Our Community Schools Are a Blessing Our community is blessed with the opportunity to provide our children with a quality education. In this issue we feature an overview of the many educational offerings, including public and private schools, in our community. School is back in person as we continue to emerge from the challenges presented by the pandemic. The challenges are huge. The threat of illness presented obstacles for in-person learning, and remote schooling proved extremely difficult for many students. Serious emotional health fallout also resulted from the isolation forced on adolescents during a time in their lives when they would otherwise have been spreading their wings socially and preparing for adulthood. Some 3,000 miles from here, in Pennsylvania, my granddaughters endured three instances of tragedy brought on by emotional displacement amongst their classmates. We addressed emotional wellbeing in the October 2021 issue of CVL (view it online at CityLifestyle.com/ConejoValley). School-age children have been especially affected, as have working parents who have juggled their work schedules with monitoring their children’s education—with so many distractions, it’s understandable to wonder if the kids are really doing their schoolwork at home or just goofing off? Thankfully, our schools are quite outstanding. During the past two years administrators and teachers have navigated unique and unexpected challenges, professionally and emotionally, with poise and grace. Whether you have kids of your own, grandchildren or are simply a member of the community, you can be confident our future is in good hands. Our community’s schools are rich in academic and cultural content that is being passed down to future generations. Whether they become businesspeople, educators, artists, health and wellness practitioners, or butchers, bakers and candlestick makers, we can be sure a firm foundation is being built.

Select one who will represent your interests through the entire process. As the Real Estate market proves to be a bit more challenging, it is more important than ever to choose the right Realtor to represent the offering of your home. Advertising is what keeps a realtor on the forefront of his or her market. Moreover, having a budget for advertising, shows they are producing and are true career real estate professionals. If you are selling your home, you need an agent who believes in marketing and exposure. When interviewing a Realtor, ask to see examples of their advertising – look at the magazines. Do you see their ads? Are they large ads for each home, or a small ad with many other homes? Are they planning to list your home simply place it in MLS and on Facebook and Instagram and have buyers flock to your home or are they willing to invest in a targeted marketing campaign with wide full media exposure? Staging services? 1. Ask the agent how much they spend on advertising and ask for a full list. Advertising costs vary widely by area, but agents should consistently spend a portion of their business expenses on advertising. 2. Check out the local housing market in person. Drive or walk around your neighborhood and look for repeat agent names on real estate signs (bonus if there’s a “sold” ...) 3. Compare real estate agents online. Do a quick name search online for the real estate agents you’ve identified. ...Check out their ratings on Zillow. 4. Get a referral. There’s nothing better than a personal referral from a friend or family member you trust. Finally, don’t assume the most inexpensive agent is the one for you. If the agent can’t even negotiate to protect their own money, how likely do you think it will be for them to go to bat to protect your money?” As one of the country’s most successful Realtors, Rosemary has set the standard for excellence throughout her career and is truly a legend. CONEJO VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT The Conejo Valley Unified School District, located in Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park and Westlake Village, is proud to provide exceptional academic experiences to children in Transitional Kindergarten through Grade 12, preschool and postsecondary. “In the CVUSD, we feature beautiful campuses and provide welcoming learning environments that support the success of all students,” says Kimberly Gold, Coordinator of Communications, Community Engagement and Marketing. “From our youngest scholars to our eldest, we boast a variety of unique academic programs for students to learn invaluable skills and follow their passions,” says Gold, adding that this includes the launch of a new Spanish-English Dual Language Immersion program at Conejo Elementary School. “This school year, we will welcome our first classes of transitional kindergarten and kindergarten Dual Language Immersion learners who will begin their journey of becoming bilingual, biliterate and bicultural,” Gold explains. This school year the CVUSD also begins the first year of its Strategic Arts Plan, which aims to provide equitable access to the arts for all students by reducing barriers and creating pathways for the continuance of arts studies and more. “The CVUSD is currently the only school district in Ventura County to have such a plan, which displays true commitment to all of our students having free access to the arts throughout their TK-12 educational careers,” Gold says. “We believe that equitable access to a well-rounded arts education, inclusive of music, visual arts, theater, media arts and more, will give every student the opportunity to access creativity and innovation, connect to self and others, and develop a deep sense of well-being and authentic academic success.” In related efforts, “we continue to prepare students for achieving the future career of their dreams,” Gold notes. For instance, the district’s secondary schools offer a variety of Career Pathways Programs from Culinary Arts to Information & Communication Technologies, to Entrepreneurship, to Arts, Media & Entertainment and much more, all of which afford students the opportunity to study areas of interest to them prior to graduation day. “These programs guide students as they form essential career connections and can act as a gateway to employment,” says Gold, adding that families are encouraged to explore these unique course offerings and opportunities at ConejoCTE.org. “Lastly, our school campuses continue to be upgraded, thanks to the voter-approved school facilities bond, Measure I,” Gold says. “Last school year, we cut the ribbon on a brand new, 27,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art STEM Building at Westlake High School.” The STEM building allows teachers and students to continue to expand upon the great tradition of science excellence at Westlake High School with the incorporation of technology, more diverse labs/activities, and the utilization of outdoor learning spaces to enhance educational experiences through connection with the environment. Thanks to Measure I, there will also be many more exciting upgrades and new additions ahead for our schools, such as new ADA-accessible

play areas at elementary school sites, a hands-on, outdoor learning classroom at Cypress Elementary and building modernizations completed at several sites, including Los Cerritos Middle School and Sequoia Middle School. “These projects will be invaluable additions to our campuses, support our students on their educational journeys and boost the pride our whole community feels when they step foot on our beautiful campuses,” Gold says. “The future is bright for the Conejo Valley Unified School District, as we continue to adapt and innovate to best serve our community of learners,” Gold added. “Families interested in learning more about the CVUSD’s unique academic offerings and enrollment opportunities are encouraged to visit EnrollCVUSD.com.” For more information, visit ConejoUSD.org or call 805.497.9511.

