LIFESTYLE LETTER

Local Love

February 2024 PUBLISHER

Scott Barr | scott.barr@citylifestyle.com

It’s easy to love local in the Pikes Peak region. That’s because there is so much local to love! Our vibrant downtown. Old Colorado City. Manitou Springs. The Tri-Lakes area. Other charming small towns and beloved neighborhoods. Colorado Springs is surrounded by stunning natural landscapes and offers numerous outdoor activities year-round due to our relatively mild climate. Let’s not forget cultural attractions like the Fine Arts Center at Colorado College, ENT Center for the Arts at UCCS, the Pikes Peak Center, as well as numerous museums and galleries that highlight local artists. Colorado Springs consistently ranks high in national surveys for its quality of life. Think low crime rates, good schools, and access to healthcare. But also, think about the strong sense of community here. The Pikes Peak region hosts countless local events, festivals, and community initiatives that bring people together. I lived in Colorado Springs decades ago–back when it was just a big small town– and it never left my heart. I returned at least once a year to visit family and friends. Then, 10 years ago, I finally had the opportunity to move back, this time with a family of my own. It’s a different place than it was all of those years ago. But rather than losing its identity, it has nurtured and expanded it. There’s just more local to love now. This issue of Colorado Springs Lifestyle Magazine is dedicated to local love. To showing those businesses and people who help make our city great some appreciation. Read about a catering and events company that has an in-house bakery and floral department to help elevate each of its events, about two top-notch local jewelry businesses with totally different styles. Learn about a quaint boutique that has been lifting women up for 23 years and about a woman making a difference in people’s lives through her all-natural bath and body products. Is food your thing? We have you covered with everything from where to find gourmet caramel products, to a spot for American Gastro-Faire with an Asian flair, to a whiskey house bringing downtown flair to the east side. Finally, read all about the state’s two newest license plates, and how they came to be! Clarifications: In the January issue, Marina Ponomaryova shot our cover photo. Cara Bukacek wrote the article “From Finance to Food” and the Food Network and Boogie on Down Productions LLC supplied photos. THE JEWELER UPSTAIRS: A LEGACY OF LOVE FROM DOWNTOWN’S HIDDEN GEM ARTICLE BY KATHY ROBERTS

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | STYLE + BE AU T Y

How to locate joy: Sometimes it’s hard to find. But in this case, it’s on the second floor of the Sanders Law Firm Building in downtown Colorado Springs at Ted Blum Jewelers (aka The Jeweler Upstairs). Here’s where you’ll find beautifully curated vintage and estate rings, necklaces, bracelets and watches as well as a team of artisans who work non-stop on repairs, custom designs and engravings, insurance appraisals and cleaning.

DELIVERING PERSONAL EXPERIENCES

Nearly everyone here is family or a decadeslong friend. There’s a palpable sense of warmth and camaraderie from this dedicated team who’s devoted to helping customers celebrate the joy of life by delivering personal experiences that will last a lifetime. Now “retired,” although he comes in five days a week, Ted Blum moved to Colorado Springs from Washington, D.C., and founded the shop in 1994 to do repairs and services. He took on partner Barry Belenke in 2014 to create a retail showroom. Belenke was already experienced in the jewelry business, having learned from his father who operated a diamond business in south Florida and then ran the business after his dad retired; and his grandfather, who started their business in New York City. Belenke and his daughter, Madeline, run the vintage side of the shop, buying and selling vintage jewelry and diamonds. Blum’s son, Matt, took over the shop from him a few years ago. Brother Casey and longtime friend Jordan Sabata round out the group as designers and jewelers. “What makes us special is that every one of us is very experienced," Matt says. "It takes decades to learn our craft. We aren’t a startup with novices. Everyone is a specialist at what they do.”

