Together We Stand

his year is coming to a close… By any measure 2017 has been a very uncertain and contentious year in our country. The communities that we serve, the Conejo Valley, Malibu and Pacific Palisades, are more fortunate and less impacted by many of the troubles swirling about the rest of our state, country and even the world. But what does the future hold? Will the air continue to be cleaner than it was when I arrived in California 40 years ago? Or will suddenly unleashed fossil fuel polluters destroy what has been achieved by so many years of hard environmental management? Will our liberties become eroded by dictatorial populism? Please remember that Nazism, Fascism and Communism were populist movements. Will the stark divisions so evident in the rest of the country take hold in California as well? On a social level, all of this translates to bringing our very complex and diverse society together; we also need to make an effort to better understand and respect differences. An elitist, overly politically correct attitude contributes toward increasing the divide. On the other hand, “I’ve got it and the heck with you” does the same thing. We cannot allow our communities, our state and our country to become fence sitters staring across an abyss at each other. We are better than that. The outreach in our local communities through nonprofits and individual effort never ceases to amaze me. The fact is that our communities are very affluent, but when it comes to supporting the people in our community and beyond, “we put our money where our mouth is.” Normally messages this time of year are filled with good cheer and happiness. Let’s get beneath that seasonal surface and reach out and really come together in 2018. If we do that as individuals and through our communities, perhaps the dysfunctional politicians on both sides of the political aisle can reboot and actually get something accomplished for not only their narrow constituencies but the entire country. Best wishes for a healthy and enjoyable holiday season from the Lifestyle team!

ket in watery gravy or a Heinz Chili sauce concoction (instant heartburn!), I will tell you that I am not very fond of it—even my Bubba’s version….and she was an incredible cook! Since I enjoy cooking as much as I do eating, I came up with a solution to my Hanukkah conundrum—it’s easy to shop for, prepare and cook. Because I include a selection of organic vegetables along with the meat, it’s also healthy. Add potato latkes and a salad to the table and the meal is complete. Everything goes into a large Dutch oven—mine is a cast iron ceramic coated Le Creuset. When I place it into our convection oven at 275 degrees, it does an outstanding job of braising all kinds of beef, chicken and even infusing pasta sauces with more flavor from the ingredients. Next, I must warn cooks who slavishly follow recipes in exact amounts. I don’t. Instead, I add small amounts of what I think will work—herbs, spices, garlic, salt, pepper, wine…and then taste and add more as needed. Basically, start small and add, because you cannot take it out if you add too much, but you can always add as needed. That way the mix of flavors is always balanced to my palate. If you think the following recipe looks more French or Italian than traditional Jewish…well, it is. Happy Hanukkah and welcome to Chez Benny! 32

The following recipe serves 8 to 10: • A well-trimmed 5.5- to 6-pound brisket. Do not buy grass-fed beef—it is way too lean and will never get tender. This may not be trendy advice, but it is realistic. However, organic and “never fed hormones or antibiotics” is a great choice. • Add canola oil to the Dutch oven with crushed garlic. Heat until it sizzles, but do not burn the garlic. I use at least three cloves—I love garlic and hate vampires! • Dust the brisket with flour and pepper and brown on both sides. • Add enough beef stock to cover the brisket. Now here is one of my secrets: I cheat. Sometimes I use Lawry’s Au Jus, Lawry’s Beef Stew mix and/or Lipton Onion Soup mix instead. I just add water to the mixes… really works well. • Add at least a cup of dry red wine. • Add basil, thyme, oregano, a little rosemary and pepper…plus more garlic! This is all to taste. I also use dried herbs so the flavors do not get cooked out. • I never add salt—there is more than enough in the beef stock or mixes. • Heat everything to a simmer on your stove top. • Your oven should be heated to 400 degrees and then turned back to 275. • Place the Dutch oven on the lowest rack and let it braise for at least three hours. • Earlier you will have prepared your yummy vegetables—organic, if possible. Holiday Home Tours Open Doors for Local Charities ARTICLE ALICIA DOYLE

ith Christmas just around the corner, two nonprofit organizations are once again presenting

holiday home tours showcasing elaborately decorated private residences and more with the overall goal to raise money for local efforts. The Meadowlark Service League and Cancer Support

