We Are Almost There! (I hope) IF YOU ARE A PARENT AND HAVE TAKEN YOUR KIDS ON ANY KIND OF DRIVING TRIP, THEN THAT UNIVERSAL QUESTION EMANATING FROM THE BACK SEAT, “ARE WE THERE YET?” really resonates. In regard to the pandemic, “Are we there yet?” The answer is, “Probably. Maybe. Not quite. Yes. Almost. Who knows for sure?”

As restrictions ease up and life begins to return to something resembling “normal” we have much to celebrate in California and in our local communities. Schools will be reopening, restaurants and local businesses will flourish again, the Arts will return to live performances (Gads, no more Zoom performances!) and sporting events will be fully attended (no more NBA “bubbles”). We can dine out and not have to sit in a plastic tent. We can also go to the movies again and enjoy many

Movies are absolutely superior in a Cineplex environment. However, let’s not get carried away too soon. There are many questions that are still not answered with 100% certainty. Robin and I are fully vaccinated, but how do we interact with those who are not? How safe are we? 90%, 95%? Right now some of our very good unvaccinated friends are not and will not be invited over for dinner.

AT-HOME HAVEN (CONTINUED) COMFORT & LUXURY In Southern California, there’s simply no better place to socialize than outside in your very own backyard haven. “Whether it’s alfresco dining, lounging around a fire table, or having that long-awaited get-together with friends and family, the right furniture pieces can make all the difference,” says Bryan Gold, marketing manager at Aldik Home, which is proud to only carry Summer Classics outdoor furniture. “It is impeccably made, durable and most importantly, as comfortable—or even more comfortable—than indoor furniture,” Gold emphasizes. “Summer Classics is the only luxury patio furniture that hits all the right notes.” Aldik Home is unlike any retail store you have ever visited, he says. “Filled to the brim with the most lifelike silk flowers and plants, Aldik Home

handmade artificial trees made with real trunks, and silk floral arrangements, this 24,000-square-foot store is a feast for the senses.” Aldik Home has been the “go-to secret weapon” for interior designers, set decorators and savvy homeowners looking to add the

finishing touches to their indoor spaces with some lasting natural beauty. “And for those looking to transform their outdoor space, interspersed amongst the artificial plants and flowers is the most jaw-dropping line of patio furniture on the marketplace: Summer Classics,” Gold says. For those looking to add natural beauty to their outdoor space, teak is a trendy patio furniture option this year. “It is important to be discerning about the types of teak furniture you see on the marketplace, however, as not all teak is created equal,” Gold advises. Summer Classics uses the finest teak in the world: marine-grade, sustainably harvested teak from Indonesia, which outperforms all other teak. “Not only do they choose the best material, they also adhere to the best building methods, like hand-carving curved pieces rather than cutting corners and steam-bending like other manufacturers,” Gold says. “They also employ the mortise and tenon construction method, which while more laborious, makes for much more durable furniture.” Summer Classics’ teak furniture is available in the natural

honey-golden color or in a pre-weathered finish called Oyster teak, a favorite amongst interior designers. “This Oyster teak is a maintenance-free, set-it-and-forget-it teak that gives you peace of mind and stunning sophistication,” Gold says. When creating your backyard paradise, keep comfort at the top of your mind, he further recommends. “If you purchase furniture that looks nice, but isn’t very comfortable to sit in, then you won’t be spending as much time outdoors as you had hoped,” Gold warns. “If, on the other hand, you choose furniture that is luxuriously comfortable, you will find any excuse to sit outside or invite friends and family over.” Comfort is key, which is another reason Summer Classics stands out. “All of Summer Classics’ collections, be they Teak, Aluminum or Resin Wicker, are amazingly comfortable,” Gold adds. “Aldik Home showcases more than 20 different collections of Summer Classics

CALIFORNIA MUSEUM OF ART OF THOUSAND OAKS CMATO bills itself as a premier cultural institution for the central coast of California. “We are elated to be reopening,” says Museum Director Roya Alt. “I think closure really taught us that a museum is not truly a museum unless we have visitors. People were grateful that we were offering online programs and virtual exhibitions, but so many have come and said while they enjoyed them, there really is no replacement for viewing the work in person. Our mission has always been to serve the community, so being closed is antithetical to what we’re about.”

