As we wrap up the year, reflecting on the events, lessons and highlights of 2022 is apropos. The biggest takeaway for me personally from this year is the importance of living and loving life to the fullest. As our monthly columnist Kim Pagano urges us not to look back on our lives with regrets and to “Live every day as if it’s your last, celebrate every moment and learn from every hurdle,” that familiar saying, “You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone” comes to mind. Having lost several loved ones this year, I find this sentiment especially poignant. So, I’ve resolved to tell my family and friends how much they mean to me, make sure to spend quality time with them and hug them fully and tightly with both arms whenever we part. The holidays also present the perfect time to gather with those we cherish and to celebrate the return of favorite traditions that we’ve had to forgo in recent years, like the annual performance of “The Nutcracker” by the Pacific Festival Ballet, which returns to the stage this month! Pacific Festival Ballet: Twirling Across Town Once Again!

Tree-lighting ceremonies, holiday fairs and pop-up ice-skating rinks are all cherished memories in our community. We build each holiday season around family favorites and to have them disappear over the past few pandemic years has been disheartening for us all. Pacific Festival Ballet, as a dance community, has felt that loss as well. Not only were live theatre performances shut down for 20 months, but so were the numerous community outreach events that PFB engaged in every year. These festivals, street fairs and visits to retirement villages or fire stations allowed performers to step off the Civic Arts Plaza stage and pirouette into the hearts and streets of the Conejo Valley. Another missed moment are the children’s outreach performances that Pacific Festival Ballet produces twice a year. In partnership with Community Educational Entertainment, close to 5,000 children annually attend field trip performances to “The Nutcracker” and various spring ballets. “I love the response from an audience full of children,” says Artistic Director Kim Maselli. “They are so genuine and authentic with their reactions. Often our original ballets premiere to a children’s audience first. I know right away if the humor works, what they love and what they don’t!” Ballet Today, the outreach program of Pacific Festival Ballet, raises funds each year to provide a theatre experience for children or families in the community who may not have the means to purchase tickets for a ballet. “We do not want to limit our audience only to those who can afford a theatre ticket,” comments Michael Maselli, Executive Director. “We want to share the performing arts experience, and especially the ballet, with everyone.”

Meeting performers in costume has proven to be a magical moment, almost like meeting Disney characters face to face. Some children hide behind a parent while others rush up to the dancer for a big hug. Stepping out of the stage lights and into everyday settings brings the beauty of ballet into the crowds. People young and old are mesmerized seeing this art form up close and personal. “I felt like a real-life Cinderella when, after my performance of ‘Cinderella,’ I was greeted by a group of little girls all dressed up like me!” says Alexa Kernan, PFB ballerina. Organizations PFB has partnered with include Casa Pacifica, Support for the Kids, Boys & Girls Club, Safe Passages, Gabriel’s House, University Village, and Motion Picture and Television Retirement Community. This year as the pandemic tide slowly ebbed, we all breathed a sigh of relief. With the return to school, work, theatres and entertainment, life began to take on a normal flow. The final missing piece for Pacific Festival Ballet was the restart of Ballet Today. Community outreach and children’s field trips were the last to restore and that component of the company was greatly missed. With “The Nutcracker” 2022 season in pre-production, PFB re-engaged its outreach to see if student field trips were a consideration for the new school year. The immediate response was overwhelming and within six weeks “The Nutcracker” children’s outreach performance was sold out! “I was so thrilled to hear the appreciation and eagerness from so many teachers,” says Ramona Brandes, Director of Community Educational Entertainment. “To have 1,800 children back in the Kavli Theatre will be a treat for all of us! We had to quickly get the spring ballet of ‘The Sleeping Beauty’ on the calendar to accommodate the overflow!”

The first invitation was returning to perform segments of “The Nutcracker” at University Village. The next is a live preview performance at The Oaks Mall on December 11 at 2 p.m. and the third, a performing opportunity at the Westlake Rotary Club’s Holiday’s in the Village: A European Marketplace December 4 at 2 p.m. “Being able to engage with the community again feels like the missing piece of our puzzle,” says Maselli. “We

love our live theatre seasons as one of the resident companies at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center, but a part of our purpose is to step off of the stage and into our community. Needs Support

On behalf of children with special needs, PAUSE4kids shares the vision of being a positive, proactive force that helps the community gain information while educating parents and providing opportunities for collaboration. “PAUSE4kids was founded decades ago before the words autism, special needs and disabilities in education were household words familiar to all,” explains Kathy Greco, who has served on the volunteer board of directors for nearly two decades. “Originally the organization was formed because the local school districts were not adhering to laws and recognizing the rights of students with disabilities,” notes Greco, adding that the moniker stands for Parents & Professionals Against Unethical Special Education. Serving the community for more than 25 years, PAUSE4kids is a completely volunteer-based organization that provides parent education, advocacy assistance, community awareness and nonprofit collaboration. “One of the most unique and helpful services we provide are scholarships for things not covered by schools, insurance or regional centers,” Greco says. “No other organization provides direct scholarships, and as a board member, I make myself as available as possible for parent questions in between our monthly meetings.”