Community are both offering home tours this year in which proceeds will benefit important causes. For instance, money raised through the Meadowlark Service League’s home tours will benefit FOOD Share as well as local Veteran’s organizations, while funds raised through the Cancer Support Community’s home tours will help ensure free programming for people with cancer and their loved ones. Here’s a glimpse of a few special details about both of these nonprofit organizations and their home tours. MEADOWLARK SERVICE LEAGUE

The Meadowlark Service League is a group of local women volunteers that focus on fundraising for important causes in the community. The organization of about 40 women includes all ages, from active young mothers to grandmothers. The Meadowlark Service League’s Homes for the Holidays 39th Annual Charity Event will take place on Dec. 10. This event features a Home Tour & Red Barn Holiday Boutique. The home tour features residences that are “dressed for the holidays”—plus shopping and refreshments at the Camarillo Ranch House Barn.

“It is a very special event because it comes early on the second Sunday in December and helps us all begin the holiday season in true holiday spirit,” says Gwen Speakes, president of the Meadowlark Service League, noting that Judy Sitko and Kristie Akl are co-chairs of this year’s tour. “We have three beautiful homes this year, two in Somis on the Saticoy Country Club golf course, and one in Camarillo on the Las Posas Country Club golf course,” Speakes says. “Each home has unique architectural details, furnishings and accessories that reflect the owners’ styles. All have fabulous views and are great for entertaining.” The homes are open for viewing from noon to 4 p.m., and the Red Barn Holiday Boutique is open for shopping from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The boutique is open to everyone, and those that purchase a home tour ticket are admitted free to the boutique. Non-ticket holders pay a $5 fee for admittance. Tickets for the home tours are $30 each. Guests can also purchase a brunch and a ticket for $65. The brunch is available from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by calling 805.630.7257 or online at MeadowlarkServiceLeague.com. “Tickets make great gifts for family, friends and employees and service vendors, such as your barber, hairdresser, babysitter,” Speakes says. “For just $30, everyone will get to enjoy a lovely day with family and friends and at the same time contribute to our community through the 30-plus charities in Ventura County who receive funding from Meadowlarks.” This year’s holiday event is hoped to generate about $40,000. “The funds are distributed to about 33 charities in Ventura County who deal directly with people who need help,” Speakes says. “We fund programs such as FOOD Share, hospice, various health care organizations, Veterans’ organizations, arts and music, and various counseling programs.” Recipients served in 2016 include the Boys & Girls Club of Camarillo, Camarillo Family YMCA, Conejo Free Clinic, Gold Coast Veterans Foundation, Brain Injury Center, New West Symphony and Mary Health of the Sick Convalescent Hospital. “The Meadowlarks are unique in that we don’t donate to just one charity or service. We donate to several organizations,” Speakes says. “Every family in our county will probably benefit from at least one of them at some point. Our fundraisers enable us to help charities that may not have many sources of support, and it helps Ventura County continue its goal of providing services to all members of our community.” CANCER SUPPORT COMMUNITY

The Cancer Support Community presents its 26th Annual Holiday Homes Tour on Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event, attended by more than 3,000 guests each year, includes a self-guided tour of private homes in the Conejo Valley and surrounding communities, which have been decorated to display the family’s personal tastes and traditions for the holidays. Dec. 2 and 3 at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church in Westlake Village from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The self-guided tour is one of the organization’s largest fundraisers, allowing the Cancer Support Community to continue providing cancer support, education and hope, free of charge, for people affected by cancer and their families, says Donna Baharouzi, development director at Cancer Support Community. “This is basically an event in our community supporting our community of people that are affected by cancer and their loved ones,” Baharouzi says. “It’s important for them to know that we’re here for them and they don’t have to face cancer alone.” All the offerings at the Cancer Support Community are free of charge, which are made possible through fundraisers that take place year-round, including the holiday home tour. “We’re free of charge so they don’t have to be burdened with more fees,” Baharouzi says. “We offer professionally licensed therapists and Zumba and meditation classes… we also have professionally led workshops.” One hundred percent of proceeds from this year’s holiday homes tour will directly benefit the programs offered by the Cancer Support Community. “We currently have three houses that will be open to the public, and one is a VIP exclusive,” Baharouzi explains. “Most people are used to us doing the home tour over two days—we’re only doing the home tour one day this year. But our boutique will be open for two days, and proceeds from the boutique will also benefit our organization.” In other changes this year, morning and afternoon tickets will be available to diminish crowding, because the home tours are taking place in one day. Available times are from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and 1:30 to 5 p.m. Tickets for the home tour only are $40 each if purchased by Dec. 1. Tickets can also be purchased on the day of the tour for $45. Tickets for the VIP exclusive are $125 each. Those who purchase VIP tickets will also receive a VIP brunch with champagne and have access to a private shuttle that will take them to the homes on the tour. “Then they’ll get a special little gift in the exclusive house,” Baharouzi says. The ultimate goal of the Cancer Support Community is to ensure that adults, children and teens impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and supported by a community. Since its inception, the Cancer Support Community has served more than 28,000 local residents affected by cancer with programs throughout San Fernando Valley, Ventura County and Santa Barbara County. “The Cancer Support Community is just a way for them to have that support system so they can have hope,” Baharouzi says. “That’s really the key to our program and our success—just giving people hope.”