La Reina High and Middle School offers a unique opportunity for young girls in Grades 6 through 12 to grow in an environment where there is a clear vision for her future through high school and beyond. “Part of this vision involves the promotion of thoughtfully developed outcomes for each student grounded in the Educational Vision and Principles of the Sisters of Notre Dame,” says Maggie Marschner, Principal. La Reina seeks to develop each and every girl as a unique individual. “Throughout their time at La Reina, students will foster their relationship with God, grow intellectually, develop their individual gifts and contribute to the community,” says Marschner, adding that educators engage in their work every day with these principles in mind. This strong foundation is holistic in nature—focusing not just on academics but on the growth and development of the whole student. “Our educators do this by devoting time to proactively planning their lessons with their students' social, academic and spiritual development in mind,” says Marschner. “Their lessons are inclusive in nature, building on the talents each student brings with them.” La Reina’s Middle School Student Life program is also grounded in the principles of the Sisters of Notre Dame, where each girl is given opportunities for growth within a system of support. “By focusing on a strong foundation and holistic development, every young girl at La Reina has an opportunity to explore and grow her talents, her spirituality and her love of learning,” Marschner notes. For the young women entering La Reina High School, each of the four years is designed to provide the opportunity and access to strengthen and grow the innate gifts that God gave them. “For some girls, this may mean trying out a new sport, attending a book club during the lunch hour, staying up late to work on her design for robotics, joining Student Christian Life or growing her love of languages,” explains Marschner, adding that students are able to explore their talents in a rich academic environment where they are consistently challenged and provided access to rigorous content. La Reina offers many exciting cocurricular opportunities, such as Mock Trial, Speech & Debate, and Robotics. The Athletic Department also offers a variety of opportunities for girls looking to either enter into a new sport or strengthen and grow their existing athletic skills. “However, as our student life model grows, continuing to cultivate student voice and leadership opportunities, we have found that student government has become one of the most popular offerings at La Reina,” Marschner says. “Our student life model seeks to define and grow student voice.
Young women at La Reina have opportunities to be a part of positive change and progress as well as grow in their understanding of leadership and support those in need in our community.” In today’s times of uncertainty and constant change, La Reina has adjusted to the pandemic “by listening to our students, partnering with our parents and growing together in community,” Marschner emphasized. “Families know better than anyone the impact of the pandemic,” she says. “We have taken the time to listen to them, not only in conversation but in structured dialogue and feedback surveys.” It is through this partnership and dialogue that La Reina leadership and educators have made thoughtful improvements to curriculum, continuing to focus on learning and the well-being of each student. “We have continued to grow in our understanding of Universal Design for Learning, a pedagogical design focused on meeting the needs of all students,” Marschner adds. “It is our belief that through partnership with our parents and by engaging in a proactive holistic approach to learning, the young women of La Reina will thrive.” For more information, visit LaReina.com or call 805.495.6494.

