What Do Rosemary’s Clients Say?

“

“There is NO ONE like Rosemary!”

NO ONE knows real estate marketing like Rosemary... NO ONE sells like Rosemary... NO ONE advertises like Rosemary... NO ONE is connected to buyers and sellers like Rosemary! I’ve found it’s no secret that an essential quality of any successful business lies within its ability to not only forge new relationships, but to maintain and grow them as well, Rosemary has done that throughout her career. Rosemary Allison is the reminder that relationships matter, community service matters, her financial support of our neighborhood schools matter and being an advocate for her clients and their homes matters. There is NO OTHER REALTOR that you should call to represent you in selling your home. I could go on and on but I think you get the picture... Once we listed our home with Rosemary, she not only found our buyer within 2 weeks from her steller advertising, but her connections provided our buyer the lender who could help her purchase our home in less than 30 days. Rosemary Allison, we cannot “thank you and your team” enough for your professionalism in not only finding the right buyer but seeing each and every detail through to the end. Your work ethic and tenacity to get the job done was incredible. My family and I are forever indebted to you for seeing this through.

LIFESTYLE LETTER

Cheers to 2022!

January 2022 PUBLISHER S

Ben Malkin | Ben.Malkin@citylifestyle.com Robin Chesler | Robin.Chesler@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Let’s go into the New Year with our glass half full. As I write this letter in late November the emotional and economic roller coaster ride associated with the pandemic continues with a new variant. In spite of this, most of us eagerly embraced the Thanksgiving holiday and the chance it offered to connect with family and friends. Black Friday brick and mortar shopping has also been huge. Robin and I have enjoyed attending business events and seeing clients and associates we have not seen in person for the past 18 months. Phooey on Zoom meetings!!! Live entertainment and dining out is also rebounding. There is a constant that will make all of this reawakening continue. Vaccination. Masks. Adhering to safety protocols as much as possible. Every event we have attended has required proof of vax or a test within 72 hours. Without that stipulation we would not have gone. Nor would we have shared Thanksgiving with an unvaxxed relative. All of this comes with a caveat—nothing is 100%. However, I like our odds for health, wellness and safety a whole lot more this way. Our January issue has a focus on health and wellness—all kinds and a variety of approaches and solutions. An important part of our health and wellness message for 2022 is to prevent something before it happens. Don’t wait to treat high blood pressure or ailments caused by being overweight and out of shape. Change your lifestyle before your lifestyle takes years off of your life. Save your marriage and relationships before hormone imbalances turn you into a lump on the sofa. There really is such a thing as “anti-aging”…you may get older but you do not need to slide down the rabbit hole. You can be younger at 70 than some folks are at 55. As I said last month, I do not want to “live in interesting times.” However, I do prefer good times. We can all make that happen. Have fun in 2022. Be responsible and be safe for yourself and others.

DOCDUBEN.COM | 805.494.1339 Doctors Alan Duben and Lindsay Erickson use a combination of holistic therapies to help their patients reduce and control many symptoms. They aim to help patients understand what is causing their symptoms and find ways to address the issue in a holistic, natural manner. They understand that the three main influences on the body are structure, nutrition and emotions. The body’s structure is sensitive to injury and will be thrown out of balance if an injury or illness occurs that creates inflammation and pain. One of the most effective tools is nutrition. By eliminating foods that increase inflammation and adding whole food supplements, a person can begin the healing process and give the body the nutrients it needs to heal. Emotion is also another key component in the healing process. Doctors Duben and Erickson can help patients uncover emotional imbalances that can hamper the healing process.

Montecito Bank & Trust’s Community Dividends Benefits 179 Nonprofits The area’s oldest and largest locally owned community bank, Montecito Bank & Trust, awarded 179 local nonprofits a share of $1.2 million during its annual Community Dividends® Awards luncheon in November, continuing its tradition of investing in the communities it serves. Through its unique giving program, MB&T has granted more than $19 million to local Santa Barbara and Ventura County nonprofit organizations. Chairman & CEO Janet Garufis expressed gratitude for the work of nonprofit organizations. “Every year we give thanks for you, but this year we are especially grateful for you, for your staff and your boards and for your commitment to your missions. You did make a difference. You are making a difference,” noted Garufis. The nonprofit leaders were joined by the Bank’s board and leadership team, in addition to MB&T Associates who have dedicated the past 20 months to the MB&T Relief Center and were responsible for issuing Paycheck Protection Program loans to a vast majority of the nonprofits in the room.

