Hollywood or downtown L.A. for quality music and theater has always been a point of frustration for us. However, the combined power and quality of New West Symphony, Pacific Festival Ballet, 5-Star Theatricals and the Lisa Smith Wengler Center for the Arts at Pepperdine University makes that drive almost entirely unnecessary. As Al Pacino said in the film, “Donnie Brasco,” ”Fugedd about it!” The driving, that is! New West Symphony and 5-Star Theatricals blew me away this weekend with the start of their free Summer season ”Pop Up” performances. A Broadway-quality Sondheim review at The Lakes in T.O. had me singing in my car all the way home. The next evening, New West Symphony presented a sunset performance by the remarkable and supremely talented Leah Zeger. She’s a jazz diva and for good measure also a jazz and classical violinist. How’s that for a quality evening at Northwood Park? Oh, and let’s not forget the thrilling Pacific Festival Ballet’s original production of “Camelot” and their upcoming “Wizard of Oz.” Next up is 5-Star Theatrical’s production of the iconic musical, “West Side Story.” I am writing this July 1, and as the quality of their productions has risen to new heights, I can

COMPETE ON STAGE WITH A LIVE BAND AT THE CANYON, AGOURA HILLS ON AUGUST 11, EACH VYING TO WIN “BEST PERFORMANCE” AND A $1,000 PRIZE FOR THEIR CHARITY. Before the on-stage event, contestants are collecting donations for their nonprofits, with the aim of winning the “Most Money Raised” competition, with a $1,000 prize for their charity. Conejo Community Outreach, the winner of last year’s “Most Money Raised” competition, returns this year to defend their championship title. Contestants include Center4SpecialNeeds CEO Gina Giambi Peters singing “I Love Rock n’ Roll” by Joan Jett, Conejo Unified School District Deputy Superintendent Dr. Victor Hayek singing “Little Red Corvette” by Prince, “American Idol” Season 7 finalist David Hernandez singing “Purple Rain” by Prince, and Firefighters Brian McGrath and Nick Cleary, with a surprise song not to be missed. “This is a fun way for nonprofits to raise money and awareness and having 20 different nonprofits team up for one big fundraiser benefits everyone,” says the event’s Creator/ Producer Laura Conway. Charity Karaoke: Sing for a Cause is hosted by Conejo Senior Volunteer Program, which provides opportunities for adults age 55 and older to use their life experience and skills to meet community needs. 26

Contestants representing 20 area nonprofits, including the Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce, Conejo Schools Foundation, Rotary Club of Conejo Valley, Kiwanis Club of Thousand Oaks, Play Conejo, Conejo Community Outreach, Hospice of the Conejo, Harbor House, City of Hope, Community Conscience, and the VC Fire Dept’s Widows, Orphans & Assistance Fund, compete in two categories: "Most Money Raised" and "Best Performance." Audience members and online viewers determine the winner of Best Performance by voting for their favorite via text-voting. “I think it’s great way to raise money for a great cause,” says CVUSD Deputy Superintendent Dr. Victor Hayek. “The Conejo Schools Foundation does so much for our kids. It’s fun for the participants and it’s fun (or funny) for the audience. I went to the event last year and made up my mind that I would do it next year,” he adds. For “American Idol” finalist David Hernandez, participating in the event allows him to raise awareness and money for Paw Works to support animal rescues, a cause close to his heart.
“I LOVE PAW WORKS AND EVERYTHING THEY STAND FOR. HAVING RECENTLY ADOPTED A DOG (JAXSON), I ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO ADOPT, DON’T SHOP. THERE ARE SO MANY HOMELESS DOGS OUT THERE AND IT’S A SHAME THAT SOME PEOPLE STILL BUY THEIR ANIMALS FROM STORES. SO ANY WAY TO SUPPORT ANIMAL RESCUERS, I’M THERE!” By stepping out of their usual routine and into the limelight, the Charity Karaoke performers can feel great about having a good time and helping local nonprofits.

“I’m also looking forward to seeing the other performers,” says Hayek. “As a charity event, most of the performers would not likely do this on their own, so it gives our friends and coworkers an opportunity to see us in a different light.” Adds Conway, “Charity Karaoke brings us all together to support our local nonprofits and we have fun doing it. We can make a big difference when we do it together.” To learn more about the event and donate funds, visit CharityKaraoke.org/singers, where each contestant has a video link and a green donation link. “Since I teach in middle school, fortunately I get one of the first chances to remind students that while school is no doubt difficult at times, more importantly, it is a place of opportunity—the opportunity for kids to explore numerous subject areas and determine their likes and dislikes, sports, extracurricular activities, as well as career exploration,” says Sand. “So I encourage a student to try and develop a focus in their life, and if they have no idea where to start, then simply get involved with everything that they can within