OAKS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL Oaks Christian School is a vibrant, dynamic learning community where each student is inspired and encouraged to discover their God-given gifts, talents and passions. “We look forward to having you visit our beautiful campus and engage with our incredible students and our gifted, dedicated faculty,” says Head of School Robert T. Black. “This is a unique place, and my hope is that as you visit in person or peruse our website you will get a sense of the OCS family.”
When Black joined the school in January 2015, he discovered a school that had experienced an incredibly strong growth trajectory since its launch in 2000. “The amazing accomplishments of the students, an incredible world-class facility and a highly dedicated faculty, staff and parent community committed to impacting student lives is truly inspiring,” he says. “As we look ahead to our future, we are committed to continuing to reinvest and focus on remaining one of the top independent, college-preparatory schools in the nation.” The OCS mission is focused on three major tenets: Academic Excellence, Artistic Expression and Athletic Distinction. “We have an outstanding arts program that represents the heart and soul of the school, and a highly successful athletic program that develops and builds character in the lives of our athletes,” Black says. For instance, the Institute of Arts and Innovation provides high school students with individualized learning pathways in the performing and visual arts, focusing on the relationship between their disciplines and the arts and entertainment industry. Courses in visual and performing arts include ceramics, 3-D sculpture, photography, graphic design, film, drawing, painting, dance, theatre, band, choir, digital recording, guitar and orchestra. When it comes to athletics, OCS offers state-of-the-art modern venues that provide student-athletes with resources and opportunities to hone their skills, with facilities including the softball fields, tennis courts, weight room, aquatic center and track. OCS also offers numerous clubs and activities, including an art club, beach and volleyball club, Bible club, business and investment club, ECO club, equestrian club, Fear Factor club and journalism club. There’s also a libraries center, as well as leadership opportunities and a wellness program. OCS is also home to a chapel that provides age-appropriate programming for each school, as well as community service programs that include partnering with the James Storehouse Foundation, which serves foster children in the Conejo Valley. Additionally, OCS offers social and emotional wellness counselors and spiritual life directors. “We have a vibrant campus community that is committed to educating the ‘whole child’ and who puts the student first,” Black says. “We offer students a rigorous curriculum, delivered by a highly engaged faculty coupled with small classes, that delivers a highly successful record of placement into many of the finest colleges and universities in the country, and throughout the world.” Oaks Christian School welcomes students of all faiths and backgrounds regardless of their personal religious beliefs. “As a Christian school, we offer all students an opportunity to embrace and further develop their relationship with God, or to explore the Christian faith and learn more about the richness of its offerings,” Black adds. “We encourage you to learn more about all the many opportunities that Oaks Christian School has to offer, and we can’t wait to welcome you to our campus.” For more information, visit OaksChristian.org or call 818.575.9900. OAK PARK UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT The mission of the Oak Park Unified School District is to provide students with a strong foundation for learning which meets the challenge of the present and future through a balanced education that includes academic achievement, personal growth and social responsibility. The district, which consists of seven K-12 public schools in the community of Oak Park, was formed in 1977 when residents voted to create a new school district to better meet the needs of its residents, beginning a long tradition of placing the highest priority toward ensuring a high quality education. Today, all of the district's schools are California Gold Ribbon schools and have been nationally recognized as Blue Ribbon schools. Additionally, the district has been recognized as a national Green Ribbon school district for its focus on environmentally progressive policies and practices. Notable programs include the two-year Discovery Kindergarten that exposes students to kindergarten standards and curriculum—but at a different pace—in which they are introduced to the curriculum but not expected to master it and have the opportunity to learn and practice important social and communication skills. ONE SPARK ACADEMY One Spark Academy was founded in July 2011 as an exploratory learning center for middle school age students who are homeschooled or on independent study, and who desire a flexible, individualized and focused learning environment. They serve students in Grades 6 through 8 and some classes are appropriate for high school students. Students attend One Spark Academy for academic and enrichment courses, as well as its social and emotional focus. Beyond offering some unique courses not found elsewhere (like Food Fascination, Viewpoint, BioMimicry, Mapping the World and Seeds & Sprouts), their small-sized classes offer more personalized attention than students might get in a larger school. In December 2021, One Spark Academy moved its location from the Thousand Oaks Teen Center (currently undergoing a renovation) to the Conejo YMCA, which recently closed. OSA uses the outdoor pavilions and play areas, and the outdoor amphitheater overlooking the Santa Rosa Valley. They will be operating out of this beautiful campus for the coming year. Beside the YMCA, One Spark Academy also has an outdoor classroom at the Las Flores Community Garden, where it holds its Seeds & Sprouts gardening class. Their academic year begins on August 22. Sport Psychology: KEEPING STUDENT-ATHLETES AT THE TOP OF THEIR GAME ARTICLE BY CARRIE HASTINGS, PSYD
For many students, back to school means back to sports! Athletes look forward to competing as the fall sport schedules are released. In addition to eager anticipation, student-athletes may find themselves feeing anxious about what lies ahead. Will I accomplish my goals? Will I stay healthy? Will I be able to balance the dynamics of school, sports and relationships? Athletes may need extra guidance as they navigate the pressures of a new season. They may also want to build upon their strengths and enhance mental performance. At Sport Psychology, we are happy to help support the mindset and mental health of all student-athletes as they begin a new academic year. One suggestion for transitioning from summer break to the academic year is establishing goals. Athletes should break down long-term goals into mini goals for each day, practice and game. By making one’s objectives both sport-related and non-sport-related, athletes are reminded that their overall identity is greater than their sport. They can serve important roles on their team, in their family and within the community. The mental aspect of sports is not always prioritized by athletes or coaches. Additionally, athletes don’t always have the tools to enhance their mental performance. Tactics such as relaxation techniques, imagery, mindfulness and healthy self-talk can make the difference between a good performance and a great one. Athletes who are in emotional distress typically show a noticeable shift in their persona. Many exhibit withdrawal, isolation, sudden outbursts, difficulty wi th tr ansitions or si gnificant cha nges in eat ing and sle eping patterns. They may seem apathetic about sport participation when they used to be passionate. When such behaviors are observed or reported, it’s time to seek extra support. Be especially vigilant for warning signs of suicidality. These may include a preoccupation with death or dying, a belief that one is a burden to others and that the world would be better without him or her. If there is a plan in place, the individual has the means and suicide is potentially imminent, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800.273.8255 or dial 911. With all of the money spent on athletic programs, there remains significantly less funding, if any, for athlete-centered mental health resources. Meanwhile, many elite athletes consider their “mental fitness” a s p art of their training regimen. They value having a regular space and time for themselves. Should there be bumps along the road, the relationship with a trusted professional is already in place. Remember, you don’t have to wait until something is wrong to develop a relationship with a mental health clinician and strengthen the relationship with yourself. Two Special Teachers Make the Grade
What does it take for an educator to be named Teacher of the Year? For Beth Bowers and Shannon Klemann, it’s about doing what they love while giving the next generation the skills, mindset and compassion they will need to be productive adults in a rapidly changing world.
BETH BOWERS After a career in banking and becoming the mother of a son with Down syndrome, Beth Bowers joined the Ventura County Office of Education in 2012 as a paraeducator providing classroom support to teachers and students.

