LIFESTYLE LETTER

A Grateful Goodbye As we put together this month’s Style Issue, Shea and I found ourselves reflecting on something much bigger than fashion, trends or personal style. We found ourselves thinking about the incredible community that has welcomed us, supported us and made the past two years with Columbia City Lifestyle so special. When we began this journey, we hoped to create a publication that celebrated the people, businesses, stories and spirit that make Columbia such an amazing place. What we didn’t fully expect was how much this community would give back to us. You welcomed us into your businesses, homes, events and lives. You trusted us to share your stories, supported our magazine and made us feel like a true part of this community. For that, we will always be incredibly grateful. After much thought, Shea and I have decided it is time for us to step away from Columbia City Lifestyle and begin pursuing new endeavors. While it is certainly bittersweet to close this chapter, we are excited to share that the magazine will continue under new ownership. We feel grateful knowing that the stories, businesses and people of Columbia will continue to be celebrated in its pages. To our advertising partners, contributors, readers, friends and everyone who has cheered us on over the past two years: thank you. We could not have done any of this without your kindness, friendship, support and belief in what we were building. While we may be stepping away from the magazine, we certainly aren’t saying goodbye to Columbia. This community will always hold a special place in our hearts, and with our family’s love for Mizzou, you can be sure we’ll still be back often—especially when there are Tigers to cheer on! We leave this chapter feeling proud, grateful and incredibly fortunate for the relationships and memories we’ve made along the way. Thank you, Columbia, for being so good to us. We’ll see you around town—and, of course… MIZ! With love and gratitude,

H AP PY H OU R | FO O D + BE VE RAGE

As the season transitions into fall, it still features the warm, sunny days of summer but nights start to drop into the crisp temperatures. That leaves us in the limbo of wanting cool, refreshing drinks part of the time but also craving the deeper, spice-infused flavors of autumn. This recipe for apple cider sangria is the perfect blending of the seasons, leaving you feeling both refreshed and warmed through the deep flavors and interesting hints of spice. It’s a great drink to add to any dinner party, cocktail gathering, back deck after-hours get-together, or birthday bash. Here’s what you need to make the perfect mid-season cocktail to enhance whatever event you have planned.

ARTICLE BY ALLISON BANKSTON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

• • • • • •

Combine all ingredients together and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer) before serving. The drink can be enjoyed immediately, if desired, but the longer you let the ingredients sit and mix, the deeper the flavors will be. Giving it time to develop will make the drink more captivating and interesting.

1 bottle, standard size, of pinot grigio 2 1/2 cups fresh apple cider 1 cup club soda 1/2 cup ginger brandy 3 honey crisp apples, chopped 3 pears, chopped

NOTE: Regular brandy can be used, but ginger brandy gives it an extra kick of flavor.

BEAUTIFUL MOMENTS ARTICLE BY SHEA SULLIVAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH JANE PHOTOGRAPHY

AT BETZ

A Columbia family legacy designed to honor every meaningful moment. In the heart of downtown Columbia, a visit to Betz Jewelers feels less like stepping into a traditional fine jewelry store and more like being welcomed by family. That feeling is intentional. For four generations, the Betz family has built its business around personal relationships, expert craftsmanship and the privilege of helping customers mark the moments they never want to forget. The family’s jewelry story reaches back to 1941, when Glenn Betz began an apprenticeship as a jewelry craftsman after learning from his own father. A master platinumsmith, designer and maker of fine jewelry, Glenn became sole proprietor of Glenn Betz & Associates in St. Louis in 1969. His sons, L.C. and Craig, worked alongside him, carrying the family craft forward. In 1983, L.C. Betz opened the doors to the company’s current downtown Columbia location. Today, L.C.’s daughter, Rachel Flynn, and her husband, Robert—proudly carry this legacy forward. Robert is a gemstone expert – the only certified graduate gemologist working in a retail setting in Columbia. This legacy business recently entered an exciting new chapter of growth, earning the prestigious Small Business of the Year award from the Columbia Chamber of Commerce. Adding to the celebration, co-owner Rachel Flynn was also named the Debin Benish Businesswoman of the Year, a testament to her outstanding leadership and dedication to the local community. “Jewelry is so much more than an accessory—it holds people’s stories,” Rachel says. “We have the privilege of helping families mark engagements, anniversaries, graduations, and new babies, or even honoring a loved one who has passed.”