Zara Monet Feeney, Mezzanine, 2015, oil on canvas

“Defining Beauty,” on view until August 8, is CMATO’s third annual international juried exhibition featuring painting, mixed-media and video works by Zara Monet Feeney, Francene Levinson and Sungjae Lee. Also running through August 8 is “Jonathan Michael Castillo: Car Culture,” the first solo museum exhibition of the artist’s work. It’s a photographic tradition of documenting a way of life that is passing, enabling viewers to see a social life that is changing (or about to disappear). “The Memory Project,” created by artist Christine Shannon Aaron, runs through August 8 and features a unique, experiential installation that aims to show people the elements that unite us through the sharing of memories. Along with viewing sculptures made from collected memories, visitors to the museum will also have the chance to leave their own memory to be added to the collection. CALIFORNIA DANCE THEATRE/PACIFIC FESTIVAL BALLET “Although the indoor theater venues are still closed, the California Dance Theatre is offering a variety of summer camps, workshops and intensives for all ages and dance genres at their Westlake Village studios,” says Artistic Director Kim Maselli. Pacific Festival Ballet is launching its 2021 performing season with an outdoor performance of “The Adventures of Peter Pan” on Thursday, August 5, at the Los Robles Gardens in Thousand Oaks. “PFB is very hopeful and we look forward to our holiday classic of ‘The Nutcracker’ returning to the Bank of America Performing Arts Center this December for our 26th season! We have missed engaging with our audiences and cannot wait until the curtain rises once again!” For updates, visit PacFestBallet.org and CalDanceTheatre.com. NEW WEST SYMPHONY The resident company of the Bank of America Performing Arts Center, New West Symphony is a professional orchestra that also performs at the Rancho Campana Performing Arts Center in Camarillo. “To simply say that New West Symphony’s musicians and staff are eager to perform again for live audiences is not enough,” says Stephanie Wilson, Deputy Director/Director of Development. “Musicians and artists truly need the energy of live audiences because it becomes part of the art. Artist to audience to artist and back again brings the passion to any art form, and you can be sure that we are all enthusiastic about experiencing this again.” “Symphony on Tour” events offered this summer continue the New West Symphony orchestra conducted by Music & Artistic Director Michael Christie. Local Cultures.” The staff is also hard at work on several concerts that will bring people back into the theater in the fall and spring. There will also be some interesting changes, since they are taking the experiences of the past year and layering them onto what they believe their unique orchestra can bring to the community, says Wilson, noting, “None of us are the same after 2020, and we are using that as an artistic challenge.” Visit NewWestSymphony.org for more information.

PARTING THOUGHTS

ARTICLE KIM PAGANO

Each Home Has Its Own Personality AS MY HUBBY AND I WALK AROUND OUR NEIGHBORHOOD NOTICING ALL THE HOMES AND STYLES, IT OCCURRED TO ME THAT EACH HOME HAS A PERSONALITY, OR DO THE HOMES REFLECT THE PERSONALITY OF THEIR OWNERS? In our neighborhood there’s homes that families have lived in for many happy years and others where couples seem to divorce and move out of more often. Do you think each home has a personality and its inhabitants take on that trait or is it the other way around? It also interests me how each family uses their home, with some gathering in their backyards, others in their front yards and some in the garage. Where is the hub of your home? We just purchased a vacation home, and the couple that owned it before us left it immaculate and included every manual and receipt and even blueprints! What a joy, and we were so appreciative, as this made our transition much easier. When you purchased your home, what was your experience? I really believe each home is intended to be your castle, and there are many ways to achieve this. One way is to hire a decorator that gets you—that’s
