Giving Breast Cancer the Boot

ast October we devoted a major portion of Conejo Valley Lifestyle to the fight against breast cancer. Here we are a year later and the fight goes on. At a recent event in preparation for October’s month-long recognition of that fight, a good friend expressed a bit of impatience, exasperation and maybe some overload on the subject. In her words, “Enough!” I understand how she feels, but until the fight is won, we must stay focused and on the job.

In many ways, communication is one of the most important weapons we have in our arsenal. Since breast cancer is largely a woman’s disease, women are uniquely qualified to use communication as a weapon. Women are typically more open about their feelings than men, and most of us are not afraid to express them! In this case, as the publisher of a widely distributed community magazine and website, it is my responsibility to keep awareness about the need for increased research, resources and funds to support both, front and center. This month’s issue features articles about breast cancer survivors, diagnosing, treating and surviving breast cancer and how our community joins in and comes together to support the cause. This month, on October 7, my Conejo Valley Lifestyle team and I will be Making Strides against Breast Cancer, striding in the 5K right down Thousand Oaks Boulevard. Be there to join us. Participate! ctober is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and since 1993, millions of passionate participants have joined forces to take steps against breast cancer in the American

Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer annual 3- to 5-mile walks each year. The noncompetitive annual walks held across the country every October provide a powerful and inspiring opportunity for communities to come together to honor breast cancer survivors, raise awareness about reducing the risk of getting breast cancer, and fundraise for the American Cancer Society. “ The atmosphere is almost like a party with music, balloons and especially those who come dressed up in silly costumes,” says Survivor and Walk Participant Harriet Sheinberg, of Newbury Park. “It says we have been touched by breast cancer, but we are first and foremost individuals who celebrate life.” While “almost everyone has been affected by breast cancer in some way,” notes the American Cancer Society online, taking action by donating to a Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event makes a difference in so many ways, from funding research to simply providing a hand to hold. Monies raised from the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks help the American Cancer Society fund research, provide education and guidance, and offer comprehensive patient support to those who need it most so that no one facing breast cancer ever has to walk alone. Thankfully, she had acquired knowledge and support from the Cancer Support Community. “It was in a little yellow house and we became extremely active,” Sheinberg says, recalling her experience attending support groups at the Santa Monica Cancer Support Community. Sheinberg learned more about coping with cancer when her daughter, Janice, was diagnosed at age 41. Today, Sheinberg empathizes with others facing similar situations. As a survivor, she is involved in the American Cancer Society’s Pink Ribbon Partner program offered through Los Robles Hospital, in which breast cancer survivors connect with newly diagnosed patients. “We have to get the word out that this exists,” Sheinberg emphasizes. “I want people to realize there’s a program out there—when you’re newly diagnosed, you can talk to someone who has already walked in their shoes.” The Pink Ribbon Partners program aims to raise money for breast cancer research and to increase community awareness about this free resource, Sheinberg notes. Hoping to raise $1,000 in the Making Strides walk, “with your help, we will succeed,” Sheinberg says.

When Bill Harris was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, he

immediately became focused and intent on dealing with the disease quickly and thoroughly. After undergoing a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy, which determined the extent of his cancer, he had a full right breast mastectomy that included sentinel lymph nodes and some distal nodes. “Following the mastectomy I was put on a Tamoxifen regiment and had the BRCA gene mutation test, which returned a positive BRCA2 mutation,” Harris, 66, recalls. “As a result of that test and my personal and family history, I chose to have a second mastectomy in order to reduce the chances of metastasis or a second breast cancer.” Upon his diagnosis, Harris received support from his wife, and also reached out to numerous organizations, including the American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Mayo Clinic,

Livestrong Foundation and Imerman Angels. “Initially, the American Cancer Society provided a great deal of information about breast cancer, but nearly all of it was about women,” Harris, of Agoura Hills, remembers. “There was little available about men and what was there described it in the same terms as those for a women,” he says. “That was the case in most every resource I went to.” He has since become involved with Real Men Wear Pink, which works alongside Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events. Real Men Wear Pink gives communities the opportunity to nominate local male leaders to spearhead fundraising efforts for the American Cancer Society's breast cancer initiatives. Today, Harris is cancer-free. More specifically, as of August 25, “I have been cancer-free for 5 years, 1 month, and 24 days—but who's counting, right?” Since being cancer-free, “I've been more diligent about being aware of what is going on in my body,” he says. “You are always conscious of the fact that it was there, and that it could come back.” He has also lost weight, spends more time with his wife and dog, and has “learned to not sweat the small things,” he says. Today, he informs both men and women that male breast cancer exists, and that it’s as dangerous as breast cancer in women. “It is due to late diagnosis that the mortality rate in men from the same breast cancers women get is five times as great, due mostly to metastasis,” Harris notes. He advises others facing this disease: “Be diligent. Learn how and do self-exams. Don't hesitate to go to the doctor at the first sign of any change in your breasts.” Most importantly, “remember, you are not alone,” Harris adds. “There are many people and organizations out here that will provide any and all support you need.” CONTINUED >

