LIFESTYLE LETTER

Thoughts for March 2022

March 2022 PUBLISHER S

Ben Malkin | Ben.Malkin@citylifestyle.com Robin Chesler | Robin.Chesler@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Anytime that there is a community-wide emergency or disaster, individuals and families dealing with economic shortfalls and health challenges suffer the most. It may be bad enough during what could be considered “normal times,” but after almost two years of pandemic-induced displacement, things could easily slide from challenging to bad to awful. Nonprofits that support those in need play an indispensable role in mitigating the economic, health or hunger pain and suffering of individuals and families most in need. There are other roles that nonprofits play. When budgets are cut, very often the first thing to go is anything related to the arts. Mistakenly the arts are often not thought of as “critical,” so they are the first to go without any thought given to what the arts mean to our quality of life. Music instruction in our schools, art projects, creative writing programs, dance companies, stage companies and many others can end up cutting back or going under. The funding to keep all of this from coming apart comes in good part from the generosity (money and time spent) of those in our communities who have the resources to be very generous and also often from those in the middle who simply have the compassion to share in part from what they do have. Our communities are rich in generous people. In this issue we celebrate many of our generous philanthropists. Often when we think of philanthropy, we think in terms of old inherited wealth…individual or from foundations. What we have locally are people who very often built their own success and now have the vision, generosity and compassion to share it. Moving on to what is still a timely topic, essentially, “Are we there yet?” As I write this at the end of January, the answer is no. The highly contagious Omicron variant of the Covid-19 virus turned everything on its head. From happily and carefully venturing forth and going to restaurants, traveling to wine country and live events, we went backwards. Robin and I again have a healthy dose of cabin fever and every report of infections dropping is met with some degree of skepticism and a larger degree of hope. By the time you read this, we hope we are back in circulation.

Contributing to Community: Celebrating Local Philanthropists The Conejo Valley is home to numerous nonprofits that exist to improve and enrich our quality of life. Thankfully, generosity also lives in the Conejo, in the form of local philanthropists who support

Organizations Supported: For the Troops, St. Jude’s, and the Ventura County Sheriffs Foundation There are so many deserving charities, but I am especially passionate about For The Troops, an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing deployed members of our armed forces with “We Care” packages containing necessities, snacks, games and, most of all, a show of support from home. Since its inception in 2005, For The Troops has grown substantially in volunteers and donors, annually distributing over 100,000 We Care packages annually to American troops who risk their lives around the world to thank them for their service and to demonstrate that we have not forgotten them. My passion for supporting St. Jude’s started when our close friends and neighbors Patrick and Cathy Warburton hosted their first annual Warburton Celebrity Golf Tournament in 2010—I am in awe of their accomplishments; through their efforts they have raised more than $17 million for this worthwhile charity. Patrick and Cathy educated me about the strides St. Jude’s made in finding cures and saving children from cancer and other deadly diseases. Through their involvement I had the opportunity to meet some of the kids and their parents who received lifesaving treatments at St. Jude. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, headed by our esteemed Sheriff Bill Ayub, is one of the best law enforcement agencies in the nation. It is our privilege and honor to assist the department by financially supporting many divisions and programs within the department through the Sheriffs. My husband and I are the proud contributors to the following programs funded by the Sheriff’s Foundation Criminal Justice Training Center: Equipment for K9 Unit, Crisis Intervention Team and the CIT State-of-the-Art Simulator. We are very proud that our son, Joe Markiewicz, is on the Sheriff’s Foundation Board of Directors.

Organization Supported: My Stuff Bags Foundation We choose to support Janeen and Bob, and the My Stuff Bags Foundation because they are a beacon of hope in our community. Being able to address the immediate physical and emotional needs of rescued children at such a critical moment in that young person’s journey is what the human spirit is about. We are just a helping hand on their mission to reduce the nearly 300,000 children each year who must enter the foster care system with nothing of their own. If you are a member of this community, look to support the amazing people around you that are changing lives every day.