Scholarships are greatly needed and appreciated—as well as having a place to attend monthly discussions with other parents and gain an understanding of legal obligations and strategies. “It is beneficial to hear what has worked or been made available for others— neither school districts nor regional centers will ever give a menu list of available options,” Greco says. In addition to providing financial support to many families, “PAUSE4kids purchased an adaptive tricycle for Newbury Park High so many kids could benefit by having outdoor physical education.” PAUSE4kids was formed in September 1999 by Keri Bowers, a parent of an autistic son. “Keri Bowers was the parent that got this train in motion—other parents got on board as well as a lawyer/child psychologist and other professionals,” Greco says. Eight parents attended the first meeting. “It was a small but mighty group with the tenacity to demand these students be given the benefits of their legal rights.” Today, PAUSE4kids serves hundreds of families in the Ventura County area, and the board is currently comprised of three parents and two professionals. The lawyer on the board, Terri Hilliard Olsen, provides her office as the headquarters.

“We are all volunteers—our expenses are basically phone, website and insurance, and we are always open to collaborative fundraising events,” Greco says. She notes that PAUSE4kids has gone to various organizations in the community to raise awareness and answer questions. For instance, “we were invited to speak at Calvary Community Church to the special-needs ministry…to talk about what our organization is and to answer questions that people may have about any of the subjects in which we are equipped to answer,” Greco says. “That is another way that we have tried to support our community by going out into the community to reach people.” One of the most popular things PAUSE4kids does—and has done for years—is host an end-of-the-school-year party for parents. “It’s usually 4- to 7-ish cocktails and food at a local restaurant,” Greco explains. “It’s a time for parents to come together and celebrate getting through another school year, which always takes a lot of effort for them. They can relax, talk and let go a little bit.” With COVID, “we have not been able to do this in the last couple of years, but parents have continually asked if we’re going to bring that back. It’s an event they truly, truly enjoy, and hopefully, by the

end of the school year we will bring in some money and be able to fund that time in an event together.” When COVID shutdowns first began and everything was out of sorts, “we could not scholarship in-person services.” Instead, “we did raffles twice weekly for months—the winning family would choose their dinner menu from Wood Ranch BBQ—and we would order, pay and deliver the food.” Unfortunately, at this particular time, “we are low on funds as we have been unable to host fundraising events during COVID, but we have continued to support our community,” Greco adds. “We always welcome donations and anyone interested in joining our efforts.” She further emphasizes that PAUSE4kids is especially important in today’s times “because it gives parents a place to go to feel connected to other parents. We provide easy access to information and support—and we have continually tried to build community collaboration and overall support the community at large.” PAUSE4kids is located at 600 Hampshire Road, Suite 211, in Westlake Village. I am sure that when BMW first started making SUVs they wondered, “Will this ruin BMW’s sporty image?” Well, they are well beyond that now, having sold hundreds of thousands of SUVs. And BMW’s all-new SUV for 2023 sets records for performance, price and its controversial styling. The new XM SUV is not a full electric, but a hybrid electric (called a PHEV) that is a plug-in. The incredulous thing about it is the price: $159,995 before options! Another incredible aspect is the speed on tap—as fast as the famous Cobra of the ‘60s—0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds with a top speed of 175 mph! Perhaps the most mind-blowing detail about this model is its styling. If the Land Rover is restrained minimalist in design, the XM is bold and chunky. The headlights are slim and so are the taillights, while the big kidney grille is huge and right up there commanding the front view. Adding to the drama of the big mouth grille is its framed light rings at night. The XM is the first hybrid model from BMW to wear the M Badge, the M being their performance division, normally reserved for cars like the M3 and M5. While the electric motor helps its speed, don’t count on going too far on electric power alone—the XM goes 30 miles and that’s only if you start with a full battery. The ICE engine is a turbocharged V8, which, along with the electric motor, produces 644 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, moving it from 0 to 60 mph in a scant 4.1 seconds—this in a 6,000-lb. SUV! And if that’s not fast enough, there is another one coming, same body but more horsepower and a $185,000 price tag, called the Label Red model (an oblique reference toward Rolls’ Black Badge models). Who, pray tell, is BMW aiming at? Well, their XM is priced way above American SUVs and less than Ferrari’s Purosangue SUV at $400,000 and which is not a hybrid. BMW envisions their XM taking away sales from other high-end SUVs, such as the Audi RS Q8, Mercedes-AMG GLE63, Aston Martin DBX and Lamborghini Urus. The fact that BMW can offer an M in an SUV is astounding enough. We’ll have to see how that bold grille and overall blocky styling goes over—maybe it will influence all BMWs! Just like when movie stars of the ‘20s and ‘50s flocked to the area from Hollywood, Palm Springs continues to be Los Angeles’ favorite getaway. This little big town in the desert, flanked by the dramatic San Jacinto mountains and poking palm trees, provides a playful swanky, sun-drenched landscape just a 2-hour drive from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. Soak up the mid-century modern design, evident in homes and retail spaces left behind from the days when innovative architects built affordable vacation homes and post-war optimism bred indoor-outdoor living, proud colors, glass and concrete, deep overhangs and dramatic angular roofs. You can’t come to the desert without trying an old-school celeb haunt that has survived since the Rat Pack days. Located within the historic Ingleside Inn, Melvyn’s was the go-to spot for Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor and other Hollywood royalty back in the 50s. Order a Dirty Martini at the bar while glossing over the black and white photos of the who’s who of yesteryear. Request a song from the piano player and soak up the ambiance over a classic dinner of chicken pot pie, lobster risotto or steak Diane served tableside. For casual take-out food, there is no better option for lunch than Gabino’s Creperie where savory chicken-stuffed crispy crepes are prepared with zesty seasoning on the outside with choices like chicken pesto, ranch and barbecue. “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives” (Season 42, Episode 26) with Guy Fieri recently featured this window-serve alley nook with a few outdoor tables. One of our favorite places for brunch is the flower-laden outdoor restaurant The Farm with a Provencal-style menu serving traditional French dishes like sweet and savory crepes, specialty omelets, salads, sandwiches and brioche French toast. Start your weekend with a mimosa with freshly squeezed juice (watermelon, orange or grapefruit) and order Poulet a La Creme, a crepe loaded with chicken, mushrooms, herbs, creme fraiche and white wine. Also, the three-course prix fixe dinners with live music are a real value.

