Hmmm. I bet you are looking for some examples. Easy peasy. I will just rattle off some names….no further explanation is necessary: Martin Luther King, Jr. (1928), Andrew Young (1932), Bobby Seale (1934), Abbie Hoffman (1936), Ken Kesey (1935), Bob Dylan (1941), Joni Mitchell (1943), Carole King (1942), John Lennon (1940), Paul McCartney (1942), Paul Simon (1941)…there are many more, but I think you get the point. The older I become, the more cynical I am. I guess that comes with age. The definition of “Boomers” as leaders in a kind of cultural revolution is essentially bogus. They followed, and by the time they hit their 50s, they dropped out and started to watch Fox News. I am not saying that is right or wrong from the standpoint of values, all I am saying is that it is what it is.

HOMES TOUCHED BY THE UBER-TALENTED CANDICE NEWLAND, AN INTUITIVE DESIGNER WHO WORKS WITH CLIENTS TO CREATE ONEOF-A-KIND INTERIOR SPACES THAT REFLECT THEIR LIFESTYLE WITH FUNCTION AND FLAIR. “I consider myself more of an artist than a designer,” says Newland, who views each project as a creative process, akin to giving birth, that is never repeated. As an intuitive designer, “I’m able to identify the uniqueness of each client and I never do the same thing twice. Each person is unique in this world, and

my job is to make their space a version of their greatness,” she says. Steering clear of “cookie-cutter” designs, Newland strives to “find the balance between inspiration and tranquility, which is truly the goal for the ultimate living space.” Drawing on her innate creativity and inner artist—discovered early on as she began sewing and learning about textures, fabric, patterns and colors at age 8—Newland landed her couture clothing line on Rodeo Drive and in nationwide boutiques at age 25 and segued her passion for creativity and style into interior design via her full-service C Newland Designs firm. “Design and art tie together,” says Newland, noting that “creating something out of nothing” sparks her passion for designing one-of-akind homes. C Newland Designs serves the Southern California area, offering a full range of services, including design consult, furniture and accessories, custom window coverings, installation and remodeling. THE PROCESS Embarking on a creative journey to design and furnish their signature space, Newland leads clients through the steps of discovering their perfect environment. “The first step is to get to know them,” she says. By “getting in tune with the client, I find out who they are and get to know their style.” “I start by giving clients choices and then, based on their likes and dislikes, I learn very quickly how they resonate with specific aspects of design. This allows them to find their truth of choice. The process of finding out how my client really wants to express themselves through their home is especially important when they themselves may not know what they want,” says Newland. Talking with clients and learning their intentions inspires Newland to “figure out the function they need and give them something special that makes them want to come home.” Striving to balance tranquility and inspiration, Newland draws on her intuition to create each client’s vision of their ultimate living space. “I am very intuitive at giving clients something to elevate them-

selves. I’m giving them a gift—pulling down the universal flow” to show clients “this is who you are based on what you’re showing me,” says Newland, noting the need for creating the “wow factor”—an area that really stands out. Working her magic to create “little moments” in the various rooms of their house, Newland helps clients come home to their inner selves, transforming their environment in a powerful way. “If the energy isn’t right, it can just drag you down,” says Newland. “Transformation is the biggest healing factor in anyone’s life; I like to bring that to them. Giving that transformation can really change the whole energy in where they live; the bigger the transformation, the better, as healing, tranquil and balanced living space is key to living your best life.”

Music Room
We wanted to design something to bring the family together in this den, which originally had a mix of things. I figured out they actually had a passion for music—and so we moved their music equipment from the garage into this room, and to this day, the family is actually using the space and the equipment. In line with their contemporary vibe, we painted this room purple and set up a TV with video games—they love it!.

