LIFESTYLE LETTER

Feather Your Nest

April 2022 PUBLISHER S

Ben Malkin | Ben.Malkin@citylifestyle.com Robin Chesler | Robin.Chesler@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

This month we focus on the home. What is really interesting is that during the pandemic your home, our home and seemingly everyone else’s home has almost become an extreme focus. The remodeling industry for interior and exterior improvements has boomed. Perhaps it was a search by homeowners for something to feel good about, so why not feel good about the home and garden in which you are seemingly trapped? Certainly, better than cabin fever. Has it all gone smoothly? Of course not. Anyone who has undergone a major renovation of their home knows that even during normal times it is physically and emotionally disruptive. No matter how well you plan, things can always go wrong. Delays occur. What you thought you wanted isn’t what you received. Stuff happens. However, during the pandemic things have been considerably more difficult. After almost a year, the remodeling of our bathrooms has still not been completed. We are still waiting for parts for the shower enclosures and a shower water temperature control was installed wrong and still needs to be fixed. Maybe I need to take more baths like Tuco in the film, “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.” At least the new free standing bathtub works. Our cat, Cameo, is on the brink of a nervous breakdown from all of the noise and intrusive strangers. She may need therapy before this is all over. Fortunately, our contractors and our designer have “hung in there.” Windows and doors are finally here (today, as I write this). They were backordered for six months. The showers should be finished by mid-March. We replaced all of our old outdoor garden lighting with high quality lights made in California. FYI, we use businesses that we trust. If you come across them in this magazine it is because we recommend them. We hold them to a high standard, or we do not accept their advertising. So go ahead and feather your nest. Your home has really become your castle.

Beautify any outdoor area with Angelus Paving Stones, an industry favorite since 1946 for concrete paving stones and decorative retaining wall blocks for municipal, commercial and residential projects. The family owned business’ dedication to quality and service has fueled the company’s growth for the past 70+ years, catapulting it to become the largest dry cast concrete manufacturing capacity facility in California. Servicing, selling and distributing to contractors and dealer networks throughout Southern California, Angelus stocks a wide range of products, including the popular Paseo and Pavilion large format pavers for patio and pool decks, as well as plank-style Aqualina and Timberline pavers. Many customers find the wood plank look and the low maintenance and longevity of concrete pavers to be a winning combination. The low-maintenance, long-lasting high quality of concrete pavers make them an even more attractive hardscape enhancement. Homeowners are often surprised to learn that a properly installed concrete paver driveway can last 30 years or more and offers an additional advantage of seamless repair in case underground utilities need to be accessed. Repairing or replacing an underground sewer line or water main in many cases involves simply removing and resetting the pavers over newly compacted base and bedding sand, saving homeowners considerable time and money.

From your imagination to installation, The Folding Door Store can make your dream home a reality. With over 30 years of construction experience, Owner Brad Kinder and his team of design consultants believe quality is paramount. Door selection may seem relatively straightforward, but the details of construction and function can be the difference between a subpar and stellar user experience. This insight inspired Kinder, a builder and general contractor, to start a company and set to work. “I travelled all over the country, met with owners, toured manufacturing facilities and brought only the best folding and sliding doors back to the showroom.” The result was more than eight brands offering a range of prices and styles from which to choose. WDC Kitchen & Bath Center—a family-owned business founded in 1981 under the name of Warehouse Discount Center—focuses on adapting and innovating to meet the expectations and needs of the communities they serve. “What makes us stand out from our competitors are our incredibly talented sales professionals—some of whom have worked in this industry for over 20 years,” says Marketing Manager Erika Gordillo. The sales team members are directly trained by the appliance manufacturers, so they always remain current with the latest trends and technological developments within the industry. “Our core philosophy is to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of our industry to provide the best available products and services to our communities,” Gordillo re-emphasizes. She notes that due to the global pandemic, a chain reaction of serious supply chain shortage has caused an unprecedented increase in price—up to a 20% increase in fact. “Unfortunately, this development is completely out of our control,” Gordillo says. “What we can control is how we react to these global changes. Very early into the pandemic we began to stock up our inventory. We wanted to make sure our communities had the necessary items they needed to get through this global event.” In recent accolades, WDC Kitchen & Bath Center won The Luxury Products Group Showroom of the Year for 2021. “What a pleasant surprise,” says Steven Loria, director of plumbing at WDC. “There are so many showrooms in LPG that are deserving of this award. We are thrilled and honored to receive this recognition.” The WDC Kitchen & Bath Center warehouse in Moorpark is now bursting at the seams with products that are reasonably priced and are ready for local next-day delivery. With over $20 million in stock, WDC is well stocked with most brands and models. “Many of our competitors ask customers to wait up to eight months for appliances,” Gordillo says. “Our customers will benefit from our swift reaction to these global