4 MEMORABLE DESERT EXPERIENCES In 10 minutes, zoom one and a half miles up to a pristine wilderness in the largest rotating aerial tram. As you elevate to 8,516 feet on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, you ascend past forest and steep mountain cliffs with sweeping views of Palm Springs and snow may greet you during certain times of the year. Extend your time by grabbing a bite at the newly renovated restaurant atop Mt. San Jacinto State Park or immerse yourself in nature on the 50 miles of hiking trails, but not before gawking at the views from the observation decks and the brand new $13-million Mountain Station design remodel that took three years and reflects the original architectural concept. Make sure to book tickets in advance. The former Annenberg estate, Sunnylands, in Rancho Mirage (just a short drive from Palm Springs) has welcomed presidents and royalty since the 1960s, thanks to publisher billionaire magnate Walter Annenberg, who created TV Guide, Seventeen Magazine, and one of the first TV stations out of Philadelphia. Most notable is the introductory 35-minute film showcasing the numerous presidents and celebs who brought the estate to life. Walk the wildflower field or Great Lawn gardens and marvel at the history of this former meeting place where often over golf or dinner major ideas were exchanged, and international relations and laws were sorted out and discussed. Admire more than 70 species of arid-adapted plants amongst twin reflecting pools filled with river stones and contemplate life on the Obama bench or while winding through a labyrinth. Yoga, bird walks and private tours of the home can be found online. Palm Springs Art Museum is an intimate treasure trove of innovative and forward-thinking art but also contains an outdoor sculpture garden, local bistro, lecture hall, theater and a 1,000-square-foot store. Reserve tickets online for free Thursday evenings. Don’t miss the surrounding area filled with whimsical art, such as a car suspended over a reflecting pool, the Marilyn Monroe statue and The Babies crawling in the courtyard from Czech Republic artist David Cerny. The Architecture and Design Center can be found down the road. For those who enjoy witnessing art installations in the desert environment of Coachella Valley, Desert X returns in 2023 from March through May. The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens located in Palm Desert is a desert botanical garden with over 500 animals that specializes in deserts of the world with a mission of desert conservation through preservation, education and appreciation. The Living Desert recently became a Certified Autism Center (CAC). The impressive landscape with thousands of acres affords animals wide open spaces. Feed giraffes and admire bighorn sheep, African wild dogs, black rhinos and other fascinating species. In the Australian habitat area, wallabies bounce alongside you in an open area. Arrive early in the day mid-week when it’s cooler and there are less crowds. During the holidays, WildLights transforms the setting into a winter wonderland.