ENTIRELY IN-HOUSE

“Everything is done in-house,” Belenke says, “from sizing to wax modeling, hand engraving and design. We can do complete fabrication, so you can build your ring, charm — anything. We can even engrave diamonds.” Aside from their vintage and custom work, Ted Blum Jewelers can repurpose old jewelry by melting down old pieces you hardly ever wear or aren’t your style to create a custom-designed piece. Whether it’s an old ring, pendant, pair of earrings or even just a piece of gold, they can recast it into something new — like an engagement or a wedding ring. Second-generation jeweler Sabata recently completed a commission for a charm that depicts the Colorado state flag. Composed of hundreds of stones provided by the client, the piece features hand-set diamonds, rubies, sapphires and more. The happy client wears it on a chain around his neck. Matt and his wife, Crystal, Ted and Casey anchor the back of the shop, hunched over their tables with various tools, protective aprons and their ubiquitous microscopes and magnifying lenses. Crystal handles appraisals and is an expert gemologist. Here, they meet the non-stop demand for jewelry and watch repairs, sizing, ring assembly, finishing and refinishing. A portion of their business comes from retail and department stores in the region that don’t employ an on-site jeweler. Some gifts are nice to open in your pajamas. But if you’re considering making a statement of your love to the most important person in your life, it deserves a little fanfare. A gift from the team at Barry Belenke and Ted Blum Jewelers ensures it will be the best decision you’ve ever made. Garden of the Gods Catering and Events: Passionate about Bringing Special Event Visions to Life ARTICLE BY ROCHELLE REEDER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRENNAN MCCARTHY & MELANIE DEXTER PHOTOGRAPHY

When it comes to those special events in life, it all starts with a vision. Generally, that vision encompasses everything from the décor and the food down to the flower centerpieces, and it is all in the spirit of evoking a feeling or an emotion. Whether the event is 10-15 business partners meeting over lunch, or a full-service dinner on-site for 1000 guests, the devil is always in the details.

EVENT PLANNING AS ART

Event planning is all consuming and an art in and of itself. It takes a small army and excellent project management to pull off a good event and even then, there is sometimes a last-minute trip to the store for something like napkins. Imagine having assistance with some of those details. A Michelin Star-trained chef with a full industrial kitchen sporting tried-and-true menus and venue space for business meetings to weddings. There is staff to meet you where you are and serve your guests in the setting of your choice. Garden of the Gods Events and Catering is standing by to help realize your vision.

CONTINUING EXCELLENCE

Mitchell and Windsor Yellen moved to Colorado Springs on a leap of faith and have been integrating themselves into the community ever since. They acquired the community staple and award-winning catering company Garden of the Gods Catering and Events and added it into the Altitude Hospitality Group with the goal of maintaining the award-winning level of excellence this company is known for. Although 2020 was a tough year for the hospitality industry on the whole, this broad-scale small business has leaned in with CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 4 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . tenacity and is standing at the ready to aid in elevating your event. “We are passionate about the creation of our menus and where our food comes from,” Windsor Yellen explains. “We are known for our love of food and our commitment to our clients.” The Yellens have experienced food all around the world and consider themselves foodies and they are committed to continuing the upward trajectory of food offerings in Colorado Springs. The catering company boasts a Michelin Star-trained chef in Chef Devin Spear, menus that can accommodate food allergies and dietary restrictions without compromising taste, an in-house floral division and a bakery that makes all of its own desserts and cakes. “Whatever your vision,” Yellen says, “we can make it a reality.”

visions thus far, one of which was a fully staffed, black-tie wedding located on the remote banks of the Arkansas River at dusk for 300 guests. They brought in a tent, staff, and even built a kitchen in order to make this event happen for the newlyweds. From 10 guests to 1000, Garden of the Gods Catering and Events is here to serve award-winning elevation, sophistication and style. “We have great food, prepared by skilled staff and then served by great people,” Yellen says. Though food is an obvious product of a catering company, Garden of the Gods Catering and Events is equally focused on hospitality. “From the hospitality we show our clients, our vendors and each other,” Yellen stresses they are a people-first company focused on commitment to their clients.