JANE SEYMOUR Best known as Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Jane Seymour wears many hats. The Emmy and Golden Globe winner is a big and small screen star (look for her in the features, “Just Getting Started” and “The War with Grandpa” and on TV in “Let’s Get Physical.” Also a mother, grandmother, dancer, artist, designer, entrepreneur, lecturer and author, Seymour still finds time to devote to nonprofits, and in 2010, launched her own Open Hearts Foundation. This year’s beneficiaries were the Bay Area Lyme Foundation, committed to making the disease “easy to diagnose and simple to cure,” Exceptional Minds, an animation/visual effects school for young adults on the autism spectrum, and Global Mobility USA, providing customized wheelchairs for the disabled. The foundation’s name reflects the philosophy of Seymour’s mother. “She said life always has challenges. Your instinct is to close your heart and keep your struggles to yourself. But if you can accept what happened and open your heart, even if it means sharing with someone going through something similar, love and solutions will come. By helping others, you’ll move forward in your life,” she says. Seymour believes philanthropy is important because everyone wants a purpose. “It’s wonderful to get in the trenches and be hands-on. If you can’t, get the word out or donate money. Philanthropy is a gift for the giver.” 48

ERIC MARTSOLF Nothing like the troubled Brady Black character he portrays on

“Days of our Lives,” Eric Martsolf is a family man and genuinely good guy who uses his musical theater talents to help nonprofits. “Many of the soap opera fan events I participate in are affiliated with charities,” says the Daytime Emmy Award winner. “I respect those good souls who empathize with people in need.” Most recently, Martsolf entertained at Magical Day of Hope, hosted by the Conejo Valley Guild of Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation/UCLA. “I became aware of the guild through my mother-in-law, a member of the group,” says Martsolf, a father of 11-year-old twins. “They’re keeping the fight alive to eradicate cancer by raising money for research. It’s disheartening to know this disease still runs rampant. I want to leave my boys a cancer-free world someday.” The cause is personal. “My wife had an abnormal mammogram resulting in preventive surgery this year. Thankfully her story had a happy ending, but so often for others, that’s not the case,” he says.

“You learn owning high-priced items doesn’t necessarily translate to happiness and is irrelevant in the big picture,” he says. “I understand Santa Claus. It feels good to give back.”

JULIETTE GOGLIA An actress since age 8, Juliette Goglia, now 22, claims nearly 40

credits, including the daughter on “The Michael J. Fox Show” and two films, “Fog City” and “The Way You Look Tonight,” coming out next year. It was her appearances on numerous Disney Channel series that prompted her involvement with Young Storytellers, a nonprofit serving public schools primarily in Los Angeles County. “Fifth graders write a short play with the guidance of a mentor,” says Goglia, a Westlake High School alum. The scripts are performed by celebrity actors in the program’s “Biggest Show,” she explains. “ The project gives students focus and structure, and once the scripts are brought to life, they realize their goals are attainable.” Goglia first participated in 2012 and again

They came to value knowledge of and exposure to the arts as imperative to becoming human,” says Spano, best known for his television roles in “Hill Street Blues” and “NCIS.” Also a veteran stage actor, Spano became involved with the nonprofit Rubicon Theatre Company in Ventura in 2001. “I found the folks there loving and supportive,” he says. “I love the joint!” Spano not only performs at fundraisers but also appears in productions—currently “A Christmas Carol” and late next year in “Heisenberg.” As a board member, he helps “our fearless leader, artistic director Karyl Lynn Burns, in her very difficult job of keeping an arts institute growing and moving forward in a difficult climate for nonprofits.” Spano encourages people to support the Rubicon. “It’s an equity theater company, unrivaled in the area,” he says.

