LIFESTYLE LETTER

Wisdom From My Father, the Dodgers and Jackie Robinson When you read this much of what will be written about the 75th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in baseball will have already been done. Since June is our Men’s issue, I’ll use this platform as a conclusion to all of that. I’ll weave my father, Harold Malkin, into this narrative because his enlightened view for those times (the 1940s and 50s) remains one of my fondest memories. My dad loved baseball and imparted that love to me. Living in Philadelphia, we were Phillies fans through thick and thin. Back then, mostly thin. In the 1950s (except for the 1950 Whiz Kids) the Phillies were regularly hammered into submission by the Brooklyn Dodgers. Duke Snider, Roy Campanella, Don Newcombe, Pee Wee Reese and of course Jackie Robinson beat down on what were otherwise decent (but all White) Phillies teams. Dad always made it a point to take me to Dodgers games. The games were always sold out and the attendees were, unlike for other teams, about 75% Black fans who rooted vociferously for the Dodgers. Being a kid, I did not understand what was going on. “Why are all these people rooting for the Dodgers?” My dad explained in detail what Jackie Robinson (he was the engine that drove that Dodgers team) and his bravery in the face of open hostility and eventually what all of the other great Black Major Leaguers of that time, like Campanella, Newcombe, Willie Mays, Larry Doby, Minnie Minoso and Monte Irvin, meant to baseball. And not just to baseball, but to America. He then gave me a book titled, Great Negro Baseball Players. In it were profiles of the great Negro League stars who never had a chance to play in the Majors (or like Satchel Paige made it at the end of his career). Josh Gibson, Buck Leonard, Cool Papa Bell, Pop Lloyd and many others. My eyes were opened. I had never learned that in school. So here’s to my father, Harold (or Heschel as his friends called him). Here’s to the Dodgers and their wisdom and also to 1947 Dodgers like Pee Wee Reese and Clem Labine who embraced a Black teammate. Finally, here’s to the brave and trail-breaking legacy of Jackie Robinson. BEN MALKIN, PUBLISHER | @CONE JOVALLE YLIFEST YLEMAGA ZINE

Celebrating Marvelous Men The Conejo Valley is filled with remarkable men who make a positive difference in everything they do. The following four men in particular have spent the majority of their lives working toward the greater good for all.

“The deed carries its own reward.” As a Gas Company Pipeline Technician for nearly four decades, Chris Cook takes great pride in making sure that high pressure gas lines are located correctly for contractors and ensuring everyone’s safety. “I also try my best to lead by example in regard to having a good work ethic—I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty and do the hard work,” says Chris, who was born and raised in Ventura County. Leading by example also means giving back to his community as a volunteer at Casa Pacifica, a local nonprofit organization that offers adolescent and family services designed to treat victims of abuse and neglect, substance abuse, homelessness, and other behavioral and mental health issues. At Casa Pacifica, where Chris was named Volunteer of the Year, “I love building things, so anything needed for the children’s parties is fun to plan and build. The parties are always a fun theme. I built a tiki bar for our Hawaiian Christmas a few years ago.” Chris also volunteers to help with Casa Pacifica’s fundraising events, like the Angels Wine, Food & Brew Festival, which has established itself as Ventura County’s premiere Wine & Food event. “Whatever they need fixed, built or organized—I’m up for it,” Chris emphasizes. He has also done volunteer work for the City of Ventura, where “I’ve overseen and built four playgrounds around Ventura County.” Reflecting on his life so far, Chris says one of his greatest accomplishments is staying at the same job as

