“Come on! Let’s celebrate!” As Kool & The Gang remind us, “There's a party going on right here. A celebration to last throughout the years. So bring your good times and your laughter too. We gonna celebrate your party with you!” The holiday season presents many opportunities to celebrate and enjoy good times and laughter with those we love. Even more, “It’s time to come together… Everyone around the world, come on!” As we witness hardship and tragedy on the world stage and at home, it really is time to come together and unite more than ever. We need each other—each and every one of us—to lend a hand and help out in big and small ways to get through hard times, overcome obstacles and triumph, so we can celebrate all the good things in life. Whether it’s feeding the hungry, housing the homeless or just being a friend, our actions matter and have the power to make a significant impact on others. In this issue, we feature just a few of the many things we celebrate in our community. The annual performance of “The Nutcracker” by Pacific Festival Ballet, for example, heralds the holiday season as local and world-renowned ballerinas come together to showcase the beauty of this heartwarming tradition. Aldik Home is the place to go to get in the holiday spirit—walk through their beautiful tree lot to get inspired and decorate your own home for the season. We’re also excited to introduce Wild Fork, an innovative grocer that features the best frozen foods of all kinds, at great prices, to serve up delicious holiday meals fit for a celebration with friends and family. If you’re looking for a little getaway not too far to drive, consider checking in to Margaritaville in San Diego’s Gaslamp District, where you can relax and soak up the changes in attitude and latitude for a much-needed break. For those who may be grieving a lost partner, Soaring Spirits International provides resources, friendship and support for those who have been widowed. And when it’s time to think about finances for next year, our financial mavens are ready with their advice and expertise about the best money moves. Our National Giving Campaign aims to help those in need around the nation, so check it out and send us your suggestions on how to help. So let’s remember as we come together this holiday season to “celebrate good times … Cause (together) everything's gonna be all right.” Let's celebrate! Happy Holidays!

The traditions of classical ballet are steeped in a rich heritage. Originating in Italy during the Renaissance, royal courts held large social events and ballet became a part of their regular performances. Over centuries its popularity evolved spreading into the French courts, where ballet terminology was established. By the 19th century the art of classical ballet made its way to Russia where technique and artistry were defined. This focus on technique set into motion many changes. The short classical tutu as well as the pointe shoe, as we know it today, were introduced. These changes allowed audience members to witness and appreciate the dancers’ foot and leg work. Finally, in the later part of the 19th century, touring ballet productions made their way to America. One of the first American ballet companies formed by Lincoln Kirstein and George Balanchine was aptly named American Ballet. This prestigious ballet company evolved into what we know today as New York City Ballet. The creative genius of Balanchine reshaped and pushed the boundaries of classical ballet. His choreography challenged dancers and audience members alike to think outside the box and embrace ballet in a new and exciting way. Through the decades of his leadership, Balanchine groomed many American ballerinas, showcasing them center stage with his innovative choreography. His neo-classical vision for ballet inspired a whole new generation of theater enthusiasts. One of these Balanchine-inspired ballerinas is world renowned dancer, Tiler Peck. Peck, at the age of 16, was selected from the School of American Ballet to join New York City Ballet. Her unique

talent and explosive energy on stage quickly catapulted her through the ranks where she currently holds the highest title as principal ballerina. Pacific Festival Ballet, since 2010, has held the honor of Peck gracing the Fred Kavli stage as a resident guest artist in Pacific Festival Ballet’s “The Nutcracker.” Her powerful performances and technical ability continue to mesmerize audiences year after year. “When Tiler and her partner arrive from New York each year and step into rehearsal, our entire Nutcracker cast rises to a new level,” says Rehearsal Coordinator Deborah Collodel. “The stage seems to electrify, and each dancer becomes a better version of themselves! From the smallest Ginger Cookie to our SoCal professionals, everyone knows what an honor it is to share the stage with these world class ballet superstars.” Peck, known for her classical ballet prowess, is also committed to expanding ballet into new arenas. As a visionary and producer, Peck continues to tour her show in Europe, Asia and the U.S. What she and Artistic Director Kim Maselli have in common are embracing the traditions of classical ballet while pushing dance boundaries toward new and innovative directions. “Ballet, like so many elements in life, is changing and evolving,” says Maselli. “I will always respect the foundation that classical ballet gives us, but I also enjoy the opportunity to paint on a new canvas. The creative process is exciting for everyone involved. Throughout the history of ballet performances, dance has evolved with the times.” A perfect example of creativity and evolving with the times is the Pacific Festival Ballet

