In a small workshop tucked inside the city, the hum of tools and the sound of sanding wood mark the daily rhythm of Newman Sauna Co., a fast-growing wellness business built almost entirely by accident. Just three years ago, its founder had no background in woodworking. Instead, he held degrees in Chinese language and music, ran a translation company, and played in local bands. But after building a small sauna for himself—and later a cold plunge to help recover from ACL surgery—he snapped a photo, posted it online, and watched his inbox explode. “It did wonders for my knee,” he says. “And suddenly everyone wanted one.”

A WELLNESS MOVEMENT COMES HOME

Saunas have existed for centuries, but mostly in gyms where privacy and cleanliness can be questionable. Cold plunges, meanwhile, are new to American households, even though the science behind both tools is well established.

Sauna sessions can elevate heart rate, increase core temperature, reduce inflammation, flush toxins, and are widely praised for improving sleep. Cold plunges also can reduce inflammation; they also are said to boost dopamine and serotonin, sharpen mental clarity, and ease chronic pain. Together, they form what Bret Newman calls “an ecosystem of healing.” “People want to feel better, and they want tools that help them do that at home,” he says.

BUILT ONE AT A TIME, FOR ONE PERSON AT A TIME

One thing sets Newman’s business apart: everything is custom. There’s no warehouse of inventory and no mass production. Clients send photos of their space, schedule a phone consultation, and Newman designs the plunge or sauna to match their aesthetic. Customization options can scale as far as the customer wants to take them. off-site, installation is quick and mess-free. The client doesn’t have to be living in a construction zone; they just have to provide access for installation. After years of working out of his garage, Newman moved into a dedicated workshop in November 2025 and hired his first employee. Lead times now currently run three to four weeks for cold plunges and five to six weeks for saunas.

BUSINESS, COMMUNITY AND CONNECTION

Despite the growth, Newman insists this all began as personal healing—not business strategy. “You can’t take your phone into a sauna,” he says. “You have to talk; to connect. Or be left alone with your thoughts. You remember you’re human.” That sense of connection—both to others and to oneself—is what drives him. “There’s a common thread with my customers,” he says. “People who want to feel better and live better. After they use their plunge or sauna a few times and tell me their sleep improved or their pain is down—that’s what’s fulfilling.”

For Newman, building cold plunges and saunas is part craft, part wellness, and part gratitude. “I love building things. Popular Parks, Trails, and Other Areas