a pipeline technician for nearly four decades. He is also proud of his wife, Tamiann, and their two children, Tyler, age 27, and Sara, age 31. As far as his secrets to success are concerned, Chris offers the following advice: “Ask what you need and get it done.” When it comes to working with other people, he also believes it’s important to ask: “How can I help? How can I make it easier for you? How can we accomplish what needs to be done?” What inspires him the most is “helping others.” He especially enjoys overcoming challenges to complete a task and seeing tasks through to the end, so he can move on to the next thing. Also, “being organized inspires me—to be organized means I’m organized on all levels.” When he’s not involved with work or philanthropy, Chris enjoys playing video games; spending time with his two English retrievers, Bella and Stella; and engaging in activities with his family, such as building items he and his wife see on Pinterest. Additionally, “I would like to get back into softball.” In the future, he’s looking forward to retirement, as well as upcoming projects at Casa Pacifica. “There’s so much to be done there. Tami, my wife, is president of the Casa Pacifica Angels, and with her leadership, they are making major events and projects happen.” While the past two years have been incredibly challenging due to the global pandemic, Chris offers the following words of wisdom: “Stay the course and it will be fine,” he says. “Focus on dealing with the here. Accept the facts. Try to be prepared, but be flexible to adjust to the situation.”

“Do what you love and make a career out of it— and the rest will fall into place.” With nearly four decades of experience in portfolio management and financial planning, Tom Fisher takes great pride in overseeing assets for individuals, families, private foundations and other charitable organizations. “I’m a teacher at heart,” says Tom, the Chief Investment Officer for Montecito Bank & Trust, which serves Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. “I enjoy helping people and communicating complex ideas to them in language they can understand.” Flashback to the early 1980s when Tom took his first personal financial class at Santa Barbara City College at age 19. “I had an amazing instructor—John Bowman,” Tom remembers of the mentor who inspired him. “It was my first exposure to concepts such as banking basics, financial planning and investments. I teach the fundamentals, and that goes back to that great teacher who motivated me to become interested in this career path.” Today, he enjoys guiding people “through this complex maze of financial planning questions… it’s a comprehensive plan and a holistic look at a client’s situation, guiding them through the different options. Ultimately the client makes the decision, but I want them to make that decision with professional direction and guidance so they feel confident about their investment plan.” One of the things that attracted Tom to Montecito Bank & Trust “is their strong community impact— this is something the founder created.” For instance, “we provide more than 5,400 volunteer hours per year to local nonprofits…we are having a meaningful impact on the communities that we serve.” Tom also volunteered his expertise to help wounded military members. This was inspired by his father, who was an airplane engine mechanic in the Army Air Corps in World War II.

24

H OM E TOWN H E R O | L IFE + CULTURE

“He was blind in one eye from a fishing accident as a child, so he memorized the eye chart so he could get into the Army,” Tom recalls. “I never served in the military, but when he told me that story I wanted to do something for the military. On two occasions, I worked with severely wounded Marines from Iraq and Afghanistan and created financial plans for them to get them in their forever home.” In other philanthropy, “I’m currently the president of the Rotary Club of Montecito,” Tom says of the service organization with the motto: “Service above self.” “We are looking to raise $20,000 from member donations…for humanitarian relief in Ukraine.” Tom believes giving back to others “is in our DNA…you feel part of something bigger than yourself. There’s a real sense of pride and accomplishment when you help people and see the results.” When it comes to things that have inspired him, Tom noted, The Wisdom of Wooden: My Century On and Off the Court and The Pyramid of Success, both authored by John Wooden, who used the Pyramid to train and develop the UCLA men’s basketball teams that won 10 NCAA Championships in 12 years. “I’m also a big fan of Warren Buffet,” Tom says. “I like to share Buffet’s wisdom with young people.” Invest in stocks like you’re buying the whole business. When he’s not involved with work or philanthropy, Tom enjoys golfing with his wife, traveling, and spending time with their three grandchildren. As the world continues to change during these challenging times, he offers the following advice: “Continue to keep the faith. Realize that the situation we’re in today will change—that we know for sure—so remain positive and hopeful.”