"Noah's Ark"

“When Tiler and her partner arrive from New York each year and step into rehearsal, our entire Nutcracker cast rises to a new level.” partnership between Hollywood composer Eric Allaman and Maselli. From 2006 to present, this duo has created three original full-length ballets: “The Sea Princess,” “Noah’s Ark,” and “Camelot.” Each of these familiar stories has been brought to life as innovative theatrical dance experiences. Choreographed to a fully orchestrated score, each production pushes the boundaries of classical ballet by integrating contemporary dance, aerial arts and video montages to enhance the storytelling. The magnitude of each cast, along with elaborate set and costume designs, are a feast for the eyes. Composer Allaman says, “as artists, it is our responsibility to bring something new to the table. that we connect with our audiences, collaborate with fellow artists and hopefully make lasting impressions on the community around us.” “Noah’s Ark,” presenting on May 18, 2024, at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center, will unveil once again the ancient saga of Noah and his family as they witness animals gathering two by two, survive the destruction of the great flood and discover the promise of a new tomorrow! “We’re a modern-day meat and seafood market on a mission to transform the way people shop for and eat protein.” Wild Fork’s unique blast-freezing process preserves food at the peak of freshness to seal in straight-from-thefarm flavor. Stocking the shelves with frozen foods offers many advantages, and the concept is quickly catching on with customers as more people discover Wild Fork’s offerings. Since its launch in 2018 in Florida, the outlet expanded to California in 2020, opening a Thousand Oaks location in 2022 as one of 40 nationwide sites. Read on to learn more about Wild Fork’s unique offerings.

Q. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF FREEZING FOODS? A. The advantages of frozen protein are many. By flash freezing, we can conserve the shelf life—frozen proteins will last a year and exotic proteins, like ostrich and venison, will last 2 years. As there is no waste in our processing, we are very competitive in price; on average we are about 20% cheaper than supermarkets. We’ve amassed quite a fan base of customers that love shopping with us! Buying frozen allows people to have the same variety of foods in their freezer as there are in the store—you can’t buy too much! Many customers have purchased deep freezers, so they have plenty of variety ready to go when they are, thus saving them time and trips to the store.

Q. DOES FREEZING FOOD AFFECT ITS TASTE OR NUTRITIONAL QUALITY? A. People have a misconception about frozen protein. Our blast-freezing process locks in taste, tenderness and nutritional content. In fact, we’re so confident it will be love at first bite that we have a 100% satisfaction guarantee!

Q. WHAT TYPES OF PROTEIN DOES WILD FORK SPECIALIZE IN? A. We carry over 150 different cuts of beef, rib eyes, salmon, shrimp—we have all of the major proteins. We also carry exotic proteins, such as ostrich, venison, yak and wild bison. You can find any protein you can think of in our retail stores. Simply put, Wild Fork offers the best variety of meat and seafood anywhere—we have over 700 products (including 450+ meat and seafood items!), including

everyday grocery staples to rare finds like premium Wagyu and exotic meats that’ll inspire your inner chef. We carry cuts you won’t find anywhere else, for cooks of every kind, including Black Angus, 100% grass-fed and grass-finished beef, wild caught seafood, organic and pasture-raised chicken, heritage pork breeds and more.

Q. DOES WILD FORK CARRY OTHER TYPES OF FOOD AS WELL? A. Absolutely! Customers really love our pizzas—made and frozen in Italy—and waffles from Belgium! We have everything you need to complement the main dish— appetizers, sides, seasonings, fruits, veggies, breads and desserts that pair perfectly with the proteins. When you’re hungry and in a hurry, we also offer pre-seasoned meats prepped with chef-inspired flavors alongside heat-and-eat dishes, from microwaveable single-serve meals to larger oven-ready options for the whole family.