Pam Freyder It was a “punch in the gut” followed by denial when Pam Freyder was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013. Today, she views her journey as twofold. “Part 1 was from diagnosis through treatment, which lasted six months,” recalls Freyder, of Simi Valley. Her children, family, very special friends and neighbors “stepped up” and walked beside her both physically and emotionally. “They were an immeasurable support system,” Freyder says. “Without them, I would not have had the positive outlook throughout this part of the journey that I had.” Part 2 was "being thrown back like a fish" when the doctors said, "You're done with treatment, now go back to your life.” “For this part, I was truly blessed to have found Young Survivors Coalition Support Group,” Freyder says. “We have ladies at all stages of breast cancer from the Conejo Valley, to Moorpark, to Camarillo to Simi Valley. These ladies have been my rock and sounding board for discussions as well as becoming what I consider a sisterhood. I am four years out since my diagnosis and we still meet.” She also credits the American Cancer Society’s Look Good Feel Better class, which she attended right before her first chemo treatment. “It was a great ice breaker into the world of what chemo does to our skin and face,” Freyder remembers. “I loved the cosmetologist who walked us through the class and found that having humor and laughter was a great way to change any dark day or mood.” While Freyder has undergone a lumpectomy, chemo and radiation, “We are never cancer-free; the cancer cells are just not detected. That being said, my last treatment was September 26, 2013, and so I have been on the other side of cancer for just shy of four years.” Today, she tells others experiencing breast cancer, “You are stronger than you know.” “You also need to allow others to help,” she emphasizes. “You are not alone. There are many people who want to help; let them.” And don't be afraid to ask questions of your doctors, no matter how stupid or insignificant you may be afraid they are, Freyder advises. “Your peace of mind will help you in your journey and will help your body to heal faster as well,” she says. She advises others going through this journey to “enjoy every day.” “Some days are better than others, but only you have the ability to turn your attitude to the positive,” Freyder adds. “YOLO, as my kids say, you only live once. The scars are a daily reminder of the cancer, and so I choose to live every day to the fullest.”

NEW WEST SYMPHONY STARS SHINE IN 23RD SEASON

ew West Symphony, with performances in Thousand Oaks, Oxnard and Santa Monica, opens its 2017/2018

Masterpiece Series season this month. Kicking off its 23rd season with a tribute to Hispanic Heritage Month, New West Symphony’s “Grand Season Opening” Oct. 6-8 features favorites from Argentinian and Spanish composers, Piazzolla and Falla, as well as symphonic classics by Mozart and Beethoven. Renowned flamenco dancer Siudy Garrido will perform the Spanish ballet, “El Amor Brujo” by Manuel de Falla, and Guest Conductor Grant Cooper will lead the performance. Next month, on Nov. 17-19, in celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday, famed Hollywood Bowl Music Director John Mauceri will conduct a unique multimedia program in honor of Bernstein, and violin superstar Pinchas Zukerman will conduct and perform with the orchestra. Maestro Mauceri, a beloved protégé and close collaborator with Leonard Bernstein, will share many of his personal stories of their time working together. Presented in partnership with the Valley Performing Arts Center, the program will feature selections from “On the Town,” “West Side Story,” “Candide” and other Bernstein favorites. Performances are Nov. 17 at Valley Performing Arts Center, Nov. 18 at Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza and Sunday Nov. 19 at Oxnard Performing Arts Center. In its annual series, the New West Symphony performs major works from the symphonic repertoire with internationally-acclaimed artists as guest soloists. The 2017/2018 season continues the exciting process of auditioning candidates for the New West Symphony’s new music director. Three finalists have been selected to return to conduct the orchestra, performing programs in distinctly different styles from the programs they conducted previously. Maestro Kynan Johns will conduct the January “Tchaikovsky Pathetique” concerts, Tania Miller will conduct the May “Virtuoso Tour de Force” concerts and Fawzi Haimor will conduct this month’s season opening concerts. Founded in 1995, the New West Symphony is comprised of musicians from the rich talent pool of professional Los Angeles-area artists. In addition to its concert series, the New West Symphony provides quality outreach and educational opportunities for the communities it serves through its annual Symphonic Adventures concert programs for youth, its traveling Music Van and its New West Symphony Harmony Project of Ventura. poorly when the stock market performs poorly. We all remember the devastation on portfolios from the crashes of 2000-2002 and 2007-2009. The key, then, is to be WISE about the stock market’s TREND and proactively move to the sidelines when the market’s trend turns negative. Being TREND WISE has several essential benefits: • It instills discipline in your investing, instead of following hunches or reacting emotionally to the news of the day. • When the market trend is down, you may want to consider moving completely out of stocks. • While the market trend is up, you may want to consider participating. Being TREND WISE is very different than the typical “Buy and Hold”

strategy. Most “Buy and Hold” portfolios are well diversified (this is good) and include periodic rebalancing (also good), and they may even dial your stock exposure up or down a few percentage points from time to time. But they rarely move completely out of the market. The S&P 500 dropped 55% in the 2007-2009 crash; NASDAQ dropped 78% in 20002002. Such losses can completely derail your financial plan. Being TREND WISE implies you have a market trend model you can follow. My suggestions for such a model would include: • Base it on direct market data, such as price or volume. I have not found indirect factors, such as PE multiples or interest rates or GDP, to provide actionable signals. • Longer term. You don’t want to be in and out all the time. The trend I use has averaged one exit every year and a half. • It’s trend-following. No model can predict the market.