Organization Supported: Shelter Hope Pet Shop The staff at Shelter Hope, and the work that they do, is nothing short of heroic. The organization has a special place in my heart because of what they provide for our community and for our four-legged friends. Shelter Hope is committed to letting us never forget the amazing role that animals play in our lives. Caring for pets is a blessing, as they truly make our lives complete. Sometimes I find myself looking at my two Yorkies, Precious and Prudence, and I remember that for all I do to take care of their needs, they give me back so much more in return. Every dog deserves a forever home, and Shelter Hope helps us get a little closer to that dream each and every day.

Keets & Hugh Cassar Organizations Supported: Senior Concerns, Casa Pacifica, Cancer Support Center, TOArts, New West Symphony and 5-Star Theatricals We believe in supporting those charities that are singular and unique to our community and county. Senior Concerns deals with the aging population in our community and assists the caretakers who many times find themselves in the position of caring for elderly parents, many of whom suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s. Senior Concerns provides a safe haven for the elderly, while providing some time off for their caretakers to return to their jobs or just have a break. Meals on Wheels is an integral part of their program. Hugh worked at Los Robles Hospital when it first opened in the late 60s and was instrumental in setting up the first Meals on Wheels program. Senior Concerns also provides legal advice and seminars to seniors needing assistance with paperwork on professional matters. Casa Pacifica has an amazing staff and administrators who work with disturbed adolescents and their families as well as juveniles placed in their campus housing program, many of whom do not have families or homes. We also donate to Cancer Support which has many varied programs for those cancer patients seeking help in dealing with their diagnosis. Cancer Support provides activities, meetings and various classes that promote health and well-being for their clients during their challenging journey as well as programs for the children of said family members. We also support the arts and TOArts at the BAPAC and are big fans of New West Symphony and 5-Star Theatricals. We donate to the Harmony Project which is under the umbrella of NW Symphony. The Harmony Project provides musical instruments, classes and teachers to underserved schools; ultimately producing polished musicians upon their graduation who continue their love of music as they matriculate on to high school. 5-Star Theatricals serves to give the community fun experiences plus a love for the theater.

Adults and children both benefit from viewing live productions given by talented performers. The arts provide food and challenges for the soul and are as essential as breath itself. The above organizations take care of both the young and the old and that is what makes our community so special.

Organizations Supported: Senior Concerns, Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Conejo Valley, New West Symphony, Casa Pacifica, Safe Passage, Hospice of the Conejo, and Cancer Support Community, among others. All seven of the local charities we support are doing important work and providing vital services in the community, and we are proud to offer our support to each one. However, when we started to look at local charities to support on a long-term, more major basis, we chose to focus most of our giving on two charities where we felt we could have the greatest impact. Our good friend, Joanie Young, recommended Senior Concerns. We had both turned to Senior Concerns for support and guidance as we cared for aging parents with dementia, and we knew Senior Concerns would become more and more critical

based on future age expectations in our area. Their programs, including Meals on Wheels, the Adult Day Program, and Caregiver Support, are all vital to the senior community. The impact they’ve made these past two years during the pandemic is tremendous, as they worked to keep seniors safe and healthy. Another good friend, Cal Johnston, was just starting the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Conejo Valley when we got involved. We feel their mission to enhance the lives of young people and their families by providing a positive environment that cultivates academic success, healthy lifestyles, good character and citizenship is so important for the youth of this area. When we started to support the Boys and Girls Clubs, they only had one club. Today, there are nine clubs throughout the Conejo Valley and Calabasas making a positive difference in the lives of children.

Barbara Ito Organization Supported: Casa Pacifica Centers for Children and Families Casa Pacifica Centers for Children and Families is very important to the very fabric of our community. The programs and services available strengthen and support not only children and families in crisis but extended family and friends. Because Casa Pacifica embraces and enriches the lives of our most vulnerable citizens, we are a better and stronger community. Bringing awareness and support to such a worthy organization is my mission and I embrace it wholeheartedly! I am grateful for the opportunity to give back to my community and serve those who need love and support through difficult times. As a member and the current President of the Casa Pacifica Angels, the fundraising events I have been involved with over the years have introduced me to the best and brightest that Ventura County has to offer. Our goal is that the children’s parties bring enjoyment and a sense of community to the families and youth of Casa Pacifica. I am humbled to be part of an ever-increasing and inspiring group of dedicated volunteers. I am also passionate about supporting Casa Pacifica financially, both through my business, Five Star Bookkeeping, and personally. The agency’s work is so important, and it is my pleasure to support their work in this way. The additional funds and in-kind gifts that have been generated support a loving and caring staff. I look forward to supporting and fostering interest and community involvement in Casa Pacifica, engaging in future fundraising activities, soliciting in-kind gifts and volunteer hours for programs.

