LIFESTYLE LETTER
Settling In
September 2026 PUBLISHER
Scott Barr | scott.barr@citylifestyle.com
I doubt I’m alone when I say that fall is my absolute favorite time of year. I long for the cooler, crisp air, the leaves fading from green into vibrant shades of yellow, red and orange, the opportunity to reach for cashmere sweaters and Chelsea boots, the chance to watch “You’ve Got Mail” on repeat without judgment from my husband. (“Again?” says the man who’s watched “Top Gun” several thousand times.) Fall is also synonymous with the frenetic pace that comes with a seasonal reset. School’s back in session, extracurriculars fill the calendar, professional deadlines loom, and holiday prep begins. For the team behind The Family Practice, a reset arrives by way of a stunning renovation and expansion that allows the practice to provide wellness and aesthetic services in addition to primary care. Our story on the transformation reveals a closer look. Family-owned AMC Painting continues to stay busy as they celebrate 20 years in business—learn about the brothers behind the brand in our feature. Meanwhile, the girls of Gather Mountain Blooms floral farm have a roster of upcoming events that promise autumnal vibes. All the details are in this issue. Kick off the season in style with a shopping spree at the newly opened Gypsy Thrift Collective boutique, a visit to Auric Gallery to browse their September exhibits, or a new perfume from Humble Abode, the locally owned clean fragrance company. Our stories on each of these reveal the rewarding results of creativity and determination. As we settle into September, embrace the chaos that fall might bring, and relax when you can. When I do, I’ll be wrapped up in a blanket on the couch, in the company of Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, potentially eating caviar as a garnish. Fields of Purple Sweet Awakening Farm Develops Lavender Products for Mind, Body and Kitchen In 2017, a car accident nearly claimed Tammy Blackwell’s life while she was attending veterinary school. Walking away from the wreckage sparked a profound internal shift. “Suddenly, the world was brighter, tastes were sweeter, and everything seemed more vivid,” Blackwell recalls. “I couldn’t go back to the life I had before.” Blackwell chose to redirect her caretaking instincts toward nursing. Amid demanding studies, she found solace in nature, planting 300 lavender plants on her Black Forest property. Blackwell laughs as she admits that she chose the resilient perennial for a practical reason: “It thrives on neglect.” Eager to master the crop, she researched, ran backyard trials and joined the Lavender Association of Colorado. Through their classes, Blackwell learned high-altitude cultivation and the delicate art of extraction—how to capture pure botanical essences for skincare, culinary treats, aromatherapy and crafts. When the COVID-19 pandemic forced her to sell her Black Forest home, Blackwell paused school and headed to the mountains to heal and reflect. In Westcliffe, Colorado, she found sanctuary working at a local lavender farm while tending to 75 plants on her own property. This mountain hiatus blossomed into a business, Sweet

Awakening Farm, as Blackwell started selling handcrafted creations like soaps and wreaths at local markets. In 2025, Blackwell felt a strong pull to return to her beloved Black Forest. She sought a small acreage to resume her lavender farming roots on familiar soil, planting 300 new plants to kickstart her next chapter. That summer, Sweet Awakening Farm joined the lineup of vendors at Black Forest’s Backyard Market that runs from May to October. Today, Sweet Awakening Farm includes three distinct product lines: Body & Aromatherapy (nourishing lotions and balms, soaps and shower steamers); The Artisanal Kitchen (inventive culinary treats like lavender sugar, syrups, pancake mix and lavender lemonade); and Handmade Crafts (beautifully woven pine needle baskets, fresh and dried lavender wreaths, sachets and scented eye pillows). Once her fields are established, Blackwell plans to invite guests to harvest their own lavender. Ultimately, she hopes to open an on-site farm shop and collaborate with local businesses. Nearest and dearest to her heart, however, is her vision to provide a peaceful sanctuary where visitors can find healing and discover their own passions within nature. For the Owners of Auric Gallery, Art is Community

