IN A SPEECH IN CAPE TOWN IN JUNE 1966, ROBERT KENNEDY SAID: “THERE IS A CHINESE CURSE WHICH SAYS, 'MAY HE LIVE IN INTERESTING TIMES.' Like it or not, we live in interesting times.” It definitely is a curse, not a blessing. Looking at it from the perspective of how our community deals with these “interesting times” when it comes to our pets and other animals in our community, the Woolsey and Hill wildfires certainly made all of us wish for less of that and more boring, ordinary and peaceful days and nights. Once Robin and I realized that we had to “get out of Dodge,” during the firestorms, the first thing we did was grab Cameo, our little waif of a Birman cat to whom, along with all of her critter friends, this Pet Issue is dedicated, and secure her in a carrier and load her in the car. Only then did we get dressed, pack a few goodies and our laptops and bailed. Nothing is worse than trying to corral a frightened cat. My guess is that what we did was repeated hundreds, if not thousands, of times in homes throughout our communities. Next think about what needed to be done to care for pets, particularly large or injured animals from families made temporarily homeless and staying in shelters or hotels.

When we discussed this in our Lifestyle Letter last year, I received a long hysterical email from an extremist (I will not mention the well-known organization) about what is and what is not a “rescue.” All I can say is “don’t bother.” A rescue is anywhere you find it and you are blessed for it. Meow!!!

Jessica Yuda-Humer, founder and president of Wailani Beauty, shows the way. The Oak Park High School alum has created certified nontoxic, vegan and cruelty-free (not tested on animals) nail polish in an array of beautiful and fun colors. Her business plan is driven by her respect for all creatures. Even the name “Wailani,” the Hawaiian word for “heavenly waters,” reflects her love of nature. “When I lived in Hawaii, I was in the ocean almost every day. I’d be swimming with sea turtles or wild dolphins and think ‘this is heaven,’” says Yuda-Humer, who now lives with her husband in West Hills. “The ocean inspires me.” It’s a natural fit for Wailani to partner with Los Angeles-based Rescue + Freedom Project, a nonprofit that saves animals around the world from laboratory experiments, euthanasia at high-kill shelters, the meat trade and abuse. RFP is dedicated to providing the animals with veterinary care and rehabilitation and finding them permanent homes. Attorney and animal rights advocate Shannon Keith is its founder and president. Wailani donates 10% of proceeds from sales of the nail polish to benefit the animal welfare group. “Working in the cosmetics industry, I know firsthand what type of testing is done on animals. This is one way I can help an organization working tirelessly to end animal testing through legislation, while rescuing every animal they can,” says Yuda-Humer, who also volunteers at RFP events. “My polish is perfect for animal lovers and beauty consumers alike.” 26

Another important part of the group’s mission is advocacy. Last April, four members of the Rescue + Freedom Project Kids program gave a presentation to the LA City Council for a motion mandating that city facilities use only cruelty-free products. The proposal is still in the works. Additionally, through RFP’s efforts, the Beagle Freedom Bill has been enacted thus far in nine states, including California. The law requires laboratories to offer healthy dogs and cats to the public for adoption after the experiments have ended. There are many opportunities for people to help. “One major challenge for most rescue groups is finding fosters and adoptive families,” says Arrington. “Following us on social media and making a donation are welcomed, too.” Living a cruelty-free lifestyle is yet another way to make a difference: “Be sure household products and cosmetics you purchase have not been tested on animals. We’ve made it easy for consumers by creating the Cruelty Cutter app. A scan of the product’s barcode will show if your shampoo, for instance, is cruelty-free.” Yuda-Humer also recommends checking the website LeapingBunny.org for its shopping guide. Arrington says RFP partners with cruelty-free brands and showcases products it loves: “One such product is Wailani Nail Polish. By supporting Wailani, you’ll be supporting Rescue + Freedom Project and the cruelty-free movement.”

OPERATION BLANKETS OF LOVE Ensuring evacuees’ pets had the necessary provisions, OBOL provided dog and cat food, treats, leashes, collars and blankets, harnesses, crates, water and food bowls, toys and towels to hundreds of pets in need. Pets brought to the evacuation center were allowed to stay with their owners in the gym as long as they were in crates, so OBOL passed out hundreds of crates to pets of all types. “From Friday to Monday, our volunteers were at the fire scene 24 hours each day,” said Eileen Smulson, who cofounded OBOL with her husband, Brad, to provide the comforts of home to pets in shelters. The organization helps at least 1,000 animals a month, in addition to serving as an emergency response team, partnering with the Red Cross and other relief organizations to help displaced or endangered animals. With 280 animals, including 153 horses, 20 mini-horses, five donkeys, eight goats, six sheep, 14 chickens and two tortoises sheltered at Pierce College Equestrian Center as well as hundreds

SHELTER HOPE PET SHOP During the fires, Kim Sill, founder of Shelter Hope Pet Shop, sprang into action. “We set up an evacuation center next to our shop at the Janss Market Place and during that two-week period we were very surprised at what made the humans and their pets more comfortable—turns out it was dog toys!” laughs Sill. To help with their efforts, Shelter Hope Pet Shop is hosting a Spring Fling toy drive for rescue dogs. “We are asking the community to donate a new or gently used clean dog or cat toy to one of our drop-off locations,” says Sill. Donations can be dropped off at Pet Food Express on Moorpark Road, Camp Bow Wow in Agoura, Indiana Bones and the Temple of Groom on Thousand Oaks Blvd, the Toyota Dealership on Thousand Oaks Blvd, and of course, “You can drop off to us at Shelter Hope Pet Shop in the Janss Market Place,” Sill adds. Dedicated to finding forever homes to rescue dogs, Shelter Hope Pet Shop believes in doing its part to help the community as well. “Currently we are helping furloughed government workers that own pets by giving them food and supplies,” says Sill.