EVOLVING EDUCATION Classroom innovation and collaboration are hallmarks of Sand’s teaching style, which he believes allows for deeper learning opportunities. “I see Project-Based Learning (PBL) becoming more and more commonplace in every classroom,” says Sand. “When we present students with real-world scenarios, as opposed to rote memorization, we are asking them to think more deeply and critically. And as a result, the outcomes are much higher.” Sand says he is excited about the future of education and incorporating new technologies in the curriculum. “I foresee an evolution to the creation of more concept and realworld opportunities to be provided to our students; where they can showcase their creativity in ways that weren’t possible decades ago, and prior to the current technological age,” says Sand. “For example, being able to produce an articulating prosthetic on the 3D-printers in my classroom this past year not only benefited the immediate student and his family, but it opened up the other students’ eyes in our school to the capabilities that technology can present. That was an incredible experience!” he shares. This fall, Sand will continue to offer project-based learning opportunities to students as well as incorporate new material into the curriculum. “Every year I like to challenge myself with refining lessons and incorporating new technologies with relevant issues and evolving curriculum,” shares Sand. “And while it makes for a lot of very long days that turn into evenings, nights and even weekends, the reward makes all of the effort worthwhile. I am hoping to see students creating new and innovative solutions to tasks/challenges, and this year I also will be spending more time supporting several of our growing after-school clubs (including Girls in Engineering, Competition Robotics and more).” And as if that is not sufficiently impressive, Sand also plans to go back to school himself. “This fall I will begin an Administrative Credential program through the USC School of Education’s School Leadership Academy,” says Sand, noting that applying himself to the 15-month graduate program during evenings and weekends sets an example for his students. “The students in my classroom get to see me work exhaustingly with them all day, and then regularly attend Professional Development and Graduate classes in the evenings and on weekends,” he says. “I use these experiences as ways to model to my students that if I want something enough and work hard to achieve it, then success can absolutely be earned. I strive to lead by example, including being a lifelong learner.” Sand’s title as 2019 Ventura County Teacher of the Year qualifies him for consideration as the 2020 California Teacher of the Year. Moorpark is comprised of far more than ordinary classrooms; instead the campus provides an environment where students can learn about and explore potential careers. For many Conejo Valley students, the opportunity to gain education and experience in their desired career can seem far out of reach during their high school years. However, the Ventura County Office of Career Education bridges the gap between the classroom and the professional working world by providing a direct connection to the workforce through a variety of career-based programs, several of which offer certification opportunities for students. These courses are offered during the school year as part of the curriculum to allow public high school students to learn more about a potential career, for free, before committing to study it in college. The Moorpark campus has no shortage of classes available to students. Whether it’s flying a drone or nursing, there is something sure to pique every student’s interest. Courses explore a variety of pathways, including arts, media, entertainment, engineering and architecture, manufacturing and product development, health science and medical technology, information and communication technologies and public services. MEDICAL COURSES The CEC Moorpark campus offers various courses related to the medical field. These courses delve into both the business and treatment aspects of medicine. Students can expand their knowledge of anatomy and the human body through Medical Terminology or learn about the fundamentals of health insurance in Health Insurance Billing and Coding. Medical Assistant Clinical (Back Office) and Medical Office Administration (Front Office) courses help students prepare for entry level work and can be taken in sequence with an internship to receive a certificate of proficiency. Those interested in math and chemistry can take the Pharmacy Lab Technician course, which can help students prepare to take the State Exam. A standout amongst these courses is the Certified Nurse Assistant Honors class. During the course of a single semester, students learn the intricacies of caring for patients in a classroom equipped with life-sized mannequins to practice with, hospital beds and several types of medical equipment. The second half of the course involves interning in a health care facility and completing a capstone project. Students can walk away from CONTINUED >

THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR PREPARING TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL IS OFTEN A COMBINATION OF EXCITEMENT AND OVERWHELM. With each incredible new chapter, undoubtedly comes a new set of challenges. The good news? You are going to be fine! The following tips can help ease the back-to-school transition:
Preparation.
Start practicing the school year bedtime routine
two weeks before school starts. Beginning the routine 30 minutes before bedtime allows for less stress and time to get ready for bed, get cozy and read a book. Starting the bedtime routine in advance can help ease the transition from summer to the school year.
Communication.
Communicate with your child’s teacher
before the school year begins. Introduce yourself and discuss any pertinent information regarding previous school years or struggles. Be open and honest with your children. Talk to them about how they are feeling and listen to what they have to say.
Be Attentive.
Breathe.
Take a breath and stay calm. If we are frazzled, over-
whelmed or stressed out, this is the message our child receives, and they will mirror our emotions.
Watch for red flags.
Warning signs—withdrawing, mood