“The lessons of the last 20 months inspire us to keep looking forward to what’s possible. We have learned a lot—about ourselves, our communities and how a business or an organization can adapt at critical moments, reinvent themselves and persevere through change,” said Garufis. Forty-six years ago Michael Towbes and a small group of local investors started Montecito Bank & Trust because they believed they could deliver exceptional and personalized customer service and fulfill the needs of the local community. When Towbes became the single shareholder and owner, the vision of investing a meaningful portion of the Bank’s profits back into the community took shape. Three years ago, Montecito Bank & Trust expanded the Community Dividends program to honor the late founder. The Michael Towbes Impact Dividend provides an organization or a couple of organizations with funding for a special program or activity or to extend something they had been working on or dreaming about that would create change that is lasting and impactful. The Impact Dividend honors Towbes and his desire to do more, give more and make an impact. The total amount of the annual Impact Dividend depends on the success of the Bank. Because of the Bank’s significant

growth this year, the Michael Towbes Impact Dividend went to two organizations: The Housing Trust Fund of Santa Barbara County, Inc. received $100,000 to support its new 3D Printed Affordable Home Project. The project is part of a new Housing Innovations Program to research and demonstrate innovative technologies that reduce the cost of constructing affordable housing and to encourage sustainability through the use of natural, climate resilient and fire-resistant building materials. Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics Bridge Clinic received $50,000 to support its collaboration with Cottage Health Systems to provide medical and behavioral health services to patients who have been diagnosed with a substance use disorder. The SBNC Bridge Clinic will increase access to treatment at a location close to Cottage Hospital’s Emergency Department. Community Dividends and the Michael Towbes Community Impact Dividend primarily focus on supporting organizations or programs that serve low- and moderate-income individuals and families in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. Dividends are awarded to organizations that serve youth and education, social services, medical and health services, and the arts. JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/C ONE J OVA L L E Y

Novus Anti-Aging Center: Healing Is an Inside Job

ARTICLE BY ALICIA DOYLE

38

T R E N D SE T T E R | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S

As the CEO and Owner of the Novus Anti-Aging Center, Stephanie Wolff believes in healing the body from within and wants people to take control of their own health—becoming “proactive” rather than “reactive.” “Medicine is good and serves a purpose when needed, but we have what is called sick care, not health care in the United States,” explains Wolff, who has been practicing medicine for nearly two decades. “People only go to the doctor when they are sick, never when they are preventing sickness—I hope to change this viewpoint,” she continues. “There is a saying I use in my practice—‘clean your side of the street’—and what I mean by that is do your part to maintain your health through proper hormone and peptide optimization, diet and exercise. You do just these small things and your body will continue to work like a racecar.” One of the most popular offerings at the Novus AntiAging Center is their Hormone Optimization Program and Regenerative Medicine Treatments, which include Peptides, Platelet Rich Plasma and Stem Cell Exosomes. “Most patients come into the clinic feeling stressed, depressed, lethargic and unclear as to why this is happening,” Wolff says. “They have done all of the things they know, such as diet and exercise; they’ve even had a visit with their primary care physicians but still cannot get to the root of their issues.” Wolff dives into their medical background and orders an extensive lab panel of which she educates patients on each individual test separately and explains why it’s important and why it fails, as well as how to fix it with either hormones, peptides or diet. “I create a personalized Hormone Custom Plan based on the labs, medical history and goals of each individual patient,” she explains, adding that most patients leave her clinic never having experienced such a visit. “They are fully educated and empowered to take control of healing their bodies from within rather than using ‘Band-aid fixes’ given to them by their primary care physicians,” she says. Above all, patients at the Novus Anti-Aging Center discover a new look at life through hormone optimization, peptide therapy and stem cell exosomes, and a personalized, hands-on experience. “There is not a one-size-fits-all in my mind,” Wolff emphasizes. “Everyone is unique and different and requires a customized plan based on their specific goals.” Wolff, whose background is in Family Practice, graduated in 2003 from Midwestern University with her Physician Assistant Certification, and it was during this time that she realized most of her patients were taking 10 or more medications and were still not feeling well.