“Greatness from small beginnings.” –Sir Francis Drake For Kevin Gamboa, working as an ambulance EMT and volunteering with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ventura County is all about service to others. “Every day, multiple times a day, I get to be a part of a team that helps the people in Ventura County when they have an emergency and need to call 9-1-1,” says Kevin, of Moorpark, who has also been a Big Brother (mentor) to a little boy named Dorian for the past six years. “Signing up to help this smart and cool little man has been the single best decision I have ever made,” emphasizes Kevin, who has helped guide Dorian through everything from his first romantic relationships to run-ins with school bullies— and most recently, his first job. “I am proud to say that I am his brother and I helped him on his way to being a positive member of the community.” In related endeavors, Kevin is president of the BBBSVC Ambassador Group, a team that arranges outings for “Bigs” and “Littles” to get together. “At these outings, the kids get to meet other kids and see that they are not alone in the program, and they also get to see other kids with similar family situations,” Kevin explains. Looking back on his life so far, he is proud of the 15-year-long career he had in finance, which was the profession he left in order to work in emergency medical services. Additionally, “I am proud to be a Big Brother to both Dorian and to my biological brother, Eric. I am proud to be

serving our county as an EMT on an ambulance in the 9-1-1 system.” Wisdom that infuses his daily life comes from people like Sir Francis Drake, the famous navigator and sailor, who stated: “Greatness from small beginnings.” “It reminds me that no matter how small we feel we are, we can all achieve great things,” Kevin says. In other wisdom, his favorite book is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. “I read it often, especially when I need to be reminded to follow my dreams,” Kevin says. “It also inspires me to challenge myself. It encouraged me to travel the world to learn as much as I can.” He is particularly inspired by his father, who came to America as an immigrant with nothing and has made a great life for himself and his family. “He has always worked to build up the people around him,” Kevin says. “That is why it is always important to me to help others as much as I can.” As far as the future is concerned, Kevin looks forward to watching Dorian grow “into the good man I know he will be.” Additionally, “I am working on my path to become a firefighter.” As communities continue to navigate their lives in the midst of the pandemic, Kevin offers the following advice: “Remember this time—people will be asking you about this time for the rest of your life,” he says. “Remember that you made it through. The pandemic was hard, but you made it through. That is just proof of how strong you are.”

“It’s not how much you have or how much you accumulate in life—it’s how many people you impact along the way.” As a State Farm Insurance agent for nearly four decades, Moy Serrano feels fortunate to have many clients who have stayed with him for up to 30 years. “I now insure their kids and grandkids,” says Moy, a resident of Thousand Oaks since 1967 who earned his degree in Business Administration from California Lutheran University. Over the years, he has helped many folks in not losing their homes, avoid being sued because of an accident, and/or making sure that a life insurance policy was in effect for the family. “That has been very rewarding to help out my clients,” he says. In other endeavors, Moy has been involved with the Mexican Chamber in Oxnard, “where I took on the challenge of how to run it in a better, more honest way; saved the D.A.R.E. (program)…and I started a golf tournament that went on for years to raise funds for the program.” Additionally, he is the founder of HOY—Help Our Youth—a nonprofit that provides mentoring for youths by helping them with life tools, career choice and direction for earning a degree. “We are planning a big project where we are developing a community farm to educate students on the process of growing different foods, how they grow, how the insects play a part and why it’s good to eat fresh organic food instead of processed food,” Moy explains. When he’s not immersed in his vocation and philanthropic activities, Moy enjoys hobbies, such as making things out of wood, welding and