BETH BOWERS
She was so inspired by the work that she went back to school to earn her bachelor’s degree and teaching credential, “and graduated when I was 55,” said the Santa Rosa Valley resident. She’s been a special education teacher for nearly six years and now works with 6th to 8th grade students who have moderate to severe disabilities at Las Colinas Middle School in Camarillo. “Beth is an incredible teacher who is committed to improving her students’ learning outcomes in every area,” says Rob Scheerger, principal of Las Colinas Middle School. “Her lessons exhibit creativity and ingenuity. She has specialized skills that help her work well with challenging students. She has cultivated a deep connection and commitment to her school site and the community, which thereby facilitates her students’ ability to thrive.” Beth’s dedication earned her the 2022 Teacher of the Year award for schools operated by the Ventura County Office of Education—VCOE. Beth found out she was being honored in late April when her family and friends, Principal Scheerger, and Ventura County Superintendent of Schools Dr. César Morales made a surprise visit to her classroom. Also on hand to break the good news were VCOE Associate Superintendent of Student Services Dr. Consuelo Hernandez Williams, VCOE Associate Superintendent of Educational Services Lisa Salas Brown, and VCOE Executive Director of Special Education Holly Minear. “Winning Teacher of the Year has been an incredible honor,” Beth says. “I have my sons' prior teachers and the incredible mentors to thank for my success. I am riding on their coattails.” Born and raised in Ohio, Beth came to California in 1980. “My son was educated in the county program,” she recalls. “I was grateful for what VCOE did for my son and I wanted to give back. I desired to be a special education teacher, specifically for VCOE.” Unlike other programs, “VCOE has a ‘push in’ model that meets our student therapeutic needs right in the classroom,” she explains. “Teachers and paraeducators are given direction and training from specialists to implement strategies to meet students' needs throughout the school day.” Beth’s greatest reward “is seeing student success.” “When you watch a student try and try and then you experience the moment when they got it—it gives me chills,” she emphasizes. “I really want everything I teach to have relevance. I think about their future and the skills I can begin working on now in middle school that will help them be successful adults. It is a joyful journey.” One of Beth’s many innovative initiatives involves creating interactions between students who have disabilities and those who don’t. Through her Peer Tutoring program, general education students from

Las Colinas visit her classroom to work with her students. Students from both groups end up discovering they have more in common than they realized. “Beth Bowers exemplifies the incredible impact that a teacher can have,” says Dr. Morales. “She builds meaningful relationships with her students, their family members and her coworkers to maximize opportunities for growth and learning. We are truly fortunate to have her as part of the VCOE family.” Beth noted that she started a tradition during her first year of teaching. “Each year I purchase a birdhouse for a tree just outside my kitchen window. Students sign and write messages on the birdhouse. Then they are sealed so the writing stays.” This year, she will be adding birdhouse number six. “Whenever I look out that kitchen window, I see the birdhouses and smile because I am reminded of how blessed I am to have had these special learners in my life.”
SHANNON KLEMANN A veteran educator who has taught in Oxnard Union High School District schools for 23 years, Shannon Klemann from Adolfo Camarillo High School has been named the 2022 Ventura County Teacher of the Year. “Coming from a family of teachers—my husband, his parents, and my daughter now at Berkeley studying to be a biology teacher—I accept this honor on behalf of all teachers who are, in general, a hard-working group of people that put a ton of heart into their profession,” Shannon says. “I am proud to be chosen to represent my colleagues.” She currently teaches biology in Grades 9 through 12 at Adolfo Camarillo High School, where her Principal, Matt La Belle, said she showed extraordinary initiative in keeping her students engaged with learning when classrooms were closed due to the pandemic. She kept her hands-on curriculum relevant by conducting labs over video, having students submit data on their experiments in real-time, and encouraging students to interact with text chat if they were hesitant to participate on camera. Principal La Belle says Shannon’s dedication to teaching is clear the moment you step into her classroom. “Entering Mrs. Klemann’s classroom is like entering a hands-on science museum,” he says. “After walking past the bright orange nasturtiums blossoming from the compost box that sits near the entrance of her room, where earthworms happily munch on banana peels, carrots and old recycled books, students are welcomed into a world of biology…Mrs. Klemann’s students are surrounded by and engaged in biology all period, all week, all year.”

Looking back on her life as a teacher so far, “I am proud that students who have passed through my life can make connections that are important in their transformation into mature, responsible citizens who contribute positively to our society,” Shannon says. “I suppose this is more of a hope than an accomplishment, but in 23 years, I have seen evidence this is true. I have had students contact me and let me know the amazing things they are doing in the world. Sometimes I run into them around town and get to see, firsthand, their accomplishments.” Her desire to become a teacher was inspired by “some amazing teachers in high school.” One of them was her biology teacher and another was a humanities teacher, who “definitely inspired me,” however, “I did not set out to be a teacher.” It was her passion for the environment and marine biology that “shaped the educator in me.” She set out to study biology from the beginning, but halfway through studying at Cal Poly, she became involved in outdoor education, teaching in a county outdoor school, instructing for a travelling sea school—and even doing six months in the Florida Keys, teaching marine biology. “I found that I absolutely loved taking something I had a passion for—biology and the environment—and transferring that passion to my students,” Shannon says. “I guess you could say that I have been inspired by nature in addition to some key teachers in my life. After 23 years, I still love my career. I love creating opportunities for students to explore science.” As she plans her lessons, Shannon is always looking for ways to make storylines—particularly local ones about Channel Islands National Park—come alive. “I get the opportunity to visit the Channel Islands each year with my students,” she says. “There is nothing more rewarding than watching students as they witness the wildlife of our national park firsthand.” As she coaches students through the exploration opportunities she sets before them, “I have the honor of watching them discover moments of understanding. These lightbulb moments are one of my favorite parts of teaching.” Shannon’s greatest hope for students is that “they go out into the world and contribute in a positive way to society and that whatever they endeavor to do, they keep in mind human and environmental costs.” “Whether they become people of business, medicine, law, agriculture, industry, trade or education, they do so with a conscience,” she adds. “I want my students to live, travel, learn, help and simply be good people that are able to look back on their lives and find reward in their careers as I have been fortunate enough to do.”