Before longtime art gallerists Gundega Stevens and Abigail Kreuser met more than a decade ago, numerous people told them they should work together. When they were introduced, they became instant friends. In 2020 the pair launched Curate Your Space, an art curation service for homes and businesses. Two years ago, they merged their individual galleries into one—Auric Gallery, a downtown Colorado Springs showroom highlighting the work of established and emerging local artists. The moniker blends the names of Stevens’ daughter Aria and Kreuser’s son Caius. “Auric is also from aurum, the Latin term for gold and spirituality,” Stevens adds. “It encompasses who we are.” Here, Stevens and Kreuser share more about their creative pursuits, give a glimpse into the gallery’s September shows and make the case for investing in art. WITHIN THE CITY’S CREATIVE COMMUNITY, HOW DOES AURIC STAND OUT? Kreuser: Something we hear often is that we are a safe place for artists to use their voices. Stevens: Our ethos is two-part. One is to represent artists. Then, the biggest part of our gallery is our community. We provide a fun, interesting place to visit. We want to highlight all the good things about Colorado Springs. WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN THE ARTISTS YOU WORK WITH? Kreuser: It’s all about relationships. We choose artists we can collaborate with well. AT ANY GIVEN TIME, WHAT MEDIUMS ARE ON DISPLAY? Kreuser: It changes from month to month. It’s always so much fun to see how well they flow into each other, whether it be from color palettes or a genre. [In July, we had] a very political show, a beautiful figurative show, a dark, eclectic artist and an installation—four completely different exhibits. That’s what’s exciting, seeing something new every month.

WHO’S IN THE GALLERY THIS MONTH? Stevens: We have Meghan Wilbar, who does these lovely, chunky landscape oil paintings. She also does torn paper drawings, which are spectacular. We have Chris Alvarez, who’s been in the community for a long time. He has a studio in the Depot Arts District where he teaches figurative drawing and landscapes. Lisa Wallace Deen does monoprints and paintings of abstract trees. We have a first-time artist, William Weiss. His paintings make you smile. They’re happy paintings of landscapes and cityscapes, but not traditional. CURATE YOUR SPACE—HOW DOES IT WORK? Stevens: We do it all, from one piece to a whole house. We hang artwork you already have, like large pieces over stairwells. Last week, we did an entire two-story house. The owners had just moved in with a huge, beautiful art collection. We rotate artwork for businesses when they want a different vibe. For people with smaller homes, we’ll go in once a year and re-curate their art. Kreuser: Curate Your Space is not just finding pieces for people. We get to transform spaces. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR OWN STYLES? Kreuser: Let’s describe each other. Gundi’s home is more contemporary. The palette flows cohesively. She has hints of pink and colored pops here and there, but a lot more monotone color. Stevens: Abby has more landscape. She likes yellows, greens and dark, rich colors. She has some sculptural pieces as well. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE BUYING ART FOR THE FIRST TIME? Stevens: Does it move you? Are you thinking about it? Keep it simple and buy what you love. Kreuser: Art should evoke a feeling in you. It’s hard sometimes for people to invest in art, and we don’t want that to be a thing anymore. We want them to realize, if something’s speaking to you, this is a lifelong investment. Whether it be $100 or $1,000 or $5,000, it’s something you’re going to enjoy for the rest of your life. Auric Gallery 125 E. Boulder St. 719.464.5880 auricgallery.com

Intentional
Fragrance Fragrance has the powerful ability to influence mood, create a vibe or transport us to a particular memory from a moment in time. Just a hint of a certain scent can instantly put us in a place we once visited or in a loved one’s warm embrace. Yet traditionally, fragrance formulas have included complicated and potentially harmful ingredients. Julie DeYoung, a University of Colorado Boulder business grad with an inherent entrepreneurial spirit, is breaking that tradition. In 2024, DeYoung launched Humble Adobe, a home and personal fragrance brand
produced in Colorado Springs with a focus on clean ingredients and accessible price points. The name reflects her commitment to creating high-quality products without pretense. Committed to smarter chemistry, Humble Abode uses ethically sourced ingredients entirely free from phthalates, parabens, mutagens, formaldehyde releasers and unnecessary fillers. DeYoung introduced her brand in various community markets with three scents for the home: Garden, Sunroom and Bungalow. As her line gained momentum, DeYoung received repeated requests for wearable versions of her creations. An expansion into personal fragrance with perfume sprays and roller balls became deeply rewarding. “I get such positive reactions from people who had given up on fragrance, people who would feel physically ill from conventional fragrance, and people who just love perfume and are happy to have found a new option,” DeYoung says. “I love that both the scents themselves and their clean ingredients resonate with different groups.” Her formulation process is always evolving. In the beginning, DeYoung created scents based on personal favorites (florals, greens, citrus). Now, she introduces a new scent twice a year to coincide with the transitions between spring and summer, and fall and winter. DeYoung’s inspiration comes from the seasons and from a distinct form of color synesthesia. In her mind, every fragrance has a visual hue: Sunroom is bright yellow, Ember is orange, and her newest scent, Pixie, is an iridescent mix of blue, purple, white and pink. This multi-sensory chemistry fuels her passion for the business, allowing her to maintain a playful spirit while making clean, intentional fragrances that never feel precious or overly exclusive. “I enjoy the creation process—the mixing and the chemistry, packaging, stocking, selling, designing and branding,” DeYoung says. “It exercises my whole body, mind and spirit, and it keeps me busy and stimulated in the best way.” Visit humbleabodeusa.com to browse the latest collections and find local retailers.