George’s parents were old when he was born. His father was often mistaken for his grandfather and his father passed away when George was 14 years old. Having this relationship with his older father gave George insight into the ways, thoughts, passions and concerns of older people. That is why he is so passionate about Senior Concerns and why he started an elder care business. Patricia got involved with Senior Concerns at the urging of former Board Chair David Catlin. David believed that Patricia’s fundraising background and owning a senior care business would make her a good fit for the Board of Directors at Senior Concerns. Senior Concerns is an incredible organization. They have steadfastly kept the needs of seniors in the forefront for more than 45 years. The Meals on Wheels Program has grown from delivering 800 meals per week to 4,000 per week. The Adult Day Program helps keep seniors and family caregivers engaged in meaningful and productive ways. The financial and legal aid assistance is one-of-a-kind. The Conejo Valley, unlike many other communities, has invested in this valuable resource which cares for people in the fourth quarter of their lives. We cannot discard the elderly as useless and a burden. There is so much we can learn from them. Their stories and wisdom can enrich our own lives in ways we can’t imagine. All you have to do is listen, and that’s what Senior Concerns is doing.

We support VCCF because it helps connect and educate NFP Boards, ourselves, including our family members and peers, on how best to invest our donation dollars and serves as an important catalyst in working with the county and others with education scholarships, helping with the census count that returned many dollars to our community to name a few. We support the Rubicon and other art organizations, as they enrich our community culturally and help educate young people as well as help our area economically.

Celebrate Read Across America Day & National March Into Literacy Month ARTICLE BY KIMBERLY BLAKER

What better day to celebrate Read Across America Day than on March 2, the birthday of the beloved Dr. Seuss? It's the perfect kickoff to March's National March Into Literacy Month, both of which are dedicated to the promotion of reading and literacy. Read Across America Day was first introduced by the National Education Association in 1998. The NEA's goal for the celebration is to motivate kids to become lifelong readers, thereby improving student performance. Every year, schools, public libraries and other organizations celebrate this day by holding reading events for kids.

Visit the library. Think of the library as a big free educational toy store. Help your child choose some books but also encourage your child to look through shelves and select some on their own. Your child can also take home audiobooks, video games, videos and music CDs.

Encourage a Love of Reading There are many ways parents can promote a love of reading and encourage their kids to read not only during this celebration but year-round.

Play word games. Look for board, computer or phone games that help kids develop their reading and spelling skills and vocabulary.

Read to kids. Begin reading to your children when they’re very young. The NEA suggests infancy is a good time to start. As your child grows, encourage your child's participation in reading the story with or to you. Although your child may not be ready to read, kids often have some of their favorite books or pages memorized. By making your child an active participant, it will help develop their love for reading.

Help your child build a collection. One thing common among reading lovers is how much they enjoy having their own book collection. Help your child build a personal library of your child's favorite series, author or genre. Then give your child a special shelf to store and display the collection.

Sign up for Goodreads. Through this Android and iOS app, kids can track both the books they've read and those they want to read. They can also check out what their friends are reading. Subscribe your child to a magazine. There's a host of kids' magazines on the market and something for every age group. It will give your child something to look forward to each month and build enthusiasm for reading. CONTINUED > MAR CH 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/C ON E J OVA L L E Y

Read in front of your kids. Show kids that reading isn't just a school requirement, but rather a lifelong activity. Let them see you reading both to learn and for pleasure. Form a kids book club. If your child is interested in it, this is a great way to build excitement for reading. You'll want to find kids who are all about the same reading level. You'll need to decide where to hold the weekly or monthly meetings, which could be at your house, or perhaps your school or public library will provide you space. You might be able to advertise it through your child's school or public library as well. Set up a reading room or corner. Find a quiet distraction-free area in your home to designate as the reading area. It should have comfy seating, perhaps even a bean bag or two, pillows, blankets and good lighting.

