Robin’s will have quieter celebrations, pretty much like mine was in August. As we start the new year of 2021, my one and only resolution is to keep looking at the glass as half full. Giving up, getting angry, blaming others, foolishly being in denial that there really is a pandemic and that sacrifices must be made to overcome it is counterproductive and creates a self-fulfilling prophecy for failure. Frankly, a great deal of mismanagement, denial, failed leadership and carelessness has created the surge in infections and deaths that we were warned about repeatedly and often ignored, and so now we are saying hello to the “chickens that have come home to roost.” They always do. The consequences of bad decisions and bad practices have a way of biting us where we sit. It is time to stand tall and be responsible and mature.

Athens Services: Committed to the Environment A LOCAL, FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED WASTE COLLECTION AND RECYCLING COMPANY FOR MORE THAN SIX DECADES, ATHENS SERVICES PROVIDES INNOVATIVE, CONSISTENT AND QUALITY ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES TO AROUND A QUARTERMILLION CUSTOMERS IN MORE THAN 50 COMMUNITIES. Gary Clifford, Executive Vice President, and Matt Trouts, Territory Sales Manager, discuss how Athens Services has maintained a rich tradition and a commitment to service, people and the environment. WHO IS ATHENS SERVICES? Athens Services is a family owned company founded in 1957 that has grown to become the largest waste and recycling company in Southern California. The big difference is we are primarily a landfill-avoidance company; we do everything in our power to divert valuable resources from our landfills. Athens is committed to the environment and supports California as it moves toward a more sustainable future. HOW IS ATHENS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER WASTE AND RECYCLING COMPANIES? We give each municipality the white glove treatment. Not only do we pick up curbside and commercial waste but also we deploy recycling coordinators in the community. They work with each customer to maximize recycling and reduce waste. Our approach builds on what people are doing already to recycle. We educate customers on what is recyclable material, help them reduce their waste, and separate their recyclables at our facilities. WHAT IMPACT DOES ATHENS HAVE ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND COMMUNITIES? Our business philosophy—The Athens Way—underscores a culture that embraces environmental stewardship. We use advanced clean technology to increase recycling and reduce what goes to the landfill. We will pick up your organic waste, take it to our facility to

make compost, and return the compost to the community for use in yards and parks to keep them green. We consider ourselves environmental solutionists, and this will be true especially in Thousand Oaks. CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS? We believe that environmental sustainability starts in the home. We focus on education and community outreach. Jessica Aldridge, our sustainability director, is well known in the recycling community. She will bring her vast knowledge and an extensive network of resources to enhance and build community partnerships. Already, we are planning a composting event in the Conejo Valley. We have some exciting plans to educate the community about food waste and green waste. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A LANDFILL-AVOIDANCE COMPANY? Athens does not own any landfills and does not plan to. We have built an extensive network of materials recovery facilities (MRFs) that sort waste and process it scientifically and systematically. We remove everything reusable and recyclable from every waste stream using “walking on the moon” technologies. That is our core difference from companies that pick up your trash using a diesel-powered truck and haul it to a landfill. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE SUSTAINABILITY CENTER AND ITS PURPOSE? The goal of the Sustainability Center, located at 2251 Thousand Oaks Boulevard in Thousand Oaks, is to be a guiding light to the community for all things

we want to protect it, even with our fleet. THERE ARE A LOT OF BACKYARD GROWERS AND FARMERS IN THOUSAND OAKS. HOW WOULD THEY BENEFIT FROM YOUR SERVICES? Athens is a composting leader in the region, with one of the largest and most advanced composting facilities. We produce high-quality compost that is 100% organic and full of nutrients and provide it free of charge to the community. We also offer composting classes to help customers understand the science of backyard composting and how to do it themselves. It is an incredible offering, and people love it. PROJECT TO HELP PEOPLE OF ALL AGES OVERCOME OBSTACLES TO LIVING THEIR BEST LIFE. Nestled in the picturesque Santa Monica Mountains at Saddlerock Ranch in Malibu, Revitalizing Minds Project aims to serve the community with a combination of alternative and conventional therapeutic approaches to mental health and wellness. “We started Revitalizing Minds Project to bring the arts and creative/alternative approaches to therapy for those in need,” says Co-Owner and Founder Ashley, noting that the duo discovered their mutual passion for helping others while attending Loyola Marymount’s Clinical Art Therapy Marriage and Family Therapy program. While commuting to school, “We spent much of our time talking about our ideas on how to connect to people, how to instill hope, encourage positive change and help others grow,” she notes. “It became clear that this was truly something we were both passionate about.”