HONORING THOSE WHO INSPIRE STUDENTS TO LEARN AND THRIVE Twelve Ventura County teachers recently received $16,000 in grants for their unique, innovative lesson plans that have been classroom-tested and kid-approved. Via a partnership between IMPACT II, a curriculum-sharing and recognition program for K-12 educators, and the Ventura County Office of Education, teachers received funds to implement their special programs. “IMPACT II boosts teacher morale by recognizing innovative teaching,” says Andrea Rubin, VCOE’s student competitions coordinator. “Recognizing innovative teachers at the awards dinner is an opportunity to celebrate the true heroes and heroines in our communities.” In order to be chosen to receive these grants and be recognized for their talents, teachers submit interesting and engaging lesson plans that cover a wide variety of subject matters, including social sciences, history and language arts. “It's always an honor winning the Impact II grant,” says Ventura Charter School teacher, Holly Johnson, who’s been teaching kindergarten for eight years. “I'm so inspired by other educators that win this grant. The projects they create are ones I wish I could have done had I been their student!” Olivia Hernandez, at Hueneme High School is another grant recipient. “It was a humbling experience to be recognized alongside my partner teacher, Rachael Ball. A lot of work went into these lesson plans. It was also our first time teaching the novel, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, so it felt reassuring that we were doing something right.” After 24 years of teaching and winning this award 14 times, Jennifer Dobbie says it never stops being an amazing honor. “We joke that it’s like the Oscars for teaching,” she says. In addition to recognizing teacher excellence, IMPACT II aims to share these innovative lesson plans with other teachers. “IMPACT II puts cutting-edge classroom projects into the mainstream, turning students on to learning,” says Andrea. “It enables excellent teaching ideas to reach all teachers in the county and raises community awareness of exemplary classroom practices.” These lesson plans are not only used by local teachers but are made available to educators throughout the country and beyond. “I strive to develop projects and lessons that are authentic and joyful, while challenging our youngest learners to grow in ways they may not have realized they could,” says Holly. “I think projects that are purposeful and have a connection to service in the community are ones that make a lasting impact on students. Too often our children are robbed of play and opportunities that nourish their
curiosity—both very innate human traits. I feel that it is important for educators to find ways to bring this joy into our classrooms so that our students can thrive.” Jennifer adds, “Creating engaging lessons is key to being a successful teacher; where students not only learn but become lifelong engaged learners who go on to become interactive members of society. I teach middle school, so it’s doubly challenging to engage them, especially now having to compete with social media. If teachers don’t create an exciting learning environment, students will be less likely to reach their own goals and may have a negative view of school and not look at learning as a lifelong goal.” Since its inception, IMPACT II has grown tremendously as teachers, business leaders and administrators have become aware of the program. To date, grants have totaled almost $400,000, which are awarded in amounts of $1,000 for individual teachers and $2,000 for teams. Sponsors including Amgen Foundation, NAVSEA, SAGE Publications, Inc., and STS Education supply grant funds. “Teachers are encouraged to utilize grant money to pay for classroom supplies and materials to implement their lesson plans in the classroom,” says Andrea.

Kristin Bell: Igniting Local Entrepreneurs Helping entrepreneurs turn their lightbulb ideas into a bright light in the world inspires Entrepreneurship Educator Kristin Bell, who works with hundreds of students each year at Oaks Christian School and Cal Lutheran University. “It’s incredibly inspiring to work with entrepreneurs and see their grit and determination, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to play a role in their journeys,” says Kristin, who mentors students at various stages on their journey to entrepreneurship. “Sometimes, I meet with entrepreneurs who are on fire and excited about their idea, and their energy is electric and infectious. And other times, I meet with entrepreneurs who are stuck, defeated and pretty burnt out; and then there will be a moment in the program where something clicks, and I see their eyes light up and witness that fire reigniting. It’s such a joy to see them complete their programs having made significant progress not only on their startups, but also on their mindsets and problem-solving skills,” says Kristin, noting the “two-way learning” that takes place. “As an instructor, my goal is for students to learn; however, the best part of my job is that I’m constantly learning from my students—which is also probably the most challenging aspect,” she says. “In any program, I could be working with an entrepreneur looking to power renewable energy with lithium-ion batteries, another developing a social platform for women over 50 and another tackling crypto self-custody. There’s never a dull or boring moment!” In her roles as entrepreneurship educator at Oaks Christian School's Institute of Engineering, mentor to startups at Cal Lutheran University’s Executive MBA Program in Europe and program manager at Cal Lu’s Hub101, a coworking space and start-up incubator for entrepreneurs, Kristin aims to help the community flourish. “I have a deep passion for innovation and entrepreneurship, including working with startups, investors, mentors, organizations and other integral parts. I want to continue to create and implement educational programs that