Q. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO DEFROST THE FOOD? A. Defrosting is quicker than most people realize—the food is vacuum sealed in trays, so you just pour a little cold water on the tray, and let it sit on the countertop; depending on the size, a simple steak takes about an hour. Other foods can be cooked from frozen, such as the seasoned chicken wings. Customers really love the convenience and quality.

Q. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE QUALITY OF WILD FORK’S SELECTIONS? A. All of our products are hand selected and taste tested. We ensure they are free from phosphates, nitrates and other ingredients you can’t pronounce. We source our beef from farms in Nebraska and Colorado, where the lush grasslands produce some of the top cattle in the world. Our beef and pork is aged to perfection for the best flavor, and then we blast freeze all of our products to lock in taste and tenderness in every bite. Find out firsthand how good frozen tastes at Wild Fork’s Thousand Oaks location at 101 S. Westlake Blvd., or visit WildForkFoods.com to learn more.

Smart Money Moves for 2024 PARTNER WITH A PROFESSIONAL TO MAKE THE BEST FINANCIAL DECISIONS IN THE NEW YEAR ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI

Laura Raulinaitis

26

F IN A N CIA L BU Z Z | FIN ANCE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S

Our country’s economic climate is constantly changing. Some years are relatively stable and financially sound while others are fraught with upheaval and uncertainty. Many people find these fluctuations challenging and stressful when it comes to financial planning. It’s important to keep in mind that help is out there. Wealth advisors and certified financial planners are professionals who can help make planning for the new year and into the future both seamless and effective by taking into account their clients’ particular lifestyles, ages and goals. Laura Marie Raulinaitis, CFP®, a certified financial planner who, along with her husband Darius Raulinaitis, CFA, founded The Lake Avenue Group at Morgan Stanley in Westlake Village, are experienced professionals. “Your financial advisor is here to be your guide when you’re nervous or scared,” she says. “You call your financial advisor when you need advice, when you need handholding and when you need guidance—we are akin to financial doctors. We aim to help keep your finances healthy and keep you from making bad decisions. When it comes to making healthy decisions in your portfolio, it’s hard to do without an experienced professional.” Jennifer Strong, CFP® a wealth advisor with Montecito Bank & Trust Advisors in Westlake Village, is another such expert, and she agrees that having a financial partner is a necessity. She explains that when people try to develop financial plans on their own, they may not know what things are critical to take into account. Here are some common items she often sees missed: 1. Failing to consider life insurance or long-term care insurance when a person is young. Premiums are much more affordable the sooner one implements life insurance. 2. Failing to include emergency funds for unexpected expenses. 3. Not factoring in inflation and taxes in making projections for the future. 4. Making unrealistic investment return assumptions. When Jennifer first meets with a client, she usually begins by simply getting to know them, which is one of her favorite parts of the job. “I ask them to tell me about their work, family, lifestyle, current financial situation and habits,” she says.

“What makes them happy? How do they see themselves in retirement years—traveling, charity, hobbies? Where will they live? I ask how they feel about their current financial situation and how they envision their future. Have they set specific goals?” Once Jennifer has this information, she can work with clients to establish an appropriate, customized financial plan to target these goals. “This plan could include long- and short-term investment recommendations, estate-planning recommendations, tax considerations, life insurance, long-term care insurance and education savings strategies,” she says. “For business owners, this could include cash management, retirement plan implementation for employees, business succession planning and key man insurance.” MB&T Advisors offers complimentary consultations with wealth advisors like Jennifer, mortgage loan officers, commercial loan officers, personal bankers and business bankers. “I like the phrase ‘Jack of all trades, master of none,’” she says. “I truly value the relationship I have with my CPA, my realtor, my attorney and my hair stylist. Each of those people in my life have many years of experience and knowledge I could not possibly have and still be an expert in my own field, not to mention managing my family and personal life. “When was the last time you cut your own hair, and how did that turn out? Each of those people are part of my team of trusted advisors and I am happy to compensate them for the value they add to my life, not to mention the time saved and mistakes avoided!” As financial professionals, she and Laura have some great suggestions for 2024 that will help not only to maintain assets, but to help grow them. “Every year we should look at our financial plan or financial situation and work to make it stronger,” says Laura. “Take a good hard look at how much things cost today, including gas and groceries,” she says. “Most things are now more expensive than they were before.” When it comes to groceries, many people, she says, don’t realize that while they may be paying the same price for something in the supermarket, the size of the packaging has become smaller. “Little things like that really start adding up and I think being aware of that is important.” Something else that has changed dramatically and will still most likely be true throughout 2024 is the increased interest rate, which means CDs (Certificates of Deposit) and money markets are offering much better returns now than in the recent past. However, this increase in interest rates can affect other financial aspects in a negative fashion.

