s activities. “We expect our weekly themes and pricing structure to be the most popular offering in this summer’s program because they will allow so much customization of the summer experience,” Tusler explains. If you’re interested in supporting this program as a volunteer, camp counselors are needed. You can choose to volunteer at any of the club’s summer camps and help local kids develop healthy lifestyles, good character and create memories that will last a lifetime. Summer camps will run from June 20 to August 11 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the following locations: Rocky & Lon Morton Club at Sequoia Middle School, Marion & John E. Anderson Youth Center at Los Cerritos Middle School, Cal & Marje Johnston Club at Colina Middle School and the Dr. Richard Grossman Club at Chaparral Elementary School. Morton, Anderson and Johnston Clubs will be open to grades TK-8 and Grossman will be open to grades TK-5. Summer camps take place Monday through Friday. Tusler noted that “we will be closed on June 19 and July 4 for Juneteenth observed and the Fourth of July,” so the first week of summer camp will begin on Tuesday, June 20, instead of Monday, June 19. The weekly camp rate is $205 or a daily rate of $50 per day. To attend from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. weekly, the rate is $137.50. Scholarships based on need are made available by generous donations to allow anyone to attend. “We believe every child has the right to a great future, so we provide scholarships to ensure nobody is ever turned away to due to their inability to pay,” Tusler adds. For more information or to sign up, reach out to your local Club Director, or visit BGConejo.org/programs/ summer-camps/.

A Triad of Care:
Duben Holistic Chiropractic Center ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI

“People come in and they’re in terrible pain, and when they walk out, they feel a lot better,” says Dr. Alan Duben of Duben Holistic Chiropractic Center in Westlake Village. “They can play with their grandkids again, or sit at their computers and work, and just continue with their lifestyles.” As an athlete and competitor in Olympic weightlifting, in 1996 Dr. Duben was benched by a serious back injury. After going to many traditional doctors and therapists, he went to a chiropractor and was back on his feet in less than a week. “I went on to become a two-time collegiate national champion in 1997 and 1998. I owe a great deal to him for my athletic accomplishments; he kept my body balanced and after that, I rarely got hurt or even sick.” His partner, Dr. Lindsay Erickson, also discovered the wonders of chiropractic medicine at a young age. She went from being a healthy child to a sickly college student suffering from bouts of strep throat and chronic sinus infections. After having her tonsils removed and taking rounds of antibiotics, she entered chiropractic college and found a better solution for her problems. She began to get adjusted on a regular basis and never suffered from another sinus infection. While traditional chiropractors make adjustments to put the body back into alignment, Drs. Duben and Erickson take it much further. Back in 1895, the originator of chiropractic medicine, Dr. Daniel David Palmer, had something called a Triad of Health, which encompassed structure, nutrition and emotion, explains Dr. Duben. “Most other chiropractors are just doing one side of that triangle—they're dealing with the structure, and it works, but I knew it wasn't enough.” Their approach is holistic—they deal with each part of the triad to provide patients with not only temporary pain relief, but lifelong physical and emotional health. “Our diagnostic is based off of a technique called applied kinesiology, which is muscle testing, so we’re essentially using your body as its own diagnostic tool, like a biofeedback mechanism,” he says. For example, if a patient is experiencing hip pain, they’re going to test all the muscles around the hip. Is
the muscle turned on or off? If they find a muscle's not working, they then figure out what modality is needed to treat it. “That's when we get into the holistic approach,” says Dr. Duben. “Do we need to go in a physical direction, an emotional direction or a nutritional direction? “What I found through different types of nutritional testing was that if their physiology wasn't functioning well, I had to figure out the specific nutrient or nutrients they needed,” he says. In order to discover what these deficiencies are, Duben Holistic Chiropractic Center utilizes functional testing that allows the doctors to find if a specific nutrient is needed. These results also allow the doctors to ascertain whether patients are predisposed to any conditions or issues that could impact their health. “We also use the Heart Sound Recorder, where we're listening to the mechanical movements of the heart,” says Dr. Duben. “From the noises of the heart, we're able to find out what nutrition their heart is missing. The brain and heart are fantastic windows into the body.” For the past 20 years, the practice has been using supplements from an organic farm in Wisconsin and others from an herbal company in Australia. These supplements can also be ordered on their website. “We were doing a lot of nutritional work but still didn't feel like we were helping people enough,” he says. “Since the last part of that triad was emotions, we started using NET (Neuro-emotional Technique), which identifies and helps patients release emotional patterns that can lead to physical ailments. It’s a very simple, quick adjustment that happens to the spine while the patient focuses on a traumatic event.” When it comes to his own nutrition, Dr. Duben is fortunate to be married to a personal chef. “Marcy and I are definitely foodies and whenever we go on vacation, it's about the restaurants and trying new things.” One of the couple’s favorite pastimes is going on walking food tours in different cities with their teenagers, Asher and Kaia. Designs to Delight: EXPLORE UNIQUE FIRESIDE DÉCOR FOR YOUR HOME
A fireplace can add coziness to any room, so think outside the box (or the usual living room or den). They can be installed in bedrooms, kitchens, dining rooms and even bathrooms to create a unique and welcoming space, whether your design preference is modern, traditional or somewhere in between. “There are multi-sided see-through fireplaces that you can put between two rooms,” says Tom Malinowski, manager of Thousand Oaks Fireside and