2 UNBELIEVABLE HIKES While Greater Palm Springs is a mecca for golf and tennis, hiking in the desert terrain is an otherworldly option you won’t want to miss. Start with the 1.7-mile Tahquitz Canyon Loop Trail on the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation in Palm Springs. Scramble around smooth boulders, ancient irrigation systems and native plants while towering rock faces hug the trail and the valley floor sprawls in the distance. Come at the right time of year and find yourself staring at a surreal 60-foot waterfall. Indian Canyons, another nature preserve, offers numerous trails for hiking and horseback riding once you enter this sacred land. Start with the more aggressive 3-mile Victor Trail that scales up and around varying terrain, such as the impressive grove of

stately skirted palms, red barrel cacti and over 150 species of plants. An easier 1-mile loop on a flat trail at Andreas Canyon follows a stream by groves of California fan palms and feels more “jungle” than desert. A small waterfall toward the end of the loop is a welcome cool-off respite during warmer months.

Serving clients for almost 40 years, The Drapery Guy is an integral part of the business landscape in Westlake Village. Its repeat customers appreciate the personalized services, as well as its made-to-order merchandise, and many new patrons come through word of mouth. Owner Steve Eisenberg recently decided to change things up and has moved away from blinds and shutters to now focus exclusively on the fabric side of the industry. If you need drapes and Roman shades or reupholstering for indoor or outdoor furniture, he’s your guy! The wonderful thing about fabrics is they can change the entire look and feel of your rooms. Instead of buying all new furniture or having to repaint all the walls and ceilings, hanging new drapes and covering an old sofa, chairs, or a headboard can update and refresh even the most tired-looking living room, dining room or bedroom. “It can make a big impact in the look of your home,” he says. “It can really modernize and make it whatever you want. If you want to be bright and colorful or to have a clean look, with fabric it's easy to do, especially if you want to change up your style.” Something as simple as new pillows can brighten up a room and add some holiday cheer or seasonal colors, which you can pick up while waiting for your drapes to be made. Many people don’t realize all the choices that go into new draperies and having Steve as a guide takes much of the stress away. “Doing draperies can be overwhelming,” he says. “Most people say they didn't know there was so much involved. They need to pick the fabric style, color and the lining, whether regular, thermal or blackout, then the hardware, which can be wood or iron. We simplify things for them by not only supplying everything they need but by professionally installing it as well.” To assist with fabric choices, whether it be stripes, solids or prints, customers can pick a few samples, bring them home and hang them up. Afterward, they can choose the

style they like the most. Best of all, there's no charge for this. All of the fabrics Steve chooses are from the U.S.A. Nothing is coming from overseas, so it’s here and in stock. The shop also offers custom iron drapery rods. “If someone has a window arch, we can make a template and fit it to the window,” he says. “If they have a nice piece of iron hardware, they don't have to do fabric on top of the drapes like they used to. It’s not as heavy a look and it saves money on the fabric.” Simplicity is the name of the game today, he says. “People don't go overboard like they used to years ago. Now it's pretty much basic colors and more neutrals, and either panels on the side because they want to show the window or a center open drape on a nice piece of hardware.” Most clients, he explains, do one or possibly two rooms at a time. Many choose to start with the living room and dining room, since these rooms are usually close together, and the master bedroom. “We can then easily work our way around the house because most customers come back for repeat business.” Steve explains that, on average, people change their window coverings about every seven years. After that amount of time, homeowners get tired of looking at the same old thing. “They not only want it to look current and different but be at a price point that they can afford,” he says. “We focus on doing a great job and working with different budgets and styles. “That's what we've been doing for a long time, and that's how we get our business. Reputation and word of mouth— that's everything.” The Drapery Guy also has a high-end division run by his in-home designer, Patty. She caters to designers who specialize in luxury homes. Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

+ 1 box red velvet cake mix, plus ingredients called for on box + 2 (8-oz.) blocks cream cheese, softened + 1/2 cup powdered sugar + 2 tablespoon. heavy cream + 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1. Preheat oven to 350º and line a muffin pan with cupcake liners. Prepare red velvet cake batter according to box directions. Divide batter among liners and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 18 to 20 minutes. Let cool completely. Break 4 cupcakes into small crumbs. Save remaining cakes for another use. 2. In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat cream cheese and powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Add heavy cream and vanilla and beat until stiff peaks form. 3. Line a large baking sheet with parchment. Using a small cookie scoop, scoop cream cheese mixture into balls and place on prepared baking sheet. Transfer to the freezer to chill, 1 hour. 4. Roll balls in red velvet cake crumbs until fully coated, then return to prepared baking sheet. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