“Their diabetes wasn’t controlled, their blood pressure wasn’t controlled, they weren’t sleeping, they had no energy and no sex drive—literally no will to live,” she remembers. “I knew the system was failing these people, so I decided to do something different.” Wolff began her journey into hormone optimization and regenerative medicine training with the American Academy of Anti-Aging (A4M) and started to work with these patients on getting them off of their medications and healing them from the inside out. “After a year of changing my methods, I had a waiting list of three months and none of the other physicians in my practice believed in what I was offering,” she recalls. It wasn’t until she went on vacation and left her patients behind when the practice realized the type of patients she was seeing and how “needy” they were. “When I returned to the practice, my primary physician pulled me aside and said, ‘We are not in the business of fixing people; if you fix them, they don’t come back and we don’t get paid’.” In that moment, “I decided I needed to leave this health care system and start my own practice, actually fixing people and being allowed to do so,” says Wolff. “I always wanted to help people as it is something that gives me joy and happiness as well as purpose.” It was then that Novus was birthed. “I knew that those patients would come to find me, those that wanted to be fixed rather than heavily medicated.” To this day, Wolff continuously researches and learns about the latest and greatest medical findings—not only for herself and her family, but for her patients as well. “I want to walk them through the process of healing their bodies from the inside out; I want them to live again,” she says. “This is what separates Novus from any other practice. We strive to make each and every patient feel like our family and want to help them achieve their health care goals.” Wolff is proud that the year 2022 marks the fifth anniversary of the Novus Anti-Aging Center. To celebrate this milestone, “We are offering a ‘Purchase a Stem Cell Exosome Treatment and get a second one free’ for the entire month of January. I believe in this therapy immensely and want others to experience the results that have literally transformed the lives of my patients in more ways than one.” The Novus Anti-Aging Center is located at 11650 Riverside Drive, Suite 11, in Studio City. Let’s begin by defining botulinum toxin. Everyone has heard of it—likely by its mainstream moniker, “Botox”—and its ability to temporarily reduce or eliminate facial fine lines and wrinkles. But that’s not all it does! In fact, botulinum toxin can be found as a treatment option in nearly all medical specialties and has been around for decades helping patients with a diverse set of conditions. Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxic protein produced by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. It works by preventing the nerve signals to the muscle in which it is injected, thereby weakening or paralyzing the site. Health care professionals use a specific serotype of the bacteria, botulinum toxin type A, for medical treatment. The common types of botulinum toxin available commercially include BOTOX®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau®. At Vascular Neurology of Southern California BOTOX® injections are offered for the treatment of several conditions: • Myofascial Pain Syndrome • Neck Pain • Temporomandibular Joint Disorder • Bruxism • Chronic Headache & Migraine BOTOX® injections, in treatment of the above conditions, temporarily relieve muscle tension, pain and spasms by blocking signals between the nerves and muscles. For sustained relief, repeat injections will be required. Prior to making any decisions regarding management of a condition, a consultation with an expert is advised to explore options and to better understand the potential risks and benefits of BOTOX® injections.

MYOFASCIAL PAIN SYNDROME Myofascial Pain Syndrome is a common and chronic pain disorder that affects muscles and fascia. This condition is specifically categorized by the presence of trigger points that cause referred pain. MPS may occur in areas such as the lower and upper back, the neck, shoulders, and chest. While most individuals experience some form of muscle tension throughout their lives, what separates MPS is its persistence and progressively debilitating nature. Myofascial pain syndrome does not resolve on its own and requires treatment for any meaningful relief.

NECK PAIN Neck pain is a prevalent medical condition among adults that can affect individuals of all ages. Neck pain can impact any of the bones, tissues or muscles responsible for range of motion. This condition can be chronic or acute and can limit or interfere with daily life. While most individuals may experience occasional stiffness or soreness in the neck, prolonged and worsening pain can indicate injury or illness and may require medical intervention. Unfortunately, there is not a single action plan that suits all patients suffering from myofascial pain syndrome or neck pain. Each individual will likely have their own unique set of circumstances that impact their experience. At VNSC, trigger point injections are offered as a treatment for MPS and neck pain. Injections of BOTOX®, steroids, anesthetic

or saline solution to the affected sites may be an option if other standard medical treatments have failed. Common sites of injections include neck, shoulders, back, arms, elbows, lower back, legs, calves and others.

TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT DISORDER Located on either side of the skull, the temporomandibular joints connect the lower jaw (mandible) to the temporal bone. Its primary function is to act as a hinge allowing the jaw to move to talk, chew and yawn. TMJ disorders may cause pain in the jaw joints and the surrounding muscles. The pain associated with TMJ disorders may travel through the face, jaw and neck, resulting in stiffness, limited range of movement and, in some cases, inflammation.