“We also work with directly with contractors,” says Tom. “If the homeowners already have somebody designing and building their outdoor island or kitchen, we collaborate with product offerings, cutout dimensions and design help.” Pizza ovens using wood or gas are also in high demand for backyards. “We have all different Italian-made models from Alfa Forni, and we also carry ceramic cookers, which you can use to, say, smoke a brisket for 12 hours or 15 hours.” Thousand Oaks Fireside also offers fire and water features for backyards. “We have several manufacturers of regular fire pits, but we also deal with a company called The Outdoor Plus,” he says. “It’s a local company that creates water and fire features where you have fire coming out of the water. So, you can hear and see the water coming over the edge, but then you have a fire pit in the middle of it. It looks like something out of Las Vegas.” These come in a variety of designs, depending on your style and preference. In addition to fireplaces, the shop also carries a wide selection of high-quality fireplace accessories, mantels, charcoal and gas barbecue grills, and there’s a whole room dedicated to mailboxes. Thousand Oaks Fireside is part of a three-store chain that includes Encino Fireplace Shop in Encino and the Floyd S. Lee Fireplace & BBQ in Pasadena. Design in Thousand Oaks. “Another option is a threesided fireplace that has two long sides which can also function as a room definer, and that’s usually placed between a living room and dining room or den. They are also sometimes installed between a master bedroom and the master bathroom.” Other places he and his team have installed fireplaces are in man caves and even in a wine cellar. “You really don't want a whole lot of heat in a wine cellar, but the arched fireplace we put in looked very cool,” he says. “It was kind of cave-like.” Whatever the size or shape of a room, or the reason for wanting a fireplace, he and his staff will find the best option for your needs. “In our area, fireplaces are not so much for heat,” says Tom. “They just make the space they’re in a lot homier. And, there’s something about the organic feel of fire and bringing it indoors.” Since California is cracking down on greenhouse gas emissions, which are produced by natural gas, electric fireplaces have become much more popular, he explains. “The technology is getting pretty intense as far as creating a product the public is willing to purchase rather than something really cheap looking like the old-fashioned ones with orange lightbulbs.” Electric is also a great alternative if your house doesn't have gas. Others choose them because they want to be more environmentally friendly. Another benefit of electric fireplaces is that you can place them absolutely anywhere. “You don't need to have a chimney or anything like that and they’re very easy to install,” says Tom. “They can even come with a heat feature.” Thousand Oaks Fireside also installs fireplaces in outdoor spaces such as cabanas, outdoor kitchens and in kitchen islands. “These are typically vented for a wood-burning unit or ventless for gas,” says Tom. “We can do ventfree fireplaces outdoors, because there's no carbon monoxide issues like there are inside.” California has banned vent-free units indoors, he explains. Outdoor kitchens are immensely popular. “Just as an indoor kitchen serves as a gathering place, so does an outdoor kitchen. It’s a great place to have a summer party. The sky is the limit with outdoor offerings—barstools, refrigeration, ice makers, even outdoor televisions. We even have glass front doors and drawers that are back-lit and change colors.” Almost anything that can be put in an indoor room to make it comfortable can be put outside.

Explore Thyself ARTICLE BY KIM PAGANO
Are you like me—always looking at ways to become better at whatever you’re doing? Work, personal, family, relationships—everything circles back to knowing yourself and reaching out further. It’s called self-exploration; if you haven't looked it up before, I did it for you. Self-exploration is the practice of examining your own thoughts, feelings, values, beliefs, identity, background, views and emotions with the purpose of better understanding yourself. You might engage in self-exploration for self-improvement, as part of therapy, out of curiosity or for its own sake. This is something I do quite frequently, checking in to see what I can do better or what I learned or didn’t learn from various situations—do you do this too? If you're reading this right now, then it's a perfect time for you to check in with yourself and reflect on what's working and what's not. There's no time like the present to do a self-check in, so here are some tips to guide your reflection: • Consider how we explore ourselves. Start by visualizing your ideal self. • Explore your many options and what you’re truly passionate about. • Try something new. • Think about what you are good at or what comes easily to you. • Evaluate your skills: What are your best skills and what makes you shine? • Identify what you value about yourself. • Ask yourself questions. • Learn something new. • Keep a journal. These are all ways to help you do a self-check in. Remember, this is your race of life, so don’t play the comparison game or be critical of yourself; love on yourself and just see where you can raise your vibration and your ability to live your best life. Looking for a business coach that can help re-spark your life? Call Kim at 805.419.0008. Start your day in a positive way and make it your best.