Bathroom
In creating this blue bathroom, I started by putting a bunch of vanities in front of my client. I realized he really likes color and stark contrast. Building on his love of black, gray and blue colors and angular shapes, we installed hexagon floor tiles and diamond patterns in the shower to create linear movement. I introduced him to a blend of copper, pewter and vintage gold metallics that contrast the ceiling and tub. I was able to tie it all together for this unique bathroom experience. The bathroom features a double vanity with a luxury quartz countertop, two artisan sinks and a big stand-alone tub, all with waterfall faucets. Additionally, the walk-in glass shower with custom tile, gold hardware and an oversized rain showerhead rivals the other elements in this swanky bathroom.

Kitchen
A marbled mirrored backsplash, black and white artisan luxury quartz countertop, and hexagon marble floor with bold-colored cabinets make this a memorable Retro Hollywood Reboot kitchen.
Home Office
The green textured wallpaper really warmed this room. We chose it because we loved the color and its thin veneer, similar to a fine balsa wood that’s been die-cut and put on top of the copper paper to create that design. It’s exquisite. The client loves all the angular shapes and that fits his style.

Billiard Room
This inviting room features deep blue walls with white accents balanced by dark wood floors to complement the purple and wood pool table. The round glass lights and triangle shape mimic the billiards and triangle next to the custom purple table top.
Staircase
We stripped down the old terra cotta tile staircase and metal railing and had it painted black and white. Plum resonated as a connector color which took us into this custom hand-painted tile. Walking into that home, you see this striking staircase with teal, green, blue and plum—all the colors you are about to see in that house. It pulls everything together. The flow continues throughout the house using unique colors and textures that fit like an updated retro-contemporary puzzle. The staircase brought all the colors to one place, preparing the visitor for their experience ahead... Retro Hollywood Reboot!

The family owned business’ dedication to quality and service has fueled the company’s growth for the past 70+ years, catapulting it to become the largest dry cast concrete manufacturing capacity facility in California. Servicing, selling and distributing to contractors and dealer networks throughout Southern California, Angelus stocks a wide range of products, including the popular Paseo and Pavilion large format pavers for patio and pool decks, as well as plank-style Aqualina and Timberline pavers. Many customers find the wood plank look and the low maintenance and longevity of concrete pavers to be a winning combination. The low-maintenance, long-lasting high quality of concrete pavers make them an even more attractive hardscape enhancement. Homeowners are often surprised to learn that a properly installed concrete paver driveway can last 30 years or more and offers an additional advantage of seamless repair in case underground utilities need to be accessed. Repairing or replacing an underground sewer line or water main in many cases involves simply removing and resetting the pavers over newly compacted base and bedding sand, saving homeowners considerable time and money.

WITH A MISSION “TO MAKE THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE BETTER PLACES TO LIVE AND WORK,” MONTECITO BANK & TRUST MADE GREAT STRIDES IN THE YEAR 2020 AS THE WORLD ADJUSTED TO PERHAPS ONE OF THE MOST CHALLENGING TIMES IN MODERN HISTORY. “This has certainly been a time for reflection,” states Janet Garufis, Chairman of the Board & CEO. “Regardless of our own personal set of circumstances, I have been inspired by how so many of us have been moved to help, in whatever way we are able.” During this unprecedented time, Garufis remembers the words of the late Michael Towbes, founder of MB&T, who often stated, “everybody can do something.” “One of the great rewards of leading this extraordinary team is the opportunity I have every day to witness and celebrate their ‘something’,” says Garufis. “Whether face-to-face in our branches or at home remotely, each of our associates has maneuvered through their own personal pandemic response and never missed a beat in delivering on our mission.” While the year 2020 was filled with extraordinary challenges, dedicated associates and community programs furthered MB&T’s mission to make the communities they serve better places to live and work. Here’s a glimpse of the milestones made in 2020: COVID-19 RESPONSE With the safety and health of its associates, clients and communities as a priority, MB&T instituted temporary operational changes to ensure all essential services could be continuously provided within a safe operating environment. Associates embraced a new way of working in 2020, including branch drive-throughs, walk-up windows, sanitizing stations, rigorous cleaning guidelines, reduced capacity and mandatory mask wearing in all branches and offices. Investments in operational technology enabled more than 40% of associates to effectively and efficiently shift to remote work, while also facilitating virtual client meetings, community education classes and company celebrations. NEW WAYS TO CONNECT Whether blending compassion with creativity for new marketing campaigns or hosting virtual events and client meetings, MB&T found a way to establish meaningful community connections in a virtual space. For instance, the bank ran a series of “edutainment” TV ads reminding people about online banking, encouraging connections with friends and family, offering tips for virtual entertainment and pursuing new hobbies, and encouraging social distancing.