That role carries meaning well beyond a single purchase. A necklace may commemorate a graduation, a ring may begin a marriage and a redesigned heirloom may connect several generations in one wearable piece. The store’s familiar phrase, “Beautiful moments begin at Betz,” is more than a tagline to Rachel. It describes what happens there every day. Trust, she believes, is earned over decades, not days. Many customers now represent the third or fourth generation of their own families to choose Betz for engagements, anniversaries, birthdays and milestones. They return because the experience is honest, transparent and never driven by pressure. That longevity is rooted in investment in Columbia. The community has supported the Betz family for decades, and Rachel views giving back as a responsibility and a joy. The business supports organizations, schools, nonprofits and events that help make the city special. For Rachel, community involvement is not a box to check; it is an extension of serving neighbors. When families and organizations thrive, the community becomes stronger, and Betz grows alongside the people who have most trusted it with their celebrations. Rachel wants every guest to feel comfortable, whether selecting a $50 sterling silver gift or creating a $50,000 custom engagement ring. Fine jewelry should feel exciting rather than intimidating. Guests are encouraged to arrive exactly as they are. Rachel and Robert tell clients to bring children along, and the store even built a lounge with snacks, video games and more so children feel welcome. CONTINUED >

“Trust is something that we’ve earned over decades. We treat our customers the way we’d want our own family Clients stop by straight from the gym in leggings or dressed to the nines before a formal event to have their jewelry cleaned for free. The goal is for everyone to leave feeling confident, educated and genuinely excited about their jewelry purchase. That welcoming approach has helped Betz remain a trusted Columbia name while preserving the values that first shaped the family business. For the September Style issue, Betz offers a reminder that personal style shines brightest when it feels authentic. Start with the pieces you naturally reach for and then go from there. I’m personally a ‘more is more’ type of gal, but I fully respect a minimalist and want her to feel comfortable in her selections. Trends can offer great inspiration, like this season’s modern, polished take on playful Y2K layered looks and vibrant colors, but jewelry should ultimately reflect the person wearing it,” Rachel said. Classic diamonds remain endlessly wearable, whether styled alone or layered into a more individual combination. Style becomes a personal signature. Rachel’s essential jewelry wardrobe includes diamond stud earrings, a simple diamond pendant and a classic tennis bracelet. Diamond huggies are another versatile favorite. Most important, however, is a piece with personal meaning—perhaps an heirloom, a custom design or jewelry featuring significant birthstones. For clients dreaming of something entirely their own, the custom process begins with conversation. The Betz team learns about the customer’s lifestyle, inspiration and sentiment behind the piece. A CAD rendering then allows the customer to see the design and refine each detail before it is made. With three bench jewelers on-site, ideas can become one-of-a-kind pieces under the same roof. Some of Rachel’s favorite projects begin with inherited jewelry that carries deep emotional value but no longer suits the owner’s style. Diamonds from several pieces, and sometimes several generations, can be thoughtfully combined into a new design. The result honors the family’s history while becoming something its current owner will truly wear. That balance of timelessness and individuality also guides engagement-ring appointments. The main priority for the team at Betz is listening, not interjecting or selling. Couples are encouraged to set a budget, keep an open mind and try different shapes and settings. Often, the style that feels right is not the one they expected. Above all, the

to be treated... with honesty, transparency and kindness, while making everyone feel welcome in our store.”

experience should feel joyful, informed and free from pressure. Being a full-service jeweler means caring for treasured pieces long after they leave the display case. Betz provides in-house repair, ring sizing, hand-engraving services, complimentary inspections and cleanings, appraisals, stone replacement, and jewelry restoration. The experienced bench jewelers complete many services on-site, giving customers confidence that meaningful pieces remain in trusted hands.”The team continues to invest in technology, custom-design capabilities and education while honoring the traditions that shaped the company. Still, Rachel says the future of Betz will always rest on people and relationships. That commitment extends throughout Columbia. After decades of community support, Betz gives back to local organizations, schools, nonprofits and events because the city’s success is deeply connected to its own. Rachel hopes the name Betz Jewelers will always evoke trust, quality and genuine care—a place where everyone feels welcome and every story matters. If families continue returning generation after generation, she says, that will remain the greatest compliment the business could receive.

ARTICLE BY SHEA SULLIVAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH JANE PHOTOGRAPHY

For more than 20 years, Jacque Truesdell has cared for others as a registered nurse. When she began learning more about the long-term effects of sun exposure, her love of a sun-kissed look inspired a new way to help people feel their best. She launched Golden Glow by Jacque, a mobile spray tanning business centered on confidence, convenience and skin health. Today, she brings customized, natural-looking color directly to clients across Central Missouri, offering a safer alternative to UV tanning and a comfortable, personal experience before weddings, proms, vacations and life’s other special moments all year.