“IT’S BEEN AWESOME TO BUILD SOMETHING HERE IN OUR HOME CITY THAT PEOPLE KNOW NOW,” MATT SAYS.
When brothers Matt and Chad Cordova were students at University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, they found themselves looking for a side hustle. It started, as many good ideas do, with a problem to solve. “When we first got started, I researched other painting businesses,” Matt says. “Some people weren’t holding themselves to any type of standard. Paint jobs aren’t cheap, so making people feel comfortable spending that kind of money was a big priority from the start.” The Cordova brothers are currently celebrating 20 years with the company they founded, AMC Painting. In those earlier days, they did everything from sales to estimates to painting. While competitors showed up in paint-splattered whites, the brothers arrived in branded polos. It might seem like a small thing, but that kind of attention to detail and professionalism set them apart. Alongside general contractor Elder Construction, their first commercial job—a dental office in Falcon—was a turning point. “That was when things changed for us,” Matt says. “You don’t learn about getting the bids and doing takeoffs in school. But we gained their trust, and we became their main painter after that.” CONTINUED >

That trust, Matt adds, has always been the whole game. “We’d heard so many horror stories: someone signs a contract, the guy says he’ll be out Monday, and he doesn’t show up until Thursday. You’re paying $6,000 to get your house repainted. You want to trust that people are going to do it the right way.” Now operating with teams in Colorado Springs, Fort Collins and South Denver, that same culture of reliability runs through every level of the company, including how they hire and empower their employees. AMC incentivizes painters who outperform job bids, which Matt says teaches them to think like owners. Work-life balance is also a priority, including flexibility for school pickups and kids’ games. “Our employees perform better when they’re at work if they have that freedom,” Matt says.

The brothers also give back to local youth sports, including swim teams, hockey and baseball—a reflection of their own athletic backgrounds and the competitive mindset that shaped how they built their business. In an industry known for turnover, AMC is known for unusual longevity and loyalty. “It’s been awesome to build something here in our home city that people know now,” Matt says. “They know our name, know our brand, and that’s been fun to do.” AMC Painting 3923 Maizeland Road 719.574.3018 amcpainting.com