events by purchasing hard-to-find items at reasonable, competitive prices.” For instance, you can find anything from a basic 30-inch slide-in range to a custom built-in 48-inch professional grade range with double ovens. You can also find anything from a small upright freezer for your garage to a built-in, custom paneled, all-freezer and all-refrigerator set that will blend in with your home’s cabinetry. The same applies to any of WDC’s other product categories: dishwashers, laundry sets, outdoor cooking, plumbing fixtures and even mattresses. “Remodeling your kitchen or bath is on the rise in record numbers during this pandemic,” says Gordillo, adding that sitting at home in quarantine really sheds light on all the flaws in your home. “So, why not get it fixed or updated? Some homeowners might think that the supply chain shortage and inflation might hinder their plans, and they may be right to some extent,” she says. “The key is to plan ahead and do the research.” A dream remodel varies depending on the dreamer. “My idea of a dream remodel can differ vastly compared to my neighbor or the homeowner across town,” says Gordillo, adding that there is no right or wrong when it comes to remodeling your home. “The end goal is to create a space that brings you and your family comfort, peace and joy,” she says. “Your home should be an escape from the outside world; a safe zone and a place to enjoy your time with your family and friends. The possibilities are only limited by your budget and your imagination.” The best advice she can give is to talk to a sales professional at WDC and allow them to guide you through the maze of possibilities. “At the end of the day, you will find the products that match your lifestyle at a price that fits your budget.” WDC Kitchen & Bath Center is located at 14349 White Sage Road in Moorpark and 30621 Canwood Street in Agoura Hills. For more information, call 888.487.2298 or visit WDCAppliances.com.

“Ordinary Joe” Considers Life’s Choices

32

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | A RTS + CULTURE

Who hasn’t imagined where life would have taken them if they had followed a different path? NBC’s “Ordinary Joe,” developed by Oak Park resident Garrett Lerner and his writing partner Russel Friend, explores this premise when Joe Kimbreau (James Wolk) is presented with three choices on the day of his college graduation. His decision might seem minor, but there are consequences. Taking place 10 years later, each episode weaves together Joe’s alternative worlds based on the choice he had made, leading him to different relationships and careers—as a nurse, police officer and rock star. Lerner and his wife, Kim, have lived in Oak Park for over 20 years, and it is where they raised their children, Lily, 19, and Zeke, 21. Zeke, who has type 2 spinal muscular atrophy, inspired one of the main characters. In all three iterations of his life, Joe’s 9-year-old son has SMA and is portrayed by John Gluck, 13, who has Collagen VI muscular dystrophy. The series creator, Matt Reeves, encouraged Lerner and Friend to make the show personal to them. They directed their writers to do the same—to “bleed on the page” and to share their most vulnerable experiences. “Writing the truth is what makes the stories compelling and real,” Lerner says, noting that from the beginning, he and Friend knew that Joe would have a son in at least one possible life. “It felt like a great way to personalize the story by making Joe a special-needs parent who is closely bonded to his son—just like Zeke and I are in real life,” he says. Lerner has included characters with SMA before in shows he produced, once on the series “House” and once on “Boston Public.” “This was the first time I insisted on authentic casting,” he says. A nationwide search was conducted through organizations like CureSMA (a nonprofit the Lerners are involved with), the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and Laughing at My Nightmare. “We received scores of submissions and John Gluck quickly rose to the top,” Lerner says. Gluck wasn’t a professional actor, but Lerner describes him as a natural. “He’s smart, funny, warm and his ability to think on his feet and ad lib when necessary is still shocking, given his young age. And his singing voice is so moving!” (The duets with Gluck and Wolk, who also does his own vocals, are among the show’s highlights.) Zeke says he appreciates having the son played by someone who has muscular dystrophy. “I think it will give more opportunity for others who have diseases like SMA to get a platform on TV and film,” he says. Because of the multiple timelines, Joe’s son has different names depending on who raised him: Chris, Lucas and—Zeke. “I definitely had to get permission from my son before naming one of the three Zeke,” Lerner says with a smile. “Ordinary Joe” has been praised for changing the way people with disabilities are depicted on screen and was recently awarded the Seal of Authentic Representation from the Ruderman Family Foundation. For example, the show features real equipment used by disabled people. Gluck, for instance, uses his own mechanized chair. One storyline, taken directly from Lerner’s life, had Joe planning a romantic weekend getaway with his wife. But she’s concerned about leaving their son. Joe’s mother volunteers to take over his care. CONTINUED > AP R I L 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/C ON E J OVA L L E Y

