DURING THESE PAST 15 MONTHS OF THE PANDEMIC, MANY OF US HAVE FACED UNPRECEDENTED REASONS FOR ANXIETY— AND OUR KIDS HAVE EXPERIENCED SCHOOL IN A WAY WE NEVER COULD HAVE IMAGINED. As things begin to open back up, it’s finally time to emerge from our homes and rejoin each other in society. For most kids this fall, that means entering a real classroom with peers and a teacher, and the unknowns of this can create anxiety. Here are three strategies to help you navigate the new normal with your child: 1. Model Calm. All kids—even teens—take cues from their parents about how to feel. Be mindful of what your words, body language and actions communicate. Imagine that you’re a flight attendant. During turbulence, the passengers look to see whether you are calm and confident. If you’re not, they might panic. Your child looks to you during times of emotional turbulence. Process your own fears with an appropriate adult rather than with your child. Ask yourself: Am I feeling anxious about sending my child back to school? What are my specific worries? How can I avoid transmitting my anxiety to my child? By resolving

Teachers have continued to grow and refine their pedagogy and particularly through this past school year, they looked at it as an opportunity for innovation and improvement in their practice, notes Marschner. “This is very important as we look to address students’ current learning needs in an ever-changing and shifting technological landscape,” Marschner adds. MAKE SNACKS AND MEALTIME FUN We all know that kids like to play and have fun, so why not make food fun? Whether you’re turning broccoli into a microphone at dinner, or playing tic-tac-toe with edible carrot sticks, kids get into it. DON’T GIVE UP Parents often assume that if a child doesn’t eat a food the first or second time it’s served, the child doesn’t like the food. Many children may need to see or taste a food 10 or 20 times before they are willing to eat it. FORCING HEALTHY FOODS ON KIDS OFTEN BACKFIRES Often, making a child eat food or eat a certain amount of food backfires. It may backfire in the short run by making a child more selective and less likely to eat the foods you want them to eat.

ARTICLE KIM PAGANO
We Are All Students CAN YOU REMEMBER WHEN YOU WERE VERY YOUNG AND YOU COULDN’T WAIT TO RETURN TO SCHOOL? With the pandemic this past year, so many kids have been robbed of their first or their last school year. Many did not have a traditional graduation. I was so impressed with the many creative ideas to celebrate the occasion virtually and in alternative ways. I think these will have a bigger impact than the traditional ways we have always done before. As the world starts to open, everyone is excited to return to school and to life. This year like no other time that I have known, we were asked to step up as a nation in so many ways, such as practicing isolation and distance learning. Parents, grandparents and anyone in your tribe had to pivot their businesses. We all have learned one thing for sure: to be resilient! We’ve enjoyed incredible parades for birthdays and graduations and even weddings without guests. And as sad as it was, some were forced to die alone with only their angels, nurse or doctor by their side. What did you or your family do to think out of the box during this past year of COVID-19 throughout the pandemic that you will remember forever? I think it’s a reminder that life is very precious, and as we continue to bounce back, we know we are not alone and we will get through this together! So, as we begin to build our passages of our new life as family, friends, neighbors and work acquaintances, let's not lose sight of the incredible force that we have grown as a nation and the valuable lessons of gratitude or blessings that we have learned, because in the big picture this is the real school—the school of life. Tune in to the Kim Pagano Radio Show every Saturday on KVTA and stream her on KVTA.com from 7 to 8 a.m. PST to start your day in a positive way!!