BRUXISM Teeth grinding is a relatively common behavior among adults and children. Occasional teeth grinding does not pose a health threat, however, when grinding or clenching occurs on a regular basis, this is a medical condition called bruxism. Bruxism can cause teeth to loosen, fracture or fall out. Patients only become aware of their bruxism when their condition demonstrates severe side effects or complications. In some patients, TMJ pain and bruxism resolve without medical intervention. However, should symptoms persist, worsen or interfere with daily activities, a physician will likely need to be involved. Depending on the cause and severity of the condition, physicians may offer medications, therapy, dental surgery or trigger point injections to the jaw of BOTOX® or possibly steroids.

CHRONIC HEADACHE & MIGRAINE Headaches are an exceptionally prevalent condition that impacts many individuals of all ages around the world. Headaches create unpleasant pain in and around the head, face and upper neck areas, ranging from a temporary nuisance to disabling pain for weeks at a time. Headaches are diverse and may vary in location, frequency, intensity and cause. Likely, if symptoms persist and interfere with daily life, an expert physician will need to be involved. Migraines are a type of headache that often develop on one side of the head and occur in stages. They often recur and may last anywhere from a few hours to days. Some patients incur warning symptoms prior to migraine onset. Because there is a wide and diverse spectrum of the migraine experience, it is difficult to pinpoint a universal treatment plan. Treatment options for management of headache and migraine are diverse and include nonpharmacological (i.e., meditation, stress management, acupuncture, etc.) methods, pharmacotherapy (i.e., abortive therapy or prophylactic therapy), or neuromodulation (devices meant to increase or decrease the activity or the nervous system). Schedule a consultation to discuss tailored treatment options at 805.242.4884 or info@vnsc.org. Visit VNSC.org to learn more.

Turning Tears into Triumph:

Stowell Learning Center Helps Students Reach Their Potential ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI

46

EDU CAT ION COR N E R | EDUCATI ON

Children who struggle in school often experience frustration, depression and low self-esteem, among other issues. Parents may blame themselves, the teachers and even the child for these academic deficiencies. But learning disabilities are no one’s fault, and there are ways to overcome these obstacles and allow children (and adults) to fulfill their potential. “I have always loved working with the population of students that fit under that learning disability umbrella,” says Jill Stowell, founder and executive director of Stowell Learning Centers. “These are bright, often creative and talented kids, but they struggle in some aspects of learning.” While teaching in the public school system, she felt these students were misunderstood. So, Jill left the public school arena and went in search of people who were doing research on the brain and attention and learning. She wanted to figure out how to correct these issues for students opposed to just having accommodations made for them. In order to put these findings into practice, she opened the first Stowell Learning Center in 1984. “We ended up with this really comprehensive set of skills that people need in order to function at their best and learn academically and socially,” says Jill. “And it’s all those underlying processing skills—auditory, sensory, visual, speed, reasoning, executive functions and motor skills. “We have to look at these underlying skills and build that foundation, and then we can remediate the reading, math, comprehension or whatever it is that the student is struggling with. They can then go on and be the highly functional, independent learners that they have the potential to be. Students actually develop the skills they need to process information more effectively and overcome their learning disability. We’re not just putting a Band-aid on it.” Stowell Learning Centers can now be found in Chino, Irvine, Pasadena and Thousand Oaks, and people aged 5 and up can take part in their programs. When a parent brings in a child to be assessed, the clinicians first speak with the parent about the child’s struggles. After that, the child is given a functional academic and learning skills evaluation. “We’re checking things all the way from retained primitive reflexes and motor skills to auditory and visual processing, processing speed, and logic and reasoning,” says Jill. “We’re looking