AMONG THE WILDFLOWERS Gather Mountain Blooms Nurtures Flowers and Friendships

For Nikki McComsey, growing flowers in a backyard garden began as part of her healing journey following a health scare six years ago. That passion blossomed quickly as her arrangements continually sold out in local pop-ups. McComsey soon realized she needed a much bigger space for her blooms and her growing business. “It all started with planting a lot of different things in my garden,” McComsey says. “Then I found a learning course from Floret, which is out of Washington state, and completely fell in love with the idea of flower farming.” Today, McComsey runs Gather Mountain Blooms flower farm on a parcel of land within the historic Venetucci Farm in southeastern Colorado Springs. Along with her sister, Abby Remacle, McComsey also manages Venetucci and its operations. Gather Mountain Blooms produces zinnias, sweet peas, sunflowers, dahlias, daffodils and dozens of other varieties using sustainable growing methods. Every year from July through October, the farm offers ticketed flower-picking events for the public to stroll the fields and create their own bouquets. “We’re passionate about letting people experience what made the farm important to us from day one,” says McComsey, who also offers educational workshops on how and when to grow certain flowers. This month, Gather Mountain Blooms marks the end of summer with Harvest Hootenanny—an artisan market, live
music, local food trucks and the opportunity to pick your own flowers. Later this fall, the farm hosts its annual Pumpkin Fest made famous by Nick and Bambi Venetucci in the 1950s. Every weekend in October, visitors can collect pumpkins, explore the flower fields, sip fall-inspired cocktails or pumpkin spice lattes, catch a hayride, get lost in a maze and browse the makers market inside the farm’s red barn. Cultivating relationships with the community is hugely important for McComsey. The farm regularly partners with local vendors, including Good Gracious Mobile Coffee and 4th Avenue Crepes. A few months ago, McComsey’s 12-year-old son, Noah, opened CoCo’s Candy and Ice Cream shop in a small historic structure on site, where he serves Josh & John’s locally made ice cream plus a selection of other sweets. A farm store also stocks Colorado-made products like Pikes Peak Lemonade, in addition to candles, artisan gifts, books, seeds and more. “As a small business, we’ve been amazed by how much support there is out there for us,” McComsey says. “It blows us away sometimes how many people come out to support us, love on us and show up when we need them.” Visit the Gather Mountain Blooms online calendar for news and upcoming events. "WE'RE WHOLE PATIENT MINDED," SAYS DR. VOGT. "HEALTHCARE IS BEST PRACTICED AS A TEAM SPORT."
Step through the doors of The Family Practice, a full-spectrum healthcare office, and you’ll discover it’s more than a place for medical appointments and exams. The practice is built on relationships and strives to keep trust at the center of every visit. Recently, the office expanded both in footprint and with its portfolio of services. However, the personalized approach to care remains the same. For Dr. Robert Vogt, founder of The Family Practice, the renovation was about creating a place where patients can receive more of the care they’re looking for under one roof. “We’re whole patient minded,” he says. “Healthcare is best practiced as a team sport.” Primary care remains downstairs, while specialized wellness and aesthetic services are offered upstairs. This second-floor space is a retreat from the busier medical offices below. Created to feel calm, comfortable and welcoming, it gives patients a quieter environment and allows providers to deliver specialized care more efficiently. Newly available services include SculpSure, Lumecca, microneedling, red light therapy, laser treatments and facials—all performed by a highly trained team of doctors and nurse practitioners. Many clients seeking these treatments are already established patients, making it a natural extension of the care they’ve come to trust.
Whether someone comes in for an annual physical, skin treatment or wellness service, Dr. Vogt approaches each visit with his whole-patient philosophy. It starts with a conversation about a patient’s goals, followed by answering their questions and offering honest guidance. Sometimes that means recommending a procedure, and sometimes it means explaining why one isn’t the right fit. Fully understanding patients is paramount for helping them choose what healthcare plan to pursue. Ultimately, Dr. Vogt believes good health starts long before any prescription or procedure. “There’s no pill or surgery to replace healthy habits,” he says. Managing stress, caring for your spiritual well-being, building healthy routines and addressing medical needs must all work together. With the newly renovated space, The Family Practice can better serve patients while continuing to honor its longstanding values— taking time to listen, treating the whole person and building lasting relationships. A b ove At Apex Knife Co., Craftsmanship Still Has an Edge

Starting with the Swiss Army knife his dad gave him as a child, Jorge Almedina has long been fascinated with the craftsmanship of knives. A 2020 visit to a small knife retailer in Monument inspired him to pursue it as a side project while serving in the U.S. Army. Almedina later purchased the shop’s remaining inventory and taught himself marketing, photography and web design. Following an unexpected medical discharge, he opened Apex Knife Co. as a specialty shop in Colorado Springs. Almedina’s passion for metallurgy, blade geometry and the challenge of creating the perfect edge shapes the shopping experience in his store. In contrast to what might happen in big-box retailers, Apex customers are encouraged to compare different steel types, handle knives before purchasing and learn how to care for them. Every knife is hand sharpened to the customer’s preferences, a level of service that simply can’t be replicated by automated sharpening systems. Some of the shop’s most meaningful work isn’t selling new knives—it’s restoring old ones. Forgotten cutlery, like a kitchen knife used to prepare dinners for many generations, is returned to life after careful restoration. Apex not only preserves a knife’s functionality but also its memories. “My favorite knives to work on are those that have a backstory or sentimental value,” Almedina says. “We get so many knives that have not been used in years due to their condition, but customers didn’t want to get rid of them because their grandma or someone else used them for 50 years to make their favorite meals. The smiles we get when a knife goes from a rusty piece of metal to something they can use themselves are always a pleasure. “ Today, Apex attracts professional chefs, home cooks, outdoor enthusiasts, collectors and anyone who appreciates quality tools. The shop has grown to provide sharpening services, engraving and restoration. Soon, Almedina will offer knife skills classes designed to help customers confidently use and maintain their investment. He also plans to collaborate with Golden-based cutlery company Spyderco on future products and to introduce an exclusive line of Colorado-made kitchen knives. FROM "LITTLE GYPSY" TO VINTAGE SHOP OWNER ARTICLE BY ROCHELLE REEDER PHOTOGRAPHY BY HAILEY JANE PHOTO
MONIK A PE TERSEN BRINGS GLOBAL ST YLE TO COLOR ADO SPRINGS Monika Petersen’s journey to opening Gypsy Thrift Collective in Old Colorado City this past summer spans continents, cultures and a lifelong appreciation for craftsmanship. Born in Thailand, she grew up immersed in a vibrant world. Her Taiwanese mother embraced a farm-to-table lifestyle, raising Petersen with a holistic approach to food, health and everyday living. Meanwhile, her German father traveled extensively between Thailand and Europe for business, bringing stories, perspectives and traditions from across the world back home.
ROOTED IN HERITAGE
Petersen’s father descended from a Romani family whose roots trace back to Romania, where his great-grandmother lived before migrating to Germany. When Petersen was a child, he affectionately called her his “little gypsy” and sometimes his “little mouse,” nicknames that became treasured reminders of her history.