IMPACTING THE COMMUNITY: MONTECITO BANK & TRUST (CONTINUED)
Additionally, the bank’s premier travel club continued to bring events about history, architecture and other cultural wonders to more than 247 members during nine virtual events, and the bank’s Wealth Management team introduced a comprehensive bimonthly newsletter for clients about important economic shifts and investment considerations. BUSINESS SUPPORT As the first and only community bank to begin accepting Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) applications on day one, MB&T associates demonstrated what they do best: taking care of our communities. These associates across multiple departments, including the Executive Management team, dedicated more than 20,000 hours to providing the level of service that has become synonymous with the team. Processing 1,800 applications and securing $205 million in funds in Round 1, MB&T associates continue to assist businesses in need during the most recent Round 2 of PPP funding, reviewing more than 1,100 applications and providing nearly $98 million for Santa Barbara and Ventura County businesses thus far. From returning PPP inquiry phone calls and emails late into the night and on the weekends, to taking applications over the phone, MB&T demonstrated its commitment to securing as much funding as possible for clients and nonclients alike. MB&T client Crystal Evans, owner of two businesses, Conejo Awards and Engraving Wizards in Simi Valley, expressed her gratitude for MB&T’s assistance. “Montecito Bank & Trust supplied both of my companies with the two rounds of PPP,” says Evans, adding that the staff assisted with her application, and will also be assisting her with the forgiveness application. “The communication around the applications has been outstanding and the process was quick, and we received our funds in a time where they were needed to keep my staff employed.” Montecito Bank & Trust’s ability to provide her companies with the PPP loan “has allowed me to keep my staff employed with their medical benefits and has allowed me to keep my companies’ doors open and able to service the community during these difficult times,” Evans further emphasizes. “Choosing Montecito Bank & Trust has been by far one of the best business decisions I have made.” COVID-19 RELIEF CENTER Located at the Hollister branch in Goleta, the MB&T COVID-19 Relief Center became ground zero for assisting clients’ financial needs during the pandemic. It was here that 10 associates from across the bank assembled at socially-distanced desks to be a light for communities in perhaps their greatest time of need. “Some days it seemed like we had an insurmountable number of questions and applications to address,” recalls Cari Shore, Senior Vice President and Director of Community Banking. “But I found it remarkable to see my colleagues diligently working to be a resource for our community.”

THE MOVE TOWARD MORE SUSTAINABLE LIVING HAS GAINED TRACTION IN RECENT YEARS WITH PEOPLE LOOKING TO HELP THE ENVIRONMENT AND THEIR WALLETS. Gardening is a great hobby to support a more sustainable lifestyle. It's fun, saves money on groceries and helps you feel accomplished by eating something you grew. It also promotes healthy living, cooking at home and eating more nutritious foods. When you grow your own food at home, you also know exactly what's in it and how it was produced. Gardening can be difficult, especially outdoor gardening, because there are so many variables, such as climate changes, unpredictable weather, and wildlife or pests. Indoor gardening allows you to grow veggies year-round in the comfort of your home, with a greater likelihood of success because you control the environment. Growing plants indoors is good for your health in other ways too. Plants remove carbon dioxide from the air and generate oxygen, making the air in your home cleaner. TERRI HILLIARD PC: YOUR TRUSTED ADVISOR FOR A SECURE FUTURE AR TICLE
“Terri collaborates with CPAs and with financial advisors who work with multigenerational family businesses, so the term I think that fits her the best is ‘trusted advisor,’ not only for the families, but for these professionals as well. They’re often looking for someone to help manage the exit planning process at a high level.” Terri assembles this whole team for her clients so they don’t have to go out and find them on their own. Because often, says Millard, the clients don’t even know where to start or whom to hire. STARTING A FAMILY BUSINESS IS OFTEN THE BEGINNING OF