building furniture. He is also a collector of Hot Wheels, with more than 100 in his office and more than 3,000 in his home collection. Reflecting on his life and the things that have inspired him along the way, Moy said the book, The Power of Choice has made a positive difference. “We decide how much we let things that happen in our lives affect us, hurt us, make us react the wrong way or make us go into depression,” he says. “When you are in control of mind over body, you can overcome a lot.” The married father of three sons with a 3-yearold grandson also takes pride in the men his sons have become. “They are all good, responsible, honest hard-working men,” says Moy, adding that he was able to send his sons to college without any financial assistance. “They could start without debt—that has been a big accomplishment for me and my kids.” Moy says it’s important to be grateful for each day: “Don’t waste it and enjoy the moment in whatever you are doing…I always look at what tomorrow will bring.” In today’s challenging times, he adds the following advice: “Keep being positive,” Moy emphasizes. “Remember, you are not the only person in this situation—we are all in it. Do your part and keep moving forward. Remember the power of choice…keep your head up high and don’t stop working to better yourself and those around you.” As far as his future is concerned, “I look forward to enjoying more family time and hope for more grandkids.”

Immerse in Fitness at Row House ROW YOUR WAY TO A HEALTHIER PHYSIQUE ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI

Ester Ovakimian is all about fitness. After opening multiple Club Pilates studios, she and her husband, Sarkis Ovakimian, decided to expand and offer amazing and energetic rowing classes through Row House, a franchise started in 2014 by Xponential Fitness. Xponential Fitness was founded in 2017 by Anthony Geisler, an entrepreneur and leader in a variety of fitness offerings including Pilates, cycling, stretching, dance, running, boxing, yoga and, of course, rowing. Regardless of a person’s fitness level, there’s a rowing class for everyone. As you sit in your erg, or rowing machine, you’ll find the rest of the crew of 15 to 25 people all rowing in sync while rhythmic music pumps up the volume and low lighting provides a truly immersive experience. The benefits of rowing are numerous and offer a great balance of optimizing aerobic endurance and muscular strength. Your personal indoor rowing machine is calibrated to measure the amount of energy you are using so you can gain real results through recorded data on its Row House app. “It records meters, how far you’ve rowed, low split time and average split time, or pace, so you can see how you’re getting stronger,” Ester says. Here, she shares more about what members can expect on this cool and unique Row House fitness journey.

Q. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT CLASSES OFFERED AT ROW HOUSE?

Q. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO OPEN A ROW HOUSE FRANCHISE? WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THIS PARTICULAR FRANCHISE?

Q. TELL US ABOUT THE METER PROGRAM.

A. We decided to open Row House after joining our local Row House and realizing how fun, effective and inclusive the concept is. The decision was easy since the brand was part of Xponential Fitness, which also owns Club Pilates.

Q. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ROWING? A. Our classes are low impact, and with 86% of your muscles being used, you’re using your cage, trunk and core. And, you’re doing all that while saving the integrity of your joints.

40

G E T ACT IV E | FITN ESS

A. All of our classes are rhythmic based and music driven. Signature is our most popular class—it’s made up of rowing and floor work intervals. Our Restore class offers dynamic stretching between the rowing segments, and our Full Row class is our endurance and calorie-burning class. Power is our high intensity, heart pumping but still low-impact class, and you’ll definitely be challenged.

Q. DESCRIBE THE EXPERIENCE OF TAKING PART IN A CLASS. A. You’ll be rowing to the beat of the music, and it’s like every single person is in the same boat rowing as a team—there’s so much energy and community.

Q. WHAT IS SOME OF THE FEEDBACK YOU HAVE HEARD AFTER THE CLASSES? A. Row House has been the best part of the day! We hear that our classes are fun and effective. We always get compliments on our coaches; they enjoy working together and hitting the goals together. We’ve also heard that it’s refreshing, and classes pass by so quickly!

Q. HOW DOES MEMBERSHIP WORK? A. It’s a month-to-month membership. We have a few different options, but none of them require a commitment.

A. We acknowledge milestones for the members of our community. They get a specific t-shirt and are added to the Wall of Fame when hitting certain meters.

Q. WHAT IS “ROW FOR A CAUSE” AND HOW DOES IT WORK? A. We Work [a commercial real estate company that provides shared workspaces] is a current member and we will be doing events to help a charity out as a studio! To learn more, visit www.TheRowHouse.com/location/Westlake-Village and then come out and row, row, row your way to fitness and fun!