“We realistically portrayed what that means—how to use a lift to transfer a disabled person from their chair to the bed or the bathtub,” he explains. “It’s all very matter-of-fact; just the reality of living life as or with a disabled person.” The series doesn’t shy away from portraying the routine of caring for someone with SMA and does it without making it a big deal. In one scene, the focus is on Joe and Chris’ conversation about the boy’s day at school. While they’re talking, Joe takes off his son’s shoes and leg braces. “Just doing everyday tasks like helping his son get ready for bed,” Lerner says, noting that while he was aware he was qualified to write about parenting a disabled person, he knew he would need someone with firsthand knowledge to help the writers present Joe’s son in a positive and accurate way. Lerner and Friend hired disability advocates and YouTubers, Shane Burcaw, who has SMA, and his wife, Hannah, as consultants. Lerner says he read Burcaw’s wonderful book, Laughing at My Nightmare, in 2015 and was so moved and impressed with the writing, he reached out to him. They’ve been friends ever since. “Shane provides stories from his own life, reads the scripts and makes suggestions so our writers don’t fall back on common tropes that are at best cliché and at worst offensive,” he says. One of the obstacles the “Ordinary Joe” team faced from the outset was how to help audiences differentiate between Joe’s three lives. Changes in costumes, hairstyles and facial hair provide visual cues. Additionally, the talented actors, led by Wolk, subtly shift how they portray their characters, depending on which universe is featured. Lerner says James Wolk had already shown his versatility as an actor. “We loved how he radiates warmth and kindness but could turn on a dime and deliver a sinister performance in HBO’s ‘The

34

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | A RTS + CULTURE

Watchmen’,” he says. “We knew early on he was our Joe, even before we realized he was also a talented singer!” The show also clues-in viewers by color-coding each timeline with a light filter: green for Nurse Joe, blue for Cop Joe and orange for Rocker Joe. Filming during the pandemic presented its own challenges. Only one day after they began shooting the pilot in March 2020, the production was shut down. Eight months later when they resumed, not only did they have to build a new production team, they also had to follow strict COVID protocols, such as quarantining after travel, taking PCR tests three times a week, wearing masks and shields (making communication difficult) and isolating the actors. “We had to get used to the new reality of Zoom meeting rooms, virtual editing and sound mixing, and no gatherings for premiere or wrap parties,” Lerner recalls. Despite the difficulties, Lerner says “Ordinary Joe” has been a labor of love for all involved and has been his most personal writing yet. He hopes audiences continue to watch because they love the characters, but also because “they see their own lives reflected and reflect on how delicate our life paths are—how timing, other people's actions and the decisions we all make add up to write our own life stories.” Has Lerner ever wondered about his own “road not taken?” “The point of the show is to illustrate every possible path in life is filled with highs and lows. There’s no right or wrong path,” he says. “I don’t believe in regrets. It’s a waste of mental energy. As Joe says at the end of the first episode, ‘It’s only natural to wonder what if but I’ve learned it’s more important to ask what’s next?’” Season 1 of “Ordinary Joe” is available on On Demand (NBC) and to stream on Hulu and Peacock. While other manufacturers may be well known, Summer Classics is built to a higher standard and is more comfortable than anything on the market. All of Summer Classics’ teak furniture is made with marine-grade, sustainably harvested teak and is available in two finishes: natural and a pre-weathered, low-maintenance finish called Oyster. Center-cut from the heartwood of Indonesian Teak, this is the finest teak in the world, performing flawlessly even in marine environments. Well-constructed from premium materials, that’s the mantra of Summer Classics that continues with their gorgeous resin wicker and aluminum furniture as well. Summer Classics’ resin wicker is constructed from virgin resin that is wrapped around a steel frame and crafted using the most extensive UV protocol in the industry. This is furniture that will stand the test of time. From the gorgeous striations on the Rustic woven collection to the jaw-dropping realism of the resin wicker on the Montauk and Montecito collections, not only is this the best looking wicker furniture on the market, but also the most durable. Lightweight, durable and zero maintenance are all attributes that have made aluminum a popular outdoor furniture material. Summer Classics’ wrought aluminum is made from heavy gauge aluminum, features 360-degree, hand-brushed welded joints and is painted with automotive-grade paint for maximum durability. Available in a multitude of colors, this