at what is going on that is keeping this child from performing at their potential.” After this, a tailored plan is created to develop the underlying skills that are weak and also to remediate the language or academic skills. The frequency and length of the program is then determined. For students who are not local, clinicians have the ability to work remotely with them. The staff at Stowell Learning Centers goes through a rigorous hiring and training process. “We want people who are very relational with kids, but who are also quick learners and flexible thinkers because we have to be able to adjust as we’re working with students based on how things are working for them,” says Jill. “We do a tremendous amount of training and a tremendous amount of ongoing oversight and coaching.” She and her husband, David Stowell, also provide weekly broadcasts that began when the COVID lockdown took effect. “We decided we had to have a way to reach out and support parents, and we connected with professionals who were working with this population of students. David is the producer of “LD Expert Live,” which can be found on their YouTube channel and Facebook page. Jill is also the author of At Wits End: A Parent’s Guide to Ending the Struggle, Tears and Turmoil of Learning Disabilities and a new book, Take the Stone out of the Shoe, set for release in April 2022. “It has practical guidelines for parents and teachers for supporting struggling learners, as well as an understanding of why these bright kids are struggling,” she says. “It also describes the programs used at Stowell Learning Center to permanently eliminate the challenges and the research behind them.” Jill wants people to really understand what they do in order to help more students. “We’re called a learning center and it’s a very generic name, but what we’re doing is so different from what almost anyone else is doing” she explains. “We’ve been at this for such a long time, and we’ve seen our students go on to get advanced degrees and become teachers, doctors, pharmacists and lawyers.” To learn more about how they can help, call 877.774.0444 or visit StowellCenter.com.

ARTICLE BY TRACY MARCYNZSYN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

America’s Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College residents include 4-year-old Bengal tigers, Neil and Karma. Arriving at the zoo as 50-pound cubs—Neil rescued from the pet trade and Karma gifted from an East Coast safari park—the tigers have flourished under the loving care of staff, including students, growing to a massive 375 and 275 pounds, respectively! Thanks to generous community support, Neil and Karma will soon be enjoying a new $3.5 million 4,000-square-foot sanctuary complete with a tiger tunnel connecting two large enclosures and a water feature where they can splash and play. “When completed, Rajah’s Retreat will be the embodiment of the dreams of our students, faculty and staff brought to life through the support of our community members and business partners,” said Moorpark College President Julius Sokenu at a recent groundbreaking ceremony commemorating the start of formal construction of Rajah’s Retreat Tiger Exhibit and Habitat. Following speaker remarks, guests held a “Golden Shovel” ceremony to acknowledge major gifts from Moorpark College and other donors, as well as the hundreds of contributions from the community who helped fulfill the long-awaited dream of building a retreat for the tigers. Special guests included Grammy-nominated performing artist John Ondrasik (“Five for Fighting”) and his wife Carla, who hosted a live outdoor “Concert for the Cats,” raising more than $50,000 for the tiger’s exhibit, which is expected to be completed in June 2022. Amador Whittle Architects in Agoura Hills designed the 8,700-square-foot development to be constructed by the Bedrock Group Inc., from La Canada Flintridge.

Active Health Chiropractic: Live Active, Stay Healthy ARTICLE BY ALICIA DOYLE

Active Health Chiropractic focuses on restoring structural changes to decrease pain, reinstating proper biomechanics to stabilize affected areas, and creating a therapeutic exercise program for each patient to help strengthen and reach optimum range of motion. “We achieve these goals by using manual manipulation and the newest physical therapy modalities, including the Phoenix Thera-Lase systems,” says Landon Poling, Doctor of Chiropractic and Owner of Active Health Chiropractic in Westlake Village. AT H LE T E LIF E | FITNESS

“The laser therapy is definitely the thing that people can’t find elsewhere,” says Dr. Poling, further emphasizing that he has a Pheonix Thera-Lase system in his office to help with pain management and cellular regeneration. “There are only four of these machines in the state of California as of right now. The combination of the laser therapy and chiropractic adjustment has been working wonders on people.” In other services, Active Health Chiropractic offers the following:

• Active Release Techniques® is the global leader in noninvasive soft-tissue and nerve treatment, including treatment of strains, sprains and other musculoskeletal disorders. Hands-on, movement-based ART treatment is specifically designed to quickly reduce pain and restore function by releasing muscles, ligaments, tendons and fascia that no longer function properly due to overuse or injury. • Therapeutic Cupping is a type of alternative therapy that originated in China. It involves placing cups on the skin to create suction which facilitates healing with blood flow. This may relieve muscle tension, which can improve overall blood flow and promote cell repair. It may also help form new connective tissues and create new blood vessels in the tissue. Mild bruising or other marks that may be acquired after the treatment usually diminish within 10 days of the session. • The Graston Technique is a form of manual therapy known as soft-tissue instrument-assisted mobilization. It is one of several manual therapy approaches that uses instruments with a specialized form of massage/scraping the skin gently. The therapy is designed to help the practitioner identify areas of restriction and attempt to break up scar tissue to reduce pain and increase function. • Therapeutic ultrasound is a treatment modality commonly used to provide deep heating to soft tissue structures in the body. Deep heating tendons, muscles or ligaments increases circulation to those tissues, which is thought to help the healing process. Increasing tissue temperature with ultrasound is also used to help decrease pain. • RockTape is a brand of kinesiotape, manufactured weaving a natural-hybrid fabric so it stretches in one direction and not the other. When applied over a stretched muscle, RockTape lifts the skin, accelerating blood