For the L ove of Jewel r y Jewelry Artist and Instructor Lyndsey Rieple: Challenging What Society Deems Valuable

As a jewelry artist, Rieple has a distinct personal style. She combines brass and silver metals with natural elements such as wood, antlers, and stones. Many of her pieces include reclaimed or repurposed items, as well. One of her more popular ring designs offers a “flip stone,” so users can choose one of two different stones to display. “Creating a unique juxtaposition of natural and industrial materials has also been a way for me to challenge what society deems valuable,” she says. “By using materials that are largely repurposed or reclaimed, I can

When Rieple isn’t designing or creating, she is doing what she loves most: teaching. She offers silversmithing classes through Cottonwood Silver & Lapidary inside the Cottonwood Center for the Arts building. There are four core classes: Intro to Silversmithing: Ring; Intro to Silversmithing: Pendant; Intro to Silversmithing: Earrings; Intro to Silversmithing: Bracelet. “These workshops are designed to be taken in any order and offer different and overlapping techniques to learn,” Rieple says. “My goal is to be both a fun workshop that you've been wondering about, while also being sort of a trade school for people who want to continue in this craft professionally or as their main hobby.” Website: https://www.lyndseyrieple.com/ Instagram + Facebook: @lyndseyrieplejewelry

Lyndsey Rieple is an artist in every sense of the word. Her parents, both artists, encouraged her to explore her abilities by providing abundant materials, resources and creative freedom as she was growing up. Her first passion was drawing, then she discovered jewelry making while working in a costume shop. “I was going to be an illustrator, but I suspect after the 10,000th hour of drawing, my brain needed an artform that fed my mechanical inclinations and traveling ways,” Rieple says.

SPOONFUL OF SWEET Located in a whimsical cottage nestled amongst the pines of the Black Forest is perhaps the cutest little sweet shoppe in Colorado. Specializing in a variety of gourmet caramels, sauces, and confections, Cotton Blossom Caramel Boutique is a perfect spot to find a delicious treat.

LESSONS FROM GRANDMA

Owner and confectioner Liz Deen spent summers as a child at the family farm in rural Nebraska. During these summers, Deen soaked up knowledge, skills, and fond memories with her grandma. She didn’t know it then, but those precious lessons would prove invaluable later in life.

Cotton Blossom Caramel: Gourmet Caramels, Sauces and Confections 30

“She taught me how to cook, bake, sew, and most of all… how to do it with love! One of my favorite things we made together was caramel,” Deen says.

COLLABORATION IS KEY

On a trip to The Backyard Market a few years ago, Deen purchased a log of European-style butter from Sawatch Artisan Foods. She was inspired to create gourmet caramel sauce and took some to the owners of Sawatch. They enjoyed it so much, they started sharing it with friends. “I started getting requests for orders,” Deen says. “I spoke to my husband; we agreed that a

little booth at the market would be a wonderful way to spend our weekends.” Cotton Blossom Caramels are still made exclusively with Sawatch Artisan Foods EuropeanStyle Butter.

FAMILY, TALENT, AND LOVE

With the amazing support and handy skills of her family, Deen’s dream soon became a reality. Cotton Blossom Caramel Boutique was a market favorite almost immediately. Along with the high-quality ingredients, innovative confections and delicious sauces, there is another element responsible for Deen’s success: Love. Her grandma taught her well. “I want to provide a sweet and kind experience you'll remember!” she says. “I work hard to make gourmet caramel goodness you'll want to gather your family around to experience. And if in some way, I've gathered friends and family together for

a memorable experience, then I've made your life sweeter, one spoonful at a time.”

CABIN IN THE WOODS

After a few summers at the Backyard Market, Deen had the opportunity to open a storefront in the Black Forest. It provided more space to expand her line of gourmet caramel products, while also providing Deen with an additional creative outlet: decorating. Each holiday, Deen transforms her little cabin into a festive wonderland that creates the perfect backdrop for her seasonal products. In addition to the storefront cabin, you can find Cotton Blossom Caramel at Vintage Market Days and various farmers markets in the summer months. Bohemian Chic + Feminine Eve’s Revolution Provides Shopping Happy Place

ARTICLE BY LINDSAY TALLMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY EVE’S REVOLUTION

FASH ION F OR WA R D | STYLE + BE AU T Y

In September of 2000, Eve Carlson and her husband opened the doors of Eve’s Revolution. What started as a consignment boutique at 1312 Colorado Avenue turned into a full retail, unique women’s apparel boutique that has been a staple of Old Colorado City for 23 years. Eve’s Revolution is a beautiful, magical space in a remodeled historic Victorian home where women feel welcome. Twice a year, they do a consignment pop-up event to bring them back to their consignment roots. Customers say the boutique is their happy place and it’s easy to see why. From the Victorian setting (the residence was built in 1898 and purchased from owners who had lived there for over 30 years) to the inviting displays, the store gives off a cheery, casual vibe. According to Eve, “We’ve been in business so long that we’ve cultivated these beautiful relationships with now generations of shoppers and they have these special memories.” Since Eve is nearing retirement, she recently sold the store to Amie Bennight, the co-owner of Delilah’s next door. However, Eve is continuing to take a very active role as the founder and buyer at the boutique. Eve and Amie share a vision and love for Eve’s Revolution through their years of working together as sister boutiques and neighbors in Old Colorado City. Amie says, “It’s such a special place to be.”