sturdy furniture often features a brushed pattern that mimics wood grain. Like the resin wicker and teak collections, Summer Classics’ aluminum furniture is a cut above the rest. Summer Classics is that rare, luxury outdoor furniture line that hits every note. It is stylish and sophisticated, as luxurious as indoor furniture and built to last. With more than 20 collections represented, Aldik Home features the finest showcase of Summer Classics furniture in the country. If you’re looking to turn your outdoor space into the hottest new hangout, Aldik Home is proud to feature American Fyre Designs fire tables and bowls with a gorgeous collection made from durable GFRC. Beat the sweltering summer heat under the gorgeous canopy of a Treasure Garden cantilever umbrella. With 360-degree rotation, front to back and side to side tilting, and gorgeous fabric options, it’s easy to see why craftsmanship, beauty and ease of operation sets Treasure Garden apart from other umbrella manufacturers. Fireside Chats CREATE PLACES TO GATHER INSIDE & OUT WITH THOUSAND OAKS FIRESIDE ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI

Whether you’re looking for a fireplace, a fire pit or a charcoal or gas barbecue grill, Thousand Oaks Fireside in Thousand Oaks will not only have what you need, but they’ll also have the highest quality brands in stock. “We're known as a luxury store, so we sell highend products,” says Manager Tom Malinowski. As soon as you walk into the store, you’ll experience the exceptional customer service in which they’ve become known for over the past 11 years in business. “We're not out to sell our customers something that we want to sell them,” he says. “We want to hear what their needs are, and one of the first questions we ask is what they want to burn—gas or wood—or if they even want an electric fireplace. We then delve into what size and shape they need and find out if they’re trying to heat a space or they're just using it for decoration. We then pare it down to what their best choice would be.” He and his team feel that every customer is important, whether they’re buying a small tool set or creating a $50,000 barbecue island. “We have a very good reputation and get a lot of repeat and referral business.” With most people gravitating away from wood-burning fireplaces because of the mess and the smell, gas fireplaces have drastically increased in popularity over the years. But, he says, there are always those diehards who love the crackle and pop and real wood smell, so they have the merchandise to cater to them too. The new hot and in-demand products are electric fireplaces. “If you want to add a fireplace in the bathroom or a bedroom, it's very easy to just cut a hole in the wall and put in an electric fireplace rather than running a chimney and doing major construction,” says Tom. The reason people love having fireplaces and fire pits, he says, is that they’re a way of

creating a space to gather. Indoors, it’s nice to sit around a fire and chat, while outside a fire pit or barbecue grill allows homeowners to create an outdoor entertainment space. “You're basically adding livable space to your house,” he says. Entire elaborate outdoor kitchens, he says, are more popular than ever, and Thousand Oaks Fireside often works with contractors and interior designers on higher end homes to provide pizza ovens, grills, refrigeration and more. “As we know, everybody gravitates towards the kitchen in a home and it’s the same outside,” says Tom. “They make everything for an outdoor kitchen today. We either work with contractors as far as sizing everything for the kitchen or we actually build the islands ourselves.” When many people think of a fireplace, they may picture a square or rectangular box, but many of the fireplaces you’ll find at Thousand Oaks Fireside are true works of art. “Fireplaces have gotten very decorative and the focus is not just on function anymore,” he says. “They have become part of the interior design of the home. They now have to blend in with the existing décor and even the outdoor kitchens and barbecue islands have to match the design of the house.” In addition to fireplaces, fireplace accessories and barbecue grills, the store also carries mailboxes. “We have a whole room full of mailboxes of different types and materials that people can choose from,” he says. Thousand Oaks Fireside is part of a three store chain that includes Encino Fireplace Shop in Encino and the Floyd S. Lee Fireplace & BBQ in Pasadena. To find out more about what they can offer for your home, visit ThousandOaksFireside.com.