“It’s tough because the last several years we’ve had low inflation and very low interest rates and people aren’t realizing that now they can’t buy as much with the same amount of money,” she says. “For example, if they thought they could buy a million dollar house in the past, now they are realizing they can only buy an $800,000 house. Because of these higher rates, the cost of that house to the borrower is the same as a million dollar house was when interest rates were lower.” Adds Laura, “I think 2024 is the year of rebuilding of the economy, so people are pretty legitimately back to being social and traveling. We’re seeing experiences as more important to people in society today versus items, so they should expect to plan for their next experience because those are the things that seem to matter more now. When their kids are going off to college, they’re going to be visiting them on parents’ weekend. Plus, the average college student is spending more money on experiences too. They’re not so worried about their wardrobes and things like that, so it’s changing the way that we spend money and the way that we think about material items.” For those with debt, she encourages them to pay it off as quickly as possible, especially those with adjustable interest rates. “Pay down those credit cards with the highest interest rates first,” says Laura. “With these rates going up, a lot of people who may have been paying less for that credit card are now paying a lot more and it’s costing them a lot more to keep that debt. “We are at the highest credit card balances of all time. We just rolled a trillion dollars in credit card debt—that’s a really big deal.” The ever-increasing cost of health insurance and college costs are also major influences on determining a workable financial plan. When it comes to savings, she’s worried that younger people are only going to see the fluctuations in the stock market versus that 5% interest rate and have reluctance to enter the stock market, which she’s seen after recessions in the past. “I would like to encourage all people to think longer term.” Laura says it’s also necessary to realize that inflation can eat away your ability to pay for your child’s college education, to buy a house or car, manage the cost of the goods in your home and purchase other items. “That means we need to invest in things that can make up an interest rate higher than inflation because inflation is our biggest risk.” Adds Jennifer, “We experienced some anomalous conditions in 2023 to include high inflation and a fast and steady increase in interest rates. Recession was a looming concern. As a result, borrowing and spending slowed. The silver lining was that U.S. Treasury short-term rates skyrocketed

to levels that became very attractive for those with extra cash on hand. “Having said that, one can see that from year to year financial conditions change which could affect the trajectory of your financial plan. It is helpful to check in with your financial planner/advisor to ensure you are on track.” In addition, she says, life events such as marriage, babies, divorce, job/employer change, geographic relocation, inheritance, loss of a loved one, sale of a business and other changes may alter your original financial plan. “For 2024, it would be helpful to be aware of changing interest rates as this may influence a real estate decision, obtaining a loan and effect returns on short-term and longterm treasuries and bonds.” Another big change is AI, or artificial intelligence, which is also making its way into the financial sector. “AI is certainly changing the way that we will operate in this world,” says Laura. “It has been said that a robot can do my job by having you fill out a questionnaire and then giving out financial advice. That part may actually be true. “However, the part that’s not true is that robots can’t exercise compassion and try and talk you through that big down day, or week, month or year and keep you invested. They will only talk to you at a logical level. Of course, Morgan Stanley is definitely investing in AI and trying to help stay ahead of the curve in many ways.” Laura also encourages everyone to be informed on topics and to get news from more than one source and then check those sources. There is a lot of misinformation out there that may lead to making the wrong financial decisions. There are many brokers and institutions that people can turn to for financial advice, but before choosing someone to handle one’s assets and financial planning, Laura recommends going to BrokerCheck.finra.org/. “From an investment perspective, it’s more important than ever to know who you’re working with and to do your homework and then to take a long-term approach.” Laura and her team also believe in giving back and paying it forward.

