Cultivating Gratitude ONE BOOK AT A TIME
NOVEMBER IS A GREAT TIME TO REFLECT AND BE THANKFUL. What better time to do this than in the month with a holiday set aside for giving thanks? Cultivating a heart of gratitude takes work, and, as they say, “practice makes perfect.” Choosing to focus on the positive things in our lives that bring us joy,

and putting away the negative, takes conscious effort and determination. As Andrew Carnegie said, “Anything in life worth having is worth working for.” Just 28 days is what it takes to create a habit. Making small efforts, such as writing a quick thank-you note and leaving it on the mirror, will lead you to create new patterns that can make gratitude a natural part of your life. Whatever situation you may find yourself in today, choose to be thankful. It is proven that an attitude of gratitude makes people happier, live longer and have a more positive outlook on life. Here are five books that have helped me in my journey as I work on cultivating a heart of gratitude.
The Treasure Principle, by Randy Alcorn, is the best book I have ever read on giving. “Giving isn’t a luxury of the rich. It’s a privilege of the poor.”

GIVING BACK
WALKING THE WALK
A JOURNEY DOWN THE WINDING LIFE PATH OF UNASSUMING SPIRITUAL LEADER FRANCIS CHAN
IMAGINE YOURSELF AS THE LEADER OF A THRIVING MEGACHURCH IN VENTURA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, WITH MORE THAN 5,000 MEMBERS AND GROWING. You’re a New York Times bestseller making a million dollars in royalties from your first book and people love you—you’re on top of the world. Would you leave that all behind? Better yet, would you trade all of that, giving away 90% of your income to end up living in the poorest region of Hong Kong surrounded by people struggling to make it by on just 50 cents a day? For most, it probably sounds like a tale of riches to rags; an unfortunate and unwanted result of someone falling upon hard times. But for Francis Chan, a church planter and best-selling author who speaks to thousands of people around the world each year, it’s exactly what he did. And exactly what he needed—an opportunity to walk down a winding path that led him toward fulfilling his purpose; toward becoming a

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)
Watch the full interview @ CityLifestyle.com! Francis, born in San Francisco, was raised in a very traditional Chinese home and navigated a challenging upbringing. His mother died while giving birth to him. His father remarried, then his stepmother died in a car accident when he was 8. His father remarried again, then, when Francis was 12, died of cancer. Twenty-six and newly married, Francis and his wife Lisa founded Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley, California in the early 90s, beginning with a membership of 30 people. Within the first two months, the church grew to 100. By 2000, membership grew even more to 1,600. And by 2008, Cornerstone Community Church was one of the largest in Ventura County and Francis’ then-new book “Crazy Love” was a New York Times bestseller. Then, in 2010, Francis decided to leave it behind in pursuit of a more humble and impactful way of life. The $1 million his bestselling book made in the first year, plus the money it continues to make? Francis signed it all over to a charitable gift fund helping the poor and victims of human trafficking. After making the decision to leave Cornerstone and wrestling with what the next step would be, Francis and Lisa ended up selling their Simi Valley house and moving their family of six at the time overseas to India, Thailand and China, where he was able to embrace new interests and activities by doing what the locals do, and where he also saw an inspiring shift in culture and spiritual values. “I wish we could learn and see the sacrifice of others,” he says. “Their mentality really isn’t a consumer mindset of ‘Here’s my needs, here’s what I feel, no one cares about me— me, me, me, me. Overseas they’re just obsessed with each other and thinking about how to get to the poor—the truly poor—like ‘We’re going to starve today,’ or ‘We’re selling off kids today.’ That type of poor. There’s just a lot more urgency.” In the throes of a pandemic, quarrels over U.S. politics, a growing divide among people and beliefs, and the unsurety of life, Francis’ message of focus and fulfillment can be summed up simply: take your eyes off yourself.
“People that I’ve found that have spent their lives truly loving others are the j o y f u l p e o p l e .” 22

For example, in the winter and around the holidays, your charcuterie board could have sprigs of thyme and cranberries scattered about. Around Valentine’s Day, a small bowl of conversation hearts or chocolate covered strawberries does the trick.