Start With the Sofa Guy & End With a Home

As the owners of The Sofa Guy, Paul and Holly Trent have made it their mission to provide a long-lasting, extraordinary experience for clients in a warm, friendly and knowledgeable environment. “A sofa is the heart of a room, and we put our heart into everything we do—bridging the gap between an interior design firm and a furniture store,” says Paul Trent. Like a furniture store, “we have many pieces of quality furnishings for our clients to choose from,” he explains. As a design studio, “we creatively use our pieces to help our clients create a complete package of comfort and style for their home. We start with a sofa and end with a home.” Collaboration is also part of the process. “We love to guide our clients through a creative journey— discovering their ideal comfort level, style and fabric—which ultimately leads to determining the perfect size for the space,” he says. “The process can be as simple or complex as our clients want, but always fun, at least from our perspective.” For instance, some clients point to a sofa and say, “I want that.” “Others request house calls, detailed drawings, a large variety of fabric selections, cushion fillings…the fun stuff.” Currently, the most popular piece for clients is the cozy, comfy family room sectional that “promotes family unity, and allows for hours of binge watching their favorite shows.” The most popular service is “the old-fashioned house call.” “This service guarantees that any piece we make will actually fit the space,” Paul explains. “It also helps coordinate colors, gives us an understanding of our clients’ personal style and often leads to helping our clients complete the design of their space with rugs, coffee or end tables, lamps, artwork…which we offer through our TSG Interior Design program.” Flashback to 1996, when the Trent couple opened their first furniture store with a business partner in Venice Beach called

Philip Paul Designs. From the original store in Venice Beach, they changed their name to Welcome Home Interiors. “When we described what we do, people would say, ‘Oh the Sofa Guy!’” Holly Trent recalls. “Paul got that so often we finally gave in. We figured it’s simple, memorable and a little goofy; but then again, so is Paul. We embraced the moniker and today we are The Sofa Guy, Inc.” The Trent couple moved their business to Thousand Oaks in 2003. “I actually started out of my garage,” Paul remembers. “I would go to clients’ homes with fabrics and pictures, have my guys build the pieces and then personally deliver them in my pick-up truck.” Now located at 2520 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., “our showroom is intimate by design,” Paul emphasizes. “At 3,400 square feet, we are able to show plenty of variety without experiencing the big box store blues.” Additionally, “we have a team of designers and back of the house professionals that do not work on commission. That too is by design—I never want anyone to feel as if they are being ‘sold.’ We are about the project, the client’s needs, the most pleasant purchasing experience and amazing outcomes.” Looking back, “this business has been blessed beyond my dreams,” he adds. “I work with an amazing staff; our clients range from billionaires to bus drivers, and our projects range from reupholstering an outdoor seat cushion to designing and furnishing a 20,000-square-foot beach house.” Above all, “my prayer is that the generosity of spirit we receive is recycled back into our business, community and personal relationships.” The Sofa Guy is located at 2520 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd in Thousand Oaks. For more information, call 805.345.2631, email info@thesofaguy.com or visit TheSofaGuy.com.

Mosher Design Co. Creates Award-Winning Outd oor Spaces

There’s no place like home—especially after Matt Mosher and the talented team at Mosher Design Co. work their magic to transform the surrounding property into a wonderland you’ll never want to leave. Specializing in creating highly unique and sophisticated outdoor environments, Mosher Design Co. takes pride in ensuring every project reflects their client’s individual sense of style and enhances the living environment. “We focus only on custom residential outdoor architecture,” says Mosher, who started his company 22 years ago and is still going strong. “When I was 17, I decided I wanted to start a landscape business,” explains Mosher, who knocked on doors armed with flyers about his services and featuring pictures of his parents’ backyard to showcase his skills. “Pretty quickly I got a couple small projects and ended up doing several more that summer,” says Mosher, adding that he got a big break in his second year of business. “I had put flyers in mailboxes and got a call from the house manager for a famous author. He wanted a large waterfall built on his small lake. Although I had no clue what I was doing, I provided a bid and got the project,” says Mosher. “After agreeing on the