“The Lake Avenue team are members of the community and we get involved,” she says. “We think that it’s important to do that because we care.” At the end of each year, to plan for the new year, they decide on which causes they wish to support. “There are a number of nonprofits that we are involved with as a team,” she says. “We decide where we want to show our support, where we want to get involved and where we want to go. We have packed boxes for the local food bank and built houses for Habitat for Humanity. We are very involved in our yacht club and so we’re raising money for the Lahaina Yacht Club that burned down during the Lahaina fires in Hawaii.” MB&T Advisors is also a key financial supporter in the local nonprofit community through generous grants and sponsorships with over $2.3 million donated in 2022. When it comes to helping others, Laura often thinks of this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself.” For more information, and to get expert advice and assistance for your financial health, go to Advisor.MorganStanley.com/ The-Lake-Avenue-Group and Montecito. SOARING SPIRITS:

CONNECTING WIDOWED PEOPLE FOR SUPPORT AND HEALING

ARTICLE BY TRACY MARCYNZSYN

36

G IV IN G BAC K | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S

Nobody asks to be a widow—and those who have experienced the death of a spouse know all too well the pain and anguish of this life-changing loss. Finding someone who can relate to these feelings can provide valuable solace and support for those who are grieving. “As an organization, our leaders have personally experienced the power of the words, ‘I get it.’ We have felt the relief of being understood by another widowed person,” writes a member of Soaring Spirits International, an organization born out of two women’s shared grief over the deaths of their husbands. Michele Neff Hernandez lost her husband to a cycling accident in 2005 and attempted to handle the crushing tragedy by seeking out other widowed people to find out how they managed to live through the death of their partners. When Hernandez met Michelle Dippel, newly widowed the same year, she soon realized the importance of having a widowed friend in processing, venting and rebuilding through this challenging experience. Their connection led to the creation of Soaring Spirits International, a nonprofit organization that has connected millions of widowed people across the world, providing them with an understanding community and support so that no widowed person has to grieve alone.

“ W E H AV E L AU G H E D, A N D C R I E D, W IT H O U R W I D O W E D C O M M U N IT Y. W E H AV E W IT N E S S E D T H E T R A N S F O R M AT I O N T H AT H AV I N G AC C E S S T O H O P E M A K E S F O R S O M E O N E W H O S E LI F E H A S B E E N A LT E R E D BY D E AT H .”

“We have laughed, and cried, with our widowed community. We have witnessed the transformation that having access to hope makes for someone whose life has been altered by death,” notes a member virtually at SoaringSpirits.org. With the goal to connect widowed people with each other, Soaring Spirits’ unique programs prove to widowed people from all walks of life that they are not alone. Life-affirming connections via virtual and in-person support groups, weekend retreats and more provide hope for widowed people in the moment and for the future. “The grief process grows you in incredible ways and it’s also hard as F--!” says Angeline Thomas, deputy director of Soaring Spirits International. “The one thing that makes it a little easier is not being alone in it. Through programs like our regional support groups and Camp Widow, people go from saying, ‘I feel completely alone; nobody understands’ to ‘I found my people, my experience has been validated and I have hope for the future.’ And you never have to graduate. It’s a lifelong community that you decide whether or not to engage in—we’re here for the long haul.” Soaring Spirits is an inclusive, secular organization that welcomes any widowed person regardless of marital status, age, gender, nationality, sexual orientation or religious affiliation to participate in virtual and in-person programs.

Soaring Spirits has information, resources and a community of understanding for those at any point in their widowhood, whether the loss was recent or many years ago; and virtual and local in-person regional groups to help widowed people rebuild their social network. All these resources are available online at widowedvillage.org. “The first year is among the most stressful and most difficult,” says Thomas. “Really having a consistent base of other people as a support network builds camaraderie and resilience. In-person groups meet twice a month to do something like go on a hike; support and friendships build around that. For those navigating the first year of loss, the newly widowed call meets online every Tuesday on Zoom and people from all over the world join.” To find information about a regional group in the area, or to access the newly widowed call, visit widowedvillage.org to join for free. “One of our core commitments is to keep our community safe, so we ask that every person that comes to us goes through a registration process to verify their widow experience with a death certificate, obituary or a social media post,” notes Thomas. Soaring Spirits’ Widowed Village has tons of other resources too. It’s an online 24/7 community offering a place to write, read and share thoughts CONTINUED >