After working in several restaurant and catering companies, she started her own business, Seasons Catering, in 2000. “My family and I came up with the name Seasons because I always believed in cooking with what was available in the farmers’ markets,” she says. “So that’s always what I strive for and what’s really been the backbone of the business. We have high-quality produce and our meats are really high end. And I used to work in Hawaii, so seafood is my niche. I love it.”

This includes everything from weddings and nonprofit gala events to providing meals to institutions such as the Music Academy of the West and Crane School. “We’ve done events with 1,500 people,” says Gabrielle. “We have people on our team who thrive with large numbers and others who are more well versed in small detail work, so we bring both of those types together. It’s a recipe for success.”

After the initial lockdown, people didn’t want to go out or go to grocery stores, so she and her team thought, “Why not make freshly made meals at a reasonable price available for pick up?” They already had the capacity to do a drive-through meal pickup. “The Good2Go idea was something I had been thinking about doing for years,” she says. “We started the first segment of it right away with the drive-through, and then Good2Go was quietly launched in May. “It’s a chef-prepared meal with generous portions that people can reheat at home. It’s a great alternative to regular takeout—you can have hot food exactly when you want it hot.” Their website, TheGood2Go.com, includes chef-curated menus, making it easy to place an order for pick up. ON E MOR E T H I NG T O TH I N K A B O UT… THESE DAYS, EVERY ARTICLE STARTS WITH SOMETHING TO WORRY ABOUT. While we are no doubt being tested by these times, there is a silver lining: time to take care of business we have either neglected or never really thought about, like creating a plan for the future and preparing for the good, but being ready for the bad. As we all know, peace of mind is often pursued and seldom achieved. One way to create some peace is to formulate a plan to ensure your family and assets are protected. One of the best ways to obtain this type of peace of mind is to consider an estate plan. Most of us know that having a will allows you to determine who your assets will be distributed to after your passing, but what if you want control over the use and distribution of your property before you pass? What if you want to ensure money is not wasted arguing about nonsense and that the needy and sick are taken care of? Estate planning allows you to mold your assets to be used

The trust can also include instructions about what happens to these assets after the passing of the Grantor, giving the Grantor peace of mind well beyond today. There are many forms of trusts, including those that can be employed to protect against tax consequences, payment of insurance proceeds and government benefits being interfered with, and still others designed for the education of those not yet even born.

Cat in a Hammock offers free design consultations. The first step is the discovery interview at a prospective client’s home to gain a better sense of what is envisioned and what the family’s needs are.

“We really try to understand what their lifestyle is,” says Kristina. “We walk the property and we brainstorm.” Measurements of the backyard are then taken, and afterwards, a 3-D design is created. “During the design process, we re-create their house and use a geographical location of the property, which shows us where the sun sets. “This is very helpful when we design landscaping because we see which areas are shaded and which get a lot of sun. It also helps with the placement of the swimming pool and lounge space for sunbathing.” Another key element is the overall flow and feel of the backyard, so homeowners get the most use out of what’s built. “It’s actually Rule 101 of design that if you put things far away, people tend to use it less,” says Kristina. “So, you always want an outdoor kitchen to be closer to the door of the kitchen area in the house. That way you don’t have to carry your food far away to cook it.” Once the design is finished, there’s a preliminary design review with the client. If any changes are needed, a revision is done, and then a detailed proposal with all the desired elements is formulated. “The homeowner gets to choose, depending on their budget, if they want to do everything or if they want to do some of it,” she says. “Once a decision is made and all paperwork is completed, the transformation begins. If a project needs permits and engineering, we take care of all of that. We’re truly a one-stop shop for all outdoor living needs.”