flow to increase the amount of oxygen available to the muscles, which reduces fatigue. • The Functional Movement Screen is a tool used to identify asymmetries which result in functional movement deficiencies. The FMS aims to identify imbalances in mobility and stability during seven fundamental movement patterns. These movement patterns are designed to provide observable performance of basic locomotor, manipulative and stabilizing movements by placing an individual in extreme positions where weaknesses and imbalances become noticeable if appropriate mobility and motor control is not utilized. Once these deficiencies have been identified through the FMS, a program of corrective exercises is then developed with the goal of preventing musculoskeletal injuries. These services can help people in many ways—especially in today’s challenging times. “The pandemic has been very stressful on a lot of people—it has forced people to stay home and create a sedentary lifestyle,” Dr. Poling adds. “Active Health Chiropractic offers the ability to decrease stress and improve overall function.” Above all, Dr. Poling is a firm believer in maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle, and hopes to influence his community and athletes of all ages to “Live Active. Stay Healthy.” “The ultimate goal of AHC is to serve as many people in the surrounding communities as possible,” he adds. “Providing relief from pain and to improve an individual’s overall health is our main priority. We also find it important to educate our patients in the importance of taking care of the human body and how to achieve that on a daily basis.” Active Health Chiropractic is located at 890 Hampshire Road in Suite E in Westlake Village. I nt ro duc i n g t he A l l -New 202 2

Mercedes AMG Roadster Even though much of the world's auto industry is rushing to make electrics, some are still making sure there's a memorable grand touring car, and that's Mercedes introducing an all new two-door SL. The first SLs go back to 1952 when they had super lightweight sports cars that gave the model its name: SL. The 2022 AMG Roadster boasts an all-new chassis under the car too. Meticulously developed by Mercedes-AMG, it consists of an aluminum space frame. The goal was high comfort, precise driving dynamics, optimal packaging and sporty body proportions.

Two things separate it from other SLs: (1) It is a 2+2 for the first time since 1989; and (2) It features a retro simple cloth convertible top rather than a complicated metal folding top common in recent years. Customers can choose from single or two-tone Nappa leather, elegant Nappa style leather with diamond stitching, or the sporty combination of Nappa leather and Dinamica Race microfiber with yellow or red topstitching. Inside, the 11.9-inch multimedia touchscreen dominates the lower section of the instrument panel. It's designed to be electrically adjustable to reduce glare when driving with the top down. Plus, it has four-wheel steering and all-wheel drive as standard, both firsts for the SL. AMG is the tuning company within Mercedes that makes the high-performance model, which also means it's quick! Oh, and if you must know, the top can retract in 15 seconds flat while driving! The base price will be roughly $115,000 with top-of-the-line models close to $160,000. Is it fast? Jawohl! The slower SL55 cranks out 469 hp and does 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, while the more powerful version of the same engine in the SL63 is good for 577 hp and a 0 to 60 time under 3.5 seconds. Both versions are automatics, using a 9-speed multi-clutch transmission. Arriving at dealers early this year! Wallace Wyss is a fine artist specializing in automotive art. LOCA L’S C H OICE | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S

While proper oral hygiene can keep teeth and gums healthy, it can also aid in achieving continued optimal health for the rest of the body. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, the connection between bacteria and plaque in the mouth and other health issues, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disorders and even cancer and Alzheimer’s, is becoming more recognized every day.

DIABETES People with diabetes are more susceptible to infections and, therefore, have a higher likelihood of periodontal disease. It’s actually considered a complication of diabetes, especially if blood sugar is uncontrolled.

CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE Studies have shown that the inflammation caused by periodontal disease may increase the risk of heart disease and stroke and exacerbate existing heart conditions.

RESPIRATORY DISEASE The bacteria associated with periodontal disease can lead to pneumonia and other respiratory illness when the bacteria are breathed into the lungs.

CANCER According to research studies, males with gum disease are 49% more likely to develop kidney cancer, 54% more likely to develop pancreatic cancer and 30% more likely to develop blood cancers.