What sets Golden Glow apart is the care Jacque brings to every appointment. Her healthcare background helps her create an experience that feels professional, private and reassuring, while her mobile model allows clients to enjoy it from home or another location of their choice. Flexible scheduling and personalized attention make the process especially convenient during busy seasons of life. She values the chance to make each appointment relaxed, enjoyable and tailored to what makes every client comfortable. First-time clients can book through social media, direct message or text. After choosing an appointment time based on the date of their event, Jacque sends detailed preparation and aftercare instructions. She also discusses each client’s tanning history, skin tone, undertones and desired depth of color to select a customized shade. “There is no one-size-fits-all solution,” she says. “Every client’s skin is unique.” On appointment day, Jacque sets up in an open, well-lit area. Before leaving, she reviews how the tan should develop and fade, then follows up the next day to answer questions and ensure the client loves the result. Preparation is essential for a smooth, lasting glow. Jacque recommends exfoliating with an oil-free product 24 to 48 hours beforehand and shaving at least 12 to 24 hours before the appointment. After showering, clients should avoid lotion, deodorant, perfume and makeup because these products can create a barrier on the skin. Dark, loose-fitting clothing and slip-on shoes are best afterward. The tan should develop for eight to 12 hours before the first warm-water rinse. Clients should skip soap, shampoo, exfoliation and shaving during that rinse, gently pat the skin dry and wait at least 24 hours before washing their

hair. Daily moisturizing is the key to preventing premature fading. With proper care, results typically last seven to 10 days. Golden Glow offers individual appointments, multi-tan bundles and group experiences for parties, proms, graduations, girls’ nights and bridal celebrations. Bridal packages include a trial tan for the bride and customized tanning for the wedding party two to three days before the ceremony. For Jacque, the community’s trust means everything. After living in Hallsville for more than 20 years, she has helped clients prepare for homecomings, weddings, Mizzou sorority events and family milestones throughout the surrounding area. Looking ahead, she hopes to expand into more Central Missouri communities while growing her work with weddings, proms and college events. No matter how the business grows, her purpose will remain unchanged: helping every client feel healthy, radiant and confident for moments they will always remember. Follow @GoldenGlowByJacque on Instagram or call or text (573) 881-0329 to learn more or schedule an appointment.

BERRY BRUSCHETTA A RECIPE FROM A CUP FULL OF SASS

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY TINNIN

This Berry Bruschetta is a delightful twist on the classic bruschetta that we all love. This version uses fruit, bringing a sweet element to the traditionally savory dish. With the use of fresh berries, cream cheese, delicious fruit spread, crumbled cheese, and fresh rosemary, it is the perfect addition to your next spring event. This simple, yet beautiful appetizer could be enjoyed at your next brunch, shower or Mother’s Day celebration. But let’s be honest—you don’t need an excuse to enjoy this delectable dish!

INGREDIENTS: • • • • • • • •

12 baguette slices Extra virgin olive oil (for brushing) 4 oz cream cheese 1/4 cup Fruit and Honey Triple Berry Spread (or any fruit spread of your choice) 1/3 cup fresh strawberries, sliced 1/3 cup fresh blueberries 2 oz fruit cheese (such as Wensleydale with Autumn Fruit), crumbled Fresh rosemary for garnish

DIRECTIONS:

3. Toast baguette slices in the oven for 3-5 minutes or until lightly toasted. 4. Once the baguette slices are cool, spread a generous layer of cream cheese over each slice. 5. Add the fruit spread on top of the cream cheese. 6. Add sliced strawberries and a few blueberries, allowing the vibrant colors to pop. (A great place to find fresh fruit is our local staple, Crystal & Rich’s Produce.) 7. Crumble the fruit cheese over the top for an added layer of richness and depth.

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. 8. Garnish with fresh Rosemary if desired. 2. Lightly brush the front and back of the baguette slices with Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

9. Serve and enjoy!

ONE BEAUTIFUL VISION From salon chairs to wedding aisles, Kaylee Concannon has built a collection of businesses centered on making women feel their absolute best.

ARTICLE BY SHEA SULLIVAN

I NSP IR E D BY | BEAUTY

Kaylee Concannon has always been a dreamer, noticing little details and finding reasons to romanticize everyday life. A wife and mother of two, she has also always loved beauty. She initially studied marketing, but a college biology class brought sudden clarity. “It hit me like a brick that cosmetology was the avenue I was meant to explore,” she recalls. After finishing the semester, she enrolled in cosmetology school the following fall, beginning a creative career that would grow into three closely connected businesses centered on beauty, celebrations and meaningful experiences. The idea for Uplifted Salon came during a transformative season in Kaylee’s life.