Friends, neighbors and local elected officials are gearing up for the annual For The Troops Gala on March 5, 2022, at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. “I am proud to be chairing for the fifth year in a row, the For The Troops Gala to honor our military veterans. This year will fete those who served our great country in the Gulf War Era. I hope that the readers of this article will join us and see firsthand the good that For The Troops does for our service personnel,” says Rosemary Allison, Estate Director at Coldwell Banker and a featured philanthropist in this issue.

FOR THE TROOPS GAL A

Rosemary Allison and For The Troops Founder Paula Cornell and Program Chair Sandy Berg at the 2020 Gala

Aiming “to care, to share and make a difference,” Rosemary’s passion for life, for causes, for people and for our country is underscored by a deep commitment to excellence in all that she does, including her support of For The Troops. Founded by Paula Cornell of Santa Rosa Valley in 2005, For The Troops is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing deployed members of U.S. armed forces with “We Care” packages containing necessities, snacks, games and, most of all, a show of support from home. Thanks to the efforts of a dedicated cadre of volunteers and donors, the organization has distributed over 250,000 care packages to American troops who risk their lives around the world to thank them for their service and to demonstrate that we have not forgotten them. Among the 2022 Gala’s attendees are Supervisor Kelly Long, Thousand Oaks Councilwoman Claudia De La Pena, Thousand Oaks Mayor Pro Tem Ed Jones, Mayor of Moorpark Janice Parvin, Retired Congressman Elton Gallegly and Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub. “Our dear retired Sheriff Geoff Dean will be the auctioneer and Jeff Gorell, former State Legislator, former Deputy Mayor for the City of Los Angeles, and currently serving as a Captain in the Naval Reserve, a decorated veteran of the Global War on Terror and two tours in Afghanistan, will speak about what it meant to him to receive a For The Troops care package,” notes Rosemary. “Please help us honor our Gulf War Era Veterans as well as help us send more care packages to our most deserving deployed military service members.” Auction items include exquisite dinners, a Kobe Bryant-signed basketball and wonderful trips, including a Holland America cruise, a timeshare in Kauai, getaways to a home in Paso Robles and a week in a luxury Alpine Lake Tahoe home. Sponsorship opportunities are available for the 2022 and the 2023 Galas; to donate auction items for this worthwhile cause, contact Rosemary Allison at 805.479.7653 or rosemaryallison@aol. com. Volunteers are always appreciated to help pack boxes at the Simi Valley location. For more information, visit FortheTroops.org.

Dr. Carrie Hastings founded Sport Psychology in Westlake Village last fall in order to provide athletes with the mental fortitude needed for peak performance. As a former student athlete and licensed clinical and sport psychologist, she understands both personally and professionally how mindset impacts physical output. “I was on the track team at the University of Notre Dame and competed at a high level,” she says. “We didn’t have a sport psychologist and I don’t think it was even prioritized back then. I know I could have used one.” Dr. Carrie and her team of clinicians work with athletes at all levels from youth all the way to professional. For the past four years, she’s been the team psychologist for the Los Angeles Rams. “At the professional level, they’re starting to prioritize the mental, emotional and performance aspects and how those things combine to help you perform at your best. I wanted to provide this type of support for athletes of all ages and abilities.” Although there’s still a long way to go, she says the tide is changing to the point where it’s not as taboo to name what’s going on and seek help for it. “In the past, it was seen as a sign of weakness and now, rather than feeling you have to bury it or hide it, we’ve realized it’s better to recognize it and do something about it. There’s no shame in that,” she notes. Here, Dr. Carrie explains what her facility can do to assist athletes in reaching their goals.

ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI

Q. What do you and your clinicians offer? A. Sport Psychology offers one-on-one and group counseling, as well as workshops and guest speakers. The one-on-one structure is nice in providing a confidential space for athletes to develop relationships with their clinicians and feel that they can share anything. The group work is important because they can hear from their peers about potentially similar CONTINUED > MAR CH 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/C ON E J OVA L L E Y

struggles and not feel as alone or isolated. They can also learn how to put words to situations and articulate problems.