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE Studies have shown that the bacteria produced by periodontal disease may actually be able to travel to the brain and contribute to the development and progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

PREVENTION Visiting a dental specialist regularly, along with proper home oral care, is critical in keeping periodontal disease at bay and also for maintaining teeth and gum health for the length of our lives. “Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease and as the disease progresses, that inflammation both destroys the periodontal attachment and eventually the bone holding the teeth in,” says Dr. Philip Shindler of Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Agoura Hills. “As the periodontal disease worsens, the bone loss worsens, and it also gets into the bloodstream and those inflammatory markers are what is being shown to cause the other associated problems. The plaque in our mouths is the accumulation of bacteria and

bacterial byproducts, and those bacteria are what cause inflammation which can then affect the lining of the blood vessels leading to the accumulation of plaque in the arteries and the heart.” When coming in for an initial cleaning at Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, the first plan of action is to check for periodontal disease by measuring the pocket depths between the tooth and the gum. The bigger the depth, the more advanced the disease. If a patient has no signs of periodontal disease, and is in good health, the teeth will be cleaned and the patient will be advised to maintain a twice a year cleaning regimen. However, if a patient has periodontal disease, a deep cleaning, which is done under a local anesthetic, will be scheduled. After that, they will set up a maintenance program which typically involves three cleanings a year, but can be four to six cleanings depending on the level of home care and body chemistry. “These cleanings are more involved and extensive than regular cleanings,” says Dr. Shindler. “We have to keep measuring because periodontal disease can come and go. People may have an active phase and a more quiescent phase and they have to be monitored. If we are not able to maintain them, at some point they may need a referral for more involved surgical care.” At home, he advises, patients should practice a combination of brushing, flossing, using a Waterpik® or similar device and prescribed molecular iodine rinses that can aid in controlling inflammation. If using over-the-counter rinses, he says you want to look for an alcohol-free product since alcohol dries out the mouth and can actually cause more issues such as plaque and tartar buildup. A native of South Africa, Dr. Shindler has been practicing medicine since 1981 and opened Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in 1987. He explains that he has spent thousands of hours in continued education courses and is always at the forefront of new techniques and equipment. “We have the technology, and we have the knowledge,” he says. “Everything is done at a high level. The big thing that patients understand about me is that I really enjoy dentistry.” The people on his staff, he adds, are also very dedicated and many have been with him for many years. With warm and caring personalities, the doctor and staff have built close relationships with patients and have treated generations of families. Family & Cosmetic Dentistry welcomes patients of all ages and always focuses on providing the best level of care available. For more information, visit PhilipShindlerDDS.com.

Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition

The Cold Plunge

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.”

58

G E T ACT IV E | FITN ESS

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.

Health Is Your Wealth: Be the Best Version of Yourself ARTICLE BY KIM PAGANO

We all know what that should mean, but with all of our knowledge, many of us still don’t eat right or take enough time for ourselves. We need to put ourselves on the top of the list before our cars or even our homes. Do you have health and wellness maintenance? We make a list or a plan for everything else. Let's start this year with a list of how we’re planning on keeping ourselves healthy—if you're not already doing that. Most of us know the basics to good health and wellness. Eat well; try to leave out the sugar and include lots of veggies and great healthy food. Sleep is another great thing; it gives our body time to refuel and recharge. Daily exercise is so important. Walking is like food for your bones and joints. There’s also getting our homes in order, so we have less stress. If you have a health problem, take care of it while it's small. Write things down, as doing so sends a bigger message to our brains. Make sure you’re reading, and even playing cards is good for your brain every day. So many of us really don’t think about this, but even the circle of friends we surround ourselves with can improve our outlook on how we see the world and help us to live in a positive way. Giving back actually has a very positive effect on us also; if you have not done it lately, you’ll appreciate the feeling, I’m sure. Your health is determined by the many moments that make up your day, so remind yourself to be kind to yourself and to actually nurture yourself. Start your day in a positive way, limiting yourself to only positive news until the moment you close your eyes, and end your night with being grateful for all you've experienced. Remember to do monthly check-ins, and if you have fallen behind, don't beat yourself up, just restart. Be mindful. Remember, we all have the same opportunity to be the best version of ourselves. Are you doing that for you? We all know the saying, “Put your own oxygen mask on first, so you can not only help yourself but others too.” Another one is “Fill your cup first so you can be the best version of yourself.” Happy New Year to the Best New You!