The Cade Foundation THE SOUND OF CHILDREN'S LAUGHTER IS LIKE MUSIC TO THEIR EARS. For the parents helped by the Cade Foundation, it is a reminder that it was worth the risk to gain the reward. In 2005, Drs. Camille and Jason Hammond founded the Cade Foundation with a mission to support families with infertility by providing education and grants that assist with the cost of treatment or domestic adoption. The genesis of the foundation is personal for Dr. Hamond. She and her husband struggled for many years with infertility. After five years and six unsuccessful rounds of in vitro fertilization (IVF), Dr. Hammond says, "We were counseled by our doctor to consider a gestational carrier or adoption. We didn't know anyone who had had IVF, let alone someone who had had someone carry a baby for them." Dr. Hammond says that her mom and dad saw a TV segment about a post-menopausal woman who had successfully carried a baby for someone and that her mom wanted to do that. Initially, the response was no. But with Dr. Hammonds' parents' persistence, they moved forward in faith. Her mom, Tinina Q. Cade, got the go-ahead from her doctor, and a year later, she delivered not just one baby, but three beautiful, healthy babies. "We prayed for one and ended up with three perfect babies," Dr. Hammond says. Desiring for others to achieve the goal of welcoming children to their families, and as a way to pay it forward, the Hammonds formed the Cade Foundation, named in honor of her mother, with the initial goal of helping one family. Dr. Hammond explains, "We formed the nonprofit organization to serve the needs of families battling infertility. We support families struggling with infertility through education and outreach and strive to educate outside communities about relevant and related issues. In addition, the Tinina Q. Cade Foundation (TQCF) also provides financial assistance to families pursuing infertility treatment or domestic adoption through the TQCF Family Building Grant." "Most of our grants go to people who are pursuing fertility treatments, others to domestic adoption. We commit to family-building and know that there is not one specific pathway to building a family. We're committed to all pathways because every family is different," adds Dr. Hammond, emphatically. "In its inception, our goal was to raise $10,000 to gift because we knew small grants do not go very far in the fertility or private adoption world," Dr. Hammond says. "That goal, to raise $10,000 to help one family, has grown to help 127 families and award well over a million dollars." In the last few months of social distancing, many philanthropic organizations have had to find creative ways to adapt. Dr. Hammond and the Cade Foundation certainly have not let the pandemic get in the way of bringing hope to struggling families. CONTINUED >

"Infertility didn't go away because of Covid. We are continuing to do all that we can to meet the needs of families who have been touched by infertility, and we are doing that in several creative ways," she says. Virtuality is the key to all the fundraisers, and the committees rose to the occasion with incredible creativity. The annual Cade Foundation Gala is scheduled this year with a twist. Christened, Le Diner Bleu, the gala will be held on Saturday, November 21, as a virtual event. Tickets include dinner, a bottle of wine and a table centerpiece. The meal from the guests' local restaurants will arrive at the same hour. Attendees will be placed in private rooms to dine at virtual tables with friends. After the meal, guests will play virtual games. Following that is a comedy concert and dance party with a live DJ. The annual Corks with Cade Maryland fundraising event in October continued the tradition with an artsy spin--a "Sip and Paint" and game night virtual event. Along with paint packets delivered to their homes, the participants enjoyed a sommelier who spoke about wine tastings. The September Corks with Cade California fundraising event featured a virtual cooking night with a celebrity chef. All the items to make the meal were delivered for guests to cook along with the chef. "We had the virtual 5K that took place in two parts," says Dr. Hammond. "Part one was in June and part two, in October. Participants were from all over the country, each receiving a race shirt to wear as a unifying factor. It was so wonderful to see everyone in their shirts, united in purpose and commitment to overcoming infertility. So, despite the adversity, we continue to do the work we were founded to do." Reaching far beyond the original goal of helping families, The Cade Foundation is doing more than gifting grants. "We have come a long way. We can now provide education for healthcare providers concerning patients with infertility. We partner with Johns Hopkins Health to educate doctors on some of the issues related to infertility so that when patients come into the clinic, they now can refer them appropriately to local resources," Dr. Hammond says. "We are excited to begin a faith-based program in collaboration with the First Baptist Church of Glenarden. We will be partnering with the family ministry that deals with adoption, foster care and infertility. These are just examples of types of programs we are doing in education." To sum it up, Doctor Hammond says, "We educate. We give money for family-building in whatever way the patient decides to build their family. And we advocate on both the state and national levels, providing support for bills presented that are supportive of family-building." For Dr. Hammond, it was always her goal to help as many families as possible. "I'm grateful to do something I love and for which I have a lot of passion and enthusiasm. I feel like I am living the dream!" she says sincerely. Find more information about the gala and other events on the Events tab of CadeFoundation.org. CONTINUED >