Every Woman’s Dream? Adventures With a House Hubby ARTICLE BY KIMBERLY BLAKER

I was one of those lucky women whose husband helped around the house. But I still remember trying to convince him to assist the first few years of our marriage when the kids were little, and I was working full time. I became so desperate, one day I calculated on paper the total time I expended daily for every little task. Changing diapers, 45 minutes; laundry, an hour; cleaning up the house, two hours 20 minutes; errands, an hour and a half; feeding our newborn, three hours; and so on. By the time I compiled the list, I was exhausted just thinking about it. But my list brought about a seemingly miraculous change. Suddenly, my couch potato was buying groceries, folding clothes and tackling many other household duties. He was becoming the perfect Mr. Mom. Of course, I had no clue what I was getting into. Our grocery bill quickly doubled; every meal was a full-blown buffet. My 5-year-old daughter was soon asking why my shirts were hanging in her closet. As for the kitchen, it was unrecognizable. I now had my very own Chef De la Klutz. One day upon entering the kitchen, I instantly froze looking at the cyclone that had hit. The entire room was coated with dry pancake mix as if the box had exploded. Immobilized from the sight, I discovered the secrets to my husband's gourmet meals. He’d grab the handle of the frying pan, and with a quick upward jerk, 10 sausages were doing acrobats through the air as their oily perspiration splattered the kitchen walls. Next, preparing the pancakes, I nearly mistook my husband for my 5-year-old learning to pour as batter spilled over the edges of the skillet. I continued to watch in awe, finally catching a breath of relief as he began to clean up. The relief, however, was only temporary. He grabbed the dishcloth, ran it under cold water, and

began mopping the counter; I guess his mother never taught him to ring out the dishcloth. As he sloshed the water around the counter, it ran down the cabinets. Not to worry though, our brand-new carpet would absorb the overflow. I could watch no more. I finally offered my help to finish cleaning the mess, and my hubby eagerly obliged. He then rinsed his hands under the faucet and shook them over the soon-to-be-eaten meal. I suppose it would have been too much to ask him to use one of the seven dishtowels he had strewn about the kitchen. As he left the wreckage, I wiped the perspiration from my forehead. Following dinner, I spent no less than an hour cleaning the disaster zone. This led to more calculations. If I had prepared the meal, it would have taken 30 minutes and the cleaning another 15. I’d have completed the task in a record time of 45 minutes. How was it possible to have enlisted his help and then have to spend more time in the kitchen? Luckily, he did finally catch on. Or maybe I just didn’t allow him to do quite as much while closing my eyes to the rest. Still, I tried to keep in mind the sincerity behind his helpfulness is what mattered most. By the time our kids were grown, he did have the housework techniques skillfully mastered. So if you're struggling to get your husband's help around the house, give my calculation method a shot. Once he begins to pitch in, just take plenty of deep breaths. Though it may take a while to train him, the eventual reward is worth the agony and wait. A Tradition of Giving Back: Community Celebration Boosts Nonprofits ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI

48

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | EN T E RTAI NME NT

In 1956, a group of families, friends and community members came together to hold a festival called Conejo Valley Days. It was a chance to honor the Chumash, a Native American people who inhabited the Thousand Oaks area for around 10,000 years, the community and all the ranchers who populated the territory. Many of these local ranchers raised animals mainly for the movie industry, explains Frank Akrey, the president and event coordinator of Conejo Valley Days whose family was one of its founders. A lot of the animals seen on television back then, including Leo the Lion (the mascot for the film studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer), lived on these ranches. Now in its 66th year, Conejo Valley Days is a beloved community tradition. The annual five-day event continues to focus on celebrating the area’s diverse heritage and volunteer spirit while supporting local nonprofits by providing a venue to fundraise for the many services they provide to the community. Proceeds, says Frank, go to many area nonprofits like Teen Challenge of Southern California, which helps teens suffering from opiate addiction and homelessness; the Ventura County Medical Explorers, which gives youths insight into the different fields of Emergency Medical Services; and the Ventura Police Explorers Program, which is designed to give high schoolers the opportunity to learn firsthand the challenges, duties and responsibilities of a police officer and gain a better understanding of the law enforcement profession. Other recipients include Boy Scout troops, churches, Families of Fallen Firefighters, the United Way, Parent-Teacher Associations, Rotary Clubs and many more. These and other nonprofit groups and school organizations use the event as their primary annual fundraiser. They help organize and promote the event, oversee the food stands and ticket booths, and help with trash cleanup. “We basically raise money and commerce for everybody in town, from the Fire Department and the Police Department to the Conejo Valley Park and Recreation Department,” says Frank.

The county fair-sized carnival features fun rides, food, vendors, first-class entertainment and more. “We have a complete food court celebrating our local cuisine, which is basically Tri-Tip Chili, beans and other ranch goodies. We also have beer and wine for the grownups,” he says. In addition, there will be Western-attired exhibitors and vendors selling unique merchandise, plus arts and crafts booths and carnival games. As always, expect thrilling rides for kids and adults like the Tornado and Orient Express, plus a carousel and teacups ride. Kids can earn free ride tickets through the Read & Ride literacy program open to children from kindergarten through eighth grade who read three books approved by parents or teachers and write a summary about each one. They can bring a completed and signed form to the carnival and receive three free tickets. Live music is also a big part of Conejo Valley Days and something attendees look forward to every year. Past entertainment has included Edgar Winter, the Gregg Rollie Band, Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters, Foghat, and Ambrosia. This year, says Frank, they’re looking forward to an equally wonderful lineup of artists. Conejo Valley Days entertains about 26,000 visitors each year during its five-day run. It’s a great time for the whole family, and of course, many sponsors are needed to keep this tradition going. “It all started in 1956, which is the year I was born, so I’ve always felt very connected to it,” says Frank. “I plan on being its president for the 100th year, so I have 34 more years to go. I love doing it, and I think I'll make it—I'll be 100 years old then too!” Enjoy Conejo Valley Days at Conejo Creek Park, 1300 Janss Road, from June 16th through 26th and support the local community and those organizations that make it great. While there, eat some delicious food, listen to amazing live music, buy a few unique items and don’t forget to hop on a few rides! For more information, visit ConejoValleyDays.US.

The World in Focus Khanna Vision Institute Promotes Healthy Eyes and Optimal Vision

In order to see clearly, whether up close or far away, many of us need glasses or contact lenses, especially as we get older. The problems with these are many, including everchanging prescriptions and misplacing glasses to irritated eyes. Wouldn’t it be nice to work, play sports, read and see the world around us without these bothersome issues? Thanks to ever-improving technology and Khanna Vision Institute, we can. “I originally became an eye surgeon 30 years ago to help people regain vision,” says the owner of the practice, Dr. Rajesh Khanna, a medical doctor certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. “But, over the last few years, my mission has become bigger.” In addition to their main office in Beverly Hills, Khanna Vision Institute now has offices in Westlake Village, Inglewood, Sherman Oaks, Moorpark and Oxnard and has five optometrists on staff. Even more locations are planned as well so more people will have access to their services. In order to provide an integrated approach, Dr. Khanna has also installed in-house labs for eyeglasses. “This way kids can come in for eye exams, and then as they grow up, we can do contact lenses and glasses, and then surgery as they age,” he says. All vision needs will be provided in one place. Dr. Khanna is proud of the fact that he and his team really spend time with patients and listen carefully to find out exactly what’s needed in order for them to enjoy their best sight. Before any treatment is scheduled, all information, including costs, is provided upfront so patients know exactly what to expect. He and his staff have a motto: “The Patient is King.” “We are here for the patient; the patient is not here for us,” he says. “There are a lot of choices available, so we need to listen to what the problem is to find the best solution. Taking time with patients and listening is becoming a dying art in medicine.” Multiple types of eye surgeries, which are only performed by Dr. Khanna, take place in his Beverly Hills and Westlake Village locations. Of course, there’s the well-known and