design, I spent the summer building the waterfall. In the end, the waterfall won numerous awards for its beauty.” This self-starter never looked back and continued to develop his skills and expand his portfolio of projects to include larger and more elaborate designs. Today, Mosher Design Co. serves clients across the nation, creating customized outdoor living spaces where family and friends can gather and build memories for years to come. And while Mosher has moved “out of the field” to focus 100% on outdoor space design and landscape architecture, his work ethic has not changed. “I strive every day to get better,” says Mosher. “Learning and perfecting your skills never ends.” Working with the team of experienced professionals that comprise Mosher Design Co., Mosher thrives on exceeding clients’ expectations. “Meeting incredibly interesting clients who push us to use our imagination to create them an amazing outdoor environment,” keeps him motivated and inspired to build beautiful spaces that invite relaxation and enjoyment at home. The Art of the Smile

ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Going to the dentist can be anxiety-provoking for some people, and that’s why the team at Newbury Park Dental Arts focuses on making sure their patients feel at ease from the moment they walk in the door. And, by the time they leave, they know they’ve received the best care possible. “We make our patients feel comfortable and relaxed, as if they’re catching up with old friends,” says dentist, Dr. Cristina Markiewicz. “We then take a comprehensive look at how we can improve not just their oral health, but their overall health and confidence. Having a confident smile is a very powerful thing that can affect how you show up in your professional and personal relationships every single day.” One of Dr. Cristina’s talents is building confidence within her patients by helping them obtain the smile of their dreams. Her focus is to give them both a beautiful and functional smile, so she carefully listens to her patients to find out what problems, sensitivities and concerns they may have and then formulates individualized plans to get their entire mouth, from teeth to gums, healthy. One way she does this is by making sure teeth are aligned properly, and Newbury Park Dental Arts is actually a preferred provider for Invisalign®. “Getting started can be as simple as getting scanned and seeing a simulation of what your teeth can look like when aligned,” she says. “We help patients every day with aligning their teeth in a position to help with crowding, spacing, misshapen teeth and mal-opposed bites.” Her practice also offers dental implants, bonding, crowns, veneers, root canals, sedation dentistry and more, including Zoom In Office Whitening which lightens and brightens smiles. From general dentistry to cosmetic dentistry, all patients’ needs are covered. In addition, Dr. Cristina has extensive training in neuromuscular dentistry and often helps patients suffering from TMJ (temporomandibular joint) issues as well as sleep apnea. She and her team are always at the forefront of any new dental advances, and in addition to a wide range of treatment solutions, patients are also ensured that they’re getting access to the latest and best dental technology. Newbury Park Dental Arts is equipped with state-of-the-art technology including but not limited to CBCT 3D X-ray, iTero Element Scanning, MLS therapeutic laser, BioPak Electromyography and Jaw Tracking, Digital Bite Programming and intraoral imaging. Dr. Cristina takes time to review photos, X-rays and scans with each of her patients so they can see exactly why treatment is recommended and builds a plan to keep her patients healthy in the most minimally invasive way possible. She is an expert when it comes to cosmetic dentistry and improving the look, shape and feel of her

patients’ teeth. Patients travel from other countries and states just to be treated by her! During each dental exam, she checks for cavities and risks of cavities in the future, gum disease and risk of gum disease in the future, airway issues, and TMJ issues, as well as for signs of oral, head and neck cancers. Dr. Cristina and her entire team are dedicated to providing patients with the very best dental care available in a professional, courteous and efficient manner from the beginning of their appointments to the very end. So, even if your teeth and gums look and feel fine, don’t put off making an appointment for an overall oral checkup. “The longer something goes without maintenance, the more expensive, inconvenient and time-consuming a fix will be,” she says. “Maintaining your oral health is similar to maintaining your car.” Learn more at NewburyParkDentalArts.com.

5 OUTDOOR LIVING FEATURES THAT Enhance Your Property & Lifestyle ARTICLE BY KRISTINA JONES | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

For many of us, our home has become a multifunctional dwelling. With COVID restrictions and changes in the work-from-home lifestyle, a home now serves as an office, daycare, park with recreation, entertainment domain and staycation resort, if possible. As a designer, I’m frequently asked, “How do we make our backyard more usable and at the same time beautiful, like a resort?” Here, we outline the top five elements that turn your outdoor living space from average to resort you don’t want to leave.