with other widowed people. It houses the Widow’s Voice Blog, the largest library in the world of blogs written by widowed people about love, grief and life after the death of a partner; Widowed Pen Pals, providing an opportunity to connect with another widowed person by email; and Newly Widowed Packets, offering quick, easy ways to connect a widowed person with the Soaring Spirits community. Soaring Spirits’ signature program is Camp Widow, a weekend retreat planned by widowed people for widowed people where participants share an uplifting, life-affirming experience that builds invaluable community, resilience and healing. Soaring Spirits is raising R&D funds to launch a groundbreaking Public Health Initiative in 2025 to change the way the public supports widowed people through coordinated partnerships, customized training and resource deployment. “We want to act as a force for good for widowed people,” says Thomas. “When their life is turned upside down and smashed into a million pieces, we want grief-literate EMTS, doctors, nurses, police, and other support people to catch them in a web of support.”

We want to scale programs to help as many people as possible,” Thomas notes. “The hurdle is to have the funding to scale what we know already works.” Learn more at SoaringSpirits.org.

Carden Conejo Educates Students to Shine Exceptional educational options are a hallmark in the Conejo Valley. Finding the perfect school to nurture elementary school age students provides a solid foundation for their future endeavors. At Carden Conejo in Westlake Village, educators aim to help students thrive and embrace learning.

Q: HOW DOES CARDEN CONEJO DISTINGUISH ITSELF FROM OTHER SCHOOLS? A: Carden Conejo is a school like no other. Inspired by the visionary Mae Carden, who recognized the importance of rigorous academics, public speaking, character development (manners and morals), the fine arts and problem-solving abilities as early as the 1930s, Carden offers an exceptional educational experience. Our elementary school offers small class sizes and specialist teachers in each subject. We operate much like a high school with specialist teachers in Language Arts/Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, Computer

Studies and Technology, Music, Art and Art Appreciation, Foreign Language (French), and daily Sports classes. The school community directly affects learning. Carden has cultivated a staff that is especially warm, supportive and professional. Parents are an integral part of the Carden community. We encourage open communication and work together to support student achievement. Carden students gain confidence as they tackle challenging work, knowing they have an entire community behind them. Carden awakens both the analytical and creative aspects of the brain, nurturing balanced growth from preschool through fifth grade. The curriculum is designed so that each grade builds upon the strengths acquired in the previous year, ensuring a path of steady progress. Academic support is offered to kindergarten through fifth grade students who require additional support. This

consists of 30 minutes of free one-toone or small group tutoring after school with our teachers.

Q: HOW DOES THE CURRICULUM AT CARDEN PREPARE STUDENTS FOR THE CHALLENGES OF THE FUTURE? A: Carden teaches students how to think, meet a challenge, work positively and relate well to others. A focus on language arts cultivates in-depth reading and writing skills essential for effective communication. Foss Science promotes hands-on, inquiry-based learning and enhances critical thinking. At Carden, we have the privilege of unique partnerships, such as Disney Code Illusions and LEGO Engineering, which introduce students to the exciting world of coding, technology and hands-on engineering. Students develop problem-solving skills throughout the day that will equip them for future challenges.

Our curriculum places character development at its core, instilling manners and morals like kindness, empathy, integrity and personal responsibility, which are essential for cultivating future leaders. Engaging in class plays enhances creativity, teamwork and self-expression, while weekly assemblies promote public speaking, confidence and a strong sense of community.

Q: HOW DOES CARDEN INTEGRATE TECHNOLOGY INTO THE CLASSROOM AND LEARNING EXPERIENCE? A: We've thoughtfully integrated technology into our students' education. Our computer lab features 20 advanced Dell computers, allowing exploration of the digital landscape. Starting in Kindergarten, students engage in weekly tech sessions, mastering essential skills. We are excited to introduce two new computer science curriculums, Disney Code Illusions, and Lego's Coding Express, that will bring extra excitement to tech exploration. SMART Board technology, including specialized Math and Science Labs, is incorporated in every classroom, enhancing interactive learning. Chromebooks and tablets offer diverse programs, including Rosetta Stone, for language learning and creative expression. Our goal is to support your children in a tech-driven world. We use technology with intention and for the purpose of obtaining specific educational goals, not as a tool to fill time.