in-demand Lasik surgery, but when patients aren’t eligible candidates for Lasik due to age and other factors, he can also provide Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) surgery. Whereas Lasik is a surgery that removes tissue by laser, ICL inserts a lens into the eye for optimal vision. Dr. Khanna is also experienced with pterygium (or surfer’s eye) removal. (Pterygia are benign growths that affect vision and may become cancerous.) In addition, he offers Presbyopic Implant in Eye (PIE) surgery, which treats presbyopia, which is a change in the natural lens of the eye that occurs over time and affects one’s ability to see near objects. Dr. Khanna wrote a book, Rejuvenate Aging Eyes: The Miracle of PIE, about this surgery. Another critical treatment Khanna Vision Institute offers is Corneal Cross-Linking. “This is very important for young kids,” he says. “In the teenage years, this disease is rampant and our interventions over the last decade can prevent them from going blind.” Recovery from these surgeries is usually only a day or two but may be faster depending on the patient. “I see a lot of very high level and demanding patients who want the best and also need to return to work pretty fast,” says Dr. Khanna. “I recently called one of my patients, a CEO, six hours after surgery on both eyes, and when I asked how he was doing, he said, ‘I'm working.’” All of his post-surgery patients get his personal cell phone number in case they have any questions or concerns. Patients are also given a lifetime warranty on all surgeries. “If at any time something has to be touched up, which is very rare, we do it at no cost,” he says. Dr. Khanna has successfully performed tens of thousands of vision correction procedures, including on his son, mother and staff members. He uses the latest and safest equipment and techniques to guarantee a pain-free and exceptional experience and has an impeccable bedside manner that makes patients feel comfortable and relaxed. MY DAD, MY FRIEND ARTICLE BY KIM PAGANO This year my dad is turning 90. I am so blessed to still have him and all of our heart-to-heart talks—and there have been many! I want to honor him in my column. My dad’s name is Marty; he was born in London, England. My parents came to California on the Queen Mary (my mom was pregnant with me at that time); yes, the same boat that's docked in Long Beach! My dad was very strict while I was growing up because he felt if you weren’t doing your best, why do it? My dad was always a positive light and a self-starter. He always found time to keep it light with a few good jokes; that’s the way he lived his life. Family was always very important. If there was something he could do to help you, he was there. He enjoyed his grandchildren and never missed a holiday, and he even spent Christmas Eve at our home for 30 years; he and my husband would get bagels at 7:30 a.m. before Christmas started, creating a cherished family tradition. Even in the most stressful times, my dad would find humor. If someone was in the hospital or he would be hunting down a good cup of coffee, he was happy and always kept a bright outlook. I know I could even stop by a gas station and bring him a coffee with vanilla, and it would make his day. My dad had two sisters whom he was very close with in different ways. You could say my dad was a very black and white kind of person. If he tried something one way and it didn’t work, he would say, “Let’s try the other way.” My dad worked until he was well into his 80s and loved his work. It really made him feel like he had a purpose. He was an interior decorator and could make any home look beautiful, down to the color on the walls and the type of fabric. He knew how to sew and upholster almost anything, and he was very talented. His favorite saying was “Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and keep going on.” He lived by that motto, and I believe it helped me get to where I am today. All of his little positive talks of encouragement made me believe there was always a way through any obstacle. Whenever I called him, he was always happy to hear from me. Dad, you were the best dad anyone could have. I truly treasure our relationship as dad and daughter, but better yet, I always think of you as my friend. Happy Birthday Dad! Thank you for being the best dad a girl could have! Love you, Dad!