nourish the local start-up community and help entrepreneurs develop their ideas,” says Kristin. She encourages entrepreneurs to have the courage to take action, even when they don’t have all the answers. “Be confident in your strengths, and never stop learning,” she says. “Don’t be intimidated by the things you don’t know, but rather feel encouraged by the opportunity to do things you haven’t yet done and excited by the opportunity to learn.” As an educator, she enjoys helping entrepreneurs succeed. “My goal is to contribute to the development of a robust start-up community in the Conejo Valley that is driven by collaboration, entrepreneurial thinking, exceptional talent and innovative technologies. It is incredibly exciting and rewarding being a part of a community that is making a significant impact in our world,” she says. Pointing to the value of connecting with community, Kristin advises entrepreneurs to nurture their relationships. “Your network is valuable; cultivate it, don’t underestimate it,” she says. “Consider a seed being sowed every time you meet someone, and that seed can blossom into something fruitful at any point. I’ve had connections grow from brief interactions into mentors, community members, students, business partners and other significant relationships.” With a can-do mindset and a quality education, anyone can become a successful entrepreneur, says Kristin. “We often hear the same handful of entrepreneurs’ names in the media: the likes of Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates … There is so much more to entrepreneurship than what we hear in the media—it’s crucial for entrepreneurs to have role models with relevant experiences, to be able to look at these success stories and think to themselves, ‘If they can do it, I can do it too.’” To learn more about student entrepreneurship programs, visit OaksChristian.org and Hub101.org.

THE RAMINFARD SCHOOL OF ARTS ARTICLE BY TRACY MARCYNZSYN
PAINT YOUR MASTERPIECE
Conejo Valley budding artists will be excited to discover a new resource in town with the recent opening of The Raminfard School of Arts in Agoura Hills. Founded in 2000 in West Hollywood by renowned artist Daniel Raminfard, The Raminfard School of Arts provides high quality art instruction to students of all ages and abilities. “I love that I can share my passion,” says Daniel, who began his artist’s journey early on—"my parents said by age 3 or 4 I was in love with art, pictures in books and all types of drawings.” Honing his skills for many years under the talented Iranian artist Hooshang Peyman, Daniel became a celebrated master painter, winning multiple awards, most notably from the Portrait Society of America and the prestigious California Art Club, and selling his portraits, landscapes and still life series to private international collections and for print, TV and film spots. Originally starting his art school in his father’s garage, Daniel grew his business into a successful studio, teaching art to hundreds of students, including celebrities, through the years. “My own personal life mission is to enrich people’s lives through drawing and painting,” he says. “That’s what I wake up to do—help someone to create art they love.” Here, Daniel shares more about The Raminfard School of Arts. Q. What type of art do you teach at The Raminfard School of Arts? A. We offer private and group classes to students (ages 10 and up) who wish to develop their skills in oils, acrylics, charcoal, pencil and pastels. Q. When are classes offered? A. We offer regularly scheduled group classes to fit any schedule. Our two-hour in-person fine art classes are available during the week with convenient morning, afternoon and evening sessions to choose from. We also offer private art lessons by appointment.