A BOHEMIAN CHIC VIBE

In addition to the delightful experience of shopping in person, the store has a strong online presence and Eve and Amie say they love sending off special packages to women shopping from around the country. The clothing is decidedly feminine, with a bohemian chic vibe. Pieces can easily be dressed up for work or an evening out or worn casually. The inventory moves quickly and the selection is small which adds to the uniqueness of the shopping experience. Many of the staff have been around for a long time, so shoppers are greeted by familiar faces and are offered as much or as little help as they would like in selecting outfits and pieces. They love to be on-trend and carry a selection of core brands.

LIFTING WOMEN UP

Eve’s Revolution is a destination. Both Eve and Amie share a passion for lifting women up and sharing this space with others. Amie wants women to come into the shop and feel good about themselves. She loves the interaction with customers and the supportive community. Eve is committed to the beautiful space that is Eve’s Revolution and supporting the women who shop here as well as the Old Colorado City community. Amie is determined to carry on the legacy of Eve’s Revolution. The transition has been natural for Amie and Eve. “There’s so much joy and excitement!” Amie says. TREAT FOR THE TASTEBUDS ARTICLE BY ROCHELLE REEDER PHOTOGRAPHY BY 503W

503W: Contemporary American Gastro-Faire with an Asian flair

Old Colorado City was annexed by Colorado Springs in 1917, but prior to that, it had a colorful past. The first permanent town in the Pikes Peak Region started out as the small settlement of El Dorado in 1859, but the founders soon changed the name to Colorado City. The Colorado Midland Railroad was established and became one of the city’s largest employers. With Colorado Springs being established in 1871 as a “dry city,” locals had to travel to Colorado City if they wished to partake in a little vice.

FAST FORWARD

These days, Colorado City is known as Old Colorado City and west-siders have re-colored it to generate a unique community with shops, restaurants, art galleries and more. It is a tight knit community which takes pride in its space and offerings. Restaurant 503W (pronounced five-oh-three-west) is one such revival in the neighborhood. For 18 years, The Dutch Mill Tavern stood in that space and was a staple in the community, serving west-siders. Ten years ago, it was transformed by former Dutch Mill owner Mi Lee and new partners Nina Lee and Rollie Ortiz into a new space featuring contemporary American gastro-faire with an Asian flair. Themed happy hours, award-winning brunch, Aperol Spritz on tap, and menu items with a cult following are just a few of the offerings in this local gem. Jenn Miller, general manager for 503W, says that the people serving at the restaurant are really the special ingredient.

“Our owners are the heart of this company.”

“Our owners are the heart of this company,” she says. She goes on to explain that their method of management allows staff the opportunity to be involved in the menu-making process and that lends itself to some really unique offerings in both the kitchen and the bar. Having long-term staff deliver said treats just adds to the Cheerslike atmosphere of this special stop.

ECCENTRIC TASTE EXPERIENCE

As someone who is apt to search for the most unique food offerings, all it takes is a quick glance at the cocktail menu to know that this restaurant does not skimp on flavor and isn’t afraid to do a little research and development to ensure distinctive and eccentric taste experience. Soju and sake, ube, yuzu, lychee, wasabi, hellfire habanero shrub, boba and glitter. Yes, glitter – because, why not? It is no wonder this restaurant found its home in a place known for challenging societal norms and pushing boundaries. It is a treat for the tastebuds and delivered with a smile. PLATES CHOSEN FROM 300 ENTRIES TO CELEBRATE COLORADO’S 150TH ANNIVERSARY

Colorado is turning 150 years old in 2026. To celebrate, the state hosted The Great License Plate Contest, a competition to design commemorative license plates in two divisions: Under 13 and Over 13. The assignment was to showcase Colorado in an interesting and historical way that honors its statehood.