Q: HOW DOES CARDEN NURTURE COMMUNITY AMONG STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND PARENTS? A: At Carden, fostering a tight-knit community is at the heart of what we do. We provide students, teachers and parents opportunities to unite, interact, collaborate and build meaningful connections. This commitment is demonstrated through school events like Fall Festival, Movie and Magic Nights, community service, performances, schoolwide playdates and weekly assemblies.

Q: HOW DOES CARDEN ENRICH STUDENT EXPERIENCES OUTSIDE THE REGULAR CURRICULUM? A: We're all about nurturing every aspect of your child's growth at Carden. In addition to our core academic programs, we've created a wonderful world of afterschool enrichment classes. These include the Performing Arts Club, the French Club, Arts and Crafts, Spanish lessons, Science explorations, LEGO building class, Edible Art Class and Karate. We also foster community engagement through initiatives like Community Service, our fifth grade Kinder Buddies program, and organize various exciting field trips throughout the year. We aim to ensure every child can explore their interests and have a well-rounded experience. It's all about helping them shine in various ways.

Q: HOW CAN PROSPECTIVE PARENTS AND STUDENTS LEARN MORE OR VISIT CARDEN? A: We would love to tell you more about our special school! Celebrating Life: A Tribute to My Dad

ARTICLE BY KIM PAGANO In the midst of grief, I find solace in celebrating a life well-lived, that of my beloved dad. As I reflect on the precious moments I shared with him, I am reminded of the importance of cherishing life and holding our priorities close to our hearts. Life in itself is unpredictable and often fleeting in nature; it serves as a poignant meaning of sadness or regret. This is a reminder of its inherent value. It’s in the ordinary moments that we discover the extraordinary beauty of existence. My dad was a living testament to this truth. He taught me that the simple life’s truest essence lies not in grandiose achievements or material possessions, but in love, laughter and shared experiences with the people who matter most.

Growing up, my dad and mom instilled in me the significance of treasuring each day. They showed me the joy that comes from nurturing relationships and building memories that last a lifetime. We always celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and even the smallest victories because we understood that life was too short not to. My mom’s beautiful, loving heart alongside my dad’s unwavering support made these celebrations memorable and meaningful. Now, with my dad’s passing, I am confronted with a profound sense of gratitude for having had the privilege of celebrating their lives as their daughter. We often laughed together, shared stories and, above all, loved without reservation. Those moments, now etched in my heart, are a testament to a life well-celebrated.

“Don’t wait until it’s too late to express your love, gratitude and appreciation to the people who hold a special place in your hear t.”

“It’s in the ordinar y moments that we discover the ex traordinar y beaut y of existence.”

In the wake of this loss, I can’t help but reflect on the importance of keeping our priorities straight. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life and work, often neglecting the very people who bring us the most joy. We may find ourselves chasing success, wealth and recognition, all the while forgetting that it’s the bonds we forge and nurture that truly define our existence. My dad’s passing serves as a poignant reminder that life is precious, and every moment should be cherished. Don’t wait until it’s too late to express your love, gratitude and appreciation to the people who hold a special place in your heart. Our time on this Earth is limited, and it’s only when we look back that we realize the importance of having our priorities straight. So, let us celebrate life, not just on special occasions, but every day. Let us embrace our loved ones and let them know how much they mean to us. In doing so, we honor the legacy of those who have passed and ensure that we live a life worthy of celebration. In memory of my dad, and with a heart filled with gratitude, I invite you to reflect on your own life and the people who matter most to you. Don’t wait for a loss to remind you of life’s preciousness. Celebrate it now, and let your priorities reflect the love and joy that truly matter. My dad taught me many lessons, but the biggest lesson was that family is everything. Count your blessings my friends!

Giving Campaign

2023 50

O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE

“

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
