sacrifice of behavioral freedom has played a key role in our community and state presently having the lowest percentage of population Covid infections in the U.S. That’s not to say that everyone complied. I have friends and associates who have not done so and unless they had a genuine medical reason for not doing so, I do not admire them for it. However, they seem to have benefitted from the rest of us doing the right thing. Our May issues featured some very admirable women. The response from our readers has been very gratifying. Actual equality between men and women remains a goal and not yet a complete reality. Many men are still behaving like boorish jerks and a whole lot worse. WHILE THE PANDEMIC HAS PROMPTED FEAR AND UNCERTAINTY ACROSS THE GLOBE, SOME INDIVIDUALS REFUSED TO ALLOW THIS TIME TO DETERMINE THEIR DESTINY. Richard Million Burke, Jr. is one of them. “We all suffered extreme changes of lifestyle during the past year’s pandemic, and many of us—

myself included—lost our jobs and had to overcome many new obstacles,” says the Westlake Village resident, who celebrated his 61st birthday on March 30. The closure of gyms, especially, had a big impact on Richard, who utilized these facilities as a key

part of his fitness habits and efforts to stay healthy. Prior to the pandemic, he had been working out at both the Westlake Village Equinox and YMCA, using their swimming pools and fitness equipment. “But that all changed last March,” he recalls. After trying to switch most of his workout to hikes

and fitness activities around his neighborhood park, he discovered the outdoor pool at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks had reopened and settled into a routine of swimming one hour, three days a week.

Prior to his 61st birthday, he decided to combine his love of swimming with his passion as a volunteer mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ventura County. “I initially set a goal to swim 6.1 miles—430 laps—to celebrate my birthday and reserved a lane at CLU for four hours straight to make sure I’d have time to complete it,” he remembers. “However, when I did the math, I saw I’d likely have a lot of time left in that last hour and decided to up my goal to 500 laps, or 7.1 miles…I’d never swam that long or far before but I knew it would be memorable and help raise life-giving funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters.” He set a goal of raising $500, figuring people could donate up to 10 cents for each lap he swam. “I was so pleased when I posted the fundraising challenge on Facebook two days before my swim; we hit over $800 in the first hour and raised over $2,300 by the time I had completed it.”

In other accomplishments, Richard created two businesses and one nonprofit during this challenging time. Up until March 2020,

Working around the clock to help the animals, Eileen and her husband Brad, who now runs the daily operations, have also faced pandemic-related obstacles. “The challenge for us was we took a substantial financial hit; we had to cancel many fundraising and adoption events,” says Eileen, who also teaches a Humane Education Learning Program to schoolchildren, Girl Scouts and other groups. “We teach children how to be good to animals and the kids do a collection of gently used items and blankets,” says Eileen, whose bilingual (English/Spanish) kids’ coloring workbook is also used for education and outreach internationally. “We sent the booklet to Mexico, Puerto Rico, Peru and Canada,” says Eileen, noting that OBOL works with pet rescues around the world, including saving dogs from meat markets in the Philippines and rescuing sick and abandoned street dogs and cats in Mexico. The Smulsons recently adopted a Spaniel mix they named Molly from a rescue in Mexico. “She was abused, tied up in the sun, with hardly any food or water; she had fleas, ticks, and was bleeding from the neck,” recalls Eileen, noting, “She’s a bilingual dog and she learned English very quickly!” Today, Molly is loved and happy and serves as OBOL’s Humane Education Ambassador, teaching how to love and respect all animals and telling her rescue story as part of OBOL’s educational programs. Eileen encourages adoption as the best option and invites animal adopters to share their photos and rescue stories online at OBOL.info. Learn more, donate items or volunteer at OBOL.info.