PAW WORKS Paw Works is a Southern California nonprofit animal rescue dedicated to partnering with county and city shelters to give abandoned animals a second chance at life. In just five years, Paw Works has saved over 5,000 abandoned dogs and cats and placed them in caring homes, helping Ventura County achieve “No Kill” status within their first month of operations. Their ultimate goal is to address animal overpopulation and abandonment through education, awareness and community-driven programs that offer spaying and neutering, training and veterinary care in underserved areas. VALLEY CATS When a cat experiences extreme stress, it often shuts down and can become sick. The nonprofit all-volunteer cat rescue Valley Cats was founded in 1999 to rescue cats and kittens in need, rehabilitate and re-home them. Working with rescues that are often hurt, sick, scared or abandoned, the volunteers at Valley Cats attend to each cat’s medical needs and nurture them back to health until they are ready for adoption. Volunteers are always welcomed and rewarded for their efforts. “You can’t imagine what a wonderful feeling it is to see a ‘throw-away’ cat rebound and love and trust again,” shares a volunteer. Valley Cats’ cage-free adoption center in Westlake Village is open weekends from 12-4 p.m.

The company does this by offering clients a touch of England in the form of imported, customized, vintage London Taxis driven by seasoned chauffeurs. The vehicles’ interiors have been completely redesigned to deliver the ultimate in luxury and comfort, including fine upholstery, woodwork and air conditioning. Another “driving” factor behind the company’s strategy has been the desire to provide affordable pricing for its transportation packages. 5-STAR THEATRICALS IS THE SAME BELOVED CABRILLO MUSIC THEATER— JUST UNDER A NEW NAME—THAT SHOWCASES BROADWAY-CALIBER PRODUCTIONS TO THE COMMUNITY BY HIRING PROFESSIONAL ACTORS, BOTH EQUITY AND NON-EQUITY, TO PERFORM WITH A LIVE ORCHESTRA. “We are the resident theater company at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza— that means we are your home theater,” says Tal Fox, education director and artistic associate who developed the 5-Star Academy education program, in addition to associate-producing the main stage productions for 5-Star Theatricals. 5-Star Theatricals has been bringing enriching theater to the Conejo Valley for more than three decades; and the most recent addition, the 5-Star Academy, launched in September 2018. Since then, “We have had multiple classes running, as well as master classes and workshops,” Fox says. “We currently have two classes running through early April.” This Winter 2019 session, classes include Musical Theater Technique on Thursdays from 5 to 7 p.m. for intermediate to advanced students; and a Musical Theater Performance Class on Saturdays from 1:30 to 4 p.m. for beginner to

intermediate students. Instead of having to drive to L.A. for classes, students receive professional training in Thousand Oaks from industry professionals. Fox says, “We bring the industry to you!” In addition to professional training, students are invited to audition for 5-Star’s mainstage productions. Several of the Academy’s students have been cast in the upcoming production of “Matilda” and a slew of other local talent.

Looking for a bird to just watch and listen to.” What if we turned the ad around to say, “Looking for an owner who will rescue me and honor my friendship. Know that I will watch their house to the best of my ability and watch any program you put on. Oh, and the day you decide not to take a shower or brush your teeth, I’m not going to worry so much, just as long as you let me sit and cuddle with you. I sometimes show my emotions by licks and wagging my tail. I know it’s not polite to jump, but sometimes I get so excited. “Can you feed me, can you remember that the same thing every day gets boring? Oh, and please don't forget to throw me a bone, just for fun, it's like a little thank you during the day. When you take me on a walk, it's so much fun I just want to explore. I know I have to mind my manners, but I’m so confused. You tell me I should go on the grass and yet when we’re walking, I can't. Not sure what I’m supposed to do. Help me understand. I really want you to love me and to be happy with me. You kind of look upset when I bark; if I could speak, I would, but that’s my way of communicating. How am I supposed to tell you I have to go to the bathroom or if there is someone I think coming close and I’m not sure they are supposed to be here? Or I know it’s not right, but maybe I tease the cats. Geez, I’m just having a bit of fun. Just have to also mention those cute clothes you buy for me—have you ever thought of how I feel wearing them or if they’re comfortable? Just saying! You kind of give me mixed messages. Sorry, just saying! We can work this out! I promise I will try harder next time; please don't tell me you’re going to take me back. We’re just getting used to each other. Remember, the grass always looks greener until the weeds start coming up.” If you're looking for a new best friend, do your diligence on finding the pet that matches your needs as well as theirs. If you do, you will be forever happy until unfortunately the day your pet goes to animal heaven. Your house will feel different, trust me, and you will feel like you've lost a member of your family. If you feel like that, then you can know in your heart that not only did you love your baby, but they felt your love too. If you open your heart again to another pet, don't try to replace them, just love them starting all over; just as we are different, so are they. Together, we make incredible memories that are so rewarding.