to help,” says Millard. “And it’s not just about thinking about the bigger picture of ‘What are we going to do with the business—are we selling it or are we transitioning it?’ but it’s also about having all the right advisors in place.” You definitely want to have a financial advisor as part of this conversation, he says. You also want to have a good transactional attorney, because maybe this is a mergers and acquisitions kind of deal, and you also need an experienced accountant. Then you might have issues around ownership—what does the distribution look like? “It can be really complex and that is really the bottom line. You want to have somebody who can advise holistically and make sure there are no gaps in planning,” Millard adds. This is why, explains Millard, Terri completed the Certified Exit Planning Advisor® professional credential. Terri helps these families from beginning to end. “The Exit Planning Institute is the body that grants this certification,” he says. “Terri went through a rigorous training and has the skill set to advise a family on how to sell a business and how to assemble a team, and to also help families identify, before they get too far down the road, what their exit strategy will be.

ALMOST 15 YEARS AGO, ROBIN AND I STARTED WITH A SOFA AND ENDED UP WITH A ROOM AT PAUL TRENT’S THE SOFA GUY. When we moved into our Braemar townhome in North Ranch, we were thrilled with everything about our new home with one major exception—a family room layout that made it almost impossible to place a sofa anywhere in the room. We could not comfortably entertain or watch TV on a day-to-day basis. After several false starts and complete failures, Robin discovered Paul Trent and The Sofa Guy. In no time at all, Paul designed a custom sofa that fit what was until then a dysfunctional space. As you can see from the photo, after all these years of cuddling up, “plotsing” and watching TV, it is still beautiful and looks as good as new. The quality and functionality turned a poorly designed room into a winner! Through the years Paul and his warm, highly professional team at The Sofa Guy have helped us with several projects. Most recently, Robin discovered a beautiful liquor cabinet. She realized immediately that it would enhance our living

When you visit their 3,400-squarefoot showroom you will be greeted by friendly professional staff who will take care of your needs from a single room to your entire home. The Sofa Guy is not just a design studio and furniture store—it is what Paul calls a “fashion forward” firm that combines the two concepts. As you can tell, Robin and I have always been treated like family by this family owned business. Come by and pay a visit. You will become family as well. Visit The Sofa Guy at 2520 E. room and give us a great place to keep our wine and liquor glassware. Well, it didn’t just enhance our living room, it completely changed it from “okay” to exceptional. The fun part is that during COVID restrictions Robin has become our family mixologist and all of her equipment has found a great home. We also have a classy place for my very special Cornet Barcelona wine goblets. Recently Paul and his team have “upped their game.” The Sofa Guy (that’s Paul) and his new TSG Interior Design team will help you turn every room into your favorite room.