• North Cheyenne Cañon Park: This beautiful park is home to the Seven Bridges trail, a popular three-mile round-trip hike that crosses Cheyenne Creek. • Tennessee Pass: Offers a variety of trails. Segment pass is a 13-mile trail to Timberline Lake, where you can enjoy mountain streams and green wooded forests. Other trails include Hayden Meadows, Fish Hatchery Nature Loop, and a couple of 14ers for you to tackle! • Old Monarch Pass: Located next to the Monarch ski area. Trail options include Fooses Creek and Old Monarch Pass Loop. If you are looking for longer, challenging trails, there’s the Monarch Crest Trail that runs along the Continental Divide or the Old Monarch Pass/Waterdog Lake Loop. • Mueller State Park: Offers several trails like Lost Pond Loop and more moderate loops. The park is also a great start for beginners. • Pikes Peak: Barr Trail: A long, challenging trail that is popular for snowshoeing and hiking enthusiasts.Crags Trail: Located on the backend of Pikes Peak in Divide and offers a scenic moderate trail suitable for snowshoeing and hikers alike. • Pike National Forest: Offers numerous snowshoeing and hiking options, from moderate to very difficult, including the Mount Sherman Trail and Square Top Mountain. • Horsethief Park: Offers well-known beautiful and unique trails like Pancake Rocks and Crags. • Mt. Princeton: A strenuous, class 2 14er that offers spectacular views! When you’ve conquered the mountain and summited, don’t forget to take a dip in the hot springs! • San Isabel National Forest: Raspberry Gulch, Browns Creek, and Ring the Peak trails are popular in this area. • St. Elmos: Poplar Gulch is perfect for beginner to expert snowshoers and hikers. Before you go… here are some tips for a good tread, trade and time on the trails: • Check conditions: Always check trail conditions, avalanche warnings, and weather forecasts before you go. The National Park Service recommends calling the park or checking webcams for current conditions, especially from December through March. • Start with an easy trail: If you are new to snowshoeing, choose a relatively flat and well-traveled trail to start with. Bring a friend or make it a family day! • Dress in layers: Wear moisture-wicking layers and be prepared for changing temperatures and wind. • Know your gear: Make sure your snowshoes are the right size for you and that you have trekking poles for balance. All direct primary care patients have zero copays or deductibles and can make same-day or next-day appointments as well as virtual visits. Direct primary care also covers urgent care needs under the membership at no additional cost so patients can be treated by their primary care doctor for urgent needs rather than heading to the nearest urgent care clinic. Direct primary care membership offers two tiers of membership. Tier 1 includes unlimited primary care office visits (family medicine, naturopathic medicine, functional medicine, lifestyle medicine, nutritional counseling); discounted labs including one annual in-depth comprehensive lab panel; an annual supplement allowance; as well as a variety of tests and therapies. Tier 2 offers everything in Tier 1 plus a $20 service fee for 18 combined visits for chiropractic care, acupuncture, personal training, gua sha, and therapeutic touch. McCune says, “I hear people quite often say that they want to be disrupters of healthcare, but I think that Strata is truly doing it.” Strata Med has recently opened an additional location to serve patients in north Colorado Springs. Alison Wisniewski is lifelong athlete, personal trainer and nutrition coach hailing from Kaua’i, Hawai’i. She spent years working in juice bars and health cafes across the country, which developed her appreciation for intentional nutrition. “I have seen how transformative the right foods can be for energy and overall wellbeing. In addition, I have always been a creative a cook, a bit of a ‘witch in the kitchen,’ constantly experimenting and turning simple ingredients into something magical. A Different Kind of Doula Choosing Peace Doula Services: Offering Advance-Care Planning and End-of-Life Comfort What if your final months, weeks, days and hours could be… peaceful? What if you had someone to hold your hand, help you and/or your family with preparations, walk you through what to expect and simply be there for whatever you needed?

END-OF-LIFE DOULA

An age-old profession is making a meaningful comeback: the death/end-of life doula. It’s similar to a birth doula, helping shepherd a life from one stage to the next and providing knowledge and compassion along the way. “One of the biggest things we’ve done is just opening doors to talk about it,” says Kater Taylor, an end-of-life doula and life-planning specialist with Choosing Peace Doula Services. Taylor and business partner Liz Gazzola offer advance-care planning, end-of-life doula services, breathwork techniques for grief and more. While hospice typically is responsible for the plan of care and clinical support of a patient, death doulas serve in a non-medical support role. They are not meant to replace hospice, but rather to serve alongside it to fill in gaps in care and support—things like planning, education, emotional support and companionship for clients and/or their families. Both Gazzola and Taylor also volunteer with hospice.

Some people begin work with end-of-life doulas years or even decades in advance; others request services in their (or their loved ones’) final weeks or days. Anytime is the right time.

ADVANCE-CARE + LEGACY PLANNING

For those with time in front of them, advance-care planning is excellent for peace of mind. “Knowledge is power,” Gazzola says. “Having a plan is a great way to decrease anxiety.” Taylor works with clients to plan for current and future care. These plans range from medical directives to financial preparation to funeral planning in order to create a practical, safe and realistic aging plan. Taylor calls advance planning “a gift” to family, who will know exactly what you want, eliminating guesswork and regret. “I create a binder with them,” Taylor says.