Q. What kind of group classes do you offer? A. We teach students to work with pencils, acrylics, oil, watercolors, graphite, charcoal and pastels. While taught in a group, these classes allow each student to focus on their individual projects. Q. What can new students expect when attending in-studio classes? A. We are a premium fine arts studio dedicated to helping teens and adults become better artists. Students will be instructed on how to create beautiful artwork in weeks. They will experience world-class instruction in a stunning luxury art studio. Q. Do I need to have any art experience? A. FEAR NOT!! Beginners are our specialty! Most of our students start with little to no experience. We welcome students of every level to our group and private art classes. Our teachers’ unique, personalized instruction allows beginner, intermediate and advanced artists alike to successfully create the art they are inspired to make. Q. What supplies do I need? A. No supplies are needed for the first class. After that, we provide students with limited drawing materials, but it is strongly recommended they purchase one of our drawing kits for practice in between studio sessions. Once students want to begin painting, they will need a painting kit. Q. Do you offer art supplies for purchase? A. Students can purchase or rent sample painting kits for $12.50 per two-hour lesson. We also sell premium art supplies, and we don’t offer anything that we ourselves don’t use. Our whole intent is to take the confusion out of finding the best art supplies, including charcoal, graphite, pastel, oil, watercolor and acrylics.
Q. Where are you located? A. Our studio space is convenient to Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, Westlake Village, Oak Park, Agoura Hills, Lake Sherwood and Calabasas. If you’d rather learn from the comforts of your own home or office, we will happily come to you! We offer private art classes both in-person and online. Q. Do you have any upcoming special events? A. We host monthly workshops on a variety of fine art subjects. Upcoming events include three workshops: figure drawing, head drawing and outdoor landscape. We also host Sip and Paint parties in studio and onsite at private gatherings. Sip and Paint events feature high-end, top-quality products, including a take-home paint kit and a really nice canvas. We provide step-by-step instruction on how to create your masterpiece. The Raminfard School of Arts is located at 30125 Agoura Road, Suite 2C (2nd Floor) in Agoura Hills. La Reina: 58 Years of Transformative Education In less than two years, La Reina High School & Middle School will celebrate 60 years of providing young women with an excellent academic and transformative education. Long treasured by families in the Conejo Valley, La Reina was founded by the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1964, the same year the City of Thousand Oaks was established. The Sisters of Notre Dame honor St. Julie Billiart as their “Spiritual Mother.” While St. Julie died more than 200 years ago, her guidance and life’s work in educating young people continues to infuse La Reina’s work with its students. Despite the challenges of her time during the French Revolution, Julie was confident in God’s goodness and Divine Providence. Today, La Reina’s faculty trust, as Julie did, that God is in our classrooms helping us do the great work of education. Sister Regina Robbins, La Reina’s Dean of Mission and school chaplain, recently shared more about Julie’s educational vision, formed more than 200 years ago, and how it continues to inform La Reina’s daily work with students.
WHY IS ST. JULIE, IN PARTICULAR, A SAINT FOR OUR TIME? Today we are experiencing a revolution at a speed hard to keep up with. Tensions between left and right, political unrest and divisions, human trafficking, homelessness, gender dysphoria, a deluge of messages coming to us via the internet and social media, as well as the TV and film industry. The value and meaning of family life and support is threatened. Secularism, materialism, superficial values that promise happiness, keep calling our youth to buy more, have more to fill up an aching emptiness. So much loss of learning and social skills due to COVID isolation. Fear of being labeled or left out has called our young to compromise their instinctive values to just fit in. Julie said, ‘We need courageous souls now more than ever.’ La Reina’s leadership, faculty and staff are inspired by Julie’s encouragement,
and it is with this spirit, trusting in the goodness of God, that we support our students and help them navigate.
HOW IS LA REINA UNIQUELY POSITIONED TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF STUDENTS TODAY? La Reina is unique, not only in its mission and vision, but in the way they are lived. Our mission at La Reina calls each of us to respond to the needs of our time. La Reina has a rich history in our community; it has a history of loving, educating and growing young women in a solid academic environment. Now, more than ever, La Reina educators are focused on what our children need, responding to those current needs and acknowledging the complexities of our time. The approach we take calls for listening and partnering with our community. Our educators take the time to listen to their students. We often say that La Reina educators teach the students before them rather than teach a curriculum. We say this because every year is unique, and every student is unique. This knowledge demands of us that we work together to foster an environment where student need is acknowledged, responded to and the school community grows together. Julie insisted that educators take note of the God-given talents of each child and bring those to development. With the instructional shift that our Principal Maggie Marschner has led over the past several years, leaning into our students’ God-given talents and strengths while building their confidence in new areas of knowledge and skill is our top priority.
WHAT IS MOST EXCITING ABOUT YOUR WORK WITH LA REINA’S STUDENTS? Now more than ever before in La Reina’s history, the school is being called to share the goodness of God and the love that He has for His children with the students we serve. I have truly enjoyed spending much of the last two years with our 6th and 7th grade girls, being present to them. CONTINUED > AUGUST 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/C ON E J OVA L L E Y

La Reina 2022 ASB President Sophiabella Salve Regina University, Class of 2026 Recipient of four-year scholarship to pursue global studies major
What I have felt most profoundly is their deep yearning to have a relationship with God. This was made even more clear to me when I recently began planning the retreats for next school year. Wanting to ensure that we meet our students’ needs, I asked the 6th-grade class to share how they would like to spend a retreat day. I was deeply moved by their responses and am pleased to share just a few: “I would like to go and pray and have time to talk to someone if something is troubling me or my friends.” Another young student wrote, “I would like to go to the chapel to listen to music and write in a journal. I would also like more time to talk and have spiritual counseling with the Sisters of Notre Dame, one on one.” Sophiabella, a 2022 graduate, recently offered the following in regard to her La Reina experience: “It wasn’t until my freshman year at La Reina that I started to foster a personal relationship with God. It was in Mrs. Sain’s 9th grade religion class that I learned who God is. Quite literally we were learning the history of the Catholic faith. The way Mrs. Sain taught the class made it interesting. Each year I learned different aspects of my Catholic faith, whether it was how to act or learning traditions. I found that it was the teachers that helped me to foster my faith. I was able to build my faith so that by my senior year on the 30th of April 2022, I was confirmed. While many see religion as an overwhelming set of rules and regulations, I learned at La Reina that religion is actually showing kindness into the world and trying to make the world a better place.”

STUDENT INDIE FILM E X PLOR E S IS SU E S OF FA M E , SELF-WORT H “The Colosseum,” a full-length feature film uniquely produced and directed by students in the OCS Institute of Art and Innovation (IAI) premiered in late spring as the showcase piece of the inaugural OCS Film Festival on the campus of Oaks Christian School. The film explores the issues of the price of fame and the basis for self-worth. While many high school film departments produce videos and short documentaries, “The Colosseum” stands apart as a student-driven film from conception to opening. Few schools nationwide produce a full-length feature film completely directed, produced, filmed and edited by high school students. “These students are creating award-winning films that are on-par with anything coming out of some of the best college programs in the country,” said Kristoffer Polaha, actor (“Wonder Woman” 1984, “Little Fires Everywhere”) and IAI advisory council member. “These films highlight the creative work going on at Oaks that is preparing their students to be future leaders in the entertainment industry.” “The Colosseum” is the second film IAI students have written, produced, directed and edited. Last year’s film, “Missperception,” has already garnered over 10 awards from festivals around the country, including the Los Angeles Film