“Life can be heavy. For so many women, life is go, go, go, often never stopping to really breathe or do anything simply for us.”

As a new mother navigating postpartum depression, she knew she wanted to continue her career, but motherhood had changed what she needed from it. She envisioned a salon that offered guests more than a hair appointment while giving its team compensation and schedules that supported the lives they dreamed of building. Creating that balance was deeply important to her, and seeing it become reality remains one of her proudest accomplishments. The name was chosen just as intentionally. Kaylee wanted it to evoke an emotion and capture exactly how guests should feel when they leave: uplifted, both inside and out.

30

I NSP IR E D BY | BEAUTY

“Life can be heavy,” she says. “For so many women, life is go, go, go.” Through its relaxing, experience-driven approach, the salon became a place where women could pause, breathe and do something entirely for themselves. In 2025, Kaylee transitioned the salon into The Uplifted Suite, a smaller setting that preserves the same thoughtful experience while allowing her more time for her children and growing wedding businesses. Uplifted Bride became a natural extension of Kaylee’s beauty career. Although bridal styling had long been part of her work, she fell deeply in love with it in 2020. Being invited into the intimate hours

before a wedding—and trusted with how a bride will look and feel—is something she never takes lightly. From the first inquiry through the final touch-ups, her team focuses on personal connection, clear communication and a beautifully organized experience throughout. Hair and makeup should complement the dress, setting, photography and atmosphere without ever making a bride feel like a copy of someone else. “A bride should feel like her best self while also flowing with the overall vision,” she says. “Finding the balance is key.” That attention extends far beyond the beauty services. The Uplifted Bride team

“We really want to know the details of the wedding day, ensuring everything flows and none of our brides ever look or feel cookie cutter.”

maintains communication throughout each engagement and stays meticulously organized, creating a calm wedding morning from the first arrival through final touchups before the bride steps into her gown. Kaylee’s fascination with celebrations eventually inspired another creative venture. After years of planning elaborate parties for her children and sneaking peeks at reception details after bridal appointments, she was asked to sponsor an event. Her idea was to have her husband Ryan build a champagne wall for displaying giveaway items. When he reasonably asked what they would do with it afterward, Kaylee saw only one obvious solution: Naturally, they would launch a luxury seating chart and signage company. And just like that, Wedding Wall & Co. was born. The partnership brings their talents together naturally. Ryan is a skilled craftsman who turns ambitious concepts into beautifully built installations, while Kaylee helps couples define their vision and carries it through a seamless design process. Her 16 years behind the salon chair have

taught her what women value, and her bridal career has given her a behind-thescenes understanding of weddings and vendors. That experience helps her guide couples toward meaningful details while identifying where an investment will make the greatest impact. Across The Uplifted Suite, Uplifted Bride and Wedding Wall & Co., Kaylee’s work is connected by care, creativity and thoughtful design. Looking ahead, Kaylee dreams of bringing the brands together under one roof, where each could flow as part of a creative headquarters while maintaining its individual strengths. She also knows growth must remain aligned with what matters most. “It’s absolutely crucial that each company fits into our lifestyle and values as a family,” she says. For a woman who would rather leap than remain too long at the mountaintop, evolution is part of the excitement. Kaylee feels grateful that every creative outlet has supported her not only as an entrepreneur, but throughout her growth as a person, mother and wife.

Wear Colors That Truly

LOVE YOU A quick guide to finding flattering shades for life. KNOW YOUR UNDERTONE Your undertone doesn’t change with the seasons. Check your wrist veins: blue means cool, green means warm, and unclear may be neutral. Cool tones love jewel colors; warm tones glow in earthy, rich shades.

CONSIDER CONTRAST Do you have high contrast between your hair, skin, and eyes (like dark hair and light skin)? High contrast looks great in bold, clear colors. Low contrast (like blonde hair and fair skin)? Softer, blended tones often suit you best.

THE WHITE VS. CREAM TEST Hold a white and ivory shirt near your face. If white flatters, you're likely cool-toned. If ivory glows against your skin, you're likely warm-toned. This quick test reveals your undertone with ease.

BUILD AROUND YOUR “WOW” COLORS Once you identify a few colors that make you look and feel amazing, use those as the base of your palette. These are your power colors—build your wardrobe and makeup around them!

PRO TIP You don’t have to follow rules perfectly. Your color palette is a guide, not a limit. Mix, match, and most importantly— wear what makes you feel beautiful.