1. OUTDOOR KITCHEN There’s a saying, “The kitchen is the heart of the home.” The same is true for an outdoor kitchen. An outdoor barbecue island with countertop space, perhaps an extended bar with seating, can be a place to gather and hang out. What makes an outdoor kitchen inviting is the layout in relationship to the rest of the outdoor dining area, the shade over the people sitting at the bar and the griller, and the ancillary that goes inside the structure. When we design an outdoor kitchen, we consider different kitchen layouts and sizes. Some homeowners like to entertain and gather around the island while cooking, and others prefer to have a catering experience sans bar and with long countertops to lay out the food and then gather around the dining table for conversations.

2. FIRE FEATURE Once the bellies are full with all the deliciousness cooked at the grill, the conversations can transition to a more relaxed setting by the fire. There’s something special about sitting by the fire, catching up on life and having meaningful, connecting conversations.

in the burning afternoon sun. There are varieties of pergola styles and materials, including modern or traditional looks, aluminum or wood, attached to the house or freestanding further in the backyard. All have their own charm and function that enhance the outdoor living experience.

4. WATER FEATURE There’s something comforting about the sound of running water. Since ancient times, it’s been a luxury to have a fountain or water feature in a home. Even though it’s more attainable today than hundreds of years ago, it is still a special element to have in a backyard entrance or inside a home. If your home is located near a noisy street, the running fountain brings the focus away from the street noise and delights the ear with the sound of soothing water. There is maintenance to consider when having a water feature or fountain, so we don’t recommend installing it next to a deciduous tree or shrubs. We want it to be a delight to have, not a nightmare to maintain. We also recommend getting a fountain or building a water feature with an autofill so that you never start the fountain without enough water in it, which will destroy the motor. Autofill is another item that will make your fountain easier to use and maintain.

5. OUTDOOR LIGHTING Once you have a beautifully laid out garden, outdoor living space or front entrance, adding low-voltage LED lights is like the cherry on top. Well, it’s more than that. Not only will your outdoor living space look more dramatic and beautiful, but you’ll be able to enjoy it after dark. It will also feel much safer because you’ll be able to see what goes on in every corner of your property.

3. PERGOLA When you really want to make your outside living space feel like a room, adding a pergola does the trick. A pergola provides shade and cools the inside of the house if your windows get direct sunlight

Home Sweet Home Fall in love with your home and yard all over again. Just like with everything in life, sometimes we need to take a fresh look at our homes. After many of us have been isolated or just staying in our private spaces, we are either so tired of our spaces or so thankful for them. I've had the luxury of having my beautiful home here and purchasing another home in Arizona. I purposely decorated them differently, as to have a new feeling. Isn't that what we are all wanting? Here are some easy tips for getting that regenerated look and feeling.

1. DECLUTTER. Start by decluttering your home, room by room. If you feel anxious about it, take a picture or gift someone something by donating or sharing your golden nuggets that you’ve collected. Ask yourself: Do I use this? Do I like it? Do I need it?

2. ELIMINATE. Look at your home and remove anything that doesn’t bring you that happy feeling—faded pillows, furniture, bedding, lighting, paint color and so on. A fresh coat of paint does wonders; just remember, once you do one wall, it’s contagious and you’ll have to continue. It’s so worth it!!

3. UPGRADE. How can I make my house look more expensive? You’ve heard of the saying, “Dress for Success”—the same goes for our home and you can mix expensive with not so pricey and still give it that pop. For inspiration, collect pictures of things you love and match the look. A little bit of bling goes a long way, if you're into that.

4. GARDEN. How do I make my garden look fancy? Less is more in most cases. Keep it neat and clean so it's easy to maintain and easy on the eyes. Add a few potted plants for flowers or fruits and veggies that you can enjoy and that are so good for you. Knowing they are fresh out of your garden is a treat in itself; it’s like “Eating off your land.” A nice table or chairs with a fire pit can really dress up a yard, and if you don't have the room for that, a simple bench or swing will add a great touch. Make your space your castle, so it feels not only functional, but inviting. This will make all the difference in the world.