“We draw our artists from the best in the country. We also have an excellent and effective community outreach and educational mission.” He adds, “We need the arts more than ever! The community would be much poorer without this priceless asset.”

PATRICK WARBURTON Even without seeing his face, when you hear Patrick Warburton’s distinctive, comedic voice, you know it’s him. He’s a busy actor in both animated and live action films and TV shows, including Puddy on “Seinfeld,” and most recently, “Lemony Snicket: A Series of Unfortunate Events” and the National Car Rental commercials. Warburton and his wife, Cathy, grew up in conservative Catholic households with parents who frequently volunteered. Continuing the tradition, they looked for a cause involving children. “About seven years ago, I attended an event that raised funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and in a classic ‘St. Jude Moment,’ we conceived the idea for The Warburton, a celebrity golf tournament,” he says. Blessed with four healthy children, Warburton thinks there’s no greater cause than finding cures and treatments for children with catastrophic diseases. “St. Jude is the best! Since holiday stress is predictable, we can prepare ourselves for it and practice the following guidelines: 1. Upon awakening, focus on the meaning of the holidays, the joy you can

give to others and the positive things in your life you can be grateful for. 2. At the first signs of anxiety or stress, take a deep breath and release

negative thoughts and frustrations. Utilize this technique often and especially when waiting in lines, in traffic or in parking lots. 3. Organize your time and days. Have all your shopping done early so

you don’t put excessive pressure on yourself or others. 4. Don’t wait until you are about to explode before talking about the

stress you are experiencing. Talk to friends or family, or seek professional help. Don’t worry; know that everything will work out. 5. Use your sense of humor, have fun and smile. A smile reduces

stress by sending a message to the brain that everything is okay. 6. RELAX on a daily basis. Take a bath, exercise, listen to relaxing

music, daydream about a relaxing or peaceful experience or mentally relax all the muscles in your body. 7. Be good to yourself. Get plenty of sleep and use moderation in your

eating, drinking and social commitments. 8. Do the best with the funds you can afford. The price of your gift is

24th year of “The Nutcracker” at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. Since the theatre’s inaugural season in 1994, Pacific Festival Ballet has remained faithful by bringing world-class productions to life each year with a cast of 150 dancers, guaranteed snowfall and celebrity guest artists from New York City Ballet, Joffrey Ballet and San Francisco Ballet. The cast is enhanced by professional Los Angelesbased dancers as well as auditioned students and adults from PFB’s training school, California Dance Theatre in Westlake Village. The tradition of “The Nutcracker” overflows from stage into our community, as PFB believes firmly in bringing dance and the arts to those who may not have the resources to set foot in a theatre. Each year, outreach performances are presented by PFB and the Kids in the Arts program exclusively for local children and Title 1 schools. With budget cuts affecting arts education, this opportunity introduces children to the theatre and performing arts firsthand. Another local organization that holds the heart of Pacific Festival Ballet is Support for the Kids, founded by Lynda Miller. Each year donated tickets bring upward of 100 individuals to attend “The Nutcracker” or PFB’s spring ballet. In an effort to bring the holiday spirit to those who cannot attend a theatre performance, select cast members share the magic of “The Nutcracker” in a charming preview show. These performances are brought to children at Casa Pacifica as well as seniors at University Village to enhance their Christmas celebrations. Kim Maselli, artistic director of Pacific Festival Ballet feels these outreaches are vital.

“The performing arts have a way of crossing boundaries and uniting us all,” says Kim. “Dance and music give us a common voice and the ability to find joy in a form that is universal.” Each year, PFB’s “The Nutcracker” is launched with a renewed spirit. Cast members bring a fresh energy to familiar characters and the ballet once again comes to life. To step into the magic of the “The Nutcracker,” join PFB on Saturday, December 16 and Sunday, December 17 at 2 and 7 p.m., as this year’s cast and New York City Ballet guest artists Tiler Peck and Gonzalo Garcia grace the stage at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.