That can include basics such as financial information and personal and family history, as well as vigil planning information—does the client want a full church service, a memorial in a favorite park or an informal gathering at their home? Taylor and Gazzola also can help with “legacy planning,” which helps clients do a life review to highlight what matters to them. Perhaps that means writing letters to loved ones, explaining what is in that box of military medals or where that beautiful quilt in the cedar chest came from. “I think sometimes, some of those things get lost,” Taylor says. Importantly, advance planning can also help provide thoughtful guidance on what a client would like his/her later years to look like under different health scenarios. It can even specify how a client envisions his/her final hours—quiet with one or two people; everyone they know in the room, belting out favorite songs. Wishes can change over time and the plan can easily evolve, as desired. While hiring an end-of-life doula is private pay, Gazzola and Taylor stress that they work with families to design a plan that fits their needs and their budget. They are here to help everyone.

BREATHWORK FOR GRIEF

In addition to her role as end-of-life doula, Gazzola also specializes in breathwork for grief. Breathwork is a technique of Conscious Connected Breathing designed to help release trapped emotion and grief. A session involves guided breathing that can tap into the sympathetic nervous system, where grief is held, to foster healing for clients and their families. “It’s pretty powerful stuff,” Gazzola says.

comfort a family requests—and to provide suggestions regarding things they might never have considered. They can gently help introduce the topic of planning and/or final wishes. They can organize visitors or meal trains, if needed. They can suggest ways to make a patient more comfortable— turning their bed toward the sunshine, streaming their favorite songs, snuggling them in their favorite blanket. When Gazzola’s mother passed away years ago, her family was unprepared. Everything felt rushed and chaotic and filled with regret. She decided that things would be different when her father neared the end of his life. She prepared a thoughtful

plan and the experience was wonderfully different for the entire family. “I think the biggest thing we have to offer is education,” Gazzola says, adding that they want to normalize the dying process as a natural part of life and to help eliminate the fear and mystery surrounding it. “It can be beautiful and peaceful and sacred,” Gazzola says. Some businesses start with a plan. Rocky Mountain Beeswax Company started with a legacy. For founder John Haefeli, beekeeping isn’t just a craft— it’s the thread that connects six generations of his family, stretching back to 1903, when his ancestors immigrated

from Switzerland before settling in southern Colorado in 1905. Bees have been part of the Haefeli family story ever since.

A HEART FOR HIVES

John was only 12 when he first suited up to work the hives, discovering a fascination that never faded. He left for college, but beekeeping—and the idea of creating value-added bee products—brought him right back home. By 2017, he had crafted his first bar of soap in a 150-square-foot workshop built by his great-grandfather. For the next six years, that tiny space became the heart of the business, where John formulated every product himself, poured every batch, and learned to maximize every inch of room and every minute of the day. Every product the company makes is formulated by John himself, crafted with a “no fluff, no fillers” mindset. If an ingredient doesn’t serve a purpose for the skin, it stays out. The honey and beeswax come directly from the Haefeli family hives, all minimally processed to preserve their natural benefits. As the product line has expanded, John has partnered with local farmers to add fresh goat’s milk and other local products to his soaps—a reflection of his commitment to his community and to his roots. From melting wax and mixing soaps to hand-wrapping bars and labeling finished products, his attention to detail guides the entire process. Years of careful formulation—and plenty of testing with friends—have shaped products that showcase the very best of the bees and the valley they thrive in. Everything is natural, affordable, and rooted in local ingredients. Today, the business has moved into a larger workshop in Monte Vista, giving John room to grow. He still spends his days moving between tasks—start a soap batch, melt beeswax, pour candles, let everything set, then package and prepare online orders or for the next market. Farmers markets have been part of his life since he was 14, and he still loves meeting

people, answering questions, and building relationships around the products he makes. Looking ahead, John plans to expand into infused honeys—hot honey, vanilla, lavender, and more sourced from local growers—and continue to develop the cosmetic line he introduced last year. Wi-fi, large-screen TVs (go Broncos!), free coffee and importantly, full-time staffing by team members on-site during business hours, provide a well-rounded approach to Colorado Springs’ laundry services. With both safety and aesthetics in mind, each LaundryLounge