Today, Petersen proudly embraces her Romani heritage. She views the term “gypsy” positively, through the lens of her family’s story. It’s a badge of honor tied to resilience, resourcefulness, travel, artistry and an appreciation for beautiful things made well.
A WORLD OF CRAFTSMANSHIP
At 16, Petersen moved to Italy, where she immersed herself in Italian culture and developed an appreciation for exceptional fabrics and tailoring. She sought the same quality materials she grew up valuing, including Thai cotton and Italian linen, and became increasingly drawn to garments made to last. For the past 13 years, Petersen has traveled the globe collecting carefully curated vintage pieces, including furs, leather trench coats, Afghan coats and Mongolian shearling pieces. She selected each item for its craftsmanship, quality and character. “Natural fibers were made to last,” Petersen says. “Vintage clothes have details, are tailored and are cut well. They were built differently.”
CREATING A VINTAGE SANCTUARY
After moving to Colorado, Petersen noticed a growing prevalence of lower-quality fabrics in retail stores. Inspired to offer an alternative, she opened Gypsy Thrift Collective in Old Colorado City. The shop stocks vintage apparel, shoes, home decor, furniture and other artisan wares that reflect Peterson’s personal philosophy and global experiences. It also supports fellow entrepreneurs, including Diane Wallis of Oh La La Footwear (unique shoes sourced from Spain, Turkey and Italy) and Deyun Nguyen’s specialty crystals. Petersen describes her store as “a small sanctuary for people who want to live a simple and holistic life.”
FASHION WITH PURPOSE
More recently, Petersen expanded into fashion design with the launch of her own clothing line, Malatee. Named after her mother, the collection honors her Thai heritage. The lotus flower, a sacred symbol in Thai culture, serves as the brand’s emblem. Malatee is produced in Thailand using local cotton and traditional techniques, with blue garments dyed in indigo and stone washed. The business has become a family effort, with Petersen’s aunt serving as the master seamstress and her mother overseeing quality control. “I love my business so much because I know I’m creating jobs,” Petersen says.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
Petersen is currently building a larger production facility in Thailand to create employment opportunities for additional artisans, seamstresses and villagers. She says workers are paid approximately three times what similar positions often earn locally. She has also expanded locally with a booth at The Collective Boutiques independent shop owner marketplace. Browsing the shelves at Gypsy Thrift Collective, it’s easy to see the evolution of Peterson’s vision. What began as a passion from her youth has become something much larger: a retail destination that preserves craftsmanship and shares the values that have shaped her life. “I essentially created a store for people to experience my childhood.” Gypsy Thrift Collective 2422 W. Style should move you. Good design looks even better in motion. In Colorado, style rarely stands still. It catches the first light beneath Pikes Peak, slips past red rock on the way out of town, and follows the road as the foothills begin to rise. A Porsche looks right at home here, where good design is something you get to experience from behind the wheel. Windows down. A familiar road. Nowhere you particularly need to be. Sometimes the way something makes you feel is the best reason to take it for a drive.