MORE AFFORDABLE HOUSING OPTIONS LEAD TO STRONGER COMMUNITIES
"EVERYONE DESERVES A HOME." This is the tagline of the Housing Trust Fund Ventura County, founded in 2008 as the Ventura County Housing Trust Fund and rebranded in 2019. A 501c3 nonprofit, its goal is to provide affordable living options for everyone who is part of the community. Access to affordable housing benefits not only individuals, but businesses as well. “One of the struggles we have in Ventura County is that we have extremely high land costs and extremely high housing costs,” says its CEO, Linda Braunschweiger. “We hear from employers all the time who say they can’t attract entry-level employees or mid-level employees because these workers cannot afford to live in the area. Providing affordable housing is important for a community to flourish.” Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions surrounding affordable housing. “When these projects go in front of the City Council, we hear that it’s going to bring crime, it’s going to bring congestion, that it’s going to bring ‘those people’,” she says. “Well, that’s not true. Today, the financing of affordable housing is such that investors demand and require the quality, upkeep, and strong budget for those developments because they’re getting a return on their investment.” Overall, adds Braunschweiger, studies have shown affordable housing stabilizes families and provides opportunities such as job training and afterschool programs. These help shore up families so they can succeed. But all this costs money—lots of money. “In order to get the long-term financing to get the development built and provide all the supportive services, you have to have layers of funding, and we are one layer, and an early layer,” she says. “A lot of developers were telling us what they really needed is early funding that helps with architectural, environmental and city fees to be able to get started.” One way HTFVC raises money, and what makes it unique from other Housing Trust Funds, is through Impact Investing to raise lending capital for its Everyone Deserves a Home Revolving Loan Fund.

Benefits of a
chemical-free home
HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED WHAT IT WOULD TAKE TO TURN YOUR HOUSEHOLD CHEMICAL-FREE? It's not as hard as you might think! We hear a lot about the dangers of chemical ingredients, but it's easy to ignore all of the warnings and keep using our favorite products. When you don't know of a better alternative, it's just what you do! However, all of those ingredients add up and can make a big difference in your health, as well as the health of your family and pets. The products that are most important to swap out depend on your lifestyle and what you use the most. If your little ones are eating food right off of the counter, you might consider the ingredients from the cleaner you just used to wipe it down and start by switching to a natural method.

If you have sensitive skin, you might start by taking inventory of your beauty and personal care products to see what you can replace. To get you started, here is a DIY product that you can make yourself for your chemical-free home.

DIY Laundry Scent Enhancer If you have ever added those popular scent beads to your load of laundry before, you know how lovely it is to pull your amazingly scented clothes out of the dryer. The funny thing about a product like that is it truly has no purpose other than adding a good smell, but it does add lots of chemicals to your daily life! There's a safer and more beneficial way to make your clothes smell heavenly. Try this DIY scent enhancer with your next load of laundry and put it to the test.
Ingredients 3 parts Epsom Salt + 1 part Baking Soda + Essential Oils
Directions Mix your ingredients together in a jar or canister and scoop about ¼ cup directly into the washer basin before adding the clothes—just like you would with scented beads. Continue with your laundry like normal.

PARTING THOUGHTS ARTICLE KIM PAGANO
THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME HOME—THAT WORD HAS MEANT MORE THAN EVER IN RECENT MONTHS. As COVID-19 spread across the globe and shelter-in-place orders followed, some were able to hunker down in a familiar, safe place to ride out the unprecedented pandemic. For me, my home has never been as important and, of course, I have never spent as much time at home. I actually have done so many things that I had always dreamed of, from clearing unwanted items to cooking and starting and finishing projects. For many of us, our homes represent not only where we live, but our office and schools for our children—for me it's been my grandkids. The most

important thing is our homes have been a safe zone. They’ve also been our own personal restaurant. Our backyards have been our playground and our sanctuary to stay sane. I recently realized how grateful I am for my home. We also have a motorhome, which has given us the freedom to travel safely and independently during this pandemic. If you're like me, many of us for the first time have never been home for this amount of time. It's actually been amazing after the panic was gone to pause and reflect and enjoy the fruits of why we all have a home. I am blessed to have a home that I love and that makes me and my family feel comfortable during the most uncertain time of our lives. In the beginning I purged anything that I felt I didn’t need or that wasn’t making me happy. It’s not perfect, and we have more to do, but our space is so refreshing and uncluttered. Whether you live in an apartment, condo, house or dormitory, your residence is your safe zone and it should make you feel comfortable and relaxed. It will make all the difference in the world. Don't forget about your patios for backyards; bring the inside out so you can enjoy the outdoors as well. They say just walking on the grass barefoot will ground you.