Awards, the Seattle Film Festival, and the San Diego International Kids Film Festival and featured a cameo by actor Sean Astin (“Lord of the Rings,” “Goonies”). In addition to “The Colosseum” the festival highlighted other student projects created this year such as music videos, two covers and one original song, and silent films that span comedy to dramas. Also highlighted was an award-winning documentary about clinical trials in China that has already won seven festival laurels. Capstone short films on freedom, student athletes, friendship, grief and revenge were also featured. Students are creating these works under the auspices of the IAI, which partners with entertainment industry professionals and some Hollywood celebrities to offer mentorship to students to accelerate their creative and professional growth. Students can concentrate on various disciplines in the arts, such as vocal performance, music and film production, dance, music production, songwriting and photography. In addition to Polaha, the IAI advisory council includes Grammy Winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Jimmy Jam, Alan Carter (“The Voice”), as well as producer/ actor Ryan O’Quinn (“Believe,” “Paul’s Promise”). “To my knowledge there is no other program like this in the country,” said O’Quinn of Damascus Road Productions. “Students at the high school level have access to industry professionals that are speaking into their future careers and mentoring the next generation of filmmakers. Among other things this offers them a huge leg-up in the college application process.” The IAI also works with other intra-school institutes on their projects, such as an engineering organization that gives students access to 3-D printers, design software and technology programs. Last semester the two student groups collaborated on “Missperception” and together they designed and built a rolling crane that holds a film camera and was used in the filming process. In addition to the student-led projects, institute students also have the ability to work on projects with industry professionals. During the remote learning phase of 2020, IAI students spoke into the development of a script produced by Damascus Road Productions and were also virtually on set during some aspects of filming. The film they worked on will have a nationwide theatrical release later this year. Learn more about Oaks Christian’s IAI Program at OaksChristian.org.

Casa Pacifica Serves Up 9th Annual Yummie Top Chef Dinner The 9th Annual Yummie Top Chef Dinner moved to Rancho De Las Palmas in Moorpark, standing alone and separate from the annual Casa Pacifica Angels Wine, Food & Brew Festival for the first time. The sold-out, “Under the Tuscan Stars”themed dinner gathered some of Casa Pacifica’s previous Yummie Culinary Competition winners to create an unforgettable epicurean event. Retired Sheriff Geoff Dean returned as emcee and continued his reign as a crowd favorite with his humor and passion for Casa Pacifica’s cause of helping foster and at-risk youth. The showcased chefs cooked up incredible dishes for more than 225 guests to enjoy and together with the winemakers shared special details of their creations. Following a cocktail hour, guests were treated to the first culinary treat of the night—Ahi Tuna Tartare by Chef Nic Manocchio of University Auxiliary Services CSUCI, complemented with Rocks & Drams’ specialty cocktails—an Old Fashioned and a Coconut Cucumber Spritz—and Institution Ale Co.’s RX Pils, winner of Casa Pacifica’s 2022 Best in Fest Brewery Competition. Guests bid through the night on live and silent auction items such as sporting event packages, a helicopter tour, private chef dinners, wine baskets, fine jewelry, special getaways and more. A highlight of the silent auction was beautiful paintings, tiles and jewelry designed and handmade by kids at Casa Pacifica. All proceeds from auctioned art pieces went directly to Casa Pacifica’s Recreational Therapy Department. To kick-off the sit-down portion of the dinner, hosts Hugh and Keets Cassar of The Cassar Family

gave a warm welcome and led guests in a cheerful toast to Casa Pacifica. Guests enjoyed a beautifully prepared Duck Confit Salad presented by Chef Nic Manocchio of University Auxiliary Services, CSUCI, with blood orange vanilla bean vinaigrette, radicchio, fennel, arugula, dried cherries and Point Reyes blue cheese. The salad was paired with Brassfield Estate Winery’s lovely 2019 Pinot Gris. The third course, Local Red Snapper, was prepared by Chef Jason Collis, Vice President of World Central Kitchen, and featured a delicious Catalan saffron tomato sauce finished with ground almonds and garlic. The Red Snapper was paired with Magnavino Cellars’ excellent 2018 Reserve Chardonnay. Next, the Intermezzo course cleaned and refreshed guests’ palates with a lovely glass of honeydew and mint-infused Prosecco, melon ball and mint oil. The fifth course presented guests with a beautiful Lamb Risotto by Chef Alex Montoya of Water’s Edge and Waterside restaurants, comprised of flavorful sumac-braised lamb shoulder, parmesan risotto, chimichurri butter and micro greens. The Ojai Vineyard’s 2018 John Sebastiano Grenache boldly accompanied the course. The sixth and main course featured incredible Korean BBQ Short Ribs by Chef Alex Castillo of Latitude 34—slow roasted ribs, brushed with a flavorful sweet and spicy sauce, served over
steamed Calrose rice. Opolo Vineyard’s 2020 Mountain Zinfandel was a perfect pairing to the course. And finally, course seven offered an irresistible dessert trio of a citrus-infused Mascarpone Mousse Mini Chocolate Tart by Chef Julia San Bartolome of Sweet Arleen’s, a smooth Pistachio Cookie Butter Gelato created by Chef Alex Montoya representing Honey Cup Coffee House & Creamery, and a tangy, sweet Lemon Drop Crunch Mini Cupcake by Missy Drayton of Missy’s Cupcake Creations. Dessert also included drinks from The Cappuccino Express and a unique Rocks & Drams’ Tiny Teeling Martini made with Teeling Irish Whiskey Small Batch, espresso, and spiced Demerara Cane.