Q. What are some common psycho-emotional factors that create obstacles for athletes? A. The most common psycho-emotional factor I see with athletes is anxiety, and that often stems from issues within the sport, their level of ability or goals, and even their relationships. There are also issues that originate outside of the sport and get carried into the work of an athlete, so we work to cope with those and provide tools that they can incorporate into their sports regime to help regulate the anxiety. In addition to anxiety, I see depression as well as just general stress, so we help athletes manage those. We also assist with communication skills—how to effectively communicate with coaches, teammates and officials. Q. Tell us about your clinicians. A. We currently have 10 practitioners and they all have at minimum a master’s level education within the realm of sport, exercise and mental health or they’re in the process of getting that degree. We have some doctorate level practitioners as well. Our staff has a great range of experience and all were athletes themselves so they can relate to what our clients are experiencing. Q. Why did you start your own library inside of the facility? A. The Hastings Library of Sport Psychology was something I really wanted to provide because there still aren’t a lot of sport psychology resources available. So, I’m developing a collection where people can come and browse or check out a book. It’s a regular working library that anyone in the community can visit, buy a library card, and check out books. Q. Why is mindset sometimes even more important than skills when it comes to being successful in a sport? A. Skills are learned and it’s the physical exhibition of what you’re capable of doing. The mindset is crucial and often neglected because you don’t always see it in a tangible way like with physical skills. Mindset is so influential on performance, and whether it’s knowing how to help yourself cope with failure, loss or injury or how to build resilience—all of that is mental and those skills are just as important as physical techniques.

At Second Chance Hearing Center, Inc., patients literally do get a second chance at life. Having hearing challenges can often make people feel isolated and depressed, but when given the right treatment, connecting with others becomes much easier. Offering a wide range of services, the audiologists and doctoral externs at the center can assist with multiple aspects of hearing deficiencies. “We are unique,” says co-owner Dr. Alison Burks, Au.D. “We do more than handle age-related hearing loss and hearing aids. We complete many diagnostic hearing tests for physicians in the area for people who need pre- and post-surgical hearing tests, and we’re the only providers within Ventura County that work with cochlear implants.” Additionally, they incorporate vestibular, or balance, testing into their practice. “Most people in the aging population have balance issues, but it’s not always just age related,” she says. “It could be the balance organs within the ear system that are affected and some of these can be treated.” Here, Dr. Burks gives us more information about herself, hearing issues and her practices in Thousand Oaks and Oxnard, which she co-owns with Dr. Sharla Morales, Au.D. Q. What inspired you to become an audiologist? A. In high school, I was working as a cashier in a grocery store and trying to communicate with a deaf family. The only way they could communicate was through sign language, so I started taking sign-language classes. I planned to study deaf education, but during my college career I quickly discovered that I wanted the more medical aspect of hearing impairment. Also, my grandmother wore hearing aids my entire life and now my mother wears hearing aids, so there’s a genetic component in my family. Q. What are some of the latest advancements in hearing technology? A. Over the past five years, the advancements in technology have been dramatic. Hearing aids have gotten smaller and have become more sophisticated with Bluetooth® technology and wireless capabilities. However, I always say you can buy the best hearing aids on the market, but if you don’t have a great audiologist who knows how to program them, they’re going to end up in a drawer. It really

starts with the audiologist and our training on how to work with the technology. Q. Do you find younger people are coming in more and more? Why? A. Actually, hearing aid manufacturers are catering to a younger population because we’re seeing an industry shift to younger people receiving hearing aids. They need to hear well in order to work. They need to be able to communicate effectively in meetings and conferences and with other employees. Many 40- and 50-year-olds are now coming in for hearing aids when it used to be 60- and 70-year-olds. The 40-year-old has to compete and hear just as well as a 25- and 30-year-old. Q. What are some common myths about hearing devices? A. With hearing aids, there is a lot of marketing that is misleading. They’ll say hearing aids will give people 100% clarity like normal hearing, or they will not hear background noise when in a restaurant. But, just like with normal hearing, they’ll hear the noise, but learn how to filter speech from noise. Hearing aids are much better now in filtering but cannot eliminate noise unless fit with an accessory. Some of our patients complain that hearing aids don’t work. They are upset because they’ve already bought one or two sets that never worked. Again, it goes back to accurately fitting and programming. Often, we have them bring in their current hearing aids which just need to be reprogrammed to the correct prescription for their hearing loss. Another big myth has to do with cochlear implants. A lot of people think it involves brain surgery or it is major surgery. The surgery itself is typically about an hour-long outpatient procedure. Q. What do you find most rewarding about helping your patients improve their hearing? A. Getting a patient back to a good quality of life. Having them be able to communicate with whomever they want—friends, family, coworkers. When you give them hearing aids that are programmed correctly, they become a whole different person. To schedule a consultation or learn more about Second Chance Hearing, visit SecondChanceHearing.com or call 805.870.4498.

