OUR LIFESTYLE MAGAZINES. I forgot, though. But here we are at the 37th edition of Conejo Valley Lifestyle and the 12th edition of Malibu to Palisades Lifestyle. That makes it a late 3rd and an early 1st—kind of mixed up, but then I usually am, so what’s new!? Before Robin and I started all of this, we had lived in the Conejo Valley for 10 years, but frankly we were not really that engaged in the community. It was a great place to live—nice people, cleaner air than the other valley for sure, far less crowded as well, easy access to Malibu beaches, nice homes—what’s not to like? Then we started Conejo Valley Lifestyle and two years later Malibu to Palisades Lifestyle and we received a crash course on what really makes our communities great. We realized that if our magazines were going to be worthwhile for our readers and our advertisers, they had to be different than what was already out there. There was already plenty to read about materialism, bling and glitz. Our goal when we started

THE IMPORTANCE OF STAGING When we say, “stage your home,” we are referring to preparing it to get the highest and quickest offers. It does not mean you have to spend money on renting furniture unless the house is completely empty. Most often we use the existing furniture and have our sellers remove items that make spaces and rooms look smaller. The important thing to remember is that you want buyers to come in, look at the space and visualize their furniture in the home. When buyers can visualize their furniture in the home, it makes it easier for them to picture their family living there. Sometimes we ask sellers to remove 50% of their furniture, especially if they have large pieces. Once this is done, the home appears larger and brighter. 3 THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN SELLING/STAGING YOUR HOME: 01 You usually sell to the woman. Statistically, a home purchase is more important to the woman. I’ve heard men say they could live in a cave, but to a woman, her home is an extension of herself and her family. 02 Think of a hotel room and a department store. These are places that give most people a happy rush or make them feel relaxed when they enter. With that in mind, clear out all clutter, add fresh flowers, possibly new paint and have all windows cleaned inside and out. 03 Keep it very, very clean. The 10,000-square-foot facility will be like no other in the Conejo Valley, giving OCS students a jump in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) career paths. The central hub of this new space is the 4,000-square-foot fabrication lab, which will house metal and wood fabrication machines, 3D printers and a variety of other useful tools, such as Haas tools that are typically reserved for college fabrication labs or industrial labs. The lab will allow students to make basically anything, including robots, aerial and underwater drones, rockets and even basic prosthetics. In addition to the fabrication space, the IDEA Lab will house five classrooms: physics, robotics, electrical engineering, computer science and a flex room, as well as a reception area, conference room and faculty room. “With the advent of internet search engines, it isn’t enough to recall facts and information anymore. Our students need to possess skills and talents that involve 21st century critical thinking, a curious and innovative spirit, grit, collaboration and strong character,” says Associate Head of School for Academics Dr. Matt Northrop. “Coupled with our amazing faculty, this lab will provide our students with the skills and mindset to go out and become difference-makers.” Students will have the opportunity to learn firsthand from top-

OCS seniors will have the opportunity to create a culminating Capstone Project to identify real-world problems, develop solutions through trial and error, and then provide those solutions to people, schools, villages or organizations in a way that will improve quality of life. “For example, our students can build simple but helpful prosthetic limbs for people who may not live in a place where those types of medical services are provided or cannot afford a fully-functional prosthetic limb,” Northrop says. He further envisions a schoolwide collaborative effort where the film students would travel to the village where the limb recipient lives and document the experience. Oaks Christian aims to partner with local engineering companies and entrepreneurs to provide internships for the students, as well as expertise to the classes. There is an untold number of cancer survivors who are alive today thanks to research funded by Stand Up To Cancer. “We’re changing the whole culture at the core of cancer research—breaking down silos and getting scientists and other experts to share information and collaborate in entirely new ways—so that today we’re able to accomplish in just two or three years what used to take 10,” said Phillip Sharp, Ph.D., the Nobel Prize-winning cancer researcher who chairs the SU2C Scientific Advisory Committee. "It is an enormously promising time in cancer research," said SU2C President & CEO Sung Poblete, Ph.D., R.N. "Some of the most exciting recent advances in the field involve using the body’s own immune system to attack cancer cells, and SU2C is a leader in immunotherapy. Stand Up started out with our signature Dream Teams and individual Innovative Research Grants and then added new approaches. Our 'convergence' teams pair scientists not normally associated with cancer research—physicists and mathematicians—with oncologists. SU2C Catalyst® uses funds and materials from the pharmaceutical industry to rapidly explore new uses of compounds for cancer prevention, detection and treatment. We’re also breaking new ground in the emerging field of interception, where we interrupt the cancer development process in the early stages and block the disease from progressing. A TRIGGER IS SOMETHING THAT SETS OFF A MEMORY TAPE, OR FLASHBACK, OR A FEELING THAT TRANSPORTS A PERSON BACK TO THE EVENT OF HER/HIS ORIGINAL SITUATION. Triggers are very personal, as different things trigger different people. A pleasant trigger may be the smell of chocolate chip cookies baking in the oven. An unpleasant trigger may be a war veteran having a flashback while watching a violent movie. This type of trigger is generally associated with post-traumatic stress disorder and activates the fight or flight response. An individual will react to the trigger flashback with an emotional intensity similar to that at the time of the experience. During a traumatic event, the brain often ingrains sensory stimuli into memory and becomes a habit. When someone becomes aware of a habit and continues to do it, then it is a choice. A person’s triggers are activated through one or more of the five

However, before one can focus on helping their community, they must first make sure their own needs and their family’s needs are met. This is what is reflected in the work of Herbert Spencer, the British philosopher and sociologist who wrote Principles of Psychology, where he posits natural laws govern the human mind. Just as there are natural laws that govern the human mind, there also are Natural Laws of Household Economics, which suggest certain financial and economic behaviors will prevail. As it relates to investments and household finance, it means it’s not selfish to care for you first; rather it’s responsible and prudent. For example, it’s a common goal for people to want sufficient assets and liquidity to handle an economic emergency. But obviously beyond that, many other economic goals exist, ranging from sending a child to college to building a sustainable retirement portfolio. Securing those needs and desires is often accomplished by investors choosing investment alternatives that complement the 0.6% they earn in their bank accounts. Using tools like stocks, bonds and real estate will help advance your own finances and may help set you free to focus on those around you. And, if you’re retired, you may have extra time.