Lucid Air Dream Edition

LUC I D A I R : PI TCHI NG TO T HE R IGH T AU DIENCE

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | January 2021

THERE IS NO MORE PERFECT AUDIENCE FOR NEW CARS THAN MALIBU, WHERE THE CHEAPEST HOUSE STARTS AT $1 MILLION. Many Malibuites have the means to buy any car: Bentley, Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Mercedes—you name it. When it comes to electric vehicles (EV), another contingent chooses them because they are good for the planet. I encountered my first Lucid Air car prototype on display by its makers in Malibu Village. The company says the car takes a “holistic, clean-sheet approach to advanced EV construction, without using existing ‘off the shelf’ solutions so often seen in EVs from legacy automakers.” In other words, they did not simply take an existing internal combustion car and switch drivetrains. In its press release Lucid goes heavy on the superlatives about having “the philosophy of hyperefficiency embedded in every facet of Lucid Air, from energy to spatial efficiency, delivering an unprecedented combination of range, practicality, performance, and luxury.” They claim their car “looks entirely distinctive on the road,” but it reminds me shapewise, sizewise and appointments-wise of the Hyundai Genesis 90, a $75,000 luxury car that is a full $100,000 cheaper than Lucid’s top-of-the-line model. The styling, specifically the nose, looks like a Toyota Celica, except the top band is muted silver instead of body color. The headlights are interesting (some foreign automakers have had to supply “dumbed down” headlights because their more courageous designs don’t meet U.S. laws), and the vertical light bars on the front copy Cadillac. The rear view has a full-length taillight, hardly anything new (had ‘em on my ‘66 Dodge Charger). From the side it’s a four-door seemingly pillarless coupe with side sculpting, but it may have “B” CONTINUED >

DRIVER’S NOTEBOOK (CONTINUED)

As per the newest all-electric cars, a big screen domi-

nates the dash. Publicity pictures show what appears to be an all-glass roof continuing the windshield right up to the middle of the roof. I hope it’s tinted strong enough, because they’re going to make them in Arizona where it gets a wee bit toasty during the summer. The Lucid Air packs up to 1,080 horsepower in a dual-motor, all-wheel drive architecture in the topof-the-line “Dream Edition” model. Lucid claims quarter-mile times as quick as 9.9 seconds on a consistent, repeatable basis. But horsepower on a full electric is not nearly as important to buyers as range—how far can you go before you need to recharge? That’s the all-important question. One option drives up to 517 miles on a single charge, leaving the 2022 Hummer EV, with its mere 300-mile range, in the dust. Lucid Air also claims to be the fastest charging electric vehicle ever offered, with the capability to charge at rates of up to 20 miles per minute when

GIVING BACK

HELPING WOMEN AND CHILDREN FLEEING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS A CALLING FOR SAFE PASSAGE HEALS FOUNDER TRISH STEELE, BORN IN OCTOBER, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ANNUAL AWARENESS MONTH. “This is why God called me to be the trailblazer for domestic violence,” says Trish, who suffered as a victim of domestic violence as a child. Now a “Victorious Woman and forerunner for many… Success and miracles do happen when you believe and fight the good fight of faith.” Founded by Trish in 2000, Safe Passage Heals provides hope, opportunity, pride and empowerment to abused women and their children, leading them to a new and better life. The organization evolved out of Trish’s “Women Crowned in Glory” ministry in the early 90s, which encouraged women to fulfill their calling in life. With locations in Los Angeles and Thousand Oaks, Safe Passage Heals continues to reach women and children on their journey to a productive and happy life, boasting a 95% proven track record of helping survivors and serving more than 1,900 women and children. Services include health and nutrition classes, counseling, medical exams, reconstructive surgery, self-defense classes, job and computer training, clothing and supplies, transportation, children’s activities, mentorships and more. Passionate about bringing hope to people who have suffered trauma and emotional issues, including those due to Covid, Trish has ensured Safe Passage remains open during the pandemic so that anyone who needs help can find it. A grand opening ceremony celebrating Safe Passage Heals as an established nonprofit in the Conejo Valley last September featured a ribbon-cutting and festivities that included providing over 300 evening wear dresses, donated by Macy’s, to children, young ladies and women who may have missed a prom, graduation, wedding, birthday or other “life event” due to the Covid restrictions. Trish also handmade special masks with the Safe Passage logo for all in attendance.

PARTING THOUGHTS flex your gratitude muscle

ARTICLE KIM PAGANO

Building Our Gratitude Muscle in 2021 GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO ARE GRATEFUL. We all look and feel a bit different coming into this new year after living through one of the most overwhelming and stressful years on record. We still have so many things to be grateful for that many of us previously took for granted, such as traveling and visiting family and friends, eating in restaurants, and even purchasing toilet paper and paper towels for that matter. Hopefully, we will all remember where we’ve been for many years to come. Here are a few exercises to develop and build our gratitude muscle. Start by counting your own blessings, such as your family, your health, maybe still having a job, a roof over your head, great friends and the list goes on. Start examining your life and all the small details that make up your precious gift of a day.