Explore & Refresh at Cabo’s Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Golf & Spa Resort

Not every Cabo resort is made the same (and we have stayed at many). What sets Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Golf & Spa Resort apart is its intimate location that is ideal for a romantic getaway or weekend trip with a group of close friends. Set at the tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula and about a 40-minute drive from the airport, the setting is an enchanting oasis of palm trees and desert flora situated on a secluded 1.2-mile stretch of creamy sand and pounding Pacific Ocean surf. After passing through several security stations to arrive at the luxurious adults-only compound, we came upon a tree dripping with hanging Mexican glass hearts (made from a local factory from the hotel’s recycled bottles), greeting us along with grandiose arches that perfectly frame the ocean view. After a welcome drink, my husband and I are escorted to the new VIP Whale Watching Lounge for sunset cocktails high above the ocean. Since Los Cabos is just a little over a 2-hour flight from Los Angeles, “Cabo” makes an easy destination for a long weekend or more. Currently, Americans need to show a negative Covid test one day before returning to the U.S., and the hotel arranges that right on site. As we make our way to our room, our assigned personal butler checks in with a text to ensure our needs are met. Dulce seems like the perfect name for this sweet lady who contacted us prior to arrival to ask about our preferences, from custom pillows to any special requests. Somehow she knew our favorite bottle of Mezcal, as 400 Conejos was waiting for us in our room with apple, tomato and lime slices and various salts. Part of a stay at The Towers is having this all-day butler service to provide anything your heart desires. It was hard to want to go to bed as the liquid black night sky cascaded with twinkly radiant stars thanks to less light pollution in this part of the world. Yet I didn’t want to sleep in and squander the limited winter sunlight; my yoga session the next morning began at 7 a.m. and my husband was off to golf at 6:30 on the resort’s 5-year-old Jack Nicklaus Signature Design Course. While racing to one of the beach beds may have been the first thing that crossed my mind, my early morning gentle meditative stretch yoga combined with the ocean air allowed all the airplane kinks and recent stressors to melt away. Three of us early risers had the entire beach to ourselves. The resort’s complimentary yoga began with calming oils and a bold reminder that all was right in the world as the sunrise rays streamed across the ocean’s horizon filtering through the clouds. The Quivira Golf Club has quickly established itself as one of the best new courses in the world, earning a well-deserved reputation for dramatic seaside vistas and challenging holes carved out of the cliffs and dangling over the ocean. Built on the tip of the Baja Peninsula with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean from virtually every hole, the dazzling 7,085-yard layout was voted to Golf Digest’s elite roster of the “World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses.” CONTINUED >