THE INSPIRATION

The competition was inspired by the contest in 2020 to design the Iconic Credential, the state’s driver's license or I.D. card “that’s as beautiful as the Centennial State,” says Chris Hochmuth, administrative resource and inventory manager, Vehicle Services Section at Colorado’s DMV. More than 55,000 Coloradans voted for photographs by Matt Nunez (front side) and Gabriel Dupon (back side) among 400 submissions by almost 120 entrants. “The driver's license contest served as a template for the 150th anniversary commemoration,” Hochmuth says. “We saw it as a great opportunity to get kids under 13 involved, too.”

TOP DESIGNS

The license plate competition was promoted on social media. More than 300 entries from 216 entrants were submitted. Three finalists per division were selected by a committee that included motor vehicle administrators and Gov. Jared Polis; 34,000 Coloradans voted on the top three designs. The two winners were awarded $1,000 grants, commemorative license plates and were recognized at the State Capitol. “The Historic Colorado Contest was a low-cost effort to honor Colorado’s history and celebrate the

150th anniversary with a commemorative license plate,” says Hochmuth. “The enthusiasm was amazing, and participation was far beyond what we expected.” Evan Griesheimer of Denver won the 13+ category, citing the simplicity and colors of the Colorado state flag, the Rocky Mountains and mining as his inspiration. Ten-year-old Calista Blaschke, also of Denver, drew inspiration for her design from Pikes Peak, fortune hunters, the state bird (lark bunting) and the state tree (blue spruce).

UNPRECEDENTED DEMAND

Coloradans have a love affair with license plates, which currently clock in at more than 200 different designs. For reference, tiny Maryland has 989 designs. Hawaii has just 14. But these two Colorado sesquicentennial plates are quite special. As of December, (4-1/2 months after the initial issue), nearly 12,000 plates in the "Under 13" category had been issued — the fastest-selling license plate in Colorado history — while 5,600+ had been issued in the "Over 13" category. The unprecedented demand suggests they could soon become the state’s new favorite choice for celebrating its storied past. “It usually takes four to five years to reach these numbers,” says Hochmuth. “We’re thrilled at the response.” Purchase either license plate online or at a county-operated motor vehicle office for $8.06 per pair, in addition to local fees, through July 2027. NEAT WHISKEY HOUSE: A VAST COLLECTION OF SPIRITS

Travis Field’s first job after high school was in the construction industry. He was an electrician for 10 years before he started FH Beerworks. A self-taught brewer, he opened FH Beerworks in 2014 and moved from downtown to the east side of Colorado Springs in 2018. Over time, he discovered a love for whiskey. In 2021, he added Neat Whiskey House to the FH family. “I’ve learned over the last decade that my real love within this industry is the creativity and innovation that it allows me to express,” Fields says. “I never thought of myself as a creative person until I started coming up with fun new beer ideas as a young brewer. Neat has become another way for me and my team to offer our creativity and ideas to others.”

VAST COLLECTION OF SPIRITS

One thing that makes Neat Whiskey House stand out from other whiskey bars in the area is its vast collection of spirits. While it is a whiskey-forward establishment, Neat’s spirit assortment features over three hundred bottles including tequila and rum. They also specialize in expertly crafted cocktails.

SEAMLESS BUSINESS MODEL

Neat Whiskey House is located across from FH Beerwork’s large outdoor beer garden. Also located on the property is 1231 Craft Kitchen, their on-site food truck. The FH team has created a seamless system that allows you to order food, beer, and cocktails from anywhere on the premises.

HIGH-END EXPERIENCE

When you enter the bar, there are several seating options—soft couches and armchairs, as well as table seating. The long bar faces the extensive bottle collection and is in itself a piece of art. The bartenders are not only highly trained, but also encouraged to be creative. Each bartender has a signature cocktail. “I believe that Neat Whiskey House is one of the best-kept secrets in Colorado Springs,” Fields says. “Our selection of bottles, as well as the quality of our drinks and our staff, rivals any bar downtown. I encourage everyone to make the drive across town to see what we’re doing for themselves.” Website: https://www.neatwhiskeyhouse.com/ Facebook + Instagram: @NeatWhiskeyHouse