great. I would definitely recommend it!” Designing a myriad of wine cellars, from full basements or rooms to spaces within closets, under stairs or on empty walls, Cellar Masters employs their experience and knowledge to ensure the quality of every custom creation. “We know the proper handling, storage and organization of wine. This expertise is an unrivaled asset in the design and construction of your cellar,” notes Scott, who shares a passion about wine with his clients. As the principals at Cellar Masters are actively involved as vineyard owners, winemakers and avid wine collectors, “We understand and appreciate our clients’ passion for wine because we have the same passion,” says Scott, who grew up around wine on his aunt and uncle’s vineyard in Mendocino County. “We are seeing more wine features in the living space—wine is social and it is best when shared with others. A wine cellar or wine wall provides a showcase for folks to share their wine,” says Scott, noting the trend to bring wine out of the traditional basement or cellar and into the dining room and kitchen or closer to the bar, where people “The combination of cork views and label view pins display some of the homeowner’s favorites with walnut cladding wood case storage

When the studio was cleared to open for outdoor classes, Michelle stepped up to welcome the clients back to WundaBar, setting up a 50-foot open air tent housing 12 WundaFormers, complete with security system, fencing, lighting, heaters, sound system and turf. “People were so thankful and appreciative,” says Michelle. “It’s been challenging with the wind, rain, cold and even hail, but it’s been well worth it. I really believe that daily movement heals the mind and body and Wundabar Pilates does just that. The secret sauce in the WundaBar workout is a unique patented machine called the WundaFormer, which combines all four Pilates machines into one,” says Michelle. Invented by WundaBar Founder Amy Jordan, the WundaFormer is a Pilates Reformer, WundaChair, Jumpboard and Ballet Bar all-in-one, offering a full-body cardio workout led by highly certified instructors. “With hundreds of movements, our classes never get boring—every class is a new experience,” says Michelle. “Anyone one can attend our classes without having experienced Pilates before. It’s a safe workout for ages 13 and up; and movements can be easily modified to accommodate injuries if needed.” In addition to group Pilates classes set to upbeat music, WundaBar Pilates also offers private and semi-private instruction as well. “WundaBar Pilates was created to strengthen, empower and support a community of like-minded individuals that strive to better their health and wellness both physically and mentally,” stated Jordan, WundaBar’s founder and a mentor of Michelle, who wholeheartedly shares the philosophy. Not so much to just simply get more homeowners to go solar. “We believe in what we are doing, so much that if we know solar isn’t going to help them save money or tremendously benefit them, we will be the first ones to tell them not to do it,” says Lopez, who shares more about Ventura County Solar and extends a special offer to CVL readers. Ventura County Solar - Energy Groupe offers a complete solar experience which includes rooftop solar, ground mount solar, back up battery generators, portable solar generators and, most importantly, solar education. Q. WHAT DO CUSTOMERS LOVE ABOUT YOUR SERVICES? A. Our most common compliment is regarding our honesty and our transparency. Our clients value our knowledge and experience in the industry, so they feel extremely confident in their decision to move forward with their residential solar project. Q. PARTING THOUGHTS

Men are what their mothers made them.

leading by example I AM SO BLESSED TO HAVE TWO AMAZING SONS, THREE GRANDSONS AND AN AMAZING SON-INLAW, AS WELL AS A CARING, AWESOME HUSBAND AND THE BEST DAD WHOM I CARE DEEPLY ABOUT. As I watch my two boys interact with their friends, girlfriends, family and business associates, I am really proud of the men that they have grown up to be. When you have children, it’s so important to remember to live by example, as we are creating and shaping productive human beings, and one day you will look back and hopefully be proud of the man or woman you helped, loved and encouraged to be the best version of themself. As a mom, be a leader—lead by example, be a motivator and have the courage to let them win at life, sports or whatever they have a passion for. Teach them self-imaging, what to do to look their best and to find their look and consider how they carry themselves and how they act in their tribe. Teach them to be givers—when you give, you receive. Teach them to honor themselves and their loved ones. Best of all, teach them integrity to do the right thing when no one is looking. You will also be teaching them to cherish you and that will be the best gift you can give yourself: the gift of an incredible and thoughtful man.