My post-yoga bliss was followed by my hilarious attempt to catch a fish from the beach, part of their Hook and Cook experience. In my case, the chefs on the beach satisfied my failure at 8:30 a.m. with their own fresh catch grilled with veggies, ceviche and guacamole. By noon my luck changed as I spotted a pod of whales offshore showcasing their blowhole sprays. The magnificent creatures jumped straight out of the ocean while one slapped its tail continuously like it was showing off for the panga boats. Witnessing the largest and oldest animals on Earth never grows tiresome. After a few dips in the circular pools to cool off my roasting pasty winter flesh, I relish in the alone time and head to the resort’s Armonia Spa for a massage where expert hands lull me into deep relaxation. After an hour of gratifying peace, I spend time melting in the eucalyptus steam room until I can’t take the heat anymore and then challenge myself to shock my system with the freezing cold plunge pool. In health circles, the ice plunge has become a trendy way to increase circulation, boost the immune system and help jolt metabolism. While I’m not sure if any of those are true benefits, I wanted to pretend I was Laird Hamilton and see how many minutes I could make it in the Arctic waters. After my body became numb and my mind took over counting the seconds, a few minutes was enough before I catapulted myself into the hot jacuzzi. Sipping a Mezcal fruit sorbet and devouring Mexican chocolates while a blazing red sunset melted into the ocean below at the end of the day reminded us once again how happy we were to be alive. After sunset we sidled into the fancy candlelit Mexican restaurant, LaFrida with sophisticated Frida Kahlo-inspired décor, satisfying our bellies with authentic delicacies like barbacoa, local fish and squash blossom soup. Guests have access to Pueblo Bonito’s sister properties, including the family friendly Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach next door and two more in the center of town (Pueblo Bonito Rose Resort & Spa

and Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos Beach Resort) located on Medano Beach where all the action is and within walking distance of downtown Cabo San Lucas. We tried breakfast at the resort’s Palomas Restaurant one morning beachside situated right in front of the famous Los Arcos. It’s the best time to go as there are less crowds and the cascading ethereal light illuminates the spectacular rock formations offshore. After a few days of relaxation, we gained a different perspective of Cabo by setting sail on an alluring cruise down the coast with Cabo-Adventures.com. This sailboat afforded us up-close views of the Land’s End Arch, Lover’s Beach, sea lion colonies, and Cabo’s famous jagged rock formations that erupt from the sea. While sipping a mimosa, we gaggled over properties of the rich and famous expertly carved into the coastal cliffs and marveled at the grand resorts from a sea-bound perspective. Whale sightings added to our incredible day on the water as the marine mammals gave us a show in the distance. For those itching to do more than just relax, the all-inclusive experience includes many fun options like tennis, corn hole, hiking with a guide, fitness sessions, Spanish lessons and classes like cooking and cocktail making. Ideal for destination weddings and private events, the property also features a luxury all-inclusive plan that includes not only Pacifica’s four restaurants, but also the restaurants at the three sister resorts nearby. Our last night included a dreamy private dinner set up on the beach with new friends and our toes in the sand. A server passed daiquiris as the starry sky stretched above us. After a multi-course meal, the revelry continued in the resort’s handmade sand firepit as my husband and I staked and toasted fat marshmallows to make S’mores. I envisioned us happily returning to Pueblo Bonito Pacifica with our closest friends and family.

Giving From Your Heart ARTICLE BY KIM PAGANO

These past few years have taught us many things, the biggest thing being cherishing our health and our loved ones. I’ve watched many of our organizations that not only depend on donations but also on the people that are served by these organizations. The struggle is real for families. Having our world shut down in so many areas has been difficult. The more we show appreciation, the more things appreciate. When life returns to “normal,” plan to donate as it’s going to take lots of time for them to recoup. As many of the organizations start to reopen, reach out to be a part of their events and see how you can support them. Have you ever been without? We need to understand how others feel. Food insecurity is real and is closer than you think. Being homeless can happen to any of us. Look at all of the support groups for cancer, foster children, AAA…the list goes on. We might feel stuck, but while we have all of those amenities, we sometimes forget to feel thankful.

T R E N D SE T T E R | A RTS + CULTURE

As we move into 2022 take a moment to give thanks for everything you have in your life. This has been the strangest year for so many of us and has been scary and full of uncertainty. Starting the morning with gratitude begins your day in a grateful way. Just take a moment to breathe in and share what you are thankful for, and the same before you go to sleep. Try to remember when you’re going through a difficult time to look at the brighter side of what it could be. Another thing I like to look for is the golden nuggets— sometimes we miss those. I believe they are meant for us to learn from, but we lose out if we don’t notice them. Today is your gift. Will you share it or hoard it? Either way, only what you do will matter. How you feel only matters to you. Share your gift of love today. There’ll be plenty more. Tune in to the Kim Pagano Show, the brighter side of life, on 1590 KVTA or stream Kim on KVTA.com and download her podcast. To share your story, email kim@kpshow.org.
